Looking to the Past to Plan a Future

Keutzer, Ryan Elizabeth 01 January 2009 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Ryan Elizabeth Keutzer, for the Master degree in Architecture, presented on July 10, 2009, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: LOOKING TO THE PAST TO PLAN A FUTURE MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Craig Anz Preserving, conserving, rehabilitating, renovating and adaptively reusing historic buildings is one of the most "sustainable"*; building practices today. "Older and historic buildings comprise more than half of the existing buildings in the United States and the retention and reuse of these buildings preserves the materials, embodied energy, and human capital already expended in their construction. The recycling of buildings is one of the most beneficial `green' practices, and stresses the importance and value of historic preservation in the overall promotion of sustainability." The focus of this project will be Shryock Auditorium, located within Southern Illinois University's campus. The research will establish significance of the 1917 building through analysis of the Architect**, the University, the architecture, and the social framework surrounding its inception. Analysis of the current needs of the Auditorium will be done by working with its users and staff. By comparing the current needs with the original intent of the building, the design solution, will be a compromise of both old and new. * "Sustainable", in the context of this project, refers to the idea of preserving the sense of place within a "community" - in this case the community of SIU, Carbondale, and southern Illinois. ** Placing the building in its historical narrative and studying the architect, James B. Dibelka, a prominent Bohemian Chicagoan and also the State Architect of this time, gives significance to the importance of preserving its spirit within the context. _________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The city of Palmas, Capital of State of Tocantins, is only 25 years old. Before becoming a tourist destination or a gate to access tourist attractions such as the Jalapão region, the capital city that was created just after the splitting of the State of Goiás as established by the Brazilian Constitution of 1988. A planned city, it has its gross domestic product based on the service sector, mainly in the public sector. Palmas has a privileged territorial dimension constituted by large spaces for environmental preservation and good urban areas, such as Girassóis square, Praia Graciosa and Cesamar Park that generate social spaces for leisure and tourism. Places that present a specific way of hospitality characteristics mainly due to the historical process of its construction. Moreover, we note that the territory of the city is not homogeneous in offering hospitality, including tourism. Notions of hospitality and tourism-related territory will be treated in this research in order to respond to the objective of analyzing the meanings of hospitality while actors' behavior, expressed by the city of Palmas (TO) as a tourist destination from core issues and based on historical social movement and the reality of education in relation to the contradictions that constitute it. Based on the theoretical framework (hospitality, tourism and territory) a case study was developed, which allowed gathering detailed information for understanding of hospitality. The competitive advantage used in this research must be understood as a fundamental advantage that the establishments and the touristic sites exhibit regarding its competitors, that can be shown by the superior performance compared to the other cities. It is a key advantage, as it represents the "something more" that show that the city can be distinguished and puts it under the spotlights regarding the other touristic destinations. As a result it was concluded that the hospitality practice in Palmas represent a competitive advantage to improve the tourism in the city.
