Factors Affecting Air Entrainment of Hydraulic Jumps within Closed ConduitsMortensen, Joshua D. 01 December 2009 (has links)
While there has been a great deal of research on air entrainment at hydraulic jumps within closed conduits, very little of the research has specifically addressed size and temperature scale effects. Influences from jump location and changing length characteristics on air entrainment have also received little attention from past research. To determine the significance of size-scale effects of air entrained by hydraulic jumps in closed conduits, air flow measurements were taken in four different-sized circular pipe models with similar Froude numbers. Each of the pipe models sloped downward and created identical flow conditions that differed only in size. Additionally, specific measurements were taken in one of the pipe models with various water temperatures to identify any effects from changing fluid properties. To determine the significance of the effects of changed length characteristics on air demand, air flow measurements were taken with hydraulic jumps at multiple locations within a circular pipe with two different air release configurations at the end of the pipe. Results showed that air demand was not affected by the size of the model. All together, the data from four different pipe models show that size-scale effects of air entrained into hydraulic jumps within closed conduits are negligible. However, it was determined that air entrainment was significantly affected by the water temperature. Water at higher temperatures entrained much less air than water at lower temperatures. Hydraulic jump location results showed that for both configurations the percentage of air entrainment significantly increased as the hydraulic jump occurred near the point of air release downstream. As the jump occurred nearer to the end of the pipe, its length characteristics were shortened and air demand increased. However, jump location was only a significant factor until the jump occurred some distance upstream where the length characteristics were not affected. Upstream of this location the air demand was dependent only on the Froude number immediately upstream of the jump.

Bicycles are becoming always more popular as a cheap and healthy tool for urban travels. The concerns für crowded public transport means are changing the habits after the pandemic situation caused by Covid-19, encomaging people towards the use of bicycle.
As stated in literature, tyres play a large role in the handling ofbicycles . This is why it is necessary to characterize tyres so as to derive useful parameters for modeling. To this purpose, proper experimental methods have been implemented for bicycle tyres. A deepen knowledge of the phenomena occurring at tyre/road contact patch is indeed fundamental to ensure proper adherence and safety conditions, especiatly for vehicles as bicycles or motorcycles working with high camber angles.
This paper aims at enabling the future development of bicycle tyres, in order to improve the safety and the performances. Specifically, the focus is devoted to understand how the road temperature can impact on tyre performances, and therefore on bicycle handling.
After a brief section describing the methods and instruments used für this research activity, the results of an experimental campaign carried out on road racing tyre are presented and discussed.

In a test on testrig of wintertype tyre revealed remarkable differences with respect to the mechanical characteristics of other tyres tested at room temperature. This may suggest the important role played by temperature on bicycle tyres characteristics, thus affecting the tyre/road interaction.

In 1982, Israelachvili and Pashley reported the first measurements of a hitherto unknown attractive force between two mica surfaces hydrophobized in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) solutions. Follow-up experiments conducted by many investigators confirmed their results, while others suggested that the "hydrophobic force" is an artifact due to nanobubbles (or cavitation). Evidences for the latter included the discontinuities (or steps) in the force versus distance curves and the pancake-shaped nano-bubbles seen in atomic force microscopic (AFM) images. Recent measurements conducted in degassed water showed, however, smooth force versus distance curves, indicating that the hydrophobic force is not an artifact due to nanobubbles.1, 2
Still other investigators3, 4 suggested that the long-range attraction observed between hydrophobic surfaces is due to the correlation between the patches of adsorbed ionic surfactant and the patches of unoccupied surface. For this theory to work, it is necessary that the charged patches be laterally mobile to account for the strong attractive forces observed in experiment. In an effort to test this theory, AFM force measurements were conducted with gold substrates hydrophobized by self-assembly of alkanethiols and xanthates of different chain lengths. The results showed long-range attractions despite the fact that the hydrophobizing agents chemisorb on gold and, hence, the adsorption layer is immobile.
When the gold surfaces were hydrophobized in a 1 Ã 10-3 M thiol-in-ethanol solution for an extended period of time, the force curves exhibited steps. These results indicate that the long-range attractions are caused by the coalescence of bubbles, as was also reported by Ederth.5 The steps disappeared, however, when the species adsorbed on top of the chemisorbed monolayer were removed by solvent washing, or when the gold substrates were hydrophobized in a 1 Ã 10-5 M solution for a relatively short period of time.
AFM force measurements were also conducted between gold substrates coated with short-chain thiols and xanthates to obtain hydrophobic surfaces with water contact angles (ï ±) of less than 90o. Long-range attractions were still observed despite the fact that cavitation is thermodynamically not possible.
Having shown that hydrophobic force is not due to coalescence of pre-existing bubbles, cavitation, or correlation of charged patches, the next set of force measurements was conducted in ethanol-water mixtures. The attractive forces became weaker and shorter-ranged than in pure water and pure ethanol. According to the Derjaguin's approximation6, an attractive force arises from the decrease in the excess free energy (ï §f) of the thin film between two hydrophobic surfaces.7 Thus, the stronger hydrophobic forces observed in pure water and pure ethanol can be attributed to the stronger cohesive energy of the liquid due to stronger H-bonding. Further, the increase in hydrophobic force with decreasing separation between two hydrophobic surfaces indicates that the H-bonded structure becomes stronger in the vicinity of hydrophobic surfaces.
The force measurements conducted at different temperatures in the range of 10-40C showed that the hydrophobic attraction between macroscopic surfaces causes a decrease in film entropy (Sf), which confirms that the hydrophobic force is due to the structuring of water in the thin film between two hydrophobic surfaces. The results showed also that the hydrophobic interaction entails a reduction in the excess film enthalpy (Hf), which may be associated with the formation of partial (or full) clathrates formed in the vicinity of hydrophobic surfaces. The presence of the clathrates is supported by the recent finding that the density of water in the vicinity of hydrophobic surfaces is lower than in the bulk.8 / Ph. D.

A alface é a hortaliça folhosa mais consumida no Brasil. Seu cultivo vem sendo severamente afetado pelo fungo Thielaviopsis basicola, que ocasiona podridão radicular e subdesenvolvimento de plantas. Não existem maiores estudos sobre o controle desse patógeno nas condições brasileiras. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: a determinação da ocorrência de T. basicola em plantios comerciais de alface e outras folhosas do Estado de São Paulo, do efeito da temperatura sobre a patogenicidade in vitro dos isolados obtidos e a avaliação da viabilidade de seu controle através do emprego de cultivares de alface resistentes, de fungicidas e da solarização, com e sem incorporação de matéria orgânica. Quatorze isolados de T. basicola foram obtidos de raízes necróticas de alface, chicória e rúcula. O efeito da temperatura sobre a patogenicidade in vitro dos isolados foi determinado, inoculando-se sementes de alface semeadas em agar-água. Foram realizados dois ensaios. No primeiro, quatorze cultivares de alface foram inoculadas com o isolado L1, a 21 e 30ºC. No segundo, a cv. Elisa foi inoculada com os quatorze isolados de T. basicola, a 21 e 27ºC. O isolado L1 foi mais agressivo a 21ºC do que a 30ºC, ocasionando maiores severidade da doença e restrição do comprimento de plântulas em todas as cultivares. Todos os isolados causaram podridão radicular e reduziram o comprimento de plântulas a 21 e 27ºC, destacando-se o isolado A2 como o mais agressivo. De modo geral, os isolados foram mais agressivos a 27 que a 21ºC, exceto L1 e L2. A reação de cultivares de alface a três isolados de T. basicola foi avaliada in vivo. Primeiramente, treze cultivares foram confrontadas com o isolado L1 e, posteriormente, seis dessas cultivares foram inoculadas com os isolados A2 e CH. As cultivares do tipo lisa foram suscetíveis e as do tipo crespa, resistentes, exceto a cv. Verônica. Quanto às cultivares do tipo americana, houve variação na reação ao patógeno. O efeito de fungicidas sobre o crescimento micelial e a esporulação in vitro foi determinado para três isolados de T. basicola. Nove fungicidas foram testados para o isolado L1 e sete para os isolados A2 e CH, nas concentrações de 0; 0,1; 1, 10 e 100 ppm de ingrediente ativo. O fungicida carbendazim foi o mais efetivo. A eficiência de sete fungicidas foi avaliada no controle de T. basicola in vivo. Todos os produtos testados foram eficientes, destacando-se o tebuconazole e o triadimenol. O controle de T. basicola através da solarização, associada ou não à incorporação de 10 ton / ha de torta de mamona ou de cama de frango, também foi avaliado. A solarização do solo com e sem incorporação de matéria orgânica controlou efetivamente o patógeno. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos com a incorporação da torta de mamona seguida de solarização, que permitiu a produção de plantas com maiores comprimento e massa fresca e evitou o aparecimento de qualquer sintoma de necrose radicular. / Lettuce is the most used leafy vegetable in Brazil. Its crop is being severely affected by Thielaviopsis basicola, fungus which causes root rot and stunting in plants. There are no control studies about this pathogen for the brazillian conditions. This research aimed: to determine the T. basicola occurence in São Paulo State commercial lettuce and other leafy vegetables crops, the temperature effect on isolates pathogenicity in vitro and control viability evaluation by lettuce resistant varieties, fungicides and solarization with and without organic matter amendments. Fourteen T. basicola isolates were got from lettuce, chicory and arugula necrotic roots. Temperature effect on the isolates pathogenicity in vitro was determined in inoculated seeds sown on the surface of water agar medium. Two trials were carried out. In the first one, fourteen lettuce varieties were inoculated with L1 isolate at 21 and 30ºC. In the second, only cv. Elisa was inoculated with fourteen T. basicola isolates, at 21 and 27ºC. The isolate L1 was the most aggressive at 21ºC than 30ºC, causing higher disease severity and seedling length restriction of all varieties. All isolates induced root rot and reduced seedlings length at 21 and 27ºC, but A2 isolate was the most aggressive one. All isolates were more aggressive at 27 rather than 21ºC, except L1 and L2 isolates. Lettuce varieties reactions to three T. basicola isolates were evaluated in vivo. First about thirteen varieties were challenged with L1 isolate and later, six of them were inoculated with A2 and CH isolates. Butterhead types were susceptible and Grand Rapids types were resistant, except cv. Veronica. Iceberg type varieties varied in their reaction to pathogen. Fungicide effect on mycelial growth and sporulation in vitro was determined for three T. basicola isolates. Nine fungicides were tested for L1 isolate and seven for A2 and CH isolates, at concentrations of 0; 0,1; 1; 10 and 100 ppm of active ingredient. Carbendazim was the most effective. Seven fungicides efficacy was evaluated to control of T. basicola in vivo. All tested products were efficient, but tebuconazole and triadimenol were the best ones. The control of T. basicola through soil solarization with and without chicken litter and coarse castor bean meal amendments, at 10 ton / ha, also was evaluated. Soil solarization alone and combined with organic matter amendments were both effective ways to control the pathogen. The best results were got with incorporation of coarse castor bean meal followed by solarization, which allowed increase in fresh weight and length of plants, and avoided root rot symptoms.

Les aciers inoxydables austénitiques sont très utilisés dans l’industrie nucléaire comme structure interne. Ces structures se retrouvent en grande majorité dans la cuve du réacteur et, du fait de leur proximité avec les assemblages combustibles, sont soumis à de rudes conditions d’utilisation. Ces éléments sont donc exposés à des doses d’irradiation élevées et peuvent atteindre 100 dpa après 40 ans d’utilisation, à une température proche de 350°C. Ces conditions d’utilisation modifient la microstructure de l’acier et son comportement mécanique, ce qui entraîne une dégradation de leurs propriétés mécaniques et de leur résistance à la corrosion. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’établir à l’échelle atomique une loi de comportement décrivant le déplacement d’une dislocation coin dans une solution solide Fe-Ni10-Cr20, d’apporter une compréhension des mécanismes d’interaction entre une dislocation coin et une boucle de Frank et d’investiguer l’effet de la température, du générateur aléatoire d’alliage, de l’orientation et du diamètre de la boucle sur la contrainte mécanique. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, des simulations en dynamique moléculaire sont réalisées, basées sur potentiel FeNiCr récemment développé pour imiter le comportement de l’acier austénitique inoxydable. Les simulations sont réalisées en conditions statiques, à 300 K, 600 K et 900 K et les interactions effectuées pour des tailles de boucle de Frank de 2 nm et 10 nm. nous proposons une loi de comportement où sont incluses la température et la vitesse de déformation; l’interaction entre la dislocation coin et la boucle de Frank révèle trois types de mécanismes d’interactions : le cisaillement simple, le défautement et l’absorption de la boucle. L’absorption est le mécanisme le plus stable ; Les analyses des propriétés mécaniques résultantes ont montré que le mécanisme de défautement requiert la contrainte la plus élevée pour que la dislocation franchisse l’obstacle. D’autre part, contrairement aux études précédentes, le défautement de la surface de la boucle n’a lieu que lorsque celle-ci entre en contact avec la dislocation coin ; dans le cas de la boucle de Frank de 2 nm, la corrélation entre la probabilité du mécanisme d’interaction et la force moyenne de l’obstacle constitue des données utiles pour les simulations en Dynamique des Dislocations. Les observations des configurations résultantes de la boucle de Frank suite à l’interaction avec la dislocation permettent de justifier l’apparition de bandes claires observées au MET. Ce travail a été partiellement soutenu par la Commission européenne FP7 par le numéro de subvention 232612 dans le cadre du projet PERFORM 60. / Austenitic stainless steels are widely used in the nuclear industry as internals. These structures reside mainly in the reactor vessel and, due to their proximity with fuel assemblies, are subjected to severe operating conditions. These elements are exposed to high irradiation doses which can reach 100 dpa after 40 years of operating, at a temperature close to 350°C. These operating conditions affect the microstructure of steels and their mechanical behavior, which leads to the deterioration of their mechanical properties and their corrosion resistance. The objective of this PhD research work is to establish at the atomic scale a constitutive law describing the edge dislocation motion in a random Fe-Ni10-Cr20 solid solute solution, to bring a comprehensive understanding of the interaction mechanism between the edge dislocation and the Frank loops and to investigate the effect of temperature, alloying random generator, orientation and size of the Frank loop on the mechanical stress. To achieve these objectives, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted with a recently developed FeNiCr potential used to mimic the behavior of austenitic stainless steels. These simulations have been performed in static conditions as well as at 300 K, 600 K and 900 K and the interactions realized for loop sizes of 2nm and 10nm. A constitutive law taking into account the temperature and strain rate is proposed; the interaction between the edge dislocation and the Frank loop revealed 3 kinds of interaction mechanisms: simple shearing, unfaulting and absorption of the loop. Absorption is the most stable mechanism; the analyses of the resulting mechanical properties have shown that the unfaulting mechanism requires the highest stress to make the dislocation overcome the obstacle. On the other hand, contrary to previous studies, the unfaulting of the loop surface occurs only when the dislocation comes into contact with the edge dislocation; for the 2 nm Frank loop size, the coupling between the probability of the outcome of the reaction and the average strength of the obstacle constitutes useful data for Dislocation Dynamics simulations. The observations of the resulting Frank loop configurations following the interaction with the dislocation allow justifying the emergence of clear bands observed in TEM.
