Implementing Usability Testing Of Technical Documents At Any Company And On Any Budget

In my thesis I discuss the cost effectiveness of usability testing of technical documents and how any size company with any size budget can implement usability testing. Usability is achieved when the people who use products or technical documents can do so quickly and easily to accomplish their own tasks. Usability testing is best defined as the process of studying users to determine a documentation project's effectiveness for its intended audience. Users are tired of dealing with confusing and unintuitive technical documentation that forces them to either call customer service for help on simple issues or throw out the product in favor of one that is more usable or provides better technical documentation. That is why all technical communicators should include usability testing as part of the technical documentation production cycle. To help technical communicators understand the importance of usability testing, I discuss the cost effectiveness of usability testing and share ways that companies with large budgets and companies with small budgets can begin incorporating usability testing. Then I provide information on all the steps that are necessary for technical communicators to implement usability testing of technical documentation at their company. Options are presented for everything from bare minimum usability testing with a shoe-string budget with pencils, note pads, and only a handful of users to full scale usability testing in large laboratories with the latest equipment and a wide variety of users. The research provides examples from real companies, advice from experienced technical communicators and usability experts, and research demonstrating how many resources are truly required to benefit from usability testing. By showing technical communicators that usability testing is cost effective and that there are many options for implementing usability testing no matter how large or small their budget is, I hope to empower technical communicators to start including usability testing as part of the documentation production cycle at their companies.

The same should be updated and in the correct places, so the user does not have the chance to use outdated documents. This research aimed investigate the control of management of technical documents belonging to the Division of Engineering Design and Supervision of Works of the City of Federal University of Amazonas, in order to minimize or eliminate the possible problems arising from lack of quality in management of technical documents of responsibility of this Division. Thus it was realized that the process occurs in different ways, therefore, there is not a procedure systematic where everyone had to follow, so the technical document management was confident in its entire flow. The proposed study was based on literature review, questionnaires, interviews and observations. The results and analysis of this provide a better knowledge of this issue and, fundamentally, a proposal to solve, or minimize this liability within the institution. The generation, input, output, review, cancellation and archiving of technical documents for engineering were defined. / Visto que a documentação técnica é um dos principais insumos dos processos de manutenção, operação, expansão e reforma dos projetos, conseqüentemente é indispensável que haja um excelente gerenciamento de controle dos documentos para que o fluxo de informações nos documentos ocorra de maneira confiável. Os mesmos devem estar atualizados e nos lugares corretos, para que o usuário não tenha a possibilidade de usar documentos desatualizados. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar o controle do gerenciamento dos documentos técnicos de engenharia pertencentes à Divisão de Projetos e Fiscalização de Obras da Prefeitura da Universidade Federal do Amazonas, a fim de minimizar ou eliminar os possíveis problemas decorrentes da deficiência da qualidade no gerenciamento de documentos técnicos de responsabilidade desta Divisão. Foi realizado um estudo na Divisão de Projetos e Fiscalização de Obras para identificar o controle do fluxo de documentos técnicos de engenharia. Dessa forma percebeu-se que o processo ocorre de maneiras diferenciadas, pois não tem uma sistemática de procedimentos onde todos tenham que seguir, de modo que o gerenciamento de documentos técnicos seja confiável em todo o seu fluxo. O estudo proposto foi baseado em levantamento bibliográfico, aplicação de questionário, entrevistas e observações. Os resultados e análises deste estudo propiciaram melhor conhecimento da problemática e fundamenta uma proposta para resolver ou minimizar esse passivo dentro da instituição. Foram definidos os procedimentos de geração, entrada, saída, revisão, cancelamento e arquivamento de documentos técnicos de engenharia.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The agricultural machinery design process is characterized by the transformation of elevated number abstract information in a physical model. This work presents the development of a Documentation System for the Design of Agricultural Machinery along the stages of planning and design of the Model of Reference for the Agricultural Machinery Development Process, which will be used like standard model in the execution of these projects. The methodology adopted was the employment of researches of the descriptive and exploratory kind about matters concerning the subject of the work, among them: model of reference for the agricultural machines development process; modeling of information; management of the knowledge; projects documentation systems; and, management of the communications. The specific objectives reached was definition and classification of the kinds documents, establishment of the form of presentation and of the content of each document, definition of technical way for presentation of the documents, definition of the architecture of the Design Documentation System, modeling of the documents of project and integration of the Design Documentation System to the Model of Reference for the Agricultural Machinery Development Process. The result obtained permitted the definition of three base models kinds: (i) Models of documents for alfa-numerical elements, forms and graphics; (ii) Models of documents for representative plans; and, (iii) Models of documents for illustration of technical drawings. The structure of the system of documentation developed in this work can be deployment in two parts, one with the management documents and another with the technical documents, jointly with term of opening and tutorial. It was obtained the definition, classification, relation with the domains of the knowledge and establishment of specific content for one hundred and thirty-six documents, of the which, fifty-four are of management nature and eighty-two of technical nature. / As fases iniciais do processo de projeto de máquinas agrícolas são caracterizadas pelo tratamento de elevado número de informações abstratas, as quais tornam-se mais concretas à medida que se aproximam das fases finais, tomando a forma de modelos físicos. Tal complexidade exige a prática do processo de projeto de modo sistematizado, que possibilite o registro, a gestão e a armazenagem dos conhecimentos, tecnologias geradas e decisões tomadas durante a sua execução, através de um adequado Sistema de Documentação de Projetos. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um Sistema de Documentação para o Projeto de Máquinas Agrícolas (SDP-MA) ao longo das macrofases de planejamento e projetação do Modelo de Referência para o Processo de Desenvolvimento de Máquinas Agrícolas (MR-PDMA), para que seja usado como modelo padrão na execução destes projetos. A metodologia adotada foi a realização de pesquisas do tipo exploratória e descritiva sobre assuntos pertinentes ao tema do trabalho, entre os quais se destacam: modelo de referência para o processo de desenvolvimento de máquinas; modelagem de informações; gestão do conhecimento; sistemas de documentação de projetos; e, gerenciamento das comunicações. Foram executadas atividades parciais na busca ao objetivo geral, entre as quais, têm-se: definição e classificação dos tipos de documentos, estabelecimento da forma de apresentação e do conteúdo de cada documento, viabilização técnica para apresentação dos documentos, definição da arquitetura do Sistema de Documentação de Projetos, modelagem dos documentos de projeto e integração do SDP-MA ao MR-PDMA. O resultado obtido permitiu a definição de três tipos de modelos base: (i) Modelos de documentos para elementos alfa-numéricos, planilhas e gráficos; (ii) Modelos de documentos para esquemas representativos; e, (iii) Modelos de documentos para ilustração de desenhos técnicos. A estrutura do sistema de documentação desenvolvido neste trabalho pode ser decomposta em dois pacotes, um com os documentos gerenciais e outro com os documentos técnicos, juntamente com termo de abertura e tutorial. Obteve-se definição, classificação, relação com os domínios do conhecimento e estabelecimento de conteúdo específico para cento e trinta e seis documentos, dos quais, cinqüenta e quatro são de natureza gerencial e oitenta e dois de natureza técnica.

Diploma Thesis „Polyfunctional building“. The work deals implementation project of polyfunctional building in Jihlava. Object is situated on Jihlava suburb in emerging part called „Horní Kosov“. Land is gently sloping from west to east. It continues for Buková street. The building has six floors and a basement. The basement is made from monolithic reinforced concrete. It is used as garages. Floors are made of ceramic bricks with isolation . First floor contains four commercial premises and main entry for housing part. Seventeen flats are situated from second to sixth floor. Sizes of apartments are 1+kitchen corner to 4+kitchen corner with terraces and balcony. Roofing is solved with simple flat roof. Heating will be ensured with central heating. Every apartment, commercial premises, shared premises are going to have it’s own gas boiler. Polyfunctional building is connected on a local road – Buková street, which is connected to new communication. Within multifunctional building twenty parking slots is designed at the basement. Next fourteen parking slots is designed outside.
