Higher Education Support Services and Graduation Rates of Structured Education Program Students

Hepner, Seth 01 January 2017 (has links)
The 1st-year retention rate of the Structured Education Program (SEP) is 90%, yet the 6-year graduation rate of SEP students is 29%. The gap between SEP 1st-year retention and graduation rates is the problem that this study addressed. The low graduation rate of SEP students is an important issue because graduation rates are used to measure the quality of higher education institutions. The purpose of this study was to understand the low graduation rates of SEP students. Tinto's retention theory, which seeks to explain dropouts from higher education institutions, was the main framework of the study. The study's research questions focused on former SEP students' experiences with required and optional support services that were first introduced to students while enrolled in the SEP. This study used a qualitative, intrinsic case study research design. Data were collected through 12 semistructured interviews with participants who met the criteria of former SEP students who have completed the program within the last 5 years. Interviews were transcribed, member checked by interviewees, and then coded to identify 6 themes that focus on participants' commitment to support services. The findings revealed that required exposure to support services in SEP students' 1st year had a meaningful influence on each student's journey toward graduation. An outcome of this study was a policy recommendation paper designed to increase the study site's graduation rates through increased support service requirements for 1st-year students. This study may provide positive local social change through more student commitments to support services and increased retention and graduation rates.

The Use of a Values Affirming Intervention: Does It Impact Math Scores and Semester Grade Point Averages in a Student Support Services Population

DeBruler, Amy L. 01 May 2019 (has links)
College students who are from low income families, have disabilities, or are the first in their family to attend college are more likely to struggle socially and academically in a college setting. Promoting college graduation within these disadvantaged populations is critical for increased life wellness. Previous researchers studied to see if when students wrote about their personal beliefs if it would lead to higher levels of academic confidence and better academic performance (as measured by grades). This study expanded upon those previous studies to look specifically at whether a values-affirming writing intervention provided to at risk students in a federally funded college opportunity program would affect academic confidence, semester math grades, and overall semester academic performance (as measured by GPA). While there was no impact on semester math grades or overall semester academic performance, the values-affirming writing intervention did benefit students’ academic confidence. This study suggests more research on writing about personal beliefs within a federally funded college opportunity program may be beneficial in identifying methods of improving retention rates and college degree attainment for certain populations of at-risk students. A values-affirming intervention for at-risk students may be one protective factor universities can implement to help these students succeed.

Söderberg, Therése January 2009 (has links)

Eriksson, Johanna, Holmgren, Kim January 2008 (has links)
The purpose with this essay is to give examples of how bigger and smaller estate agencies will position themself, at the possible amendment concerning suppport services. This in order to handle the change that an amendment is expected to result in.</p><p>Method: We have applied a qualitative procedure where our empirical materials are based on interviews. The interviewed is five representatives from different estate agencies and since our essay is based on speculative issues we have also interviewed both the sector organisations in order to give our essay an additional spread.</p><p>Result & Conclusions: In our essay we have come to the conclusion that the opinions from the interviewed about how a possible amendment to law would influence the big and the small agencies are very similar. All of our asked estate agencies are for an amendment to law. They also agreed about that it is the big agencies that will be favoured.</p><p>We consider that the big agencies should invest in more personnel in order to provide breadth on the support services that is offered. In this way, we also believe that they can increase the quality on its services and attract more customers. Our survey interprets that the small have bigger possibilities to being personal and local. They should therefore try to find their special niche and in this way receive competitive advantages. We also think that it is important that both the small and the big agencies choose collaborative partners with good rumour that agrees with the estate agencies choices of position.</p><p>Suggestions for future research: Our essay is of one speculative nature then the amendment to law has not been established yet. Therefore, we consider that a follow-up on our issues would be interesting, required that an amendment to law current support services comes to levels. This in order to examine what effects of the amendment to law actual became.</p><p>Contribution of the essay: We believe and hope that our essay can help both big and small estate agencies with their positioning if the estate agent is allowed to charge their clients for the mediating of support services. We also want our essay to be a help for the estate agencies to speculate over what an amendment to law would mean for them so that they can prepare themselves.</p>

The Academic Transitional Experiences of Postgraduate Students in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences at the University of the Western Cape.

Hoffman, Jeffrey Cornè January 2009 (has links)
<p>The aim of the study states what is expected to be achieved by the study overall. According to Brink, Van Der Walt and Van Rensburg (2006), the aim should include the target population, research setting and the research variables. The aim of this study is to investigate the academic transitional challenges (variable) postgraduate students (target population) experience in the Faculty of CHS at UWC (setting) and to determine whether students utilize the available support systems provided. Research objectives Objectives are defined as clear concise declarative statements that are expressed in present tense, which indicate the specific information the study must yield (Burns &amp / Grove, 2003). The objectives of this study are: To determine the academic preparedness of the postgraduate students as evidenced by experience and previous participation in research activities, publications and papers delivered prior to postgraduate enrolment / To determine if postgraduate students make use of the support services offered by UWC to facilitate smooth academic transition / To determine the primary motivations of students enrolling for postgraduate studies in the faculty / To compare the characteristics of postgraduate students with academic preparedness and primary motivations.</p>

The academic transitional experience of postgraduate students in the faculty of community and health sciences at the University of the Western Cape

Jeffrey Corne Hoffman January 2009 (has links)
<p>Transition has been the major focus of educational institutions. The focal argument of the majority of research into student transition deals with the challenges that students faced when they moved from high school to first year at university. Not much focus has been placed on the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies. Postgraduate enrollment rates have steadily grown over the past few years in Higher Education Institution`s (HEI). Support systems have been put in place to assist students. In spite of these available support systems, postgraduate students still find themselves facing challenges when engaging with postgraduate studies. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the academic transitional challenges postgraduate students&rsquo / experience as reflected by the inconsistencies in the enrollment and throughput rates. Secondly, to determine whether students utilised available support systems, e.g. the Academic Writing Centre and the Postgraduate Enrolment and Throughput (PET) programme at the Faculty of Community and Health Science at University of the Western Cape. This was a quantitative study. A cross sectional survey has been conducted by means of a computerised self-administered questionnaire (CSAQ). The study population was postgraduate students in the Faculty of Community and Health Science at masters&rsquo / level. Both course work and research students were included in the study. No sampling method was employed due to the small size of the population. Data was collected to explore the academic preparedness of postgraduate students, and there primary motivations for studying and the utilization of available support services at the University of the Western Cape.</p>
