_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Introduction – The city of Palmas in the state of Tocantins set up the Mobile Emergency Health Care Service (SAMU) in 2005 in order to provide urgency and emergency service for its population. The service has an information system for the storage of data from calls received by the medical regulation center. Objective – To study the assistance provided by the SAMU, including the socio-demographic profile of the staff and the epidemiological profile of the patients, the flow of occurrences, and identification of response time. Methodology – A transversal descriptive study was carried out with a sample of 59 professionals and 2,400 occurrence reports. Results – The study found that among the surveyed professionals there was a prevalence of males (64.4%); the ages ranged from 26 to 55; 57.6% make use of alcohol and 11.9% use tobacco; most of them did not regard the work as stressful. Of the total number of occurrences, clinical cases (41,6%) nearly equaled the number of those with external causes (42.6%), of which motorcycle accidents represented 48,1%; Men were the most frequently attended by the service and the average age was 35. The regions that had the most occurrences were the South and the North regions and the destination of the majority of the patients was the HGP, with the exception of obstetric and gynecological cases, which were taken to the HRDR. Conclusion – The characterization of the profile of the occurrences may aid health authorities, policymakers, and politicians in discussions and decision making that may contribute to the delivery of quality services following the norms established by the Health Ministry and involving the quality of the health of workers.

Reduplication in old Chinese

Sun, Jingtao 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation aims at constructing a description of reduplication in Old Chinese, developing a generative theory of morpho-phonological interaction to account for the formation of the reduplication patterns, and re-examining general reduplication theories and issues of other linguistic components by drawing lessons from Old Chinese reduplication. The investigation of the source data reveals that Old Chinese reduplication has four basic patterns: progressive reduplication with either "smallness" or "vividness", retrogressive pattern with "repetition", fission reduplication with "specialization", and total reduplication with a vivid impression (a parasitic sense). The formation of the reduplication patterns results from the interaction between morphology and phonology. With motivation from semantics, the monosyllabic base is reduplicated as two identical syllables, which undergo further modification. 1) Since the reduplicative form with "diminutive" or "vividness" is semantically undecomposable, OOP (One Syllable One Meaning Principle) forces the two syllables to sound like one, which is achieved by raising the sonority of the onset of the second syllable. As such, the progressive pattern arises. 2) For the same reason, the reduplicative form with "specialization" has the same shape as the progressive at one stage. Pressure from the system thus compels it to undergo further modification, eventually producing the fission pattern. 3) The reduplicative form with a vivid impression is not under the control of OOP; thus it can keep its two identical syllables intact, yielding total reduplication pattern. 4) Reduplicative verbs are semantically decomposable; thus OOP does not come into effect. That the form is actually modified stems from the pressure of an already-existent total reduplication pattern, while this modification of the first rhyme is determined by quasi-iambic stress. This interaction produces a retrogressive pattern. This study sheds light on reduplication processes in general and other linguistic issues. During reduplication, full reduplication occurs first; then the reduplicant is modified. That reduplication operates on the interface between morphology and phonology is a universal phenomenon, but how this operation proceeds is language-specific. The consistent distinction between Type A syllables and Type B syllables seen in Old Chinese reduplication patterns indicates the unreasonableness of reconstructing a "medial" yod for Old Chinese. / Arts, Faculty of / Asian Studies, Department of / Graduate

Predicting Patriarchy: Using Individual and Contextual Factors to Examine Patriarchal Endorsement in Communities

Crittenden, Courtney A., Wright, Emily M. 01 April 2013 (has links)
In much feminist literature, patriarchy has often been studied as a predictive variable for attitudes toward or acts of violence against women. However, rarely has patriarchy been examined as an outcome across studies. The current study works toward filling this gap by examining several individual-and neighborhood-level factors that might influence patriarchy. Specifically, this research seeks to determine if neighborhood-level attributes related to socioeconomic status, family composition, and demographic information affect patriarchal views after individual-level correlates of patriarchy were controlled. Findings suggest that factors at both the individual- and neighborhood levels, particularly familial characteristics and dynamics, do influence the endorsement of patriarchal views.

Semileptonic B Decays to Light Neutral Hadrons: B to pi0 l nu and B to eta l nu

Cole, Shoshanna Beth January 2007 (has links)
Master of Science / An analysis of B to pi0 l nu and B to eta l nu decays using the neutrino reconstruction technique is presented. The dataset consists of 535 million BB pairs in 492 fb^−1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− collider. The measured B to pi0 l nu and B to eta l nu branching fractions are B(B to pi0 l nu) = (0.68 ± 0.09 ± 0.11 ± 0.04)×10^−4 and B(B to eta l nu) = (0.42 ± 0.13)×10^−4. The errors on the pi0 measurement are statistical, experimental systematic, and due to b to u l nu modelling, respectively; that on the eta is statistical only. The B to pi0 l nu branching fraction is measured in three q^2 bins: q^2 < 8 GeV^2, 8 GeV^2 ≤ q^2 < 16 GeV^2, and 16 GeV^2 ≤ q^2. The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix element |Vub| is extracted from the B to pi0 l nu branching fraction using a Light-Cone Sum Rules form factor extrapolated to the full q^2 range, and is found to be |Vub| = (3.29 ± 0.23 ± 0.27 ± 0.05)×10^−3, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and theoretical, respectively.

These studies find a negative relation between it and the future financial performance measured by return on assets and a positive relation with market performance measured by return to shareholders, even if the expected return to shareholders is adjusted for non-systematic risk measured by Beta. This research attempts to show that book-to-market value can be characterized as a proxy for companies idiosyncratic intangible assets, and these resources provide sustainable financial performance. The sustainability of financial performance may explain this positive relation between book-to-market value and return to shareholders that are found in these studies, as investors would accept a lower risk premium offered by intangible-intensive companies. If we accept market efficiency hypothesis, by which prices capture all publicly or not available information affecting the value of companies, then intangible-intensive firms present lower risk. This research also brings the discussion that if it is the companies idiosyncratic intangible assets that promote sustainable financial performance then a measure of the construct of intangibility has greater explanatory power for the observed financial and market performance. Strategic resource literature proposes Tobin's Q as an intangibility construct metric. This study shows that the use of Tobin's Q allows the construction of a better performance estimator then book-to-market value, thus confirming that it is intangible assets that offers the best explanation for the companies financial and market performance. This study finds a strong positive relation between intangibility and sustainable financial performance and a negative relation with market performance.

Complete and Exact Small Signal Analysis of DC-to-DC Switched Power Converters Under Various Operating Modes and Control Methods

Simmons, Justin French 01 January 2011 (has links)
A method to obtain the exact control-to-output and input-to-output transfer functions for switched DC-to-DC pulse-width modulated power converters is applied to different combinations of operating conditions such as continuous conduction mode (CCM), discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), and discontinuous voltage mode (DVM) and methods of control such as normal voltage mode (NVM), current programming mode (CPM), and V-squared control. The majority of these combinations have not previously had their transfer functions of interest derived to the accuracy provided by the method. The derivation of the method is covered, and the results from its application are verified by simulation. The simulation method is also justied and proposed as an improvement to the methods used by simulation engines for switched mode power supply design such as SIMPLIS.

Predictors of time to return to work following a planned medical event: total knee replacement as an exemplar

Blodgett, Nicole Petsas 01 July 2014 (has links)
Little is known about time to return to work (TRTW) following planned medical events. This study was a secondary analysis (n=94) to determine predictors of time to return to work following a total knee replacement for osteoarthritis. Significant predictors of delayed TRTW following a knee replacement: 1) use of workplace modifications (in 6wks vs 5 wks) and 2) poor physical function (in 7wks vs 6 wks). These findings have large implications for workers undergoing knee replacement, orthopedic clinicians, and occupational health nurses.
