Bryconamericus iheringi assimilou principalmente invertebrados aquáticos e secundariamente algas, enquanto Bryconamericus sp. assimilou principalmente invertebrados aquáticos e terrestres. / The objective of this study was to determine the composition of fishes of Alto Jacuí subbasin streams, north-central region of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as describe and understand the relationships that permeate the feeding biology of species of Siluriformes and Characidae in these same streams. Samples were collected bimonthly from July 2012 to June 2013, through electrofishing technique in 10 streams. A total of 13,247 individuals were collected, belonging to 42 species, 10 families and six orders, of which the most contributed, were Characiformes (36%), Cichliformes (24%) and Siluriformes (14%), with 15, ten and six species, respectively. We report the first record of Phalloceros spiloura to the Laguna dos Patos system and five species were to genus level due to the fact they refer to new species and are being reviewed and described. The stomach contents of 1,948 individuals belonging to three species (Heptapterus sp., Rhamdia quelen and Trichomycterus poikilos) were analyzed by volumetric method, with 59 identified food items. Overall, Heptapterus sp. consumed a high proportion of Aegla sp., remains of terrestrial plants and Megaloptera; R. quelen consumed fish and Oligochaeta, followed by Aegla sp.; while T. poikilos diet was based on Simuliidae, Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. Food segregation of species as well as species plus size class factors, were observed. The niche breadth values were high for all species, and only were low for the larger sizes of R. quelen and Heptapterus sp. Overall, the species showed low niche overlap values, and there was a high frequency overlay high and intermediate for smaller size classes. The null model confirmed the niche partitioning among species and a sharing of resources when analyzed species plus size class. Subsequently, 1,525 stomachs were analyzed representing 11 species of Characidae. There was a significant difference between the diet of these species, with terrestrial and aquatic plants, terrestrial and aquatic insect remains and adult Hymenoptera, being the most important items for this differentiation. The analysis showed that feeding patterns associated with many morphological features. Sub-terminal mouth positions correlated with the ingestion of benthic items (e.g., aquatic insects and organic matter); large mouths permited ingestion of robust items such as macrocrustaceans (e.g., Aegla) and fish; species that have small teeth variation along the outer row of the premaxilla consumed high proportion of plants and terrestrial insects as well as those species that showed a lower number of teeth on the maxilla. Aquatic insectivory was observed in those individuals with intermediary and high number of cusps in the maxilla teeth. To understand the coexistence of four syntopic Characidae species we calculated niche overlap of species for each sampling period, and to evaluate the importance of these food items as nutrient sources, we used carbon (13C) and nitrogen (14N) isotopes analyses to estimate relative assimilation. All characids consumed large proportions of plant material and aquatic insects. The species showed low dietary overlap throughout most of the sampling period. There was high correspondence between the gut content analyses and isotope mixing model estimates. Astyanax xiru and Astyanax procerus assimilated large fractions of terrestrial invertebrates and aquatic plants. Bryconamericus iheringi assimilated primarily aquatic invertebrates and secondarily algae, whereas Bryconamericus sp. assimilated primarily aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. Therefore, we demonstrate that the congeneric species have more similar diets, but that these four Characidae species coexist by resource partitioning, and that they assimilate nutrients agree with the relative consumption of food items.

It was studied the width of upper anterior teeth in 121 Brazilian college students intending to determine which models and brands would be more adequate to such group. The whole dental arch was molded with alginate and stone type four was poured in the oclusal surface of teeth while stone type two was poured in the left parts. Those teeth did not present abnormal abrasions, fillings or deformities. Periodont was healthy presenting little or none gengival retraction, inflamation or hipertrophy. Both stone models and artificial teeth had their mesio-distal distance (width) measured by a digital caliper rule. It was not observed significant difference between genders or right and left hemi-arches when comparing to the upper anterior teeths width. Considering the analyzed brands none was considered appropriate to such group because there were little options besides sizes being considered too small when compared to natural teeth, which pointed to the necessity to adapt or to create models more adequate to the Brazilian reality.

It is caused by blood flow out trom dental pulp, with the penetration of hemoglobin and its sub products into dentinal tubules. Factors such as temperature and the position of the bodies are considered to help the development of such situation. This research used two samples to analyze the phases of that chromatic change. One of the samples was a group of naturally pink deciduous teeth. The other group was deciduous teeth that the pink pigmentation was reproduced experimentally. After reproduction of pink pigmentation, these teeth were histological and spectrophotometric analyzed in different days. Therefore it was concluded that the hemoglobin is responsible for color change and its degradation happens slower that was earlier thought / Mestrado / Mestre em Odontologia Legal e Deontologia

The use of δ]¹³C values of leporid teeth as indicators of past vegetation / The use of [delta]¹³C values of leporid teeth as indicators of past vegetationWicks, Travis Zhi-Rong 15 November 2013 (has links)
Records of change of [delta]13C values in vertebrate teeth offer an opportunity to gain insight into changes in past vegetation. Increasingly, teeth from small mammals are used for such purposes, but because their teeth grow very rapidly, seasonal changes in vegetation potentially provide a large source of variability in carbon isotope composition, complicating interpretations of small mammal tooth isotope data. To investigate the controls of seasonality on the stable isotope composition of fossil teeth, we constructed a Monte-Carlo-based model to simulate the effects of changes in the seasonal pattern of diet in leporid lagomorphs (rabbits and hares) on the distribution of [delta]¹³C values in random populations of leporid teeth from the Edwards Plateau in central Texas. Changes in mean-state, seasonal vegetation range, and relative season length manifest themselves in predictable ways in the median, standard deviation, and skewness of simulated tooth [delta]¹³C populations, provided sufficient numbers of teeth are analyzed. This Monte Carlo model was applied to the interpretation of a 20,000 year record of leporid tooth [delta]¹³C values from Hall's Cave on the Edwards Plateau in central Texas. Variations in the [delta]¹³C values of teeth deposited at the same time (standard deviation = 1.69%) are larger than changes in the mean vegetation composition reconstructed from bulk organic carbon [delta]¹³C, indicating the influence of short-term variability, making it difficult to assess changes in mean C3/C4 vegetation from the tooth [delta]¹³C data. However, populations of teeth from different climate intervals (e.g., the late Glacial, Younger Dryas, and the Holocene) display changes in the shape of the tooth [delta]¹³C distributions. Interpretation of these changes as shifts in seasonal vegetation patterns that are based upon results from our model are consistent with hypothesized climatic changes. An increase in the standard deviation of the tooth population between the late Glacial and the Younger Dryas -- Holocene is consistent with an increase in seasonality. Furthermore, a shift to more C3-dominated vegetation in the tooth [delta]¹³C distribution during the Younger Dryas is accompanied by a more skewed population -- indicative of not only wetter conditions but an increase in the duration in the C3 growing season. However, late Holocene changes in vegetation are not clear in the tooth data, despite the evidence from bulk organic carbon [delta]¹³C values for an increase in % C3 vegetation of 57%. Small mammal teeth can potentially provide unique insights into climate and vegetation on seasonal and longer timescales that complement other data, but should be interpreted with a careful consideration of local conditions, taxon ecology and physiology, and the dominant timescales of isotope variability. / text

Odontologinės pagalbos vaikams organizavimas Kauno mieste / Organization of odontological help for children in Kaunas cityMatulaitienė, Živilė Kristina 16 June 2005 (has links)
SUMMARY
Aim of the study. To analyze how odontological help is provided to children in Kaunas City.
Objectives. 1. To describe the volume, legal basis of odontological assistance for children. 2. To compare odontological assistance rendered to children in private and primary health care centres. 3. To forecast the opportunities of odontological assistance organization in the future.
Methods. The investigated persons consist of Kaunas C. children of 1 – 18, children parents and heads of odontological institutions. A child is considered to be a statistic observance unit. The employed epidemiological investigation method is written interrogation: 200 questionnaires for children parents (168 questionnaires were returned) and 30 questionnaires for the heads of odontological institutions (7 questionnaires were replied by public, 23 – private teeth treatment institutions heads). The data of the questionnaire have been statistically evaluated by using SPSS 12 statistical program package.
Results. More than half (51 percent) of parents take their children to private teeth treatment institutions. 30 per cent of children are treated in Public Institution Odontological Departments. In the school rooms 2 per cent of children are treated. The parent choice to take children to private odontological clinic has been determined by service quality (58.8 percent), doctor competence (49.4 percent) and variety of services (21.2 percent). The public teeth treatment institutions are chosen because... [to full text]
