INTRODUCTION: Academic faculty in public health have diverse career interests and occupy positions of considerable influence. They play an important role in setting curriculum and training the future public health workforce. However, there is little published scholarly information regarding which public health diseases, disorders, and disabilities are most important to them. Skin cancer is a major public health problem that has been declared an epidemic.
AIM: The Aim of this study is to discover which public health disorders are of highest concern and to determine the relative priority of skin cancer to public health faculty.
METHODS: The primary design of the study was that of a non-experimental opinion based survey. Subjects were faculty members of national academic, public health programs. To obtain the broadest distribution, primary and secondary faculty as defined by the ASPPH were included. A 19 question survey document was administered electronically through Qualtrics. There were 15 questions on the importance of specific disorders and five questions on skin cancer. Responses were categorized ranked and compared.
RESULTS: Obesity ranked the highest among all concerns with cardiovascular disease and cancer also receiving high priority. Cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease led in secondary outcomes. Tertiary outcomes were nearly evenly split between cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health. Priorities varied by regions, age, gender and race. The majority placed skin cancer in the second quartile of importance and believed it to be appropriately ranked.
CONCLUSION: Public health faculty prioritize disorders similarly in spite of diverse interests with minor differences across regions and demographics. National Funding as a proxy for importance does not cleanly align with faculty priorities. Public health faculty express familiarity with skin cancer, however, do not generally considered it of highest priority compared to other disorders. Increased faculty emphasis on interventions that prevent skin cancer may improve awareness and reduce negative sequela.

Imperial control in Roman and Byzantine Arabia : a landscape interpretation of archaeological evidence in Southern JordanFindlater, George MacRae January 2004 (has links)
The dominant interpretation of Roman imperialism in the provinces of Arabia and then Palaestina Tertia holds that the Empire was seeking to combat external military threats from nomads. This interpretation is based on archaeological evidence of Roman military sites forming a static defensive system linked by a road network. Recent scholarship in Jordan has questioned this interpretation. Alternative hypotheses have been advanced proposing that these sites acted as points of provincial control or were situated to maintain routes for long distance trade. It is proposed here that these interpretations of imperial control are flawed, either because of poorly realised explanatory models or improperly sampled datasets. In contrast, this study achieves an integration of textual and archaeological data through the conceptual framework of landscape. This approach stresses the spatial correlates of human behaviour and allows an alternative interpretation of imperial control to be validated. This study proposes the hypothesis that the aim of Roman imperialism in this area was to control directly imperial material resources. It does not present a historical reconstruction but demonstrates the power of a landscape approach over other models in the interpretation of Roman imperial control in southern Jordan. A rigorous review of existing textual and archaeological evidence from southern Jordan to establish military spatial and temporal development concludes that the scale of military fluctuations to support the hypothesis of a desert frontier sy~tem has been exaggerated. To test this conclusion primary data from the Dana Archaeological Survey (DAS), a three-year survey project directed by the author, was rigorously correlated with existing datasets. By strictly defining military sites and emphasising these monuments as part of wider settlement pattern, the survey demonstrated that military variability was in fact highly conservative and cannot support the hypothesis of frontier defence or provincial control. The DAS data was then used to test an alternative hypothesis that military variation is linked to the control of trade and wider socio-economic integration. This was achieved by correlating military sites with the wider settlement hierarchy through patterns of ceramic continuity. However, contrary to previous interpretations showing highly variable settlement change, the results proved that the correlation with military sites is not exact. These results were then compared with critically evaluated data from four other surveys (Wadi Hasa Survey, Southern Ghors and North Arabah Survey, Limes Arabicus survey and the Kerak Plateau Survey), which broadly supported the DAS results. This study makes clear that there is a spatial correlation between the existence of imperial estates, industrial centres and military sites. Archaeological evidence of an imperial estate in the DAS project area is presented and is contrasted with the different spatial and temporal features of a civilian estate. This imperial estate can be spatially correlated with several military sites. A review of the historical and textual evidence for imperial estates in Arabia suggests a provincial-wide pattern. This re-interpretation of the imperial landscape in southern Jordan views the location of military sites and the road network as a part of a vast integrated resourcing system of the Eastern Empire.

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences and similarities regarding verbal politeness in greetings and requests in Swedish and the Chilean variety of Spanish. A survey with 12 questions, both open-ended and closed-ended, has been distributed to 20 native speakers of the two languages. Thus, the questions have been analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that the perception that the Swedes and the Chileans have about verbal politeness is similar, since the speakers of both languages see it as a way to show respect towards others. The study also shows that Swedes and Chileans share a similar view upon politeness, i.e. as a social norm that facilitates social interaction between people.

Technological innovation in mobile devices has upgraded the potential uses of the devices for living and learning. Mobile learning provides opportunities for mobile users to learn at any time in any location. A certification that confirms computing and Internet technology skills and knowledge provides more opportunities to students in higher education for their future careers. Students can attend a training course to better prepare for a certification exam. However, most students spend their time preparing for and reviewing their regular courses and have less time for the training course. The problems of time limitation and space restriction cause students' insufficient learning toward the preparation for the certification exams. Mobile learning may augment the face-to-face training course to solve these problems.
The purpose of this study was to investigate undergraduate students' perceptions and the effectiveness of instruction using mobile devices to prepare for a standard certification exam in a blended certification-training course. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group received the treatment and the control group was treated as usual in a face-to-face class. Using a mixed-method research design, a pretest and a posttest collected data from all the participants and a survey and interviews gathered information from the students of the experimental group. The results showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the posttest scores. In the pretest, the experimental and control groups did not differ significantly, which means that they were at the same level before the intervention. Then in the posttest, the experimental and control groups were significantly different, meaning that the treatment was instrumental in the difference. Further, the results revealed that learning via mobile devices provided the students more learning opportunities and improved interaction with other students; though using short message service for learning had positive effectiveness, multimedia messaging service may supplement it to demonstrate manipulation. Suggestions of experts familiar with the field and review of literature can assist development of using short message service messages for preparation of various certification examinations. Using mobile learning in an institute with integrated planning may decrease cost by sharing of resources.

The Costs and Benefits of Longitudinal Data: Three Applications from the Mexican Family Life SurveyVelasquez, Andrea P. January 2014 (has links)
<p>Longitudinal surveys have revolutionized empirical research and our understanding of the dynamic processes that affect the economic prosperity, health and well-being of the population. This dissertation explores and provides evidence, through three empirical applications, on the costs and benefits of designing, implementing and using data from a new, innovative longitudinal survey, the Mexican Family Life Survey (MxFLS). The survey, which is representative of the Mexican population living in Mexico in 2002, is designed to follow movers within Mexico and also those who move to the United States. This design lies at the center of the contributions of my research to the scientific literature.</p><p>Attrition is the Achilles heel of longitudinal surveys. The first essay of the dissertation focuses on the cost of attrition for scientific knowledge. Following the same individual through time allows a researcher to trace the evolution of a respondent's behaviors and outcomes in a dynamic framework; however, if attrition is selected on unobserved characteristics, the advantage of using panel data could be severely hindered. Exploring different methods to adjust for attrition, this essay provides evidence of limitations of standard post-survey adjustments strategies that are the standard in the literature. These approaches, exploit only baseline characteristics of the respondents and, conditional on those characteristics, treat attriters as missing at random. I provide evidence that this assumption is substantively important and rejected in the MxFLS in spite of the fact that attrition in that survey is low relative to other nationally-representative surveys conducted in the United States and abroad. </p><p>The second essay in this dissertation exploits the fact that MxFLS follows movers within Mexico and those who move across the Mexico-US border to provide new insights into the mechanisms that underlie the selectivity of migrants within Mexico, how they differ from migrants who move from Mexico to the U.S. and how those who return contrast with the migrants who remain in the U.S. more permanently. The results provide evidence that human capital is predictive of migration within Mexico and to the United States, but that there is little indication that the decision to stay in the United States is highly correlated with education. In contrast, having relatives in the United States is not only a powerful predictor of migration to the United States, but it is also predictive of successful economic assimilation. </p><p>The third essay exploits a different dimension of the longitudinal survey in order to address an important question regarding the impact of unanticipated crime and violence on population well-being. To wit, the essay rigorously examines the impact of the recent surge in violent crime in Mexico on the labor market outcomes, migration, and wealth of the Mexican population. The timing of the last two waves of the MxFLS paired with the panel nature of the survey, allows the comparison of outcomes of the same individual in periods of low and high violence, which removes the potentially endogenous time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity between respondents. Moreover, due to the fact that the MxFLS was designed to follow migrant respondents, this study is able to directly test whether there is a systematic migratory response to crime. The results from this analysis find that crime predicts migration and it negatively affects the labor outcomes of self-employed individuals. In addition, the negative effects on the labor outcomes have translated into reductions in per capita expenditure at the household level, which suggests that the recent wave of violence in Mexico may have long-term consequences on the wealth and well-being of Mexican households.</p> / Dissertation

The survey as a public input tool in city parks and recreation departments : do representative surveys matter in decision making?Mora, Sabina 17 November 2010 (has links)
Although most city departments use citizen surveys to gather information from the public, very few use probability sampling to ensure a representative sample of the population. This report takes a first look at how park and recreation departments use citizen surveys to gather input from the public. The purpose of this report is to explore the extent to which adequate representation of communities is considered in citizen surveys.
This report uses two approaches. First, interviews with parks and recreation administrators in 13 U.S. cities are analyzed to compare the use of surveys across departments. Second, responses from two samples of visitors to Barton Springs (a representative stratified sample and a non representative online sample) are analyzed to find differences in responses between the two samples.
Qualitative analysis of the interviews found that although citizen surveys are common, few managers conduct citizen surveys using probability samples. In addition, adequate representation of the population is not generally recognized as one of the principal benefits of citizen surveys. Responses to the Barton Springs survey suggest that there are important differences between probability samples and non probability samples. This report supports that sampling techniques and survey methodology have a significant impact the results of citizen surveys. / text

<p>The purpose of this study was to identify the positive and negative aspects of the work and dynamics of a management team and from that recommend how the team can improve. The aim was also to investigate whether there was a gap between how the members of the management team comprehend themselves and how the project, section and team managers comprehend the management team. The management team contains of seven core team members and is the head function of a research and development site in central Sweden. The results are based on interviews with the present members of the management team and three former members, a survey among the project, section and team managers and by participating observation on meetings with the team. The results show that the management team is an overall well-functioning team that with some changes and improvements, especially concerning communication and information, can reach even further. In addition the results show that there was no considerable gap between how the management team comprehends them and how the project, section and team managers comprehend the management team.</p>

A comparative study of optimal stratification in business and agricultural surveysHayward, Michael Clifford January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is a comparative study of optimal design-based univariate stratification as applied to highly skewed populations such as those observed in business and agricultural surveys. Optimal stratification is a widely used method for reducing the variance or cost of estimates, and this work considers various optimal stratification algorithms, and in particular optimal boundary algorithms, to support this objective.
We first provide a background to the theory of stratification and stratified random sampling, and extend this through the derivation of optimal allocation strategies. We then examine the effect of allocation strategies on the variance and design effect of estimators, and in particular find several issues in applying optimal or Neyman allocation when there is little correlation between the survey population and auxiliary information.
We present a derivation of the intractable equations for the construction of optimal stratum boundaries, based on the work of Dalenius (1950), and derive the cumulative square root of frequency approximation of Dalenius & Hodges (1957). We then note a number of issues within the implementation of the cumulative square root of frequency rule surrounding the construction of initial intervals, and find that the placement of boundaries and the variance of estimates can be affected by the number of initial intervals. This then leads us to propose two new extensions to the cumulative square root of frequency algorithm, using linear and spline interpolation, and we find that these result in some improvements in the results for this algorithm.
We also present a complete derivation of the Ekman algorithm, and consider the extended approach of Hedlin (2000). We derive several new results relating to the Ekman algorithm, and propose a new kernel density based algorithm. We find all three Ekman based algorithms produce similar results for larger populations, and provide some recommendations on the use of these algorithms depending on the size of the population.
We look at the derivation and implementation of the Lavallee-Hidiroglou algorithm, and find that it is often slow to converge or does not converge for Neyman allocation. We therefore adopt a random search model of Kozak (2004), and note that the Lavallee-Hidiroglou algorithm generally produces superior results across all populations used in this thesis.
We briefly investigate the optimal number of strata by examining the work of Cochran (1977) and Kozak (2006), and find that there is a diminishing marginal effect from increasing the number of strata and possibly some benefit from constructing more than six strata. However we also acknowledge that the cost of constructing such strata may offset any potential gain in precision from constructing more than five or six strata.
Finally we consider the how many of these problems can be developed further, and ultimately find that such problems for deciding the number of strata, construction of stratum boundaries, and the allocation of sample units among the strata may require an approach that takes account of the relationship between the auxiliary variable and the survey information. We therefore suggest investigating these algorithms further within the context of a model-assisted environment in order to help account for the relationship between the auxiliary information and survey population.

The fossil record of star formation from galaxy spectraPanter, Ben January 2005 (has links)
In this thesis I present work using the MOPED algorithm to extract in a non-parametric fashion star formation histories and galaxy masses from the spectra of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The recovered parameters for all galaxies are combined to give insight into the processes of star and galaxy formation on both individual galaxy and cosmic scales. The MOPED algorithm allows use of the entire spectral range, rather than concentrating on specific features, and can be used to estimate the complete star formation history without prior assumptions about its form. By combining the star formation histories of 96,545 galaxies in the redshift range 0 < z < 0:34 the cosmic star formation rate is determined from the present day to z ~ 6. The results show that the peak of star formation occurred at z ~ 0:6, and that 26% of the mass of stars in the present-day Universe was formed at z ~ 2. The average metallicity rises from Z/Z= 0:44 at high redshift to a peak of 0:8 at z ~ 1 before declining to a level around 0.25 atthe present day. Although the peak in star formation is more recent than previously thought, the sample used includes galaxies with a range of masses not accessible to traditional studies, down to a limit of L ~ 2 x 10-3L*. By cutting the sample into ranges of mass it can be seen that the redshift at which starformation activity peaks is an essentially monotonically increasing function of final stellar mass. The time of the peak in star formation ranges from z > 2 for the highest mass galaxies (MS < 1012M) to z ~ 0:2 for the lowest (MS < 1010M). A typical L* galaxy appears to have its peak at around z » 0:8. These differences in star formation with mass reconcile the redshift of the peak found in this work with the previous estimates, generally deep surveys only probe the SFR of galaxies with MS < ML*. The stellar mass calculated using the reconstructed spectra eliminates contamination from either emission lines or AGN components. Using these masses it is possible to construct the mass function for the stellar mass component of galaxies which give excellent agreement with previous works, but extend their range by more than two decades in mass to 10 7.5 < Ms/h-2M < 1012. I present both a standard Schechter fit and a fit modified to include an extra, high-mass contribution, possibly from cluster cD galaxies. The Schechter fit parameters are phi* = (7:8 +/- 0:1) £ 10-3h3Mpc-3, M* = (7.64 +/- 0.09) x 10*10h-2M and alpha = -1.159 +/- 0.008. The sample also yields an estimate for the contribution from baryons in stars to the critical density of omega b*h = (2.39+/-0.08)x10-3, in good agreement with other indicators. No evolution of the mass function in the redshift range 0:05 < z < 0:34 is apparent, indicating that almost all stars were already formed at z » 0:34 with little or no star formation activity since then and that the evolution seen in the luminosity function must be largely due to stellar fading. The star formation history can be interpreted as a measure of how gas was transformed into stars as a function of time and stellar mass: the Baryonic Conversion Tree (BCT). There is a clear correlation between early star formation activity and present-day stellar mass: the more massive galaxies have formed about 80% of their stars at z > 1, while for the less massive ones the value is only about 20%. Comparing the BCT to the dark matter merger tree indicates that star formation efficiency at z > 1 had to be high (as much as 10%) in galaxies with present-day stellar mass larger than 2 x 10*11M, if this early star formation occurred in the main progenitor. The LCDM paradigm can accommodate a large number of red objects; it is the high efficiency in the conversion from gas to stars that needs to be explained. On the other hand, in galaxies with present-day stellar mass less than 10*11M, efficient star formation seems to have been triggered at z ~ 0:2. This work shows that there is a characteristic mass (M » 10*10M) for feedback efficiency (or lack of star formation). For galaxies with masses lower than this, feedback (or star formation suppression) is very efficient while for higher masses it is not. The BCT, determined here for the first time, should be an important observable with which to confront theoretical models of galaxy formation.

The Tenure Process in LIS: A Survey of LIS/IS Program DirectorsHiggins, Susan E., Welsh, Teresa January 2009 (has links)
This survey addressed the experience of receiving tenure through the personal narratives of Directors of Library and Information Science Schools in the USA. Fifty-five respondents were asked to rank the emphasis of the variables operating in tenure based on their experience. Participants agreed that the granting of autonomy via tenure was an opportunity to exercise academic freedom. With tenure came the responsibility to contribute as a citizen of both the institutional and disciplinary communities of the profession. The most prominent factor in determining tenure and promotion decisions for LIS faculty is demonstration of research productivity through peer reviewed publications: articles, books and conference proceedings. Teaching and service are also important components of academic life. It was found that collaboration underpinned collegiality and created an environment conducive to research. In turn, the stability and collegiality of a tenured position made the institution work as a teaching and learning environment.
