Análise Multicanal de Ondas de Superfície (MASW): um estudo comparativo com fontes ativas e passivas, ondas Rayleigh e Love e diferentes modos de propagação / Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW): a comparative study with active and passive sources, Rayleigh and Love waves and different modes of propagation

Claus Naves Eikmeier 19 March 2018 (has links)
This work aim to study the MASW (Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves) method by comparing results obtained with different sources (active and passive), Rayleigh and Love waves and different modes of surface waves propagation. Two seismic tests were performed: one with two-dimensional acquisition geometry and 10Hz triaxial geophones, and the other with linear geometry and 4.5 Hz vertical component geophones. Studies were carried out with the following sources: sledgehammer, rammer compactor, ambient noise and vehicular traffic, the last through the Passive Roadside MASW technique. Inversions results with vertical component data (Rayleigh waves) were evaluated through joint inversions with the radial (Rayleigh waves) and transversal (Love waves) components. It were also analyzed the inversions results of the fundamental mode of the dispersion curve with the results of joint inversions with the first higher mode. The studies were carried out in front of the Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciência Atmosféricas (IAG) (Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Science) located inside the university campus Cidade Universitária Armando de Salles Oliveira (CUASO) of Universidade de São Paulo (USP) (University of São Paulo) in the neighborhood of Butantã, São Paulo. The study area has information with a geological material description and SPT (Standard Penetration Test) values that were used to validate the results. The rammer compactor showed to be a better active source in relation to sledgehammer through different aspects: generation of greater energy in vertical and transverse components; better quality of (V,f) spectrum; the data have the advantage that they can be processed using the f-k beamforming technique. The acquisition with ambient noise did not allow the dispersion curves interpretation due to the short acquisition time used. Passive Roadside MASW data contributed to the active data through the lower frequency. Besides that, due to the clear identification of the 1st higher mode in its (V,f) spectrum it was possible to identify the same mode in the (V,f) spectrum of the active data, interpretation that was, until then, doubtful. However, the joint inversion of the Passive Roadside dispersion curves with the active curves did not produce better results compared to the inversion obtained only by the active curves. The joint inversion of dispersion curves from radial (Rayleigh) and transversal (Love waves) components with the curves obtained by the vertical component (Rayleigh waves) also did not bring a better result when compared with the inversion achieved only by the vertical component curves. The use of the first higher mode with the fundamental mode, however, showed significant improvements in the joint inversions results compared to inversions only of the fundamental mode curve. Considering the uncertainties involved, the best results of this work converge with the a priori information of the study area. At the current MASW method stage of development, several steps are quite dependent on the operator. Therefore, the studies carried out in this work contribute to a better understanding of the method in its fundamentals, acquisition parameters and processing.

Bobinski, Tomasz 27 June 2016 (has links)
This thesis presents numerical and experimental results concerning usage of metamaterials for water waves control. Two applications were considered. Firstly, we showed how to focus water waves using analogy to a group of metamaterials called epsilon-near-zero. This allowed to tailor phase pattern at the circular interface between two domains with high contrast in water depth. The analogy resulted in highly nonlinear behaviour of waves, manifested by sub-wavelength cascade of focal spots with respect to the incident wave. The second considered application of metamaterials for water waves was hiding (cloaking) defects in a waveguide from the far-field observer. In the first project, related to cloaking, waveguide with varying cross-sections was analyzed. The efficiency of bathymetry, rendered by conformal mapping, was evaluated in terms of scattering properties. The influence of water waves dispersivity on the cancellation of scattering was also determined. Cloaking properties of the obtained bathymetry were experimentally confirmed using a wave packet characterized by broadband spectrum. In the second project, we showed how to cloak a cylinder that is shifted from the centreline of a waveguide. Smooth cloaking bathymetry surrounding a cylinder was able to significantly reduce the scattering in broad range of frequencies. The experimental counterparts confirmed increase in transmission with respect to a reference case with flat bathymetry. The remainder of the thesis presents novel method for the analysis of fringe profilometry images. Performance of the new method was compared to the Fourier Transform Profilometry. We obtained significant enhancement in spectral capabilities.

Conception de systèmes antennaires omnidirectionnels et directifs favorisant les ondes de surface comme vecteur de propagation dans la bande HF / Antenna design improving the surface waves propagation in the HF band

Bellec, Mathilde 09 October 2015 (has links)
The surface-waves propagate beyond the horizon. This phenomenon is an attractive feature for many applications operating in the HF band both in civil or military field. By example, we can quote the High Frequency Surface Waves Radar (HFSWR), communicating systems, or the study of the currentology. Currently, the antennas used in the field of surface-waves propagation are not fully optimized and radiate also in sky wave. In order to optimize the radiation pattern of the antennas used in these systems, the company TDF, the Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) and the Institute of Electronic and Telecommunications of Rennes (IETR) have proposed this projetct. The main objective of this work is to design electrically small antennas in the vertical plane (< 3 meters) in the HF band while reducing the radiation toward the sky. The first concept is based on vertically polarized antennas electrically small in the vertical plane coupled to horizontally radiators placed above the antenna. As a result, the radiation pattern in the horizontal plane is omnidirectional or directive with a radiation toward the sky reduced for the elevations range from -45° to +45°. Prototypes have been realized and validated by measurements. Then, in the second study we have developed antennas array in order to reduce the radiation toward the sky with another way that the horizontal radiators. This method allows reducing significantly the radiation toward the sky according to the number of elements in the array. Finally, in the third study we have studied electronically scanning antennas while maintaining the reduction of the radiation toward the sky. The first system is based on an array of radiator loaded by reactance, and the second is based on a planar array with an appropriate feeding.

Contributions expérimentales sur la dynamique instationnaire de bulles de Taylor / Experimental contributions on the unsteady dynamics of Taylor bubbles

Madani, Seyedeh Sara 26 March 2010 (has links)
The present work deals with the motion of a Taylor bubble rising through vertical oscillating pipes. The aim is to perform a more detailed and experimental quantitative study of this unsteady flow, still seldom addressed in the literature. The investigation is restricted to high Reynolds numbers to understand inertia effects. Experimental results are provided for two different configurations : 1) pipes with two different inner diameters (9.8 mm and 20 mm) filled with water, 2) the thinner pipe (D=9.8 mm) filled with four low viscous fluids. So the Bond number Bo, based on the steady rise velocity varies from 13 to 57, where the effects of surface tension can be considered. The bubble trajectory is tracked by using a high-speed video camera. The average terminal and fluctuating velocity, as well as the phase shift with the oscillating plate are obtained by using image processing. The main results show that for weak acceleration, the mean velocity decreases with the relative acceleration as the fluctuating velocity increases in proportion to this acceleration. Beyond a critical relative acceleration, the average velocity increases and the fluctuating velocity increase seems to slow down. This behavior change seems to be related to the interface deformation (modified curvature, surface waves) which becomes significant in high accelerations. Additionally, comparisons are made with the numerical results obtained by neglecting the capillary effects. Correlations allowing the prediction of mean and fluctuating velocities depending on the Bond number and relative acceleration are proposed and compared with our experimental results. The time evolution of the radii of curvature in the vicinity of the bubble nose is also studied for different relative accelerations and the results are compared with the stagnant case. In high accelerations, the formation and propagation of surface waves which may influence the bubble dynamics are quantified

In this work, we implement finite element method calculations to study the mechanical and optical properties of planar optical microcavities (POMCs) under the strain modulation induced by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). We start by solving separately the problems of mechanical modulation and optical mode characterization. Afterwards, we merge the two models in a single one which enables the characterization of the acousto-optic modulation in the system and allows us to calculate the SAW induced modification in the optical properties of POMCs. We concentrate our attention in POMCs which have distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) composed of layers of highly piezoelectric materials like ZnO and LiNbO3. We show that, using around 10 DBRs on top and below the optical cavity layer, POMCs based on ZnO/SiO2 and LiNbO3/SiO2 could, in principle, have Q-factors exceeding 104. The strong light confinement in the cavity allows us to the observe effects related to the strong photon-phonon coupling induced by the SAW. In particular, we show how the presence of SAWs leads to the formation of acoustically induced dynamic optical superlattices, which are characterized by the folding of photon dispersion in the cavity and the appearance of "mini" Brillouin zones. Our results are in very good agreement with experimental results reported in literature. They open the possibility of characterization of acoustically induced modulation in arbitrary layered systems and create a very good platform for interpretation of experimental results / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física / 2013/118635-2 / 2012/11382-9 / CAPES / FAPESP

Studium horninových struktur v Českém ráji pomocí seismického šumu / Ambient noise investigation of rock structures in Bohemian Paradise

Müller, Jozef January 2021 (has links)
We carry out non-invasive ambient noise investigation of rock structures in Bohemian Paradise (Bohemian Cretaceous Basin, Czech Republic). The study is focused on two key topics: 1) An in-situ elastic moduli estimate of competent, horizontally deposited sandstone layers. This is done by performing an ambient noise array measurement. The recording is processed with f-k array analysis, from which frequency-dependent Love and Rayleigh wave dispersion curves as well as the Rayleigh wave ellipticity are retrieved. The data are inverted for P- and S-wave velocity profiles, from which the Young's and shear modulus are successfully estimated. 2) Study of local response of Kapelník rock tower. We analyse a dataset of ambient noise recordings from the top of the tower and from its foot. Information about tower oscillation frequencies and directions, together with amplification ratios, are retrieved from particle motion polarisation analysis and from site-to-reference spectral ratios. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is finally used to interpret the measured data using the elastic moduli estimated from the noise array measurement. Modification of a vortex-panel method to include surface effects and allow finite-element interface

Simmons, Scott R. 02 May 2009 (has links)
A vortex-panel method for potential flow is used as a basis for modeling surface effects and creating a finite-element interface so that an arbitrary body can be analyzed. The basic model consists of triangular panels of linearly varying vorticity which represent the body, vortex cores on the lifting edges of the body, and vortex filaments representing the wake. The interface modification is made by using a finite-element application's output as the basis for an input file for the model, executing the main program, and writing body and wake output readable by the finite-element application. The surface-effect modification is made by including an image of the body below the real body to create a surface boundary condition through symmetry. / Master of Science

Testing of Ground Subsurface using Spectral and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves

Naskar, Tarun January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Two surface wave testing methods, namely, (i) the spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW), and (ii) the multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW), form non-destructive and non-intrusive techniques for predicting the shear wave velocity profile of different layers of ground and pavement. These field testing tools are based on the dispersive characteristics of Rayleigh waves, that is, different frequency components of the surface wave travel at different velocities in layered media. The SASW and MASW testing procedure basically comprises of three different components: (i) field measurements by employing geophones/accelerometers, (ii) generating dispersion plots, and (iii) predicting the shear wave velocity profile based on an inversion analysis. For generating the field dispersion plot, the complexities involved while doing the phase unwrapping calculations for the SASW technique, while performing the spectral calculations on the basis of two receivers’ data, makes it difficult to automate since it requires frequent manual judgment. In the present thesis, a new method, based on the sliding Fourier transform, has been introduced. The proposed method has been noted to be quite accurate, computationally economical and it generally overcomes the difficulties associated with the unwrapping of the phase difference between the two sensors’ data. In this approach, the unwrapping of the phase can be carried out without any manual intervention. As a result, an automation of the entire computational process to generate the dispersion plot becomes feasible. The method has been thoroughly validated by including a number of examples on the basis of surface wave field tests as well as synthetic test data. While obtaining the dispersion image by using the MASW method, three different transformation techniques, namely, (i) the Park’s wavefield transform, (ii) the frequency (f) -wavenumber ( ) transform and (iii) the time intercept ( -phase slowness (p) transform have been utilized for generating the multimodal dispersion plots. The performance of these three different methods has been assessed by using synthetic as well as field data records obtained from a ground site by means of 48 geophones. Two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional dispersion plots were generated. The Park’s wavefield transformation method has been found to be especially advantageous since it neither requires a very high sampling rate nor an inclusion of the zero padding of the data in a wavenumber (distance) domain. In the case of an irregular dispersive media, a proper analysis of the higher modes existing in the dispersion plots becomes essential for predicting the shear wave velocity profile of ground on the basis of surface wave tests. In such cases, the establishment of the predominant mode becomes quite significant. In the current investigation for Rayleigh wave propagation, the predominant mode has been computed by maximizing the normalized vertical displacements along the free surface. Eigenvectors computed from the thin layer approach (TLM) approach are analyzed to predict the corresponding predominant mode. It is noted that the establishment of the predominant mode becomes quite important where only two to six sensors are employed and the governing (predominant) modal dispersion curve is usually observed rather than several multiple modes which can otherwise be identified by using around 24 to 48 multiple sensors. By using the TLM, it is, however, not possible to account for the exact contribution of the elastic half space in the dynamic stiffness matrix (DSM) approach. A method is suggested to incorporate the exact contribution of the elastic half space in the TLM. The numerical formulation is finally framed as a quadratic eigenvalue problem which can be easily solved by using the subroutine polyeig in MATLAB. The dispersion plots were generated for several chosen different ground profiles. The numerical results were found to match quite well with the data available from literature. In order to address all the three different aspects of SASW and MASW techniques, a series of field tests were performed on five different ground sites. The ground vibrations were induced by means of (i) a 65 kg mass dropped freely from a height of 5 m, and (ii) by using a 20 pound sledge hammer. It was found that by using a 65 kg mass dropped from a height of 5 m, for stiffer sites, ground exploration becomes feasible even up to a depth of 50-80 m whereas for the softer sites the exploration depth is reduced to about 30 m. By using a 20 lb sledge hammer, the exploration depth is restricted to only 8-10 m due to its low impact energy. Overall, it is expected that the work reported in the thesis will furnish useful guidelines for (i) performing the SASW and MASW field tests, (ii) generating dispersion plots/images, and (iii) predicting the shear wave velocity profile of the site based on an inversion analysis.

It is possible to determine the average crustal composition and the main contacts obtained by strong impedance contrasts as upper and lower crust boundary, as well as, lower crust limit and upper mantle (Moho discontinuity). The knowledge of the speed of travel of the waves of an earthquake recorded through a seismographic station provides information, such as: the travel time, Vp / Vs ratio and others. The region of Pontes e Lacerda / MT is located in the Southwest of the Amazonian craton and the data were taken in different phases with the implantation of seismometers aligned in a perpendicular direction (NE-SW direction) to the main structures of the Faixa Móvel Aguapeí (direction NNW- SSE). In addition to collecting data from these temporary stations, earthquake data were collected for the PTLB fixed station. The average thickness found in the crust for the region did not vary much for the different techniques, and for the Receiver Function (PTLB fixed station), a value of approximately 44 Km of thickness was obtained and for the temporary stations (S01 to S10) average value of 42 km. The seismic section generated by the correlation of the signals for all short-time temporary stations brought the signals coherence in 4s, 5s and later coherence ranging from 9.5 to 11 seconds.
