Design Optimizations of LLC Resonant Converters with Planar Matrix Transformers

Prakash, Pranav Raj 12 1900 (has links)
LLC resonant converters have been a popular choice for DC-DC converters due to their high efficiency, high power density, and hold-up capability in power supplies for communication systems, datacenters, consumer electronics, and automobiles. With the rapid development of wide-bandgap devices and novel magnetic materials, the push for higher switching frequencies to achieve higher power densities at lower costs is gaining traction. To demonstrate high efficiency and high power density, the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) at Virginia Tech designed an 800W, 1MHz 400V/12V LLC converter for future datacenters, which could achieve a peak efficiency of 97.6% and a power density of 900 W/in3. However, with the ever-increasing demand for online services, the performance of power delivery must also be simultaneously improved to keep pace with the demand. The focus of this thesis is improving the performance of CPES’ previous 400V/12V LLC converter by investigating different aspects of its design and operation. Ultimately, design guidelines are proposed, and improvements are demonstrated to effectively achieve higher efficiency and higher power density than the previous CPES converter. Multiple aspects of the LLC converter’s design and structure are investigated to further improve its performance, and three main areas are the focus of this thesis. The output-side termination design of the planar transformer is investigated and modeled, and design guidelines for filter capacitor selection are provided for optimal efficiency. Next, the existing shielding technique for matrix transformers, which helps reduce common-mode (CM) noise without compromising on efficiency, is investigated for asymmetry and current-sharing issues, and modifications have been proposed to improve its efficiency. Thirdly, the LLC converter’s switching frequency is optimized to improve its performance over the previous CPES converter. Finally, the hardware results with the proposed improvements are demonstrated, and the converter’s performance is compared with the previous CPES converter as well as other recent proposed solutions. / M.S. / The electricity demand by datacenters has been growing exponentially over the past few decades, especially due to the boom of artificial intelligence in addition to other internet services. This has resulted in a requirement to continually improve the efficiencies of the power delivery from the grid, through the datacenter power architecture, and finally to the loads on the server racks. The overall datacenter power architecture has been improved over time to improve the total efficiency. However, the performance of each stage along the power architecture must be improved to keep in pace with the energy demand. The focus of this thesis is to improve the performance of the 400V/12V DC-DC stage for future datacenters. Previously, the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) at Virginia Tech developed a 1MHz 800W 400V/12V LLC converter with 97.6% peak efficiency and 900W/in3 power density. However, the performance of the converter must be further improved to stay ahead of the competition and keep in pace with the increasing energy demand. Multiple aspects of the LLC converter’s design and structure are investigated to further improve its performance, and three main areas are the focus of this thesis. Firstly, the high-frequency termination design, or how different components are interconnected and arranged, is studied, and a capacitance selection guideline is proposed to maximize the efficiency.

The Use of a Stress and Coping Model to Understand Women's Experiences with Abortion

Moscovis Denny, Christa A. 14 August 2001 (has links)
Six women participated in a qualitative study to understand women's experiences with abortion. The women ranged in age from 52 to 26, and were at least five years post-abortion. A questionnaire was developed using a stress and coping model as a guide to answer the following: relevant primary and reappraisal processes; problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies; resources; and personal and environmental constraints. The results give the women's individual experiences as well as the themes that were consistent for the participants. The women all appraised the situation of an unplanned pregnancy as stressful. All of the participants viewed having the child as a threat to their education, career, or relationship with family. Although all of the women thought some part of the procedure was more stressful than they had anticipated, all found ways to cope with differing levels of stress. The women saw their friends, family, ob-gyn physicians, priest, and clinic staff as resources during the experience. The women most often reported that religious beliefs constrained their abilities to cope. They also reported a lack of information about the abortion procedure and possible physical and emotional effects as environmental constraints. Overall, all but one participant would make the same decision, and all viewed themselves as coping well with a stressful life event. / Master of Science

Active Flight Path Control for an Induced Spin Flight Termination System

Shukla, Poorva Jahnukumar 12 September 2017 (has links)
In this thesis, we describe a method for controlling the cycle-averaged velocity direction of a fixed-wing aircraft in an unpowered, helical descent. While the aircraft propulsion system is disabled, either intentionally or due to a failure, the aerodynamic control surfaces (aileron, elevator, and rudder) are assumed to be functional. Our approach involves two steps: (i) establishing a stable, steady, helical motion for which the control surfaces are not fully deflected and (ii) modulating the aircraft control surfaces about their nominal positions to ``slant'' the helical flight path in a desired direction relative to the atmosphere, whether to attain a desired impact location, to counter a steady wind, or both. The effectiveness of the control law was evaluated in numerical simulations of a general transport model (GTM). / Master of Science

Predicting termination and continuation status in shelter programs using the Transtheoretical Model with Hispanic battered women.

Weisz, Adriana V. 08 1900 (has links)
This study tested the applicability of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change in predicting early termination, appropriate termination, and ongoing treatment of Hispanic battered women residing at domestic violence shelters. Self-efficacy, decisional balance, and acculturation were examined in relation to the applicability of this model with the Hispanic women population. One hundred and eight women residing in two shelters for survivors of domestic violence, located in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, were asked to provide information regarding the problems in their relationships, the pull and the strain of their relationship, their level of temptation to stay in the abusive relationship, and how confident they felt that they would not return to their abuser (The Process of Change in Abused Women Scales- PROCAWS). In addition, the women were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their level of acculturation. This study confirmed the stage of change profiles found in a population of battered women as well as in other clinical populations and the results suggest that this model is applicable to Hispanic populations. The results indicated that the women in this sample could be meaningfully grouped according to their level of involvement in different stages of change. Furthermore, this study provided support for the validity of this theory by finding significant relationships among the profiles of change and the intervening variables that moderate movement across the stages of change. The women in this study differed with regard to their level of temptation to stay in their relationships and the amount of cons they to making changes. The findings also confirmed that the Transtheoretical Model can be used to predict termination status from domestic violence shelter programs. Although there were no significant differences in termination status among the women with different stage of change profiles, a trend existed that women in earlier stages of change terminated earlier and women in later stages of change terminated appropriately. Overall, the results of this study provide evidence for the applicability of the Transtheoretical Model and the usefulness of the PROCAWS in identifying profiles of change that can potentially guide treatment interventions and predict early termination with the Hispanic population.

Abandono em Psicoterapia Psicanalítica : estudo qualitativo

Jung, Simone Isabel January 2013 (has links)
This thesis had as general objective to analyze the phenomenon of dropout in psychoanalytic psychotherapy (PP) through qualitative methodology. To do so, three articles were written identifying characteristics of beginning and end of treatment of adult patients who were classified by their psychotherapists as patients who dropped out the PP, in a service of attendance in the city of Porto Alegre/Brazil, whose main objective is the formation of specialists in PP. The Bardin’s method (1995) was used in all the studies to analyze the content of the initial interviews of treatment, which were found in the file of the attendance service, and of the post-treatment interviews accomplished by the authoress of the thesis. The first article presents the analysis of treatment of six women who dropped out the PP. Factors that came up in the beginning of the psychotherapy were: unclear objectives of the treatment, weak readiness to change, precocious signs of negative transference and resistance and absence of recognition about the own participation in the problems. Therapeutic gains, dissatisfaction and resistance during the therapeutic process seemed to be associated to the dropout. The second article reveals the findings of the treatments of five patients who dropped out the PP and other five who completed it. Patients who dropped out the PP presented in the beginning of the treatment: focalized objectives and expectations, weak disposition to change, decreased capacity for insight, negative perception of the previous treatments and meaningful manifestations of negative transference and resistance. On the other hand, patients who completed the PP had goals and expectations of psychotherapy related to wider aspects of life, were less resistant to begin the treatment, presented a bigger disposition to change, more positive transference and higher levels of perception and satisfaction concerning the previous treatment. During the treatment, patients who completed the PP were less resistant and were more satisfied about the psychotherapy, referred more effective benefits and reached a bigger capacity to continue working in psychological problems if compared to patients who dropped out the PP. And the third article shows the data found in treatments of patients who dropped out the PP in different moments of the therapy. Seven patients of medium time of dropout (MD - two to eleven months after the beginning of the psychotherapy) compared to seven patients of late time of dropout (LD - more than one year after the beginning) were identified as the ones who started the treatment by indication of others more than by their own, presenting more resistance, with expectations of more support, less positive transference, more depressive complains and negative experiences about the previous treatments. In the post-treatment interview they revealed more resistance during the process of psychotherapy. They dropped out the psychotherapy with minor capacity of insight, evaluated the treatment in a more negative way concerning its general aspects as well as the specific ones. Although distinctions have been observed, it is understood that the differentiation of the characteristics of the groups of MD and LD is tenuous and it needs more investigation. This thesis offers some hypothesis or explanations for the complex phenomenon of dropout of PP. It suggests that the decisions about initiate, dropping out, or completing the psychotherapy depend on multiple factors, such as: definition of marks and objectives established in partnership (patient/psychotherapist), disposition to undertake changes, capacity of insight which implies in recognition of the psychic condition and the participation of problems, resistance, transference and experience that were experienced in previous treatment. The results which were obtained in this thesis are exploratory and it is necessary to study more in this area.

Nájem bytu / Residential lease

Bernas, Petr January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with residential lease. Due to the limited scope of the thesis it was impossible to cover the topic in a more comprehensive manner. The aim of the thesis is to systematically analyse only some issues of legal regulation of the residential lease. The thesis discusses the interpretation of certain general issues of the residential lease and the termination of the residential lease, focusing on various ways of termination. The thesis deals with absolute termination of residential lease. The thesis focuses on selected provisions of Act No. 89/2012 Sb., the Civil Code, using the scientific literature, the thesis is also concerned with relevant practise of courts. In some cases, the thesis compares the current Civil Code with the previous legal regulation, Act No. 40/1964 Sb., the Civil Code, as amended. The thesis is divided into nine chapters, which are subdivided into subchapters. The first chapter deals with the basic definition of the lease, analysis of the concept of apartment and house, legal regulation of the residential lease and it briefly describes the differences between a lease and other related contracts. The second chapter provides an overview of the provisions of the Civil Code relating to termination of the residential lease and outlines possible ways of termination of...

La régulation de l’expression génique peut passer par un mécanisme de terminaison prémature de la transcription dépendant de la RNase III chez Saccharomyces cerevisiae / Gene expression can be regulated with a premature termination mechanism targeting ongoing transcription dependent on the RNase III in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Malenfant, Francis January 2017 (has links)
Abstract : Gene expression is a highly regulated coordination of processes with the objective of producing functional proteins from the DNA code of the cell. To control the amount of proteins produced, cells use messenger RNAs as an intermediate to permit genomic information to move across the cell. To assure the quality of this signal and to control the level of gene expression, many RNA degradation mechanisms coordinate together according to their own specificities. Scientific literature has demonstrated long ago the existing interactions between RNA synthesis and RNA degradation pathways and how they closely work together to achieve viable gene expression regulation. One of those mechanisms induces transcription termination in the 3’ untranscribed region of coding genes initiated with a RNA cleavage from a ribonuclease III. In this master thesis, we show that a similar RNase III dependent mechanism can induce premature transcription termination inside the coding sequence. This mechanism seems promotor and terminator independent and depends mostly on the sequence coding for a stem-loop structure in the mRNA. Different sequences can induce a stem-loop structure recognizable by RNase III. However, there are some functional differences between stem-loop structures and not all of them can induce premature transcription termination. Since this mechanism must not happen every time and somehow must be inducible to permit gene expression when needed, this could possibly lead to a new gene regulation model.
