The talk of the town : oral communication and networks of information in sixteenth-century St. Gallen

Roth, Carla January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores oral communication in St. Gallen through the lens of the linen merchant Johannes Rütiner (1501-1556/7). By reconstructing Rütiner's network of informants and probing four genres of communication within their respective social contexts - jokes, gossip, rumour, and memory narratives -, it explores early modern sociability, the circulation of information, and the relationship between oral testimony, manuscript, and print. Sixteenth-century St. Gallers relied heavily on informal, oral networks to provide them with news and information of all kinds. An individual's access to information was thus to a large degree determined by the social networks within which they spent their life. As St. Gallers sought to secure a place for themselves in such circles, they in turn used jokes, gossip, and information of all kinds as a form of "communicative social capital", allowing them to present themselves as witty, well-connected, and knowledgeable. Rather than treating the instability of oral narratives as evidence of the inherent unreliability of the spoken word, this study proposes to analyse their evolution as a key to early modern mentalities. It also calls into question some of the dominant narratives regarding the printing revolution. Not only did oral communication continue to play a central role in the dissemination of information in the first half of the sixteenth century, but existing systems of "source criticism", developed in the context of dominantly oral networks, moreover cast doubt on the reliability of anonymous prints: because they made their trust in a piece of news conditional on their trust in the messenger, Rütiner and his fellow citizens often preferred oral narratives provided by familiar, trustworthy informants.

Chocolate, Cheese and Gender Equality? : How Switzerland’s national culture influences the implementation of gender equality policies in companies

Böhlen, Marc-André, Hirschi, Thierry January 2018 (has links)
Gender equality is one of the most topical issues of all. Many researchers around the world are addressing the issue of equal opportunities in the labour market and are looking for ways to ensure this in all sectors of the economy. This paper addresses this issue and aims to gain a deep understanding of the influence of a national culture on the implementation of gender equality policies within companies. With the help of a qualitative research method, the various factors of culture were examined and their relationship to the gender-specific understanding of a society analysed. The findings show the effects on companies operating in Switzerland and combine the experience of case companies with the literature already available. In order to test and further explore this combination, the authors of the thesis opted for an abductive research approach to repeatedly expand understanding with new literature and develop a more relevant comprehension of the influence of culture. The entire literature research finally created a framework that shows the links between the various theories and provides a clear overview of the background. With the help of selected case companies, important insights could be gained and with this empirical data, a detailed analysis for a better understanding of the influence of cultures on the implementation of gender equality policies could be achieved. These findings, combined with the existing theory and theoretical synthesis, provide a clear analysis and finally provide the reader with an insight into the implications, recommendations and limitations as well as suggestions for further research. Culture has a major influence on the implementation of gender equality policies. This paper shows how the various companies in Switzerland approach this influence and how Swedish companies with business operations in Switzerland in particular are pushing ahead with the implementation of policies for equality between women and men. This can give companies in Switzerland an indication of how they have to deal with cultural conditions within a country and how they can make optimum use of these for their human resource management.

Le secret bancaire. Etude de droit comparé (France-Suisse) / Banking secrecy : Study of Comparative Law ( France , Switzerland)

Alavi, Alexandre 05 October 2017 (has links)
While Swiss banking secrecy is regularly the subject of virulent criticism and attacks on the international political scene, it is necessary to note the extent of each crisis. Accused of facilitating money laundering, tax evasion and financing of terrorism, international pressures from both foreign countries (the United States, France, etc.) and international bodies (the Cooperation Organization And Economic Development-OECD, the Financial Action Task Force-FATF, etc.). Led the Swiss authorities to frame banking secrecy by multiplying the attacks on this secrecy. This has the effect of considerably weakening the scope of Swiss banking secrecy. Indeed, even a few years ago it was possible to say that there are real differences between the French and Swiss banking secrets in that Swiss banking secrecy was perceived as a wider banking secrecy than Banking secrecy, this situation now seems to be over. Since the recognition of Swiss banking secrecy at the legislative level, the legal basis for this secrecy has changed very little, but the many limitations that have been brought to the secrecy over time have largely contributed to its Its substance and to weaken its scope, so much so that it is now possible to affirm a real convergence between French and Swiss banking secrets.

Tichá, Alžběta January 2015 (has links)
Title: Monologue in contemporary drama of the French-speaking Switzerland Author: Alžběta Tichá Department: Institute of Romance studies Supervisor: doc. PhDr. Eva Voldřichová Beránková, Ph.D. Keywords: Drama, Switzerland, monologue, French, literatures of French speaking countries Abstract: The main aim of the present thesis is to present monological works of authors from the French part of Switzerland. Due to the fact that French Switzerland shares a large part of its literary development with neighbouring France, this thesis is divided into two parts. The first one is concerned with monologue in French theatre in general. There are three chapters that present issues related to the definition of theatrical monologue, the development of monologue as an individual form, main questions that arise in connection with contemporary monological plays, as well as several French dramatists that have had a significant influence on this specific genre. The second part is focused on works of three authors coming from French Switzerland. Each of them has written and published at least three monological plays. Namely, these are Robert Pinget, Jacques Probst and David France Jakubec. They all represent completely different creative approaches therefore each of them is presented in a separate chapter. The main objective...

Postavení bulváru ve Švýcarsku na příkladu Blicku / The position of the tabloid press in Switzerland

Kadaníková, Zuzana January 2011 (has links)
The thesis "Position of the tabloid press in Switzerland on the example of Blick" deals with the position of tabloid press in general as well as with its development in Switzerland. There is a characteristic of the tabloid press and the necessary economical and social circumstances. The tabloid press is described from the point of view of its signs, form and the way it communicates with the audience. The thesis also describes the history and natural conditions of Switzerland that determinate the development of the press. Switzerland is the country with four official languages that might be regarded as an obstruction to the print media (for example Italian is spoken only by 6.5% of the total 7.785.000 population) on the other hand there is a potential of specialized audience and therefore custom made titles. The third chapter deals with the history of tabloid press in Switzerland on the example of the publishing house Ringier. The tabloid daily Blick has been a part of its portfolio since 1959 (circulation 214.880, audience according to Ringier 628.000). Ringier is one of the most powerful players on the media scene of Switzerland. The last chapter describes the general trend of the change of media towards tabloid type, the trend is supported by the Swiss media quality research done at Universität Zürich.
