Ellsäter, Åsa January 2013 (has links)

Screen printable sacrificial and structural pastes and processes for textile printing

Wei, Yang January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents a new approach for fabricating free standing structures on flexible substrates using the screen printing technique. The research addresses electronic textile applications and is intended to provide a new method for realising sensors and complex structures on fabrics. Conventional smart fabric fabrication methods, such as weaving and knitting, are only able to achieve planar structures with limited functionality. Packaged discrete sensors can also be attached directly to fabrics but this approach is unreliable and unsuitable for mass production. The reported materials and the fabrication processes enable free standing structures to be formed by printing functional layers directly on top of the fabric. This reduces the fabrication complexity and increases wearer comfort and the flexibility of the fabric. This research details an investigation into sacrificial materials suitable for use on fabrics. A plastic crystalline material (Trimetlylolethane (TME)) was identified as an appropriate sacrificial material because it sublimates which reduces the chance of stiction occurring. A screen printable TME paste has been achieved by dissolving TME powder in a solvent mixture of cyclohexanol (CH) and propylene glycol (PG). The TME sacrificial paste can be cured at 85 oC for 5 minutes providing a solid foundation for subsequent printed layers. This sacrificial layer can be removed in 30 minutes at 150 oC leaving no residue. EFV4/4965 UV curable dielectric material was identified as an appropriate structural material for use with TME. The feasibility of the sacrificial and structural materials has been demonstrated by the fabrication of free standing cantilevers and microfluidic pumps on fabrics and flexible plastic films. Printed cantilevers, with capacitive and piezoelectric sensing mechanisms, have been demonstrated as human motion sensors. A printed microfluidic pump with a maximum pumping rate of 68 μL/min at 3 kHz has also been demonstrated. Both the cantilever and micropump have been demonstrated, for the first time, on fabrics and polyimide substrates, respectively.

Cloth in action : the transformative power of cloth in communites

Barber, Claire January 2015 (has links)
The work submitted for the PhD by Publication is evidence of my investigation into the significance of textiles as an aesthetic experience within a socially engaged form of material practice, some of which involves other people. Social engagement has been an active and deliberate agent in the aesthetic transformation of functional material objects in two of my publications called The Sleeping Bag Project and You Are the Journey. A third publication is a co-edited book called Outside: Activating Cloth to Enhance the Way We Live. A range of essays by artists, curators and writers discloses previously unwritten commentaries on community initiatives that probe a range of empathetic modes of investigation that explore meaningful spaces for participation. I have come to recognise that a proactive attitude towards collaboration is evident in all three publications. It is exemplified by my approach to co-orchestrating the Outside book and by an eagerness to work with others to advance the concept of the transformative power of cloth within the live arena for socially engaged textile practices today. The relations between an aesthetic transformation and socially engaged practice was implicit in Rozsika Parker’s seminal text The Subversive Stitch first published in 1984 providing an analysis of textiles within social history. At the beginning of work on this PhD my relationship with the book was complex and full of tensions. My perceptions of Parker’s work changed as I discovered at the very end of my thesis connections between her work and mine that enable a deeper understanding of the need in my socially engaged textile practice today for the kind of aesthetics she describes historically as arising from social constraint. Consequently The Subversive Stitch has now re-appeared with value as a touchstone for my work in a contemporary context. The thesis then discusses examples of the outcomes of practices by other artists and considers the attention given to visual aesthetics within socially engaged practices. Ideas are developed to suggest how the aesthetic dimension of textiles may enhance principles of communal giving as an innovative strategy stretching beyond the coalition government’s Big Society agenda presented in 2010. Examples from investigations of textiles in museum archives including embroideries created by internees within Second World War prisoner-ofwar camps in the Far East are also examined. The aesthetic dimension of the embroideries carries significance through the vulnerable context in which they were created, as a potent series of statements involving cloth in action. In contemporary Britain, I have shown how such everyday objects as sleeping bags and travel tickets can capture the imagination by creating a connection with participants, when they may not have been consciously seeking an insight separate from the functionality of these objects. Nevertheless, an aesthetic gesture is surreptitiously tucked away. This has created a hybrid form of social engagement that can move fluidly between private and public spaces. The social engagement also involves processes of interaction and exchange with the object in the presentation of an active relationship with the object that is both seen and unseen.

Verstärkung der Wirkung von TTFields auf Glioblastomzellen durch Inhibition des mitotischen Spindelkontrollpunktes / Augmentation of the effects of TTFields on glioblastoma cells by mitotic checkpoint inhibition

Frömbling, Greta Eliza January 2020 (has links) (PDF)
TTFields are -in addition to the standard therapy- approved for GBM therapy. TTFields are alternating electric fields at a low intensity, which cause disruption of the mitotic spindle fibers. Whether spindle fibers are properly attached to the kinetochores is surveilled by the SAC. An inhibition of the kinase MPS1, a key component of the SAC, in combination with Vincristine treatment, results in a synergistic effect on GBM growth in vitro an in vivo (Tannous, Kerami et al. 2013). We hypothesized that a combination of inhibition of SAC in combination with TTFields increases TTFields efficacy. Cells of the cell lines U87 and GaMG were treated either with TTFields alone, the inhibitor MPS1-IN-3 alone or in combination of both. After 72h cells were counted, an analysis of the cell cycle was performed and apoptotic cells were detected by using a TUNEL-Assay. The combined treatment of TTFields and inhibition of SAC led to a significant decrease of cells (U87: -54.3% vs. TTFields, p=0.0046; -52.9% vs. MPS1- IN-3, p=0.0026; GaMG: -74.3% vs. TTFields, p=0.0373; -84% vs. MPS1-IN-3, p<0.00001). U87 cells proliferated only by 28.1% compared to the cells seeded at the beginning, while cells of the GaMG cell line diminished by 62% compared to the number of cells seeded (TTFields: 179.1%; MPS1-IN-3: 168.3%). The cell cycle analysis showed -among other effects- a reduction of the cells in phase G1 (U87: - 59.9% vs. TTFields, p=0.0007; -42.1% vs. IN-3, p=0.0426; GaMG: -45.1% vs. TTFields, p=0.0276; -51.6% vs. IN-3, p=0.0020), and an increase of dead cells (U87: 2.9x vs. TTFields, p=0.0022; 2.2x vs. IN-3, p=0.0046; GaMG: 5.6x vs. TTFields, p=0.0078; 7.8x vs. IN-3, p=0.0005). Those dead cells were identified by the TUNEL- Assay as cells, which had undergone apoptosis (U87: 5.4x vs. TTFields, p=0.0489; 6.2x vs. IN-3, p=0.0278; GaMG: 8.9x vs. IN-3, p=0.0110). These results strengthen the hypothesis that TTFields’ efficacy is increased by a combined treatment with an inhibition of the SAC and provide a basis for further research to improve GBM therapy.

Al-sumasum, Rawia, Faías Ponce, Lara January 2016 (has links)
In today’s situation new methods are constantly evolving in the construction industry where the sustainability of a construction is of utmost importance. Prefabricated concrete is a type material that is highly durable in terms of long life without producing damaging effects. As a result, the material has been used increasingly in the manufacture of construction. Construction industry is continuously developing, which means new ways to construct buildings. Within construction, usage of prefabricated concrete is a method that has become increasingly successful. With this method, the construction period is shortened considerably and the construction process will be more beneficial for the environment and the various safety aspects. This master thesis was written in cooperation with AB Strängbetong, is one of the largest companies in Sweden that uses prefabricated elements. The company has a concept called TempoDeck and is currently building a parking garage in Ullared, with the life with a life expectancy of 50 years, that is life class L50. The objective of the study was to check whether the construction work fulfilled the requirements of the standards. In addition, the purpose was also to investigate the possibility of a different type of facade design by reducing the height of the joists and beams. The thesis includes a literature review, a case study, an archive analysis as well as calculations with the Norwegian program E – bjelke. A guidance from AB Strängbetong has also been used. The results showed that the existing structure fulfilled the life class L50 according to the requirements. In addition, the results showed that it was aesthetically possible to modify the car park, to make it more appealing. However, it would be more profitable to keep the design as it is to the future constructions.

CCSDS SPACE LINK EXTENSION (SLE) SERVICES -- OVERVIEW AND PROGRESS REPORT

Brosi, Fred 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / CCSDS Space Link Extension (SLE) Services enable the ground segment assets of space agencies to interoperate, allowing for ground stations and space data users to interact without the need for ad hoc, complicated gateways designed specifically for each new mission. Their goal is to reduce the development, management, and operational costs of providing cross support between space organizations for exchange of tracking, telemetry, and command (TT&C) data. SLE services are actively supporting over a dozen spacecraft, with many more planned over the next few years. This paper first presents an overview of the underlying SLE architecture, as defined in the SLE Reference Model. The SLE data transfer services, which move data between mission facilities and ground stations are defined, along with the management services that enable missions to make requests for ground station services. Next, up-to-date status of the testing, prototyping, and implementation of SLE services over the past few years is presented, as well as plans for adoption of SLE services by a number of space networks and space mission organizations. Finally, efforts to adapt SLE services to support legacy missions are briefly described.

CCSDS SPACE LINK EXTENSION SERVICE MANAGEMENT STANDARDS AND PROTOTYPING ACTIVITIES

Pietras, John 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) is developing standards for the interface through which spaceflight mission managers request tracking, telemetry, and command (TT&C) and Space Link Extension (SLE) services from TT&C ground stations and networks. The standards are intended for use not just by the spaceflight projects and networks operated by the CCSDS member agencies, but also by commercial networks and networks operated by other governmental agencies. As part of the process of developing the standards, several prototypes are under development. This paper presents a summary status of both the emerging service request standards and the prototypes that implement them.

ACHIEVING DATA TRANSFER AND SERVICE MANAGEMENT INTEROPERABILITY IN SATELLITE CONTROL NETWORKS

Sunshine, Carl, Williams, Lance 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / A critical area for achieving interoperability between satellite control networks is the means chosen to interconnect Satellite Operations Centers and remote antenna systems. The CCSDS Space Link Extension (SLE) services are good candidates for this purpose, but national security space activities have demanding requirements for accuracy of data transfer, controlled delay, and security, which may not be fully achievable with the existing recommendations. The US Air Force developed a test bed to evaluate the SLE protocols during live satellite contacts, for both data transfer and management functions such as scheduling, configuring ground resources, and status reporting. Performance was generally satisfactory, but several extensions were found to be necessary. The SLE services provide a promising basis for use in ground stations to support both legacy Air Force interfaces and newer standards based satellite control services.
