Assembled Garments : Exploring the potential of secondhand garments as new material and method for fashion design

Dramshöj, Lärke January 2021 (has links)
The interest of this work is found in the potential ways of reconstructing 2hand garments and how form and wear can be explored within that field. The methods applied on 2hand garments investigate traditional usage, shape and how to create new form and silhouettes, while allowing a reconstructed garment to be reversed/transformed back to original state. The aim is that the garments are to keep it’s original value, and thus making its sustainable potential higher. Significantly, the project discusses how our pre-existing visual perception of unwanted 2hand garments can be expanded, when they are reconstructed and recycled (unharmed).

The Green Building Cookbook

Wiklund, Hannes January 2022 (has links)
The initial aim with the Green Building Cookbook was to create an archive of sustainable building materials and elements, that could potentially serve as a guide and knowledge-base for architects. In the course of the project it has developed into an archive of the parts making up one specific building. This enabled thorough research and development of the chosen materials. This method of reviewing, selecting and adapting is what formed the process and in turn the building, Villa Håknäs. The shift towards a more sustainable construction sector has already begun, and the we as architects can be a driving force in that shift.

Varvet : Circular Co-Living

Angvald Westersson, Josefine January 2023 (has links)
A sustainable student housing project in Varvsstaden, Malmö, Sweden, that promotes a circular way of living. By upcycling materials from the former shipyard, the project creates new housing, public spaces and utilizing existing resources. Efficient use of built surfaces, support for community needs, and accessible housing options are key aspects of Varvet. The project also aims to contribute to cultural sustainability by encouraging social interactions among residents. Varvet recognizes the importance of community living as an affordable and accessible option for promoting sustainability. By sharing resources, and facilitating new social interactions, co-living can contribute to a safer and more culturally sustainable society. The project offers not only a home for 90 students but also diverse experiences and activities, such as purchasing locally grown food, sport activities and enjoying live music. Sustainable development requires considering both environmental and social aspects. Varvet - Circular Co-Living embodies this approach, advocating for more sustainable living practices that prioritize the needs of both present and future generations.

The relationship between sustainability and financial performance : An empirical study of Swedish equity funds

Karlsson, Erik, Grundberg, Johan January 2022 (has links)
The general relationship between sustainability and financial performance has been well examined, and there doesn't seem to be any general significant tradeoff between the two. However, the results are mixed and the many ways of defining both sustainability and financial performance has provided room for different interpretations and methodologies. This study aims to use a relatively new measure of sustainability, Morningstar Sustainability Rating (MSR), and to see if there is a relationship with the risk-adjusted return of actively traded equity funds in Sweden. To calculate risk-adjusted return the Fama & French three factor model was used. After the two variables were established, a descriptive statistics analysis and a regression analysis was conducted, with two portfolios of different sustainability scores. The results were quite the opposite of that suggested by the general literature and our hypothesis that there would indeed be a positive relationship between the variables. However, we list a couple of potential reasons for this. The risk-free rate is lower today than at the time of many other studies. This could affect the outcome of the analysis. The sustainability measures can also differ quite significantly, and value aspects differently. A relatively new measure, with an “updated” view of sustainability, could therefore yield a different result than slightly older ones.

CORPORATE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE STAINLESS STEEL INDUSTRY : A case study on the environmental efforts of Corporation X

Hellgren, Anton, Lindström, Albin January 2022 (has links)
How to integrate sustainability into business activities is discussed within corporations more than ever today. With increasing sustainability requirements set by governments and non-governmental organizations, corporations in all industries are facing challenges to readjust their businesses. The emission intense stainless steel industry is no exception. Through a case study of Corporation X, this thesis aims to investigate how Facility Y works with sustainability aspects and what could be done to enhance the level of environmental sustainability. It is done by first exploring what sustainability is. When a common understanding of sustainability hasbeen established, it is explored how a corporation can be identified in terms of their sustainability commitment and ongoing projects. Lastly, an investigation of how a corporation could enhance the level of substantiality is conducted through four pillars to fulfill the bottom line. We found that Corporation X is somewhat proactive and have a minimization approach towardenvironmental sustainability. In other words, they are considered to aim at ‘being less bad’ rather than being ‘more good’ in their sustainability work. Corporation X thus face challenges with increasing requirements and should enhance their level of sustainability to remain competitive. With an analysis of the four pillars, we concluded that Facility Y should prioritize improvements within the pillar of measurement and disclosure since they lack in terms of reliable carbon dioxide emission metrics on a product level. We further argue that the four pillars are intertwined but should be prioritized differently based on the prerequisites of thecorporation at hand. The recommended prioritization at Facility Y on measurement will thuschange when there are reliable carbon dioxide emission measurements. A reassessment of what is most important must be done.

Spatial Sustainability

Torarp, Johan January 2021 (has links)
The building sector was in 2018 responsible almost 40% of Sweden’s domestic greenhouse gas emissions. These numbers demands a lot from our profession and has made the topic of sustainability essential. In the Brundtland Reports definition of sustainability it’s called for  ”Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Within these words, sustainability could be defined as that what lasts.
The project Spatial Sustainability aims to explore the architecture that lasts, based on the conclusion that this demands balance between the contradicting terms adaptability and stability.
I believe that the architecture that’s both adaptable and stable should be, re-usable and capable of being re-organised, but it should also have a strong physical presence in it’s urban situation. In the intersection of this contradiction I hope to find one path leading to long-lasting architecture.

Biomimicry: Emulating the Closed-Loops Systems of the Oak Tree for Sustainable Architecture

Drake, Courtney 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Biomimicry comes from bios, life, and mimesis, to imitate. Biomimicry is becoming an increasingly well-known topic in the field of architecture, imitating nature’s designs and processes to solve human problems. This project uses the oak tree as a model, measure, and mentor to derive sustainable architecture. Biomimicry is examined as a holistic methodology with six steps: identify, interpret, discover, abstract, emulate, and evaluate. Using this methodology, this project investigates oak tree’s closed-loop systems including water, oxygen, and food. The synergies that exist within these systems are emulated to develop a complex green infrastructure of building and landscape systems. This project provides an illustrated process using the biomimicry methodology to generate sustainable architecture.

Quynh Anh Mai Nguyen 19 September 2020 (has links)
The dissertation chooses Vietnam as a typical case to address the gap in microfinance studies. Instead of focusing on the beneficiaries of the microfinance system, as many studies have been done, the subjects of this study are microfinance institutions (MFIs). The objective is to suggest a balanced sustainability approach for MFIs in Vietnam that refers to governance practices, legal environmental, and social and financial objectives as equally important. Particularly, it identifies the constraints and the potential, and suggests workable approaches to support Vietnam microfinance providers in extending and developing services throughout the country in a financially sustainable manner. / 博士(現代アジア研究) / Doctor of Philosophy in Contemporary Asian Studies / 同志社大学 / Doshisha University
