A study to determine the effect of chiropractic treatment on the serving speed of male tennis players

Palmer, Paul Anthony 04 June 2012 (has links)
M.Tech. / This study was conducted to determine whether Chiropractic treatment was beneficial in improving a male tennis player’s serve speed. Thirty participants were recruited and placed into a single group. Participants were between the ages of 18 and 40 years and selected based on the inclusion criteria being met. Participants had to be injury-free at the time of the research study and fall within a specified skill level (Provincial colours must have been attained at some stage in the participants tennis career). The participants were treated six times over a 3-week period and fifteen serve speed measurements were taken before the first consultation, and following the third and six consultations. A full case history, full physical examination, cervical spine regional examination and shoulder regional examination were conducted at the first consultation to locate joint restrictions and myofascial trigger points in the associated musculature of these areas. Diversified Chiropractic techniques were employed in the treatment of any restrictions found and trigger points were treated using either dry needling or ischaemic compression techniques. The results were interpreted by an outsourced statistician and the data was analysed using the ANOVA model and a Box Cox transformation was applied to transform the scale to normality. This yielded data onto which a parametric approach could be applied. According to the analysis, the treatment applied to the participants produced significant increases in their serve speed over the three sessions, although some increases were more prominent than others. This study concluded that Chiropractic treatment was effective in increasing the serve speed of a male tennis player and the study provides evidence that the effects of Chiropractic treatment could enhance performance in a sporting environment, perhaps even on a sustainable timeline with maintenance treatment.

Finite element modelling of tennis racket impacts to predict spin generation

Weir, David January 2013 (has links)
Over the last 20-30 years the subject of spin in tennis has become increasingly important. A great deal of work has been done to establish the effects which, increased levels of spin have, on shots. The most prominent effect of increased spin in a tennis shot is the resulting deviation in flight which allows players to, amongst other things, strike the ball harder with top-spin in the knowledge that it will still fall inside the court due to the extra aerodynamic downward force. With such significant advantages available racket manufacturers are naturally keen to maximise spin generation. That being said, very little research has been performed into the subject of spin generation in tennis and the affecting factors. This thesis details the development of a finite element model which is to be used to allow a greater understanding of spin generation and how varying properties such as string density (the number of strings in a string-bed), gauge and orientation affect its magnitude. The primary aim, or goal, of this research is to create an FE model which can be used to model oblique impacts and measure the resulting spin. Whilst considerable focus was placed on developing novel, modelling techniques to create the FE model, a great deal of emphasis was also placed on its validation. The validity of the model was examined under static loading conditions, such as that experienced during stringing. The dynamic performance was also validated using a combination of modal analysis and high speed video of dynamic impacts. Each of the validation methods provided assurance of the models performance, with all error margins less than 5%. The two areas of the FE model which required the most attention were the interaction properties (specifically coefficient of friction (COF)) and material properties. Previous studies have sought to obtain a single value for the COF of a tennis racket/ball system but this study examines how the COF varies as the strings interact first, with themselves and secondly with the ball. Each of the validation methods (dynamic and static) were deemed successful as they provided concise data which could be readily compared with the results produced by the FE model. Having validated the model s performance, with respect to predicting outbound spin, a number of oblique impact angles were modelled to allow a greater understanding of how the mechanisms of spin generation change with the inbound trajectory of the ball. This analysis showed that for the impact conditions studied the contact time of the impact was reduced from 6.2 milliseconds to 5.7 milliseconds when the angle was increased from 32 degrees to 40 degrees. Furthermore, a number of novel string-beds were modelled, with varying string orientations (between 30 degrees and 60 degrees relative to the rackets frame) and subjected to a similar analysis procedure, with their results providing the concluding section of the thesis.

Situació actual del tennis femení a Espanya

Francin Veciana, Montserrat 15 June 2012 (has links)
This study is focused on the female players fighting for a position in the ranking of the professional female players. It’s necessary to know the difficulties of this moment of life in the female players world and, what’s to more important, the reasons to give up the practice. One of the most important objectives of this work is to the reality of female tennis players in Spain. I would like to present a study of the characteristics of the trainings in female players, and discover the efficiency of the professional trainers, with the intention of providing information in this field, for the capacities advance and improvement the sport level. If the results prove it, we will need to conclude with a reflection about the introduction of qualitative variables in the way of preparing the female players. For the development of the research, we will have interviews with technicians that, at this moment, are training female players to boost the jump to the professional field. We have considered the different variables that have a certain influence. We have also taken into account the opinion of active and retired female players of the competition.

Tennis ball degradation

Steele, Carolyn January 2006 (has links)
Despite anecdotal evidence of changes to tennis ball characteristics and play properties, little research has been directed towards understanding the causes and effects of tennis ball degradation. Improved racket technology and player fitness have contributed to an increase in the speed of the game, yet balls have seen few advancements over the same period. There are several obvious factors contributing to tennis ball degradation: natural pressure loss in pressurised balls, changes to the cloth covering due to court and racket impacts, and precipitation and environmental factors. As recent tennis research has focused on the new balls, there is a need to investigate other ball conditions present in the game of tennis. This thesis provides a structured investigation into the causes and effects of ball degradation, an objective assessment of the effects of degradation on ball performance, and incorporates subjective perceptions of all aesthetics and play properties noted by players. Particular attention is given to ball fuzziness. Excessive fuzziness can occur from manufacturing variability, court and racket interactions, and environmental conditions - though there is currently no standardised method to assess ball surface condition. An objective measure of ball fuzziness has been developed and used in the analysis of nearly 4000 individual ball images. The effects of court and racket impacts, precipitation, natural pressure loss, and repeated impacts have been analysed for their effects on ball degradation. An assessment of ball performance utilised ball impact and aerodynamic data to determine significant differences between balls and develop an improved ball trajectory model.
