This final thesis represents a complete guide to making didactic aids which can be used in teaching Biology in primary and secondary schools. It completes my bachelor thesis on the topic of the Taxidermy of selected species of birds with detailed photographs of individual steps made throughout the creation process of a dermoplastic mount. It also compares the creation of bird mounts to those of mammal mounts, and it deals with making skeletons of vertebrates. This final thesis acquaints the reader with the taxidermic species, and includes research of foreign literature focussing on interesting facts about mounts. The final output of this thesis is a series of mounts and assembled skeletons of different species of vertebrates, which can all be used as didactic aids at the Department of Biology and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Education, Charles University. Santa Catarina / A questão ambiental é um dos temas de maior relevância da atualidade, e a conservação da biodiversidade encontra-se extremamente alinhada à esta realidade. Entretanto, para que os ecossistemas sejam preservados, faz-se necessário o desenvolvimento de estratégias de sensibilização dos indivíduos, já que é a ação antrópica que origina seus principais impactos. Desta forma, este trabalho tem por objetivo relatar uma proposta prática de conservação da biodiversidade através da educação ambiental que utiliza animais silvestres taxidermizados, realizada na Escola Educacional Técnica – EDUTEC/SATC, em Criciúma, sul de Santa Catarina. Esta ideia foi iniciada por intermédio da oferta de uma oficina científica que desenvolve a técnica de taxidermia (manutenção da epiderme de vertebrados de acordo com as etapas: coleta, limpeza, retirada das vísceras, tratamento químico com bórax/alúmen e/ou formol, secagem e finalização artística) e que utiliza seu acervo em exposições monitoradas, oportunizando conhecimentos ecológicos referentes aos exemplares associados com elementos socioeconômicos e político-culturais. Neste sentido, a oficina de taxidermia confeccionou 34 espécimes de 26 espécies, que foram expostos em 08 eventos e obtendo 11 trabalhos publicados. Contudo, a oficina de taxidermia concretizou relevante coleção zoológica, que possibilitou a construção e a disseminação de saberes e práticas em prol da conservação da biodiversidade e da sustentabilidade. / The environment issue is one of the most important matters nowadays, and the conservation of the biodiversity is totally in consonance with this reality. However, for the ecosystems to be preserved it is necessary to develop strategies that sensitize individuals as it is the anthropic action that causes the main impacts. Thus, this work has the aim to propose a biodiversity conservation practice through environmental education that uses wild animals that have been through taxidermy process which is performed at “Escola Educacional Técnica” – EDUTEC/SATC, in Criciúma, South of Santa Catarina. This idea started through the scientific workshop that develops the taxidermy technique (the skin maintenance of vertebrate animals according to the following steps: collecting, cleaning, removing the entrails, chemical treatment with borax/alum and/or formaldehyde, dryness and final embellishment). They use the collection in monitored exhibitions and provide ecological knowledge of the samples associated with socio-economic and politic-cultural elements. Therefore, the taxidermy workshop has made 34 samples from 26 specimen, that were exposed in 08 events and getting 11 publications. However, the taxidermy workshop made a relevant zoological collection that has provided the construction and the expansion of knowledge and practices because of the need to preserve the biodiversity and for the sustainability.

A critical assessment of the dendrochirotid subfamilies, sclerodactylinae and thyoninae, with the taxonomic management of the "supergenus" thyone (echinodermata : holothuroidea)Arumugam, Preyan. 10 October 2013 (has links)
The key character separating the dendrochirotid families Sclerodactylidae (sensu
Pawson & Fell, 1965) and the Phyllophoridae (sensu Pawson & Fell, 1965), i.e. entire
or undivided radial processes to the calcareous ring in the former and sub-divided
processes in the latter, is unjustified since most sclerodactylid species also have subdivided
processes. It is here assumed that the basis of elevating the subfamily
Sclerodactylinae Panning to family level was established on a misinterpretation or
mistranslation of the original diagnosis of this subfamily or a lapsus calumni meaning
“plates” instead of “processes”. Panning (1949) categorically states that the processes in
the Sclerodactylinae are composed of 3–4 large pieces of calcite and only as an
exception they are unbroken. Since Pawson & Fell gave no other distinction between
the Sclerodactylidae and the Phyllophoridae, the former is here considered an invalid
taxon and its three current subfamilies (Sclerodactylinae, Sclerothyoninae Thandar and
Cladolabinae Heding & Panning) are re-assigned to the Phyllophoridae. This family
now includes six subfamilies: Cladolabinae, Phyllophorinae Östergren,
Sclerodactylinae, Sclerothyoninae, Semperiellinae Heding & Panning and Thyoninae
Panning. The diagnosis of the Sclerodactylinae, restricted by Thandar (1989), is now
modified to include also those forms whose radial and interradial plates may be slightly
sub-divided but still form a short tube. Of the eleven genera placed within this
subfamily subsequent to its erection, only ten of these remain. Neothyone Deichmann is
a preoccupied name for which Lisacucumis is here proposed as a replacement.
Thandar’s (1989) diagnosis of the Thyoninae is here accepted, however, the genus
Thorsonia Heding is transferred to the Sclerodactylinae. Of the 66 nominal species
which currently stand in the “supergenus” Thyone Jaeger, 10 are transferred to
Havelockia Pearson within the Sclerodactylinae, while one species is regarded as a
synonym of H. herdmani Pearson. In addition, six species are transferred to Stolus
Selenka within the Thyoninae. Finally, three species are transferred to Sclerothyoninae,
two within Sclerothyone Thandar and one within Temparena Thandar. Two species
show an uncertain affinity to Thyone and are temporally removed from the genus.
Furthermore, two species currently classified within Havelockia are transferred to
Thyone. The now remaining 46 species are separated into seven groups based on the
composition of their introvert deposits: tables only (8 spp.), rosettes only (5 spp.), tables
and rosettes (21 spp.), tables and plates/?reduced tables (2 spp.), rosettes and
plates/?reduced tables (3 spp.), plates only (2 spp.), or introvert deposits absent or
unknown (5 spp.). Regrettably, no other character could be used in conjunction with the
above to suggest at least sub-generic levels. Within the genus Havelockia, Cucumaria
redimita Sluiter indicates an affinity with Pentamera Ayres. It is here transferred to this
genus within the Thyoninae. Havelockia, now containing 17 species, is also revised.
Keys, diagnoses and figures are provided for all nominal species now included in

01 Abstract Diploma thesis deals with taxidermy techniques of birds and small mammals leading to the production of own taxidermal mounts, which can be afterwards used as suitable didactical tools in the education of biology. Thus the thesis is presenting a comprehensive guide for creation of taxidermal mounts. At the same time, all the the stated procedures are applied at couple of species used for taxidermical purposes. Apart from the techniques itself which are described in methodological part, the thesis is enriched with the description of individual groups and therefore, creates theoretical introduction about the species. The thesis also depicts the production of all described taxidermal mounts. Results of this thesis are in total 8 taxidermal mounts (3 birds and 5 mammals), additionally also osteological material in the form of skeleton of Apodemus sylvaticus and skulls of 3 described small mammals. All the stated taxidermal mounts will serve as didactical tools for needs of Department of Biology and Environmental Studies at Faculty of Education in Prague. Film and the production of knowledge at the Manchester Museum : a practice-based studyEverest, Sophie January 2018 (has links)
Non-fiction film shares a long and relatively uncharted history with the museum. Today, filmmaking is a widespread yet critically neglected area of modern museological practice. This practice-based PhD situates itself within these critical gaps to examine the knowledge producing potential of film archives and film practice at the Manchester Museum. Its primary historical sources are a group of taxidermy objects at the Manchester Museum, an archive of 16mm acetate films at the North West Film Archive and a collection of travel journals at Cheshire Archives and Local Studies. These diverse collections were generated by Maurice Egerton, the 4th Baron of Tatton in Cheshire during his travels in Africa in the first decades of the twentieth century. This thesis brings all three together for the first time since their moment of production. These collections recur throughout the thesis as I ask how film archives can complicate and enrich our understanding of collections and how filmmaking practice might continue to bring new types of knowledge into the museum and archive. Two research films are submitted with and discussed within the thesis. The first, 'Living Worlds at the Manchester Museum', adapts observational methods from visual anthropology to record objects and staff during the re-display of the mammal gallery at the Manchester Museum in 2011. The second, 'Articulating Archives' is the result of a creative collaboration in 2014 with Year 8 secondary school students and the institutions and archives named above. Within the production and analyses of these films I draw on diverse critical sources to suggest that film can illuminate properties of materiality, embodied knowledge and performed engagement that textual accounts fall short of capturing.

Previous issue date: 2011-04-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The main purpose of this paper was to draw a map of the objects which make up the Escola Apostólica Sagrado Coração de Jesus - EASCJ, elementary school´s cultural groundwork, stressing the collection of Museu Irmão Luiz Gartner MILG located Seminário Sagrado Coração de Jesus em Corupá/SC Brazil. The 1932 to 1953 period has been analyzed, since the school´s foundation, which holds the museum, to its transferring. This paper highlights two zoological collections, which make up part of it. The taxidermy of birds and mammals. The data have been collected from the congregation´s documentation, identification tags from the animals, from the images Arquivo Provincial Apdre Lux - Appal and the seminary, interviews with priests and former pupils of EASCJ. The natural sciense museums were inaugurated in Brazil form XIX century and have rerformed an important role in the propagation of science. We specifically consider Museu Irmão Luiz Gartner, the information shows a significant number os birds and mammals, some of them are endangered. Nowadays the collection is made up of 539 samples. Regarding the mammals collection which is made up of 198 samples. This paper also shows a whole of information of different scholar material, such as furniture, shoe´s utensilis, building Groundwork, which might be used for further researches who wihsed to investigate the same theme / O presente trabalho objetivou construir um mapa dos objetos que compõem a base da cultura material da escola primária da Escola Apostólica Sagrado Coração de Jesus - EASCJ, com ênfase no acervo do Museu Irmão Luiz Gartner - MILG -, localizado no Seminário Sagrado Coração de Jesus em Corupá/SC. O período analisado vai de 1932 a 1953, abrangendo desde a fundação da escola que abriga o museu até a sua transferência, quando o MILG passa a funcionar em seu novo e ampliado espaço museológico, onde permanece até os dias de hoje. O trabalho estuda e dá destaque a duas coleções zoológicas que fazem parte do acervo: a de aves e a de mamíferos taxidermizados. Os dados foram coletados em documentos da Congregação Sagrado Coração de Jesus e da instituição que abriga o museu. Utilizaram-se, entre outros documentos, fichas de identificação dos animais taxidermizados, banco de imagens do Arquivo Provincial Padre Lux - Appal - e do Seminário, entrevistas com padres e ex-alunos da EASCJ. Os museus de ciências naturais foram inaugurados no Brasil a partir do século XIX e desempenharam um importante papel na propagação das ciências. Registram-se instituições desta natureza, tanto como unidades isoladas, quanto como instituições pedagógicas (museus escolares). Considerando, especificamente, o museu Irmão Luiz Gartner, os dados revelaram um número significativo de aves e mamíferos no acervo. Alguns deles são hoje ameaçados de extinção. Atualmente, o acervo de aves contém, no total, 539 exemplares. Com relação ao acervo de mamíferos, conta com 198 exemplares. O trabalho também apresenta um conjunto de informações sobre demais objetos da cultura material escolar, tais como móveis, utensílios didáticos, bases arquitetônicas da edificação, que poderão ser utilizadas como fontes por pesquisadores que desejem se debruçar sobre o mesmo tema
