Palmoljeindustrin i medierna : En kvalitativ studie / Palm oil industry in the media : A qualitative content analysis

Problem formulation There are many studies on how the media produces environmental changes, but environmental changes are a large abstract topic. It includes many smaller parts of more concrete contexts. One very big problem that occurs is that human footprints end up in poorer countries, where natural resources are converted into goods that are consumed by us in the western world. Tropical forests in Borneo, Malaysia and Indonesia are devastated in favor of plantations of oil palm trees, which are then used in a variety of commodities worldwide. In this paper we want to highlight the subject of palm oil. We want to make people more aware of how the palm oil industry is conducted and where the newspapers put their focus. Aim The study aims to investigate whether Expressen, the Sveriges Natur, the Tidningen Syre, Dalarnas Tidningar and TT Nyhetsbyrån and how they are presented to citizens in those publications. Method and material A quantitative content analysis has been carried out consisting of a total of 14 analysis objects from Expressen, Sveriges Natur, Tidningen Syre, Dalarnas Tidningar and TT Nyhetsbyrån. Main results We can conclude that the topic of palm oil and the palm oil industry in the articles is an infected debate in which many different aspects are involved. Conflicts are the focus of reporting, closely followed by human responsibility for the enviroment. The categories have given us an overview of how many different aspects are included in the subject and how many concerns there are in connection with the palm oil industry.

Scheduling and Optimisation of Heterogeneous Time/Event-Triggered Distributed Embedded Systems

<p>Day by day, we are witnessing a considerable increase in number and range of applications which entail the use of embedded computer systems. This increase is closely followed by the growth in complexity of applications controlled by embedded systems, often involving strict timing requirements, like in the case of safety-critical applications. Efficient design of such complex systems requires powerful and accurate tools that support the designer from the early phases of the design process.</p><p>This thesis focuses on the study of real-time distributed embedded systems and, in particular, we concentrate on a certain aspect of their real-time behavior and implementation: the time-triggered (TT) and event-triggered (ET) nature of the applications and of the communication protocols. Over the years, TT and ET systems have been usually considered independently, assuming that an application was entirely ET or TT. However, nowadays, the growing complexity of current applications has generated the need for intermixing TT and ET functionality. Such a development has led us to the identification of several interesting problems that are approached in this thesis. First, we focus on the elaboration of a holistic schedulability analysis for heterogeneous TT/ET task sets which interact according to a communication protocol based on both static and dynamic messages. Second, we use the holistic schedulability analysis in order to guide decisions during the design process. We propose a design optimisation heuristic that partitions the task-set and the messages into the TT and ET domains, maps and schedules the partitioned functionality, and optimises the communication protocol parameters. Material Characterization Of The Late 12th-13th Century Byzantine Ceramics From Kusadasi Kadikalesi/anaia

This study investigates the petrographical and chemical characteristics of a group of Zeuxippus Ware Related Ceramics dating to the late 12th-13th centuries from Kusadasi Kadikalesi/Anaia. Kadikalesi was a Byzantine fortress at the coast of Aegean Sea. It was also a significant commercial port and an episcopacy center during the 13th century. In this study, visual classifications of the ceramics were carried out based on their stylistic properties. Then, ceramic samples were investigated by several methods including mineralogical, micromorphological, chemical (SEM-EDX, ICP-OES, ICP-MS) and Raman Spectrometry techniques and further evaluated by statistical analyses. Bodies are found to be rich in SiO2 and Al2O3 while relatively high amounts of Fe2O3 measured, agree well with their reddish bodies. These bodies mostly display micaceous matrix with a relatively low degree of vitrification. Cluster analysis performed among thirty selected samples, points out the presence of two main groups. Observed slip layers are also found to be rich in SiO2 and Al2O3 contents and exhibit various types of crystalline and/or vitreous matrix. Glazes are found to be high lead glazes processed at or below. The glazes are found to be high lead glazes processed at or below 700&deg / C as confirmed by SEM-EDX and Raman spectrometry investigations. Iron compounds are the major coloring agents for most of the glazes analyzed regardless of their observed colors. Presence of Raman peaks in some yellow glazes which may be assigned to a solid solution of Naples yellow type of pigment is significant since its use in the Byzantine period as a glaze pigment has been scarcely reported before.

Depuis sa découverte en 1995 à Fermilab, le quark Top fait l'objet d'une grande attention. Il complète la troisième famille de quarks du Modèle Standard de la physique des particules, et la mesure de ses propriétés contraint fortement ce modèle. Il constitue également une voie d'accès privilégiée à la nouvelle physique attendue à une énergie de l'ordre du TeV. Ce travail de thèse, réalisé auprès du détecteur ATLAS du LHC, présente les méthodes mises en œuvre afin de mesurer précisément la masse du quark Top dans le canal lepton+jets. Différentes stratégies d'analyse sont présentées en fonction des performances du détecteur, notamment sa capacité d'identification des jets beaux. La mesure précise de la masse du Top passe par une connaissance approfondie de l'échelle d'énergie des jets. Ce document propose une stratégie d'étalonnage des jets légers qui s'appuie sur la contrainte de la masse du boson W, et montre qu'une précision de l'ordre du GeV/c² sur la mesure de la masse du Top est tout à fait possible. Une évaluation du potentiel de découverte de résonances ttbar, prévues dans le cadre de modèles au-delà du Modèle Standard, est également menée.

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / L-3 Communications Telemetry & Instrumentation (L-3 T&I) has developed an advanced IBM PC-AT Telemetry, Tracking, and Commanding (TT&C) SATCOM system based on the utilization of Field Programmable Gate Array / Digital Signal Processing (FPGA/DSP) microprocessors. This system includes up-link, down-link, and range processing sections. Physically, the system consists of one IF Transceiver and two or more FPGA/DSP microprocessor boards called Advanced Processing Microprocessors (APMs). The form factor of these PWBs is compliant with full length, full height IBM PC PCI bus cards. This paper describes the features and functionality of an advanced Telemetry, Tracking, and Commanding Processing System (TT&CPS) based on the implementation of FPGA and DSP microprocessors. The high-level functional attributes of the TT&CPS are depicted in Figure 1. There are four main functional blocks: the IF Transceiver, the Down-Link Processing Section, the Up-Link Processing Section, and the Range Processor. The analog/IF circuitry in the IF Transceiver card interfaces between the 68–72 MHz (70 MHz, nominal) IF I/O signals and the Up-Link and Down-Link Processing Section's DSP equipment. The down-link portion of the IF Transceiver card has two user-selected input ports. From the selected input, the signal is processed through selectable bandwidth limiting, gain control, Doppler correction (optional), quadrature down-conversion to zero hertz (baseband), selectable baseband filtering, and precision Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion. The up-link portion of the IF Transceiver card takes I/Q digital data from the APM performing the up-link processing functions. This baseband I/Q digital data is Digital-to-Analog (D/A) converted, filtered, quadrature up-converted to 68–72 MHz, up-link Doppler corrected (optional), output level detected and level controlled, and sent to a two-position output selector switch. The down-link portion of the TT&CPS provides main carrier linear PM or BPSK or QPSK demodulation and can also, in composite linear PM demodulation mode, receive and demodulate FSK and/or BPSK subcarriers and ranging signals. The demodulators use symbol timing loops and bit decision circuits (matched filters) to perform the bit synchronization function. Several decoding algorithms, including differential, de-interleaving, Viterbi, and Reed-Solomon, are available for the down-link telemetry. Command format checking and CRC status is also available on FSK-demodulated data. Direct carrier BPSK/QPSK demodulation has decoding and frame synchronization capabilities. Because of the modular construction of the firmware and the use of FPGAs and DSPs, the system can be loaded with only the functions in use, lowering initial setup time while increasing overall system capability. To support a particular function, the card is downloaded with an “image,” which programs the FPGAs and DSPs at initialization. The user can change configurations by simply downloading a new set of instructions to the FPGA/DSP on the fly to keep the ground station running with minimal downtime. The flexibility of the design minimizes spare board costs, while achieving greater programmability at the end-user location.

The open bus technology, and Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Hardware and Software components, provides an opportunity to build a common IF and baseband systems that will support many satellites with different frequencies and protocols. However, the high frequency front end components of the ground station such as antenna or HPA can not be common due to different gain and polarization requirements of the various communication bands and frequencies. The system architecture presented in this paper offers such system that is interoperable and reconfigurable in near real-time to support multiple frequency and multiple communication protocols.

Barriers And Opportunities For Integrating Sustainable Product Design Into Ankara Small And Medium-sized Furniture Enterprises

The increasing impact of mass production and consumption behaviours have made sustainable product design an important issue in design literature in the last two decades. Studies in the early period focussed on research projects carried out in collaboration with multinational large-sized enterprises, owing to pressures from non-governmental organizations. However, recent studies about sustainable development have pointed out that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) rather than multinationals have a greater share of manufacturing and employment in both industrialized and industrializing countries. Unfortunately, in spite of the important role of SMEs, there is inadequate data and literature relating sustainable design practices to these firms. A lack of information and collaboration, caused partially by communication problems, has resulted in an absence of proper sustainable product design tools for these companies. Furniture enterprises in Ankara are the focus of this study because of the impact of product design in market possibilities and the spread of employment of product designers in the sector. Attitudes of staff and consultants of furniture SMEs regarding barriers and opportunities of sustainable product design are explored, and contrasted with overlapping points of existing product development methods and strategies in the literature. This work is intended to contribute to improved understanding and application of sustainable product design among furniture sector SMEs. To this end, interviews were conducted with 16 furniture manufacturing enterprises from the furniture industry, based in Ankara region and 5 freelance furniture designers cooperating with these enterprises. According to the results of the study, furniture sector SMEs are interested more in economic opportunities of sustainable product design rather than environmental and social aspects. Furthermore, a lack of information about environmental issues is observed in micro and small-sized enterprises / to overcome this situation, it is recommended that training sessions are organized to bring together researchers and practitioners.
