National case study : teacher professional development with an education for sustainable development focus in South Africa: development of a network, curriculum framework and resources for teacher education

Lotz-Sisitka, Heila 1965- January 2011 (has links)
This national case study reports on the development of a national network, curriculum framework and resources for teacher education, with specific focus on the inclusion of environment and sustainability, also known as education for sustainable development (ESD) in the South African teacher education system. It reviews and reports on the history of environment and sustainability education in teacher education, and from this, the national case study begins to conceptualise a new approach to environment and sustainability teacher education within a new curriculum policy environment, and a new teacher education and development policy environment. Action research case study methodology is used to document the first phase of the emergence of this network, and this report covers Phase 1 of the initiative, which covers formation of the network, review of previous practices, three conceptual development pilot studies undertaken in both in-service and pre-service teacher education environments and a piloting of a ‘Train the Trainers’ or ‘Educate the Teacher Educators’ programme, which complements and extends the actual teacher education and development (TED) programme under development. The study highlights critical insights of relevance to the shift to a content referenced curriculum in South Africa, and shows how the ‘knowledge mix’ which forms the foundation of the new Teacher Education Qualifications Framework can be engaged. It also highlights some features of the changing knowledge environment, and what dominant knowledge practices are in environment and sustainability-related teaching and teacher education practices, opening these up for further scrutiny. It raises concerns that dominant knowledge work, while integrating a range of forms of knowledge (as is expected of the teacher education system under the new policy), tends to be limited by content on problems and issues for raising awareness, and fails to develop deeper conceptual depth and understanding of environment and sustainability, as issues based knowledge dominates. Similarly, it fails to support social innovation as a response to environment and sustainability concerns, as awareness raising dominates in dominant knowledge work. The study provides a revised conceptual framework for the Teacher Development Network (TEDN) programme, with guidance on key elements necessary to take the programme forward in Phase 2.

The Effects of Observing Others Versus Self-Observation on Teacher Accuracy In Presenting Learn Unit Instruction

Sarto, Elizabeth Ashley January 2017 (has links)
In Experiment I, I tested whether training teacher trainers to conduct TPRA observations to a calibrated standard by teaching them to 1) measure the accuracy of other individuals presenting learn unit instruction, then 2) measure their own accuracy in presenting learn unit instruction, would influence the accuracy of the teacher trainer’s own subsequent learn unit instruction, the accuracy of the teacher trainees’ learn unit instruction (after being trained via TPRA observations), or the numbers of objectives achieved by students, given instruction from their respective teacher trainees. The dependent variables included the accuracy of both the teacher trainers and the teacher trainees in presenting learn unit instruction, along with numbers of instructional objectives achieved by students. The independent variables included two successive treatment phases, in which the teacher trainers conducted TPRA’s on others presenting learn units, followed by TPRA’s on their own learn unit instruction. Following each intervention, the teacher trainers conducted in-situ TPRA’s with feedback on each of their respective teacher trainees. Following the in-situ TPRA’s with feedback conducted by the teacher trainers, I measured the dependent variables by conducting TPRA observations without feedback. The results indicated that both teacher trainers and teacher trainees demonstrated increased accuracy in Learn Unit presentations as a function of the treatment package. The rates of student learning also increased following the interventions. In Experiment II, I tested the effects of time, practice, and experience on the accuracy of teacher learn unit instruction. I measured teacher learn unit accuracy prior to and following a period of time that did not include any formal intervention. Additionally, I measured the numbers of in-situ TPRA’s required by each teacher to achieve mastery criteria for presenting learn units. The results showed that while each teacher demonstrated slight improvements in their learn unit delivery following practice alone, their accuracy was far from mastery criteria level. Additionally, all teachers required in-situ TPRA’s with feedback in order to achieve mastery criteria for delivering learn unit instruction. In Experiment III, I tested the effects of learning by observing others on teacher learn unit accuracy. Specifically, I measured teacher learn unit accuracy prior to and following a classroom training where the teachers were required to measure the accuracy of other individual’s learn unit instruction, by conducting TPRA observations on a set of standardized training videos. Additionally, I measured the numbers of post-intervention in-situ TPRA’s with feedback required by each teacher to achieve mastery criteria for presenting learn units. The results showed that two of the three teachers demonstrated improvements in their learn unit delivery following the training videos, however, their accuracy was far from mastery criteria level. Therefore, all teachers required in-situ TPRA’s with feedback in order to achieve mastery criteria for delivering learn units. In Experiment IV, I tested the effects of learning by observing videos of oneself on teacher learn unit accuracy. Specifically, I measured teacher learn unit accuracy prior to and following a classroom training where the teachers were required to measure the accuracy of their own learn unit instruction, by conducting TPRA observations on a set of pre-recorded videos of themselves delivering learn units. Additionally, I measured the numbers of post-intervention in-situ TPRA’s with feedback required by each teacher to achieve mastery criteria for presenting learn units. The results showed that all three teachers demonstrated mastery criteria for delivering learn units following the self-observation intervention. Therefore, none of the teachers required in-situ TPRA’s with feedback, as the skill was already in repertoire.

A Professional Development Program for Dental Medical Educators in Kuwait: Needs Assessment, Program Design and Formative Evaluation

Alyaseen, Haneen Juma January 2017 (has links)
New innovative methods of teaching and learning adopted from mainstream research and development in educational theory and practice are being adapted to serve the unique needs of the medical professions. The success of these methods requires careful planning and establishment of faculty development programs. The purpose of this study is to perform a needs assessment for a faculty development program at the Faculty of Dentistry- Kuwait University, centering on Case-based learning (CBL) and Problem-based learning (PBL) methods of teaching and lesson planning, and to design and test the faculty development digital module that is based on findings from the needs assessment. The author conducted a “proof of concept” mixed methods case study to answer three main research questions. First, what are the perceptions of the current dental faculty about the need for a professional development program? Second, what are the perceptions of, and characteristics and responses to, the learning experiences by a sample of the faculty who experience learning from a set of online professional development modules? Third, what evidence is there that the set of online modules have addressed the needs of the faculty participants? This study was conducted at Kuwait University Faculty of Dentistry. A needs assessment survey was sent to all 44 members of the faculty, of which 34 faculty responded to the needs assessment. The results of the needs assessment showed that overall there was a generally positive response to all of the items pertaining to a need for professional development with 28 faculty expressing interest in participating in an online faculty development program module. However, only 15 of the 28 who expressed interest actually participated in the online module. The results from the instruments embedded in the module showed that 87% of the participants were “satisfied with the module lesson on how to plan CBL lessons. The change in participants’ responses to the last three items of the post-instructional survey pertaining to case-based and problem-based learning was sufficiently large enough to be statistically significant. Future research expanding from this study would help to establish the foundational work to design a more substantial treatment of the various concepts covered in this study in a larger professional development program. The feedback and information gathered from the experimental modules such as used here can serve as a guide to improve and expand future program designs that encourage student-centered collaborative and transformative learning. Additional experimental research is also warranted where the novel designed products for professional development are evaluated by comparing the gains in student learning with the new methods compared to methods more typically used in traditional adult learning and dental education.

Bridging Theory and Practice: Using Hip-Hop Pedagogy As A Culturally Relevant Approach In The Urban Science Classroom

Adjapong, Edmund S. January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation explores the context of urban science education as it relates to the achievement and engagement of urban youth. This study provides a framework for Hip-Hop Pedagogy, an approach to teaching and learning anchored in the creative elements of Hip-Hop culture, in STEM as an innovative approach to teaching and learning demonstrates the effect that Hip-Hop Pedagogy, as a culturally relevant approach to teaching has on teaching and learning in an urban science classroom. This study establishes practical tools and approaches, which were formed from by theory and research that transcend the traditional monolithic approaches to teaching science. Participants in this study are middle school students who attend an urban school in one of the largest school systems in the country. This research showed that as result of utilizing Hip-Hop pedagogical practices, students reported that they developed a deeper understanding of science content, students were more likely to identify as scientists, and students were provided a space and opportunities to deconstruct traditional classroom spaces and structures.

Disability Studies, Multiculturalism and Urban Science Education: A Mixed-Methods Phenomenography of Graduate Student Learning

Boda, Phillip Andrew January 2017 (has links)
Urban and multicultural science teacher education research seeks to educate new science teachers to more fully understand ‘Science-for-all’ and prepare them to effectively navigate urban classrooms. Therefore, to successfully enhance ‘Science-for-all,’ there is a need to address what the labeling (i.e., categorical labeling and/or mislabeling) of students with disabilities means for science teacher education, its research and practice. Consequently, we need more research in this nascent field to ground this claim in evidence rather than speculation, especially as the disproportionality of students of color being placed in special education becomes more prevalent for all disciplines. This dissertation used a phenomenographic design to study a cohort of graduate students’ conceptualizations of disability and difference as they progressed through the only required diversity course in a science education program at a large, urban university in the American northeast. Twenty-two students within this ‘Science-for-all’ course participated in the study, with a subset of ten that opted into a more in-depth data collection. Data collection included in-depth interviews, a modified Pedagogy of Science Teaching Test (POSTT-DIS), and a Classroom Learning Environment Questionnaire, as well as bi-weekly course reflections and bi-weekly lessons created by the participants. Mixed-methods data analyses addressed to what extent these graduate students embraced a Disability Studies in Education perspective relative to disability and also whether the students developed a critical lens toward difference (i.e., expressed, imagined, and/or imposed variations in human behavior and potential). Further analyses explored to what extent these theoretical elements transferred into pragmatic applications by the participants, for example in their lesson planning, that addressed disability and difference to provide evidence of their capabilities to bridge theory to practice. Findings suggest that the course maintained the relatively static conceptualizations about disability held by the participants – the likely contributing factors are explored in more depth, including recommendations for improvement. The data also suggest that while students in this course were able to theorize critically about multicultural issues in urban science education, their capacities to reflect on their pedagogical decisions and plan comprehensive ‘Science-for-all’ classroom learning environments remained disciplinary focused. Thus, rather than emphasizing critical pedagogies that are pertinent for effective and transformative change in science education for diverse populations, the participants remained focused on narrowly defined, content-specific ways of teaching and learning science. Implications for this research include focusing on both the goals and implementations of courses such as this one, attending to the unique case of disability as outside the realm of conceptualizing difference, and attending to graduate students’ needs to help them bridge the divide between theory to practice.

The research approached the universe of teachers training under the perspective of supervised training in Physical Education, considering as central question the way wich mentors becomes a trainer in the context of the stage. The aims were: (a) characterize the space of supervised stage, (b) characterize the mentors work and (c) indicate that knowledge and practices comes from the mentor in the context of the stage. The qualitative research. Study participants are five mentors from Rio Claro city whom receive students in oficial character of the professional stage and nine trainees from the Undergraduate in Physical Education of UNESP/RC. The techniques used were documentary analysis, systematic observation, recording, semi-structured interviews and content analysis. For all steps it were used the free and consent term, approved by the institutional ethics committee. The data have undergone treatment of QDAMiner software, allowing its presentation in three axes. Among the results, the first, stage of the universe, it allowed to analyze the partner schools, the mentor and its conception of stage, the second, the establishment of mentor, it allowed to make inferences about the teaching profession, the choice of being a mentor, and its role and function, finally, the third, the guidance during the internship stage, it could be possibile to systematized the way each mentor approaches his trainees and which knowledge are used. In general, it should be said that the space of stage is a universe which brings together the universe academic discourse and the practice of school, being a training site, but it has its difficulty in recognizing this role. The mentor was understood as someone whom is trained to be a teacher, but at some point in his career began to receive trainees for goodwill or friendship. He does not... Flugge, Flávia Cristina Gomes. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: The main aim of this study is to produce an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of narratives and of oral history as part of a problematising teaching approach, within Pedagogy courses focusing on mathematics and its teaching. The study is part of the project "Oral history as a resource on the development of pre- and in-service teacher education," led by the supervisor of the present study. We have followed the discipline "Content, methods and practice of mathematics teaching," in the year 2013, as part of a Pedagogy course at UNESP/Rio Claro. We proposed material involved with mathematics and its teaching, using strategies consistent with the interest of the broader project. Oral history was used as the research methodology. We analyzed the narratives produced by the teacher-students and the narrative produced from an interview with some of the teacher-students. We assess the approach proposed through the strategies adopted, based on narratives and oral history as tools for enhancing the education and professional development of future teachers of mathematics. This approach enabled the reflection and discussion of the participants through their experiences about memories and experiences as students, about the perception they have of themselves regarding mathematics and its teaching besides other experiences through written and oral narratives and through teachers on issues related to mathematics during the course and teacher practices. This activity resulted in a coherence perspective regarding future performances as professionals who teach mathematics. We evaluate the narrative approach and the use of HO as a fruitful tool in order to stimulate formative processes of educators who will work in the mathematics area / Mestre

Alves, Carine de Mendonça, 1985- January 2018 (has links)
