Improving Interruption Recovery in Human-Supervisory Control (HSC)

Interruptions have negative effects on the task performance in modern work environments. These negative effects are not affordable in tasks in which decisions are time-critical and have a life-critical nature. Human-supervisory control (HSC) tasks in time-critical settings such as mission command and control and emergency response are especially vulnerable to the negative effects of interruptions since supervisors in these settings are prone to frequent interruptions which are valuable source of information and hence cannot be ignored and consequences of a wrong decision in these settings is very costly because of their life-critical nature. To address this issue, this thesis investigates an activity-centric design approach that aims to help team supervisors in a complex mission control operation to remain aware of the activities that most likely would affect their decisions, while minimizing disruption. An interruption recovery assistant (IRA) tool was designed to promote activity and situation awareness of a team of UAV operators in a representative task. Initial pilot studies showed a positive trend in effectiveness of the IRA tool on recovery time and decision accuracy. This thesis explores alternative design approaches to validate the effectiveness of an interruption recovery tool that enable mission commanders rapidly and effectively regain the situational awareness after an interruption occurs in the mission environment. This thesis overview these design approaches and present results from a series of formative evaluations of our prototype designs. These evaluations were conducted in an experimental platform designed to emulate futuristic semi-autonomous UAV team mission operations.

Det saknas studier hur handledarna upplever handledning på avancerad nivå inom psykiatrisk omvårdnad. Rollen handledarna har är komplex, de ska både fungera som en mentor och som den som bedömer studenternas prestationer samt ge god vård åt patienten. Syftet med denna studie är att belysa hur handledning upplevs av den handledande sjuksköterskan under Verksamhetsförlagd utbildning (VFU) för specialistsjuksköterskor i psykiatri. Att få kunskapen studien genererar skapar förutsättningar för organisationen och universitetet att anpassa utbildning och återkoppling som gynnar handledarna och studenternas utveckling samt höjer vårdkvaliteten för patienterna. En explorativ kvalitativ ansats enligt fokusgruppsintervjuer har ansetts lämplig för studien då målet är att fånga vidden och komplexiteten i handledning. När deltagarna dras med i diskussionen skapas ett reflekterade klimat som på ett omfattande sätt belyser individens upplevelser, tankar och känslor. Studien kommer att utföras inom psykiatriska kliniken på Länssjukhuset Ryhov efter tillstånd från etisk kommitté.

Procedural justice, distributive justice on supervisory trust and job involvement of the effect - Moderating effects of performance appraisal values

In this study, procedural justice, distributive justice and performance appraisal values to explore and understand the workplace in organizational justice (procedural justice, distributive justice) and the degree of emphasis on the staff performance appraisal values to job involvement and supervisory trust¡¦s influence, in addition, recognized individuals in their work performance evaluation of values, procedural justice, distributive justice, supervisory trust and job involvement are also included in the scope of regulation. The design of this questionnaire is divided into two parts, first part was in charge of the staff performance appraisal to the implementation of the program is consistent with principles of procedural fairness, the respective high and low procedural justice two kinds of situations. The second part of the assessment results for the charge of the staff can feel a fair, competent staff there to the list of recommended salary increases for the results of the judgments of the respective high and low equity allocation of a fair distribution of two kinds of situations. By these two factors, staggered to form four kinds of different situations, but the questionnaire asked the same item. The 242 valid questionnaires were collected, results are as follows: 1. High attention to performance appraisal values of person who cares about the fairness of the process and the fairness of reward distribution, shown more positive behavior and attitude that is a geometric results and paid, so the relative level of pay and the investment will more. 2. Whether it is good for promotion or pay less attention to whether or not the person is on the results than those who do not care if the charge given to the fairness of the competition, will have the role of subordinates have incentives, in turn will increase its performance. 3. Competent to conduct any type of operation regardless of behavior would have on our high importance for the performance assessment process, people will have a better work attitude and output, and will not be competent to act and change the emphasis on performance assessment for high allocation of resources of people, but no obvious effect. 4. In the high attention to procedural justice, distributive justice values in the trust's impact on the charge of little, and in the low distributive justice in the gap produced significant effects.

A Study of Managerial Competencies Training Effectiveness of Supervisory Management.

Since global economy is getting worse for two years, the banking industry is much worse than any other industry especially. Human capital becomes the strength of companies for surviving. In addition, it is a challenge for companies to train and retain the talents depending upon limited resources and fund. However, it is a critical issue to evaluate whether training programs work and raise the organization performance. Therefore, we are going to discuss if the performance of supervisor is improved after the supervisors took the training programs of management competency. This research method is based on questionnaires. According to the result, trainees satisfied with the settlement of courses. Moreover, direct managers are satisfied with the improvement of performance of those supervisors who took the training courses. Within the dimensions, we found that the performance of communication improved the most. Supervisors play an intermediate role to facilitate the performance of corporations. The improvement of communication can help the performance of supervisors. Additionally, the ability of communication is an important trait for supervisors to get promoted. The research result follows the research hypothesis. The results show that the satisfaction of training course settlement has obvious positive influence on effectiveness of management competency. The Gamma is .33(P<.05). The results show that it is effective for companies raise management abilities of employees by spending time and money in training programs.

Do as I say, not as I do? Supervisory behavioral integrity, shared financial interests, and subordinate honesty in budget reporting

Participative budgeting plays an important role for information communication among hierarchies in organizations. In this study, I use a lab experiment to examine three research questions and investigate the role of supervisors in influencing subordinate honesty. First, I predict and find support that supervisory behavioral integrity, i.e. the alignment between a superior’s communication of a value of honesty and the superior’s behavioral honesty, is an effective informal control mechanism to influence employee honesty. However, the effectiveness of supervisory behavioral integrity in influencing employee honesty depends on the presence of shared financial interests between the superior and the subordinates, such that high supervisory behavioral integrity may promote employee honesty only in the presence of shared financial interests. In the absence of shared financial interests, supervisory behavioral integrity is no longer effective in influencing employee honesty. Finally, I investigate whether supervisory behavioral integrity, compared to supervisory behavioral honesty, has incremental effect on subordinate honesty. The results suggest that, compared to supervisory behavioral honesty, supervisory behavioral integrity has a stronger influence on subordinate honesty. Furthermore, high supervisory behavioral honesty is shown to have a demotion effect on subordinate honesty, i.e. subordinate honesty is lower when superior’s honesty is high than when it is low. Supplemental analysis provides potential explanations for the demotion effect. The implications of the findings for management accounting research and practice are discussed.

Supply Chain Operation Modelling and Automation Using Untimed and Timed State Tree Structures

We study the supervisory control of supply chain operation modelled by (timed) State Tree Structures (STS). We model each agent involved in a supply chain using holons. Three operational models, make-to-order, make-to-stock, and assemble-to-order are considered. A strong assumption on the original STS theory is weakened to allow events shared among agents to be located at different levels. A supervisor is synthesized for the example of a mattress supply chain with make-to-stock operation under certain specifications. Moreover, a new version of the Timed STS framework is developed to allow events to have an upper time bound i.e. deadline. With Timed STS framework, more specifications requiring time measurement can be modeled and a supervisory control is synthesized for the timed model of a supply chain. For a nonempty supervisory synthesis result, the maximum time for the inventory periodic review rate, and the minimum cycle time for customer order satisfaction are achieved.

SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND FAILURE DIAGNOSIS OF DISCRETE EVENT SYSTEMS: A TEMPORAL LOGIC APPROACH

Discrete event systems (DESs) are systems which involve quantities that take a discrete set of values, called states, and which evolve according to the occurrence of certain discrete qualitative changes, called events. Examples of DESs include many man-made systems such as computer and communication networks, robotics and manufacturing systems, computer programs, and automated trac systems. Supervisory control and failure diagnosis are two important problems in the study of DESs. This dissertation presents a temporal logic approach to the control and failure diagnosis of DESs. For the control of DESs, full branching time temporal logic-CTL* is used to express control specifications. Control problem of DES in the temporal logic setting is formulated; and the controllability of DES is defined. By encoding the system with a CTL formula, the control problem of CTL* is reduced to the decision problem of CTL*. It is further shown that the control problem of CTL* (resp., CTL{computation tree logic) is complete for deterministic double (resp., single) exponential time. A sound and complete supervisor synthesis algorithm for the control of CTL* is provided. Special cases of the control of computation tree logic (CTL) and linear-time temporal logic (LTL) are also studied; and for which algorithms of better complexity are provided. For the failure diagnosis of DESs, LTL is used to express fault specifications. Failure diagnosis problem of DES in the temporal logic setting is formulated; and the diagnosability of DES is defined. The problem of testing the diagnosability is reduced to that of model checking. An algorithm for the test of diagnosability and the synthesis of a diagnoser is obtained. The algorithm has a polynomial complexity in the number of system states and the number of fault specifications. For the diagnosis of repeated failures in DESs, different notions of repeated failure diagnosability, K-diagnosability, [1,K]-diagnosability, and [1,1]-diagnosability, are introduced. Polynomial algorithms for checking these various notions of repeated failure diagnosability are given, and a procedure of polynomial complexity for the on-line diagnosis of repeated failures is also presented.

The Relationships among the Experiences of Racial Microaggressions in Supervision, Traumatic Experiences, and the Supervisory Working Alliance in Professional Counselors and Counselors-in-Training

Supervision of counseling services is a crucial component to professional counselor development (Bernard & Goodyear, 2009). A common and pervasive threat to cross-cultural interpersonal relationships, such as supervision, is the presence of racial microaggressions (Constantine & Sue, 2007). According to Carter (2007) and Helms, Nicholas, and Green (2012), microaggressions are so damaging, that they may even trigger traumatic responses in recipients. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among racial microaggressions in supervision, the supervisory working alliance, and traumatic symptomatology in supervisees. This study collected survey data from 86 participants who self-identified as racial, ethnic, or cultural minority group members and who were counselors-in-training, professional counselors, or counselor educators. Data collection included responses to demographic questions, the adapted Experiences of Black Supervisors Scale (EBSS adapted; Barnes, 2011), the Trauma Symptom Check-list 40 (TSC-40; Elliot & Briere, 1992), and the Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory – Trainee Version (SWAI-T; Efstation, Patton, & Kardash, 1990). Bivariate correlations revealed significant relationships among all three of the main variables. The SWAI-T full-scale scores had a moderate negative correlation with the EBSS (adapted) full-scale scores (r = -.637, p < .01) and a moderate negative correlation with the TSC-40 full-scale scores (r = -.372, p < .01). The EBSS (adapted) full-scale scores had a moderate positive correlation with the TSC-40 full-scale scores (r = .513, p < .01). Regression analysis yielded a model whereby 40.6% of the variation in the supervisory alliance can be explained by microaggressions in supervision F (1, 48) = 32.752, p < .01. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis determined that the presence of traumatic experiences does not add to the predictive capacity of the model. The results suggest that the presence of racial microaggressions is an important impediment to the supervisory working alliance. Implications, limitations, and future directions were provided.
