Impact of Internet of Things on Urban MobilityVaidian, Iulia, Azmat, Muhammad, Kummer, Sebastian 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The urban population is predicted to increase to 66% by 2050. The rapid growth of urbanization and increasing congestion are significant challenges faced by the world today. Innovative solutions in urban mobility are key for a successful development and a sustainable future. The new paradigm, Internet of Things (IoT), facilitates the need for new approaches in urban transportation, leading to a modern concept: Smart Mobility. The boom of technology and innovation from recent years allowed a great expansion of IoT. Furthermore, the number of smart devices that communicate, cooperate and complement each other, grows rapidly in every domain broadening the scope of IoT applications. This paper sets to discuss the impact that IoT might have on urban mobility, mentioning its implications, challenges and technical solutions. It further reviews the advancements made in the transport infrastructure along the years that support the emergence of Smart Mobility. Three main research questions stay at the forefront of this paper which are drafted in pursuit of the solutions for the problems and challenges currently faced by urban transportation. Which leads to a sustainable future with efficient and effective urban transportation system. The paper uses a mix-method approach, using on one hand qualitative research for literature review (State of the field) and on the other hand quantitative research to assess public opinion on the research topic, through an online questionnaire. To answer the research questions with proper arguments, both research methods were necessary, which lead to optimal results. The results of the questionnaire were interpreted based on Spearman's correlation and descriptive statistical analysis. They brought an in-depth view on the public opinion regarding IoT and the developments enabled by this paradigm within the urban mobility sphere. The output of the questionnaire highlights the eagerness of participants usually stuck in traffic to see innovation within urban mobility. Over all the results based on the opinions suggest that the public strongly believes in the Internet of Thing's applications and its adaptation will benefit the urban transportation system. Furthermore, new developments in the urban mobility sphere will be largely embraced.

[en] DO SOCIAL NORMS AFFECT TOWELS REUSE IN A HOTEL? ANEXPERIMENT IN RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] NORMAS SOCIAIS INFLUENCIAM O REUSO DE TOALHAS EM HOTÉIS? UM EXPERIMENTO NO RIO DE JANEIROMARIA LETICIA SOARES BEZERRA DE MELLO 27 April 2015 (has links)
padrão do hotel.
[en] The hotel industry has been implementing a series of sustainability
programs which expected results includes the participation of guests. In hotels,
clients are constantly informed that reusing towels helps to conserve natural
resources. However, percentage of guests reusing towels could be increased. The
use of social norms at messages maybe a factor that increases guests adhesion to
reuse programs. Initially was measured the percentage of guests reusing towels at
an hotel located in Rio de Janeiro with the usual hotels informative card. In a
second phase the card model was modified. A tag involving towels was created
to increase guests perception. The material were divided in three models. For
control group, information included solely the environmental appeal. For the first
experimental group were informed that a majority of the hotel guests had joined
the program. For the second experimental group, was informed that most of the
guests staying at that apartment had joined the program. The results indicates that
the participation of guests in reuse towels program was greater when the
information has become more evident. However, there was no significant
difference between reuse within the control group and the experimental groups
receiving social norm information.

Hacking the loop : How to encourage consumers to upcycle their clothes in order to reduce consumer fashion waste and lessen the environmental impact of fast fashion?Crljen, Tonka January 2019 (has links)
The core of the project lies in upcycling. From the start of the research, I wanted to find new creative ways of upcycling garments and textiles. However, upcycling is a part of a greater whole which deals with addressing the problem of fashion waste. It gives new value to the clothes and prolongs the life span of the clothes. It is a craftivism act since it plugs into an existing system and shapes it towards a more sustainable direction. Thus this project wanted to take a larger approach and include consumers into the process. The purpose of the project was to explore one of the ways to encourage consumers to upcycle their clothes. This was done through an upcycling workshop. In the upcycling workshop, the consumer visualized the way they want their clothes to be upcycled. Their garments were then upcycled using DIY methods such as stitching, patching, and painting. The process was recorded in details. The whole process was then translated into a craftivist zine. The zine demonstrates how to do your own upcycling workshop and how to upcycle three garments. The upcycling workshop and the zine want to encourage the consumer to upcycle by giving them the necessary skills to do so.

Books vs. Technology : An exploratory study of the influence they have on children's developmentWiethüchter, Johanna January 2019 (has links)
With the rise of popularity of technological devices, less children engage in reading books. This paper investigates the influence of technology on young children and points out the advantages and disadvantages of being in contact with digital media on a regular basis. In contrast to that, this project reveals benefits that come from reading and being read to in early childhood. Through designerly research in forms of collaboration and a cultural probe, the essence of children’s books is getting ex- plored. Furthermore, the importance of illustration in combination to text in picture book is being discussed. By exploring the practice of creating an own illustrated children’s book, I evaluate assumptions and findings of my research.

Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management / Employee engagement is a critical business issue for South Africa if we are to take
this country to the next competitive landscape. South African business has been
mired by negative perception of underperformance and uncompetitiveness from
the international community for years in the past, with an over-reliance on the
mining sector. From 1994, this perception has progressively improved and going
forward more urgency from business is required in order to progress even further.
Whilst employee engagement represents only one factor amongst a number of
macro and micro issues, it is central to this country’s economy, business
productivity and sustainability.
In attempting to assist business in this regard, a study of factors that promote
employee engagement has been investigated. The research was qualitative and
quantitative in nature. A number of respondents from across the length and breath
of South Africa participated in the study. Analysis was done on the results and
correlation done to the propositions and the literature.
The findings identified employee engagement strategy, the culture of engagement,
leadership and management, talent mindset, communication and knowledge
sharing, and organisations’ reputation and branding as prominent factors in
business in South Africa.
Resulting from the research, an employee engagement model is proposed which
attempts to integrate key lessons for business.

Exploring corporate social responsibility initiatives in South Africa : the case of the TISO Foundation in Johannesburg.Malm, Angela Eugenia 27 August 2012 (has links)
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) continues to gain attention amongst corporate bodies
and is the medium through which the private sector contributes to development. The last
decade has seen a significant growth in CSR initiative in South Africa, partly due to the
implementation of public polices such as the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) Code of
Good Practice and the various industry charters that obligate corporate institutions to
contribute towards the reconstruction efforts of the nation. As a result many organizations
have adopted strategies that include social development projects as part of their core business
objectives, thus the initiation of certain projects and programmes as part of their CSR
contributions to the reconstruction efforts. Although CSR has roots in philanthropic activities,
it has become evident that when CSR initiatives are designed strategically to embody the
holistic views of business goals towards profit making as well as community goals that
promote positive development. Anecdotal evidence suggests that projects collapse after
corporations discontinue funding due to lack of community involvement which renders CSR
initiatives unresponsive to the developmental needs of communities. The study sought to
explore the extent to which corporate social responsibility initiatives were responsive to the
educational needs of beneficiaries in Johannesburg. It also explored beneficiary perceptions
on how CSR initiatives can be sustained. The study population was drawn from Tiso
Foundation and three partnering organisations. A qualitative case study design was utilised in
the study to obtain in depth information from the research participants concerning the CSR
initiatives of Tiso Foundation. Semi-structured interview schedules were used to conduct
interviews with both beneficiaries of the CSR initiatives and key informants. The research
sample consisted of 16 beneficiaries of Tiso Foundation’s CSR initiatives and 6 key
informants that were drawn from Tiso Foundation and partnering organizations.
The findings revealed that the CSR initiatives were responsive to the needs of the
beneficiaries by providing them access to education and skills development. The findings
also established the nature of beneficiary participation in CSR initiatives as partially
participatory. The study recommended that CSR initiatives should take a developmental
approach towards programme executions to ensure full participation of beneficiaries in order
to ensure sustainability of the programmes even after funding is discontinued. The study also
iv
suggests the collaborative partnership of government and the private sector towards
sustainable development by enhancing and complimenting each other’s efforts.

The contributions of and challenges faced by developmental Non-Governmental Organisations in Gauteng.Ozigbo, Obiageri Comfort 29 June 2011 (has links)
This research was aimed at establishing the contributions of developmental nongovernmental
organisations (NGOs) to social welfare service delivery in Gauteng, South
Africa, and to examine the challenges they have faced since the transition from Apartheid
social welfare to a developmental welfare paradigm. This study revealed how developmental
NGOs function to meet the needs of citizens, especially the marginalised and vulnerable class
of the society. It also examined the contributions of developmental NGOs in terms of
capacity building, physical infrastructure development and their sustainability.
The research was qualitative and exploratory in nature, and a multiple case study design was
applied. The research sample of 15 participants was drawn from three developmental NGOs
registered with the Department of Social Development, Gauteng, South Africa. Five
employees from each developmental NGO were interviewed using a semi-structured
interview schedule. A face to face interview was the method of data collection. The data
collected was analysed. The main findings showed that there is evidence of positive
contributions to capacity building and infrastructural development at the grassroots level.
However, funding remains the biggest challenge, which then affects the sustainability of
development.

Factors influencing the sustainability of local drug action committees in the Free State Province : case study of Mangaung Municipality.Matsenyane, Leloko Edwin 05 September 2014 (has links)
The Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) is the closest body to the community which is
made up of individuals from different stakeholders at a local level to coordinate the activities
aimed at the prevention of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking within the
communities. Since the implementation of the committees, the sustainability of these
committees has been a challenge in the Free State Province. The study endeavoured to
explore factors which influence the sustainability of these committees in the Free State
Province. A qualitative research approach that was explorative and descriptive in nature was
employed. A case study design was used. Purposive sampling was applied to select the
participants from two LDACs in Mangaung Municipality. A semi-structured interview
schedule was used to collect the data during individual in-depth interviews with five
participants. Thematic content analysis was used to analyse the data. The main findings
indicated that there was a lack of knowledge among the committee members about their
roles, responsibilities and mandates. Their inability to coordinate the stakeholder activities as
well as the limited knowledge about the relationship between the Free State Mini Drug
Master Plan (FSMDMP) and the LDACs also appeared to be challenging. The main
conclusions drawn from the study are that despite the excellent structure of the LDACs to
coordinate the implementation of the FSMDMP, the members of the LDACs are neither
knowledgeable about nor capacitated to fulfil their roles and responsibilities to meet the
intended requirements and implement the activities of the FSMDMP, factors which hamper
sustainability. The lack of financial support from Government to fund the activities of the
LDACs in the Province is another major impediment in terms of sustainability.
