Realita a virtualita aneb Je facebook reálný nebo virtuální prostor? / Reality and virtuality. Is Facebook real or virtual space.Saňková, Klára January 2011 (has links)
Existence of Facebook is based on software. For this reason it is commonly considered and treated as a virtual only space. But this well known phenomenon influences lives of many people and this impact on daily life cannot be overlooked. This thesis is about balancing on that fine line between real and virtual space and about questions that this brings. It gathers together different definitions of those terms and shows what most of Facebook functionality bring to this matter. Based on survey made for this thesis we can say the influence is really being underestimated even tough people that spend lot of their time on Facebook are more aware of its impact.

Vernacular mapping : affect, virtuality, performanceGerlach, Joseph Andrew January 2012 (has links)
In diagramming the recent, global proliferation in quotidian cartographic technologies and practices, this thesis is concerned with the re-imagining of durable geographic motifs and refrains; those of maps and mappings. Conceptually, the thesis works to explore and interrogate the underplayed non-representational registers of cartography. Specifically, this entails unsettling the assumed ontological security of maps as representational artefacts, at the same time accentuating their affective and virtual vectors through an attentiveness to their spatial emergence and performance. In doing so, maps are rendered here not as mimetic, static grids of existence, but as intensive performances, productive of an unqualified geographic and political potential; that is to say, spaces of the virtual. Empirically, these conceptual concerns are worked through a series of fieldwork traces that animate and narrate a number of quite distinct yet resonant cartographic performances; namely geographic encounters with a counter-cartography group in North Carolina; a digital, open-source mapping organisation in both the UK and Peru and finally with two examples of an institutional cartography: Google and Ordnance Survey. Through these mappings, these fieldwork traces, what the thesis works towards is a micropolitical diagramming of contemporary cartographic practices, a diagramming that complicates deliberately the representational certitude of maps, but moreover, one that affirms the (im)material, anticipatory and minor geopolitics of mapping; a mapping of and for the everyday; a mapping of and for the vernacular.

Still FiresKatz, Rachael E 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This book is about two families in Seattle acting out their dysfunction through a virtual world created by the families’ wrongheaded patriarchs. It attempts to explore digital world-building in the 21st century as an indefatigable expression of our cultural and personal desire to possess and produce the other, or our inability to imagine anything truly new even as we are capable of creating new forms with which to imagine and manifest that which we imagine. Note: this is an early draft of the book.

An Augmented Virtuality Navigation System for Arthroscopic Knee SurgeryLi, John 30 November 2010 (has links)
Arthroscopic knee surgery can be challenging because there is no intuitive relationship between the arthroscopic image, shown on a screen above the patient, and the camera in the surgeon's hand. As a result, arthroscopic surgeons require extensive training and experience.
This thesis describes a computer system to help improve target acquisition in arthroscopy by visualizing the location and alignment of an arthroscope using augmented virtuality. A 3D computer model of the patient's joint (from CT) is shown, along with a model of the tracked arthroscopic probe and the projection of the camera image onto the virtual joint.
We performed a user study to determine the effectiveness of this navigated display; the study showed that for novice residents, the navigated display improved target acquisition. However, residents with at least two years of experience performed worse. For surgeons, no effect on performance was found. / Thesis (Master, Computing) -- Queen's University, 2010-11-25 23:29:46.526

Além disso, nos dizeres analisados, além do sujeito do gozo, emergiu o sujeito do desejo, reforçando o caráter heterogêneo que constitui os subjetividade (pós-) moderna / Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the identity creations in virtuality and the modes of subjectivity which emerge on this context, specifically in/from the simulation game Second Life. For this, we selected publicizing texts and sayings by simulator users taken from magazines, newspapers, download websites and blogs that approach the presentation, the publicizing of the program and the identity creations in the referred environment. The present study assumed that the virtual environment has transformed the world, making it another one; idea which makes the imaginary in virtual reality and is defended by Lévy (1999, p.15 -75), who often refers to a "new universe" [supposedly] made possible by virtuality. Based on statements like this, we assume the hypothesis that it is a "new" world, but that appears in the overlapping of the same and the different. To prove [or not] the hypothesis, we explored the following objectives: the problematization of reality and virtuality, the analysis of representations of the self and the other in cyberspace and the identification of regimes of truth, power relations which crosses the world called real and virtual. Through the analysis of selected excerpts, the hypothesis was confirmed once the identities created in the simulator (re)produced the possibilities of the real world and, when enunciated, such creations work in the spacing, through a movement that joins and distances reality and virtuality. Moreover, in the analyzed speechs besides the subject of pleasure (jouissance), it emerged the subject of desire, reinforcing the heterogeneity that constitutes the (post-)modern subjectivity / Mestrado / Linguagem e Tecnologia / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

Abstract: This abstract is composed with some bets. Bet on the Gilles Deleuze concept of duration and on how this concept creates potentialities, senses and possibilities to think in-between scientific divulgation images of a biodiversity conservation research program, the Biota/Fapesp. Bet on the approximation to the duration to think in-between natural science images, to think with the idea that the scientist is also an creator that has inten(t)(s)ion of creation. Action and intensity of creation. Bet on the in-between as a source of movement-duration immanent, a source where creative potencies emerges, the potentiality of thoughts as associative and stratigraphic movements and not structured by the habit. Thoughts build with attentive perceptions of what blows up and not automatic perceptions. Bets that help me to think on multiciplity, virtuality and afection on the inbetween images created for this thesis. / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação
