A pilot study on the influence of educational interventions on domestic electricity consumers

Bukula, Thembani 11 1900 (has links)
This pilot study consists of two parts. The first part investigates the extent to which the domestic electricity consumers intend to use and use energy efficiently using the Theory of Planned Behaviour. The second part investigates the extent to which the Energy @ Home educational intervention changed the domestic electricity consumers’ behaviour. For the first part of the study an advertisement was published and a convenience stratified sample of 61 domestic electricity consumers were selected from the 290 respondents. Data was collected from the domestic electricity consumers via a questionnaire and a telephone response log. The co-relational research design was used to investigate the relationship between the predictor variables the independent variables in the constructs of the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Simple linear regression analysis resulted in F statistic for the predicted behavioural intention was 29.74 with a p value less than 0.0001 which indicates significant statistical evidence of a linear relation between the predictor variables and the independent variables. The r2 of 0.87 implies that data points that fall closely along the best fit line. Therefore the predictor variables were good predictors of the response variable. All the participants that intended to use electricity efficiently confirmed via the telephone that they were using electricity efficiently. In the second part of the study 11 out of the 61 participants were chosen to participate in the Energy @ Home educational intervention and television program. Data was collected via the Energy audit log and the electricity consumption log. The participants intended to save between 2% and 35% of their electricity consumption and the actual electricity consumption savings were between 2% and 30%. / Science and Technology Education / M. 'n Ondersoek van Afrikaanssprekendes se behoeftes aan Afrikaanse televisieprogramme : 'n gevallestudie

Grobler, Johannes Marthinus 06 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the need for Afrikaans television programmes among Afrikaans viewers in the changing media environment in South Africa. Needs are studied by means of a case study among grade 10 learners in Pretoria. The uses and gratifications approach serves as the theoretical framework of the study and a number of variables are investigated. These variables are television driven (supply, content and structure), technology driven (new media technologies such as satellite television and the Internet) and viewer driven (socio-cultural, personal and demographic factors). The study finds that there is a connection between these variables and the need for Afrikaans programmes among respondents. The supply, content and structure of Afrikaans programmes do not gratify respondents' needs. New media technologies broaden respondents' socio-cultural horizons, enabling them to comfortably watch English programmes. Amidst the increasing supply of overseas programmes in English, the need for Afrikaans programmes is diminishing / Communication Science / M. A. (Kommunikasiekunde)

Debiasi, Carlos Alberto 10 November 2014 (has links)
This work investigates elements of contemporary journalistic narrative present in television programming and discusses the hybrid character of communication technologies .

Melo, Paulo Victor Purificação 29 April 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this presente essay is to investigate the segment of State´s Legislative Televisions in Brazil, establishing as specific object of study the analysis of the technology offered to acess the schedule, models of management and the schedule profile of these broadcast TVs. The research focuses on the structure and organization of the TVs, extending them as a part of a complex public communication system which had its historic development imprinted by a minor complementary condition facing the brazilian State´s attempt to privilege the private initiative´s exploitation of the broadcasting service. The Legislative TVs in Brazil were created less than 20 years ago and have been one of the most important instruments used by the parliament in approximation and dialogue with society. It, furthermore, represents an improvement of the perspective of communication democracy´s systems, especially because it has distinct content in comparison to comercial media. The State´s Legislative TVs, specially mentioning the models of management, are also configured as space property of the Legislative Assembly Directors Table, where the guarantee of social participation determinant for the accountability and its conditions as vehicle of public communication is revealed as a necessary challenge. This aspect is intensified by the absence of a legislature to establish conditions for functionality, management and use of these TVs, either federal, state or municipal, becoming even more difficult to be supervised and controlled by society.

Not So Elementary: An Examination of Trends in a Century of Sherlock Holmes Adaptations

Camp, Nathan 05 1900 (has links)
This study examines changes over time in 40 different Sherlock Holmes films and 39 television series and movies spanning from 1900 to 2017. Quantitative observations were mixed with a qualitative examination. Perceptions of law enforcement became more positive over time, the types of crime did not vary, and representation of race and gender improved over time with incrementally positive changes in the representation of queer, mentally ill, and physically handicapped individuals. The exact nature of these trends is discussed. Additionally, the trends of different decades are explored and compared. Sherlock Holmes is mostly used as a vehicle for storytelling rather than for the salacious crimes that he solves, making the identification of perceptions of crime in different decades difficult. The reasons for why different Sherlock Holmes projects were created in different eras and for different purposes are discussed.
