The Analysis of The Business Strategy of Electronics Equipment Distribution Using Service Provider As a Model

The life cycle of the semiconductor equipment industry has evolved from a fast growth high profit ramp-up phase to one of much slower growth and intense competitiveness that has squeezed profit margins. In this environment, one of the key success factors for semiconductor equipment suppliers is product management. A correct product planning and implementation strategy will generate a healthy market performance and profitable business operations. Semiconductor equipment manufacturers and agents need to consider their product competencies to develop a planning strategy for new product introduction, which includes product positioning, target market selection as well as new product introduction guidance and evaluation procedures. This thesis focuses on industrial data analysis and a case study based on face-to-face interviews with several people at various positions within semiconductor equipment suppliers. The major approach of this study is a description of competitive strategy through a qualitative analysis of the industry, and an analysis the key factors¡Xincluding product management, product lifetime cycle and knowledge management¡Xthat influence the technology service ability of an equipment company. The conclusions of this study are presented as follows: Semiconductor agency has to introduce new product to different market segments for its product life time extension or future business development as well as product competence enhancement. New technology development trends become a threat to existing technology and products, which will replace current products in the market within a short period. Product management needs a procedure to evaluate the new product and the service income potential in order to assess the product¡¦s profit and loss prospects. Then the management can adjust the business priorities to maximize total company revenue through periodic review. Future studies should consider the effect of changes in the industrial structure and/or the market environment and analyze the impact on market development risks and strategies.

Nominal Interest Rate Targeting and Endogenous Growth

Beginning with the paper of Zhang (2000), we develop a pecuniary transactions cost (TC) approach to build up a monetary endogenous growth model and examine the principal relationships and results concerning nominal interest rate targeting and growth. Meanwhile, according to Hahn (1991) and Eriksson (1995) pointed out there has been a trend decline in labor supply, we introduce the labor-leisure choice of Turnovsky (2000) to amend the utility function and the production function. In the comparison of two macro-models, we can conclude: 1. Under the inelastic labor supply endogenous growth model, if the central bank raises the nominal interest rate targeting will damage to the growth rate. 2. Under the elastic labor supply endogenous growth model, if the central bank raise the nominal interest rate targeting will induce ambiguous effect of the growth rate depending on the labor-leisure choice reaction of nominal interest rate, the bigger reaction may get the higher growth rate.

The Effects Of The Inflation Targeting Regime On The Istanbul Stock Exchange

The primary purpose of this study is to test the effects of inflation targeting in Turkey in terms of providing stability in the financial system by lowering the volatility in the Turkish stock market. Although there are many factors other than monetary policy which can affect stock market volatility, this study examines whether the volatility due to monetary policy can be reduced by increasing the accuracy of investors&rsquo / expectations about the central bank&rsquo / s future actions. In the first part, a &ldquo / Volatility Analysis&rdquo / is conducted for three sub-periods including the pre- and post-periods of the implementation of inflation targeting in order to see whether the volatility in the Istanbul Stock Exchange changed over time. Second, an &ldquo / Announcement Effect Analysis&rdquo / is carried out by using the central bank&rsquo / s interest rate and inflation rate announcement dates in order to evaluate how investors&rsquo / expectations react to a change in these rates during period from 2002 to 2007. Finally, a &ldquo / Combined Analysis&rdquo / is done in order to examine the relationship between the returns in the Turkish stock market and the surprise caused by the realized interest and inflation rates being different from their expected values. The empirical findings about the level of volatility indicate that there is a decline in volatility of the Istanbul Stock Exchange returns when volatility is compared on a pre- and post-policy period basis. Also, it is found that the announcement effect was present, meaning interest rate announcements generally came as a surprise to stock market participants. However, this announcement effect has a notably decreasing trend from 2002 to 2007 which is another evidence of the inflation targeting regime&rsquo / s success at reducing stock market volatility. Finally, the &ldquo / combined analysis&rdquo / shows that CBT&rsquo / s power to effect stock returns and to direct investors&rsquo / expectations increases from 2002 to 2007.

Exchange Rate Pass-through And Inflation Targeting

In this study, we aim to investigate the impact of inflation targeting (IT) and the recent global disinflation on exchange rate pass-through (ERPT) using quarterly data from 1980:1 to 2009:1 for 51 industrial and emerging market (EM) countries. To this end, we employ not only the conventional panel data estimation methods but also the recent Common Correlated Effects Pooled estimation procedure by Pesaran (2006) which allows estimating the impact of common global shocks such as global inflation. We also explore some other determinants of ERPT during the recent global disinflation period. Furthermore, we consider asymmetric effects of positive and negative output gaps as proxies for domestic demand conditions on ERPT for IT industrial and EM countries. Our results strongly suggest that, for the non-IT samples, ERPT is significantly higher in EM countries than industrial countries. For every country groups excluding Euro area countries, we find that ERPT declined substantially during the recent global disinflation period. The decline in the ERPT is, however, much higher in IT countries especially in EM ones. One striking result is the convergence of ERPT coefficients of EM countries to industrial IT countries with the adoption of IT. This supports the endogenous response of ERPT to monetary policy credibility and price stability. Consequently, a high ERPT, per se, may be interpreted as not a binding constraint for the adoption of IT as it tends to decline with the success of monetary policy regime. We also find that ERPT appears to be more sensitive to positive output gaps in IT industrial countries whilst it does not have such a response to positive or negative output gaps in IT emerging market countries.

Preparation Of Polyethylene Glycol Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles For Targeting Of Cancer Cells

Conventional cancer chemotherapies cannot differentiate between healthy and cancer cells, and lead to severe side effects and systemic toxicity. In the last decades, different kinds of controlled drug delivery systems have been developed to overcome these shortcomings of chemotherapeutics. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) are potentially important in cancer treatment since they can be targeted to tumor site by an externally applied magnetic field. In this study, it is aimed to synthesize folic acid conjugated / polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated magnetic nanoparticles with appropriate size, surface chemistry, magnetization and biocompatibility to be used in biomedical applications. First MNP were synthesized, then covered with oleic and PEG / and finally conjugated with folic acid. A detailed characterization of synthesized nanoparticles was done by TEM, XRD, FTIR, VSM and XTT analyses. MNP synthesized by the rapid addition of ammonium hydroxide exhibited more spherical nanoparticles with a narrower size distribution. Agglomeration tendency of naked nanoparticles was prevented by oleic acid addition during the synthesis. The most common gene transfer vehicle used in gene therapy protocols are mammalian virus vectors. Specifically, retroviruses are one of the most common viral vectors used since they are able to permanently integrate their transgene into the host cell genome, providing, in principal, to a long-term cure. The potential applications of gene therapies are vast, ranging from monogenic disorders such as cystic fibrosis to complex gene disorders such as cancer. However, the application of such therapies in clinical settings has been limited partially because of inefficient gene delivery of the therapeutic gene to diseased cells. Furthermore, safety concerns of accidently altering the genetic expression in healthy bystander cells or nearby tissue has increased the interest in creating targeted viral vectors which infect only the diseased cells without infecting others. Thus, the success of gene therapy will depend on identifying and understanding the parameters critical for virus entry into cells, including factors that facilitate virus absorption onto the cell surface, virus binding, and fusion. The objective of this thesis was to understand the role of lipids in binding and infection, and to investigate the use of lipid-based conjugates to alter the surface of virus particles.

Segment transition within the Cruise Line Industry : From a perspective of Royal Caribbean International

<p>A cruise, meaning a travel on a ship where one visit a number of places is a form of holiday alternative that has grown rapidly the last decade.</p><p>Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is the largest actor on the Swedish market and is now changing its target market strategy. The company is transitioning its focus from the old traditional more affluent clientele, to target a wider span of customers where the people between 30 and 50 years of age are in focus and have become the main target group. Therefore activities aboard are added to suit these customers specifically.</p><p>What the authors of this thesis want to find out by using both interviews and questionnaires is whether the general opinion about cruising is coherent with the message that Royal Caribbean International is trying to convey. The authors also want to know if the targeting efforts are optimal when trying to alter people’s mindset and attract a new type of younger customers.</p><p>According to the performed survey, the brand awareness of RCI was best within the main target group. The most efficient media vehicle in communicating RCI’s brand has been brochures followed by newspapers and word of mouth. Somewhat surprisingly neither TV nor Internet was among top three of the most awareness creating media vehicles.</p><p>Through these media vehicles RCI tries to convey that younger people are now more in focus. However, people older than 50 are the most positive towards going on a cruise themselves. At the same time the whole population seem to think that cruising is best suited for people older than 50. No matter how old the respondents to the questionnaire were they believed that cruising was better suited for people older than themselves.</p><p>The population is getting older and the proportion of people over 50 years will increase dramatically compared to younger people within the next decades. Still RCI is focusing on adding activities and market themselves towards a younger group. Family behavior is changing and people tend to start a family later. RCI is therefore targeting families to a greater extent in order to attract the young but at the same time retain the older and proportionally growing customers groups.</p><p>Cruise prices have decreased and RCI is now more than ever not only targeting more affluent people. It is supposed to be afforded by a wide span. Even so, people tend to think that cruising is better suited for high-income takers. At the same time it is widely associated with luxury, not affordability.</p><p>Associations to cruising are overall positive but they are not necessarily exactly the ones that RCI is trying to communicate the most. Some perceptions are in line with the message RCI are trying to convey while others are based on the established prejudices that surrounds the cruise line industry and that are hard to erase. Even though people typically see cruising as something positive, they are still according to this study not to any great extent considering going on a cruise.</p>

One key to two doors : Dual targeting peptides and membrane mimetics

A targeting peptide at the N-terminus of a precursor protein usually directs the protein synthesized in the cytosol to a specific organelle in the cell. Interestingly, some targeting peptides, so-called dual targeting peptides (dTPs) can target their protein to both mitochondria and chloroplasts. In order to understand the mechanism of dual targeting, a dTP from threonyl tRNA synthetase (ThrRS-dTP) was investigated as a model dTP in this thesis work. The results suggest that ThrRS-dTP is intrinsically disordered in solution but has an α-helical propensity at the N-terminal part. Tom20 and Toc34 are the two primary receptors on the outer membranes of mitochondria and chloroplasts, respectively. We found that the N-terminal half of the ThrRS-dTP sequence, including an amphiphilic helix, is important for the interaction with Tom20. This part also contains a φχχφφ motif, where φ represents a hydrophobic/aromatic residue and χ represents any amino acid residue. In contrast, neither the amphiphilic helix nor φχχφφ motif in ThrRS-dTP has any special role for its interaction with Toc34. Instead, the entire sequence of ThrRS-dTP is important for Toc34 interaction, including the C-terminal part which is barely affected by Tom20 interaction. In addition, the role of lipids in the organelle membrane for the recognition of dual targeting peptides during protein import is also the focus of this thesis. The tendency to form α-helix in ThrRS-dTP, which is not observable in solution by CD, becomes obvious in the presence of lipids and DPC micelles. To be able to study such interactions, DMPC/DHPC isotropic bicelles under different conditions have also been characterized. These results demonstrate that bicelles with a long-chained/short-chained lipid ratio q = 0.5 and a concentration larger than 75 mM should be used to ensure that the classic bicelle morphology persists. Moreover, we developed a novel membrane mimetic system containing the galactolipids, MGDG or DGDG, which have been proposed to be important for protein import into chloroplasts. Up to 30% MGDG or DGDG lipids were able to be integrated into bicelles. The local dynamics of the galactolipids in bicelles displays two types of behavior: the sugar head-group and the glycerol part are rigid, and the acyl chains are flexible. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: In press.</p>

The antitumor activity of tumor-targeted RNA replicase-based plasmid DNA

Over the past several decades, there have been numerous attempts to utilize synthetic dsRNA to control tumor growth in animal models and clinical trials. Recently, it has become clear that intracellular dsRNA is more effective than extracellular dsRNA in promoting apoptosis and orchestrating adaptive immune response. To overcome the difficulty in delivering a large dose of synthetic dsRNA into tumors, while avoiding systemic toxicity we propose to deliver a RNA replicase-based plasmid DNA, hypothesizing that the dsRNA generated by the replicase-based plasmid in tumor cells will inhibit tumor growth. We evaluated the anti-tumor activity of a plasmid (pSIN-beta) that encodes the sindbis RNA replicase genes in mice with model tumors (TC-1 lung cancer cells or B16 melanoma cells) and compared it to a traditional pCMV-beta plasmid. In cell culture, transfection of tumor cells with pSIN-beta generated dsRNA. In mice with model tumors, pSIN-beta more effectively inhibited tumor growth than pCMV-beta, and in some cases, eradicated the tumors. RNA replicase-based plasmid may be exploited to generate intracellular dsRNA to control tumor growth. The feasibility of further improving the antitumor activity of the RNA replicase-based plasmid by targeting it into tumors cells was also evaluated. An epidermal growth factor (EGF)-conjugated, PEGylated cationic liposome was developed to deliver the RNA replicase-based plasmid, pSIN-beta, into EGFR-over-expressing human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-468) in vitro and in vivo. Delivery of the pSIN-beta using the EGF receptor-targeted liposome more effectively controlled the growth of MDA-MB-468 tumors in mice than using un-targeted liposome. Finally the potential of further improving the antitumor activity of the pSIN-beta plasmid by incorporating interleukin-2 (IL2) gene into the plasmid was investigated. The resultant pSIN-IL2 plasmid was delivered to mouse melanoma cells that over-express the sigma receptor. The pSIN-IL2 plasmid was more effective at controlling the growth of B16 melanoma in mice when complexed with sigma receptor targeted AA-PEG-liposomes than with the untargeted liposomes. Importantly, the pSIN-IL2 plasmid was more effective than pSIN-beta plasmid at controlling the growth of B16 melanoma in mice, and B16-bearing mice that were treated with pSIN-IL2 had an elevated number of activated CD4+, CD8+, and natural killer cells, compared to those treated with pSIN-beta. / text
