Bridging the Achievement Gap: Promoting Equity in Teachers' Use of Behavior-Specific Praise with Self-Monitoring and Performance Feedback

Knochel, Ashley E. 27 June 2019 (has links)
Disparities in academic and social outcomes for ethnically diverse students in educational settings has been identified in the literature as the achievement gap. This study examined the impact of teacher training interventions on establishing equity in teacher implementation of a common positive behavior classroom support strategy, behavior-specific praise in four elementary classrooms. Teacher self-monitoring and written performance feedback were used to facilitate teachers to improve classroom practices by establishing proportionate praise and discipline practices across racially diverse students. A multiple-baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the impact of self-monitoring and written performance feedback with and without equity-focused procedures on teacher delivery of behavior-specific praise and reprimands and their perception of student classroom behavior. Results indicated that the typical self-monitoring and written performance feedback were effective in increasing the participating teachers’ overall rates of delivering behavior-specific praise and reducing reprimands; however, substantial disparities in praise delivery were observed between demographic groups across all four teachers. Additional feedback regarding equity was necessary for reducing disparities in teacher behavior between demographic groups. The results also indicated that teacher perception of student classroom behavior improved, demonstrating decreased levels of disruptive student behavior and increased levels of respect and student engagement across all participants

Assessing Teacher Preference for Training Modalities for Behavior Intervention Plans

Porter, Laurel M. 22 March 2019 (has links)
Within public schools, teachers and instructors may require training to implement procedures listed in a behavior intervention plan (BIP) to support students with disabilities. It is crucial that teachers receive training that is both effective and efficient. Behavioral skills training (BST) and video modeling are two training modalities that are proven to be effective for a wide range of skills and learners. Written instructions, although they are not supported as an effective training method in the literature, can be used as task analysis for the steps that are needed to be performed for a procedure. At present, there is no standard for training teachers to implement BIP procedures and potentially effective training methods may be impacted by the amount of time training or the intensity of the training procedure. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess teacher preference for training modalities and to assess the feasibility of each modality in terms of training time and intensity. The participants in this study overwhelmingly selected self-assessments for both pre- and post-assessment evaluations as well as written instructions for their training modality.

Computergestützte berufliche Weiterbildung von Sportlehrkräften

Borchert, Thomas, Seidel, Niels, Schneider, Andre, Karapanos, Marios January 2017 (has links)

An Evaluation of Closed-Circuit Television Observation for Students Taking Certain Courses in Elementary Education

DeViney, Robert Dawson, 1915- 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine if significant differences in scores attained by students on academic achievement, problem-solving, and attitudes were associated with closed-circuit television observations. More specifically, the problem was resolved into seeking solutions to the following! 1. Will college students' academic achievement be extended through television observations of children in classroom situations? 2. Will college students' ability to solve problems be improved through television observations? 3. Will college students' attitudes toward teacher-pupil relationships be affected through television observations?

Školní hodnocení z pohledu studentů učitelství 1.stupně ZŠ / School Assessment from Primary Education Trainees Point of View

Skutil, Martin January 2020 (has links)
in English Assessment allows the teacher not only to assess the success of teaching, but also to plan other teaching objectives and means of their fulfillment, especially the content of teaching, the choice of methods and organizational forms. The diploma thesis aims to find out what types and forms of school assessment are prefered by Primary education teacher trainees. The second objectives is to identify what influences students' preferences in choosing the types and forms of school assessment, and to compare the views of 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students on school assessment. The theoretical part of the diploma thesis focuses on defining the researched issues, assessment functions, forms and methods of assessment. The research survey is conceived as a quantitative study, the respondents are students of the Primary education study programe. As a research method was chosen questionnaire of my own design. Key words Primary Education; assessment; school assessment; teacher training

Mentor Modeling Mismatch: Power Dynamics in Cooperating Teacher's Modeling for Preservice Teachers

Christensen, Morgan 09 February 2021 (has links)
Through the use of interview and observation data, collected over two years, this qualitative study describes the perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of two Cooperating Teachers (CTs) and their assigned Pre Service Teachers (PST; n = 12) who were mentored over the course of two Special Education practicum experiences and five CT professional development trainings. Special attention was focused on the ways that CTs and PSTs describe modeling and how CTs’ modeling seemed to affect the CT/PST relationship. Participant responses were analyzed using a qualitative narrative method and indicated that CT’s use of modeling served primarily as a socializing process in which PSTs learn the role of a professional teacher through their interactions with the CT. Also, different types of modeling (e.g., simple vs. cognitive) seemed to affect this socialization process. The outcomes of simple and cognitive modeling were highly varied and affected the CT/PST relationship development differently. Additional findings indicated that professional development that focused on cognitive modeling may be related to CTs’ mentoring role development and the way they implement mentoring processes. It is hoped that the findings in this study will help to initiate conversations between CTs and PSTs and teacher educators concerning the use of modeling and the potential effects modeling may have on the mentoring relationship.

In Search of Divine Liberated Love: A Yoga Memoir

Davidson, Katie D. 01 April 2022 (has links)
I opted to write a memoir about my personal experiences in yoga, rather than a traditional research-based thesis. A key distinction between memoir and autobiography or auto-ethnography is that it’s not linear—much like my yoga journey. Often, experiences, particularly around healing emotional trauma, are more circular in nature, perhaps even more of a spiral. According to Carl Jung, “The spiral in psychology means that when you make a spiral you always come over the same point where you have been before, but never really the same, it is above or below, inside, outside, so it means growth.” (Jung 5, p. 21). In his book Why Therapy Works: Using Our Minds to Change Our Brains, Louis Cozolino, PhD explains that coherent narratives, such as Joseph Campbell’s “the hero’s journey”, are an important part of psychotherapy and provide a way for individuals to make sense of and heal from complex trauma. To illustrate this point, I will be employing the Jungian-inspired “heroine’s journey” model developed my Maureen Murdock, PhD—a similar framework to the “hero’s journey” but through a feminist lens. Personal narrative can also be a form of (svādhyāya) self-study. I chose to organize my eventual memoir into three sections: Divine, Liberated, and Love. On their own, each word represents a crucial part of my yoga journey: Divine represents my invitation to the practice through isolated mystical experiences; Liberated represents the therapeutic benefits that kept me coming back to the mat, as well as my initiation into the depths of my shadow work and ultimately individuation from my saṃskāras, or “conscious our unconscious patterns of though, communication, and behaviors” (Yoga Therapy Foundations, Tools, and Practice 2021, p. 285); and Love represents my integration, a union of the paradoxical nature of divinity and individuality. Combined, the phrase “Divine Liberated Love” has taken my initial intention of integration to a much deeper level, helping me to remember who I truly am and what matters to me.
