How is information and knowledge communicated? : A case study on communication within and across software-provisioning team boundaries

Today it has become standard for organizations to rely on self-serving teams to make decisions since they are believed to provide access to bigger pools of information and knowledge than individual managers. However, while a lot of research has been focusing on how to improve information and knowledge sharing in teams to better promote the making of deliverables, not much has been said about how self-serving teams actually communicate information and knowledge. In this thesis a qualitative study was conducted with seven members of a software-provisioning team to, with particular focus on using IT when communicating, investigate how information and knowledge is communicated within and across team boundaries. Findings in this thesis suggest that there is a tension between information and knowledge sharing in teams. While the formalization of technological channels might facilitate effective information sharing in teams, it could have negative effects on knowledge sharing.

Bedside Reporting: Improving Practice

Bedside reporting is one way to improve communication among the health care team. At the study site, at least 50% of bedside reporting was being conducted at the door of the patient's room instead of at the patient's bedside. The project question addressed whether a computer-based education and training video on bedside reporting and a standardized bedside reporting checklist would increase the rate of bedside shift-to-shift reporting among a medical surgical unit (MSU) to 100%. The project addressed the implementation of standardizing bedside reporting through education and training using Agency for Health Care Research and Quality's (AHRQ) Guide to patient and family engagement. The project also promoted use of a standardized tool to conduct bedside reporting and a surveillance tool to ensure bedside reporting was being conducted. Data was collected through surveys and surveillance. The data was tabulated for frequencies displayed in percentages. Post-implementation findings indicated that bedside reporting went from 0% to 86% during the 2-week surveillance period. MSU nursing staff improved their knowledge and skill on how to conduct bedside reporting, but their attitude did not change as they thought the practice of bedside reporting was not an effective use of their time. Findings may be used to increase involvement of patients and families in their inpatient health care.

Abstract: When playing in teams, communication is important, not just communication with words but also non-verbal communication such as gestures and body languish. The purpose with this study is to see how there is a co-op among communicating players , between leaders and players and to examine what meaning communication and culture got  in a youth team. The ambition with this study was to increase our knowledge about communication and communicationculture in the youth floorball team. This study is qualitative and was inspired by an ethnographical method so we got the information from observations of a youth floorball team, totally we made four observations. The result were analyzed and categorized from our observation papers. The results where categorized into four headlines, One and two-way communication, Artifacts, The communicationculture of the youth team and actions. The leader got a very important role as communicator and pedagogical leader for the communicationculture that the individual of the group wants to be used in order to promote the development in the team. In the future, more teams needs to be studied to get a more reliable source of information that can be used on a greater populace.

Entrepreneurial teams and design thinking : a longitudinal evaluation of success factors

Design continuously re-defines its meaning. Over the last years, the way designers interpret information, solve problems as well as prototype and express ideas has received increased attention from domains outside of traditional design, especially from the business world. However, much of the design thinking discourse outside of traditional design centres around a few widely-read practitioner books and only builds on a rudimentary understanding of its principles. Likewise, the academic literature only offers a few rigorous investigations of the application of design thinking in the management and innovation domain, especially when it comes to thedevelopment of novice multidisciplinary teams. Therefore, this thesis provides an evaluation of the influence of the following five key themes discussed in the design thinking literature: Team diversity, iteration, learning styles, creative confidence, and team communication. These themes were explored during a quantitative quasi-experimental research study, which was built on a novel research framework. Data wascollected from 42 German research participants over a period of 10 month. The longitudinal perspective enabled the researcher to illustrate how novices develop design thinking competencies in projects over time. While investigating team diversity, multidisciplinary teams were found to produce significantly better project outcomes than single-discipline teams. On the other hand, diversity of personality traits was not found to have a significant effect on the final performance of teams. The exploration of iteration behaviour revealed that multidisciplinary teams did not iterate significantly more than single-discipline teams. In addition, more experienced participants approached design thinking projects slightly less iteratively thannovices. Overall, the degree of iteration was not found to have a significant effect on the final team performance. Regarding the use of different learning styles, it was discovered that, teams with a balance of learning styles achieved significantly better project outcomes than less-balanced teams. In terms of learning styles, participants approached design thinking tasks mainly through rational conceptualisation rather than concrete experience. Theanalysis of individual and team confidence showed that creative confidence developed slowly and linearly over the course of a project, but only partly carried over to new project and team settings. Furthermore, no evidence was found that higher levels of creative confidence directly influenced the quality of the project outcomes. The investigation of team communication revealed that the importance of individuals in design thinking teams significantlychanged over the course of a project. Contrary to previous assumptions, high degrees of internal team cohesion were found to have a significant negative effect on project outcomes. While several of these findings clarify and reiterate existing design thinking theory, others call for an adjustment of theory and highlight the need for more rigorous research. Several recommendations are offered for practitioners, educators, and researchers on how to incorporate the presented findings into practice and future research.

Understanding Team Cognition through Communication Analysis: Measuring Team Interaction Patterns Using Recurrence Plots

abstract: By extracting communication sequences from audio data collected during two separate five-person mission-planning tasks, interaction patterns in team communication were analyzed using a recurrence-based, nonlinear dynamics approach. These methods, previously successful in detecting pattern change in a three-person team task, were evaluated for their applicability to larger team settings, and their ability to detect pattern change when team members switched roles or locations partway through the study (Study 1) or change in patterns over time (Study 2). Both traditional interaction variables (Talking Time, Co-Talking Time, and Sequence Length of Interactions) and dynamic interaction variables (Recurrence Rate, Determinism, and Pattern Information) were explored as indicators and predictors of changes in team structure and performance. Results from these analyses provided support that both traditional and dynamic interaction variables reflect some changes in team structure and performance. However, changes in communication patterns were not detected. Because simultaneous conversations are possible in larger teams, but not detectable through our communication sequence methods, team pattern changes may not be visible in communication sequences for larger teams. This suggests that these methods may not be applicable for larger teams, or in situations where simultaneous conversations may occur. Further research is needed to continue to explore the applicability of recurrence-based nonlinear dynamics in the analysis of team communication. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Applied Psychology 2012

The purpose of this diploma thesis is to describe the current findings on the relationship of temperament, dimensions of team communication and individual resilience. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces a findings of relevant theories of temperament, with focus on Cloninger's psychobiological concept. The topic of temperament continues by the definition of resilience and areas of particular application in occupational psychology is presented. Finally are presented a problems of team communication and related aspects of teamwork. The empirical part introduces the research realized with project teams of students from the University of Economics in Prague, in which 35 students from 7 project teams participated. The subject of the research was to determine possible correlation of team communication, temperament characteristics and their individual resilience. The main methods used in this work are a shortened version of the Cloninger inventory of TCI-56 (Adan, Serra-Grabulosa, Caci, & Natale, 2009), the standardized sociomapping questions (Bahboub, 2011) and the resilience scale CD-RISC-25 (Connor & Davidson, 2003). Perceived Proximity in Times of Spatial Distance : Understanding the Mediating Effect of Communication Behavior in Suddenly Dispersed Teams

Background: The persistent Covid-19 pandemic tremendously challenged existing work teams as it drove spatial dispersion among colleagues and greater dependence on virtual communication tools. Consequently, teams were required to adapt proven communication practices that mediate the exchange of social information and the perception of proximity to teammates. Aim: We aim to broaden team studies’ theoretical understanding of communication behavior and proximity in the light of contextual changes by developing an empathic understanding of the contemporary phenomena. This entails identifying arisen communication behavior patterns and assessing the impact of behavioral changes on team members’ perception of proximity. Methodology: By conducting a qualitative case study, we investigated three teams of a medium-sized German fashion corporation. The iterative data collection entailed six semi-structured interviews with individuals and focus groups and complementary quantitative surveys. Findings: We posit that sudden spatial dispersion of familiar teams does not inevitable lead to greater perceived distance, but that a team’s ability to appropriate technology, so social needs are met, is decisive. Further, the new communication practices of all teams were found to maintain high levels of synchronicity and social informational value. Yet, communication quality and social exchange was partially hampered by reduced spontaneity, greater passiveness, and a loss of humor. This was found to be strongly influenced by team members’ attitudes towards used technology.

This thesis focuses on team processes, such as cooperation, communication, engagement and work overload in non-profit organizations. Furthermore, it monitors the transformation of these parameters into an optimal form. The transformation is observed through the sociomapping method, which is used to visualize team processes. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with teams and selected processes within them. Attention is also paid to team diagnostics, which aims to describe and comprehend team processes. Additionally, it introduces team interventions which enable better team cooperation. The following chapter focuses on the specifics of teamwork in the non-profit sphere. The empirical part presents a qualitative research, which determines how the sociomapping method realized through the means of action research affects cooperation within a team. Further, it attempts to describe how the visualization of team processes, team coaching and action plans support change in team processes and how all these three interventions influence cooperation and communication within two selected teams of one non-profit organization.
