The significance of some insular characteristics in birds

The reported tendency for island birds to possess larger wings and bills than their mainland counterparts, was investigated by a study of the passerine birds of the Tres Marias Islands, Mexico. It was found that several species showed this bill trend, but that a tendency for birds to possess larger wings was less apparent; an unexpected tendency for the tarsus of island birds to be large was also demonstrated. On The other hand, there is no apparent tendency for the body-size of island birds to be larger than that of their mainland counterparts. The bill and tarsus characteristics of the Tres Marias birds are also shown by many other passerine birds in islands situations elsewhere in Mexico and North America. The differences in dimensions between mainland and Tres Marias birds cannot be explained as adaptations to different climatic conditions (Allen’s rule). Observations of feeding behaviour and analysis of gizzard contents of collected specimens reveal that some island species have a diet which is different from that of their mainland counterparts and that their use of perches is different too. This suggests that the bill and tarsus are used differently in the two regions. It is postulated that large bill and tarsus are adaptations to a greater exploitation of the environment. Differences inhabit at between the mainland and islands do not account for differences in feeding behaviour, but the relative paucity of specie on the islands offers and explanation. It suggests that there is some more environment available for exploitation to each of those present on the islands that to those on the mainland, assuming that there are approximately equal resources in the two regions. There is additional indirect evidence to suggest that the absence of several species has important effects upon those present. Island birds tend to be more drab in plumage that mainland birds on the Tres Marias and elsewhere and at least one species on the Tres Marias has reduced vocal repertoire. In view of the value of distinctive plumage and song as specific recognition characteristics the futures displayed by the Tres Marias birds may be attributed to the absence of systematically closely-related species. At least one species nests considerably lower in the vegetation On the Tres Marias Islands than on the mainland, which may be due to the relative absence of predators on the islands. There is evidence to suggest that the ecological conditions which have permitted the evolution of bill and tarsus characteristics in island birds, have permitted the evolution of large body-size in island rodents also. If this is true, then it is possible that the recorded tendency for animals to become larger in the course of evolution is related to an increase in the amount of environment available for exploitation. / Science, Faculty of / Zoology, Department of / Graduate

Determinação das variações das geleiras da Cordilheira Tres Cruces (Bolívia) entre 1975-2004 pela análise de imagens digitais e dados cartográficos

Este estudo levantou, por técnicas de sensoriamento remoto, uma área piloto (cordilheira Tres Cruces, localizada entre 67º22’–67º32’W e 16º47’–16º09’S) da cobertura de gelo boliviana. Foram examinadas as antigas posições frontais de algumas geleiras dessa cordilheira, através da análise de imagens satelitais, dados cartográficos, e pelo cálculo de mudança na espessura do gelo (diferenças de volume e elevação). O monitoramento foi efetuado entre os anos de 1975 e 2004 (29 anos) nas geleiras: Jankho Loma, San Enrique, Laramkkota, Malla Chuma, Campanani, Jacha Pacuni e c5250. No geral, a partir de 1975, as frentes das geleiras diminuíram em todas as direções, as retrações máximas e mínimas das frentes de gelo foram de 437 m (Laramkkota) e 181 m (San Enrique). O recuo médio das 7 geleiras estudadas foi de aproximadamente 12 m a-1 . Nas áreas cobertas por gelo na cordilheira, em média, ocorreu uma redução de 18% em 29 anos, ou seja, aproximadamente - 0,009 km2 a-1. Neste período a geleira c5250 foi a que teve a maior perda relativa (cerca de 50% de sua área). Por outro lado, a geleira Campanani, de maior superfície, foi a que perdeu proporcionalmente menor área (6% do total). A linha de neve foi determinada para o ano de 2004 a 5.300 m de altitude, sendo utilizada para calcular a proporção entre a superfície da área de acumulação e a área total da geleira. Todas geleiras analisadas apresentavam uma proporção da área de acumulação maior do que 60% em 2004. A análise dos modelos digitais de elevação indicou redução geral no volume de gelo durante o período, apresentando uma perda média de aproximadamente 1,55 m equivalente água a-1. A retração das massas glaciais da cordilheira Tres Cruces é consistente com o aquecimento atmosférico regional e com redução generalizada das geleiras nos Trópicos. / This study has surveyed, by remote sensing techniques, a pilot area of the Bolivian Andes ice cover, located at the Tres Cruces cordillera (67º22’–67º32’W e 16º47’–16º09’S). Analyses of satellite imagery, cartographic data and ice thickness changes estimation (differences of volume and elevation) have provided information on past front positions of some glaciers of this cordillera. Monitoring was carried out from 1975 to 2004 (29 years) for the following glaciers: Jankho Loma, San Enrique, Laramkkota, Malla Chuma, Campanani, Jacha Pacuni and c5250, including a total ice covered area of 13.7 km2. Neuartige Lanthanoid-dotierte mikro- und mesoporöse Feststoffe : Charakterisierung von Ion-Wirt-Wechselwirkungen, Speziesverteilung und Lumineszenzeigenschaften mittels zeitaufgelöster Lumineszenzspektroskopie / Novel lanthanide doped micro- and mesoporous solids : characterization of ion-host-interactions, species distribution and luminescence properties using time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy

Poröse Sol-Gel-Materialien finden in vielen Bereichen Anwendung bzw. sind Gegenstand der aktuellen Forschung. Zu diesen Bereichen zählen sowohl klassische Anwendungen, wie z. B. die Verwendung als Katalysator, Molekularsieb oder Trockenmittel, als auch nichtklassische Anwendungen, wie z. B. der Einsatz als Kontrastmittel in der Magnet-Resonanz-Tomographie oder in Form von dünnen Zeolithfilmen als Isolatoren in Mikrochips. Auch für den Einsatz in der Photonik werden poröse Materialien in Betracht gezogen, wie die Entwicklung des Zeolith-Farbstoff-Lasers zeigt. Mikroporöse Zeolithe können generell über einfache Ionenaustauschreaktionen mit Lanthanoidionen in lumineszente Materialien umgewandelt werden. Neben der Erzeugung eines lumineszenten Materials, dessen Lumineszenzeigenschaften charakterisiert werden müssen, bietet die Nutzung von Lanthanoidionen die Möglichkeit diese Ionen als Sonde zur Charakterisierung der Ion-Wirt-Wechselwirkungen zu funktionalisieren, was z. B. in Bezug auf die Anwendung als Katalysator von großer Bedeutung ist. Dabei werden die einzigartigen Lumineszenzeigenschaften der Lanthanoidionen, in diesem Fall von Europium(III) und Terbium(III), genutzt. In dieser Arbeit wurden Lanthanoid-dotierte mikroporöse Zeolithe, mikroporös-mesoporöse Hybridmaterialien und mesoporöse Silikate hinsichtlich ihrer Lumineszenzeigenschaften und ihrer Wechselwirkung des Wirtsmaterials mit den Lanthanoidionen mittels zeitaufgelöster Lumineszenzspektroskopie untersucht. Zeitaufgelöste Emissionsspektren (TRES) liefern dabei sowohl Informationen in der Wellenlängen- als auch in der Zeitdomäne. Erstmalig wurden die TRES mittels einer umfangreichen Auswertemethodik behandelt. Neben der Anpassung des Abklingverhaltens mit einer diskreten Zahl von Exponentialfunktionen, wurden unterstützend auch Abklingzeitverteilungsanalysen durchgeführt. Zeitaufgelöste flächennormierte Emissionsspektren (TRANES), eine Erweiterung der normalen TRES, konnten erstmals zur Bestimmung der Zahl der emittierenden Lanthanoidspezies in porösen Materialien genutzt werden. Durch die Berechnung der Decayassoziierten Spektren (DAS) konnten den Lanthanoidspezies die entsprechenden Lumineszenzspektren zugeordnet werden. Zusätzlich konnte, speziell im Fall der Europium-Lumineszenz, durch Kombination von zeitlicher und spektraler Information das zeitabhängige Asymmetrieverhältnis R und die spektrale Evolution des 5D0-7F0-Übergangs mit der Zeit t untersucht und somit wesentliche Informationen über die Verteilung der Europiumionen im Wirtsmaterial erhalten werden. Über die Abklingzeit und das Asymmetrieverhältnis R konnten Rückschlüsse auf die Zahl der OH-Oszillatoren in der ersten Koordinationssphäre und die Symmetrie der Koordinationsumgebung gezogen werden. Für die mikroporösen und mikroporös-mesoporösen Materialien wurden verschiedene Lanthanoidspezies, im Regelfall zwei, gefunden, welche entsprechend der beschriebenen Methoden charakterisiert wurden. Diese Lanthanoidspezies konnten Positionen in den Materialien zugeordnet werden, die sich im tief Inneren des Porensystems oder auf bzw. nahe der äußeren Oberfläche oder in den Mesoporen befinden. Erstere Spezies ist aufgrund ihrer Position im Material gut vor Feuchtigkeitseinflüssen geschützt, was sich deutlich in entsprechend langen Lumineszenzabklingzeiten äußert. Zusätzlich ist diese Europiumspezies durch unsymmetrische Koordinationsumgebung charakterisiert, was auf einen signifikanten Anteil an Koordination der Lanthanoidionen durch die Sauerstoffatome im Wirtsgitter zurückzuführen ist. Ionen, die sich nahe oder auf der äußeren Oberfläche befinden, sind dagegen für Feuchtigkeit zugänglicher, was in kürzeren Lumineszenzabklingzeiten und einer symmetrischeren Koordinationsumgebung resultiert. Der Anteil von Wassermolekülen in der ersten Koordinationssphäre ist hier deutlich größer, als bei den Ionen, die sich tiefer im Porensystem befinden und entspricht in vielen Fällen der Koordinationszahl eines vollständig hydratisierten Lanthanoidions. Auch der Einfluss von Oberflächenmodifikationen auf die Speziesverteilung und das Verhalten der Materialien gegenüber Feuchtigkeit wurde untersucht. Dabei gelang es den Einfluss der Feuchtigkeit auf die Lumineszenzeigenschaften und die Speziesverteilung durch die Oberflächenmodifikation zu verringern und die Lumineszenzeigenschaften teilweise zu konservieren. Im Fall der mesoporösen Silikamonolithe wurde auch eine heterogene Verteilung der Lanthanoidionen im Porensystem gefunden. Hier wechselwirkt ein Teil der Ionen mit der Porenwand, während sich die restlichen Ionen in der wäßrigen Phase innerhalb des Porensystems aufhalten. Das Aufbringen von Oberflächenmodifikationen führte zu einer Wechselwirkung der Ionen mit diesen Oberflächenmodifikationen, was sich in Abhängigkeit von der Oberflächenbeladung in den enstprechenden Lumineszenzeigenschaften niederschlug. / Porous sol-gel materials are suitable for many applications and subject to ongoing research activities. This includes classical applications, e.g. as catalyst, molecular sieve or drying agent, as well as non-classical applications, e.g. as contrast agent in magnetic resonance tomography or in the form of thin zeolite films as isolators in microchips. The interest in porous materials also covers photonic applications as shown by the development of the zeolite-dye-microlaser. Zeolites, which belong to the subfamily of microporous materials, can be converted into luminescent materials using simple ion-exchange procedures. In addition to the creation of a luminescent material, which luminescence properties have to be characterized, the incorporation of lanthanide ions offers the possibility to use these ions as a luminescent probe for the characterization of the ion-host interactions. This is particularly interesting concerning the application of porous materials as catalysts. Therefor, the unique luminescence properties of the lanthanide ions europium(III) and terbium(III) are used. In this work lanthanide-doped microporous zeolites, microporous-mesoporous hybrid materials and mesoporous silicates were investigeted regarding their luminescence properties and the ion-host-interactions using time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. Thereby, time-resolved emission spectra (TRES) provide information in the wavelength and time domain. For the analysis of the TRES a broad set of analytic methods was applied and thus a corresponding “toolbox“ developed. Fitting of the luminescence decays was performed with a discrete number of exponentials and supported by luminescence decay times distributions. Time-resolved area normalized emission spectra (TRANES), an advancement of TRES, could be used for the determination of the number of emissive lanthanide species in porous materials for the first time. Calculation of the decay-associated spectra (DAS) allowed the correlation of spectral information with luminescence decay times and thus delivered the luminescence spectra of the different europium species. For europium(III) we could use in addition the time-dependent asymmetry ratio and spectral evolution of the 5D0-7F0-transition with time to obtain further information about the distribution of the lanthanide ions in the host material. Luminescence decay times and spectra allowed conclusions on the number of OH-oscillators in and the symmetry of the first coordination sphere. For the microporous and microporous-mesoporous materials were found different lanthanide species, which were characterized by the above mentioned methods. These lanthanide species can be found on different positions in the host material. One position is located deep in the pore system. Here, lanthanide ions are hardly accessible for water and mainly coordinated by framework oxygens. This results in long luminescence decay times and distorted coordination spheres. The second position can be found near or on the outer surface or in the mesopores. Lanthanide ions located here, are easily accessible for water and thus show shorter luminescence decay times and a more symmetrical coordination sphere, which is mostly made up by water molecules. Another investigated aspect was the influence of surface modifications on the luminescence behavior of the lanthanide ions inside the material. Here we could show, that surface modifications hydrophobize the material and thus are able to protect the lanthanide ions from water, which is important for the conservation of the luminescence properties. Concerning the mesoporous silicates, again a heterogeneous distribution of the lanthanide ions in the pore system was found. A part of the lanthanide ions interacts with the pore wall, while the other part is located in the aqueous phase inside the pores. Surface modification led to a interaction of the lanthanide ions with the modification. This was reflected in the luminescence properties depending on the structure of the modification and the surface loading.

Guitarra Olimareña : de lo regional a lo local en la práctica guitarrística de la milonga "A Don José", de Ruben Lena

Magíster en artes con mención en musicología / Este trabajo está dividido en tres capítulos, donde cada uno focaliza sobre distintos componentes que integran la canción. En el primer capítulo se propone un panorama sobre la guitarra popular en el Uruguay a partir de la década de 1960. En el capítulo dos, el tema central es la Milonga Oriental, con una mirada crítica sobre los mapas milongueros estáticos que conforman el área de dispersión del género. En este sentido se proponen otras configuraciones regionales que mantienen la presencia de la milonga, mayoritariamente en el territorio uruguayo, algunas Provincias argentinas, el Estado de Río Grande do Sul (Brasil) y el sur paraguayo. En el último capítulo se analiza un caso de estudio local que enmarca una escena musical de Treinta y Tres, donde el cruce conceptual con marcos teóricos de lo barrial y las relaciones de poder dan paso a una consideración final: la retrospectiva de la canción “A Don José”, vista en el marco local de donde surgió, pero desde la actualidad. Contra todo pronóstico : Una interpretación de Las tres bodas de Manolita de Almudena Grandes desde la teoría de la resiliencia

Este trabajo analizará a la protagonista de la novela Las tres bodas de Manolita, de laescritora española Almudena Grandes, desde el punto de vista de la teoría psicológica de laresiliencia. Pretendemos comprender qué tipo de mecanismos y factores hacen que se puedaconsiderar a Manolita un personaje resiliente. Al tratarse de una interpretación del texto deGrandes se abordará el estudio siguiendo el método hermenéutico. Se basará el análisisindividual del personaje en los estudios, principalmente de observación, llevados a cabo por elpsicólogo británico Michael Rutter; y el análisis desde el punto de vista social o colectivo enlos estudios realizados por el psicólogo español Juan de Dios Uriarte. Las conclusiones denuestra investigación nos llevarán a confirmar que, siguiendo la teoría que se expone,Manolita presenta las características y actitudes individuales necesarias, además de una redsocial de apoyo, para superar los reveses tan graves que le acontecen durante la novela.

Tecnicas de sensoriamento remoto e geoprocessamento aplicadas ao mapeamento geologico e geotecnico no municipio de Tres Cachoeiras, litoral norte do Rio Grande do Sul

As técnicas de sensoriarnento remoto e geoprocessamento são fundamentais para processamento e integração de dados de mapeamento geológico/geotécnico, principalmente estudos de gerenciamento e planejamento. A área estudada compreende o município de Três Cachoeiras. Litoral Norte do Rio Grande do Sul o qual inclui-se na "Reserva da Biosfera da Mata Atlântica". O município tem st: deparado com problemas de localização de sitios adequados à disposição final dos resíduos sólidos. bem como o assentamento de loteamentos residenciais e industriais, localização de jazidas de extração de material para construção, fontes de abastecimento de água e necessidade de criação de áreas de preservação ambiental. O objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir mapeamentos da área em questão, através da pesquisa geológico-geotécnica desenvolvida com emprego de imagens de satélite e fotografias aéreas, em que as informações foram cruzadas no SIG. Baseado nisto, investigaram-se os aspectos acima mencionados. a partir de uma contribuição geológico/geotécnica ao município, incluindo-se levantamento de campo, fotointerpretação, processamento e classificação de imagens do município de Três Cachoeiras, sendo os dados integrados num sistema de geoprocessamento. Utilizando-se cartas planialtimétricas, fotografias aéreas e imagem de satélite LANDSAT TM5. foram criados planos de informação como o limite da área estudada, a estrutura viária municipal, a delimitação de reservas ecológicas baseadas na legislação ambiental vigente e, por meio do modelo numérico do terreno, a carta de declividade. A fotointerpretação gerou planos de rede de drenagem, litológica. morfoestruturas e formações superficiais. Os dados de campo. sobrepostos às litológicas obtidas por fotointerpretação, produziram a carta litológica. No tratamento das imagem, foram gerados produtos com contraste, operações entre bandas, filtragens e análise de componentes principais, os quais contribuíram parira classificação da imagem e resultando nos planos de rochas/solos e cobertura/uso do solo (carta de uso atual do solo). O cruzamento destas informações permitiu a obtenção da carta de formações superficiais, lidrogeológica que, juntamente com as cartas litológica, declividades e uso atual do solo distribuíram os atributos do meio físico em planos elaborados por novos cruzamentos, que satisfazem o objetivo do estudo, sendo estes planos o produto final, ou seja, cartas de recomendação: a extração de materiais para construção civil; a implantação de obras de infraestrutura; a disposição de resíduos sólidos e loteamentos; geotécnica à agricultura; à implantação de áreas destinadas à preservação ambienta1 e recuperação. / Remote sensing and GIS techniques are basic for proccesing and integration in geological/geotechnical mapping mainly in management and plannig studies. The surveyerd areas was Três Cachoeiras County, north coast of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, whch is included in "Mata AtLântica Biosphere Reserve". This investgation results in thermatic maps, such as declivity, lithology, hidrogeology, surface formations and land use. Such maps were crossed and superposed. the mentioned county has problems in terms of waste sites as well as suply and environmental preservation sites. Such aspects were sunrveved from a geological/geotechnical point of view, that includes integrationby geological/geotechnical mapping image processing and classification and data integration by geoprocessing techniques. Bv means topogaphic maps, aeial photographies anrl TM LANDSAT 5 images layers were developed such as terrain numerical model, declivity map, county boundaries, ecological reserves limits based on current environmental laws and county road system. The photointerpretation generated drainage network, lithologies, morphostructures and surface formation layers. Fieldwork data was superposed on photolithology to generate a lithological map. Image processing used techniques such as enhancement, stretching, filtering and principal components analysis wich contribute to classify the image. As results, the lithology/soil and cover/land use were obtained, generated a current land use map. Surface formations map was obtained by crossing aerial surface formations data and image lithology/sois data. Environmental physics atributes were çlustered by crossing and distribuited in recomendation maps containing building material extraction, waste sites and human/industry settlement, building construction works, agriculture and environmental presevation and reclamation areas.
