It has been the theme, textual organization of suspense story, from the strategies implemented by narrator in order to obtain and maintain attention of their readers. Objectives are segmentation and analysis of product verbal text in episodes, reconstruction of episodes stopped in causality; character modalizations, referencing and changing roles. Methodological procedure is analytical theoretical, performing the following analytical categories. The analysis followed four categories namely: I. Full text segmentation by episodes; II. Temporal ordering of segmented episodes; III. Examination of text referencing concerning the characters, from the modalities to be x look like: maintenance and modification of social roles. IV. The analysis of suspense, situated as climax. The results indicate that: There are different strategies applied by authors to build suspense in verbal text product. Readers build a meaning calculation due to the second narrative route concealment forcing, when recognizing the relevance, making ostensive inferences in order to make it explicit. Modalizations to be x look like, allow to recognize the truth, lying, and mystery. Suspense is defined by the articulation of puzzle-revelation. Conclusion is that suspense stories are a discourse genre that deserve further studies / Esta dissertação está vinculada à linha de pesquisa: Texto e discurso nas modalidades oral e escrita do Programa de Pós Graduação em Língua Portuguesa da PUC-SP. Tem-se por tema a organização textual de história de suspense, a partir de estratégias aplicadas pelo narrador, a fim de obter e manter a atenção de seus leitores. São objetivos a segmentação e análise do texto produto verbal em episódios; a reconstrução dos episódios interrompidos na causalidade; as modalizações de personagens, a referenciação e as mudanças de papéis. O procedimento metodológico é teórico analítico, seguindo as seguintes categorias analíticas: As análises seguiram quatro categorias a saber: I. A segmentação do texto integral por episódios; II. A ordenação temporal dos episódios segmentados; III. O exame da referenciação do texto relativa aos personagens, a partir das modalidades ser x parecer: manutenção e modificação de papéis sociais; IV. A análise do suspense, situado como clímax. Os resultados obtidos indicam que: Há diferentes estratégias aplicadas pelo autor para construção do suspense no texto produto verbal. O leitor constrói um cálculo de significações que devido ao ocultamento do segundo percurso narrativo obriga-o ao reconhecer a relevância, fazer inferências ostensivas, de forma a explicitá-lo. As modalizações de ser + parecer permitem reconhecer a verdade, a mentira, e o mistério. O suspense é definido pela articulação de enigma-revelação. Conclui-se que histórias de suspense são um gênero textual discursivo que merecem outros estudos

Thesis (M.A. (African Languages)) -- University of Limpopo, 2017 / The study is about the use of suspense in Tshivenḓa literature. It focuses on a few selected drama works of prominent authors in Tshivenḓa. In a nutshell the study shows a critical role that suspense plays in drama. La popularité du roman à suspense n’est plus à faire. Maxime Chattam, auteur à succès contemporain, est l’un des représentants importants de ce courant. Dans sa Trilogie du mal, Chattam développe une poétique particulière qui contribue à renouveler le genre en intégrant à ses récits des figures de l’imaginaire « fantastique » (revenant, démon monstrueux et araignée géante) qu’il associe à ses personnages de tueurs en série. Sans pour autant faire plonger ses lecteurs dans un univers fantastique proprement dit, Chattam s’ingénie à ranimer les peurs qui sont associées à ces figures. Cette thèse analyse l’intégration des figures de l’irrationnel dans les trois tomes de la Trilogie du mal (L’âme du mal, In tenebris et Maléfices) et la place qu’elles occupent dans la poétique de l’auteur. Nous étudions les procédés utilisés par Chattam pour créer une atmosphère angoissante et ancrer ces figures au cœur de ses romans. Enfin, nous montrons comment les figures de l’imaginaire « fantastique » permettent au romancier d’amener ses lecteurs à poser un regard plus critique sur la société qui leur est dépeinte.

Protagonist Curtis Dorgan was sitting on his front porch when a Sunset City mail truck delivered a letter from the Idea Salesman that would literally change his life. This thesis explores the genre of gothic literature by outlining the themes and common techniques that writers use. It discusses prominent writers in the genre, as well as critiques their techniques and compares them to my own. Two fiction pieces are accompanied with the critical introduction that fit the gothic literature genre.

Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt die Fragestellung, inwiefern die Darstellung eines visualisierten zeitlichen Hinweisreizes während einer filmischen Narration einen Einfluss auf die Rezeptionsstrategie aufweist. Die Arbeit basiert auf der von Dolf Zillmann (1971) beschriebenen Excitation- Transfer-Theory, welche im Verlauf der Dissertation um eine Zukunftsdimension erweitert wird. Die ursprüngliche Theorie beruht dabei auf der Annahme, dass die langsamere endokrine Erregungsenergie des Menschen vom schnelleren kognitiven System situationsabhängig interpretiert werden kann. Ferner besagt die Theorie, dass durch die inhärente Trägheit des endokrinen Systems eine Erregungssituation nach einem Höhepunkt weiter andauert. Dies wurde unter Zuhilfenahme von biophysiologischen Messgeräten überprüft. Dabei wurde die prinzipielle Aufmerksamkeitszuwendung der Probanden zur Zeitdarstellung mittels einer Blickbewegungskamera fortlaufend überwacht, während gleichzeitig psychophysiologische Erregungswerte, wie Hautleitfähigkeit und Herzrate, aufgezeichnet wurden. Das Aufstellen von Hypothesen durch den Rezipienten über einen potentiellen weiteren Handlungsverlauf bildet in der Literatur (vgl. Ohler, 1994) einen der Hauptgründe für das Empfinden von Spannung während einer Narration. Dabei verläuft die Auflösung der narrativen Handlung stets zwischen den beiden dichotomen Grenzen einer positiven beziehungsweise negativen Handlungsklimax. Die der Arbeit zugrundeliegenden Überlegungen gehen davon aus, dass die Existenz einer visualisierten Zeitangabe dazu führt, dass spezifische Hypothesen über den narrativen Verlauf einer Handlung unter Aspekten des eigenen Zeitempfindens nicht länger realisierbar erscheinen. Je mehr sich die zeitliche Indikation dem Ende annähert, desto stärker ist demzufolge das Spannungsempfinden ausgeprägt. Hierzu zeigte sich, dass unter bestimmten Umständen eine Bereitschaft bei den Rezipienten existiert, die temporale Information in die Rezeption einzubeziehen. Die Auswirkungen auf das Erregungsniveau fielen insgesamt jedoch sehr gering aus. Demzufolge wird angenommen, dass eine zeitliche Visualisierung einen Einfluss auf die Informationsverarbeitung bei einer Filmrezeption hat. Dies konnte jedoch, wie die kritische Diskussion zum Abschluss der Dissertation aufzeigen wird, im Rahmen des verwendeten Designs nicht gezeigt werden.

Written in the tradition of American political suspense thrillers such as "Fail-Safe" and "Seven Days In May," "Bearclaw" uses their idealistic and nationalistic elements to tell a story of an American President eager to lead the world's peoples in a quest to achieve man's "highest destiny," the conquest of space. Believing that this common goal will cause mankind to come together in a spirit of brotherhood, he misreads the historical purpose of the United States and, in the end, refuses to recognize the obvious truths of human frailty and ambition even though he has been victimized by them. The Introduction is a brief survey of the sociopolitical and literary forces which combined to create the American political suspense thriller and an attempt to define its place in the literary canon.
