Towards more effective testing of communications-critical large scale systems

Nabulsi, Mohammad January 2014 (has links)
None of today’s large scale systems could function without the reliable availability of a varied range of network communications capabilities. Whilst software, hardware and communications technologies have been advancing throughout the past two decades, the methods commonly used by industry for testing large scale systems which incorporate critical communications interfaces have not kept pace. This thesis argues for the need for a specifically tailored framework to achieve effective testing of communications-critical large scale systems (CCLSS). The thesis initially discusses how generic test approaches are leading to inefficient and costly test activities in industry. The thesis then presents the form and features of an alternative CCLSS domain-specific test framework, develops its ideas further into a detailed and structured test approach for one of its layers, and then provides a detailed example of how this framework can be applied using a real-life case study. The thesis concludes with a qualitative as well a simulation-based evaluation of the framework’s benefits observed during the case study and an evaluation by expert external participants considering whether similar benefits can be realised if the framework is adopted for the testing of other comparable systems. Requirements data from a second CCLSS is included in the evaluation by external participants as a second smaller case study.

A Framework for Effective Test Charter Design for Exploratory Testing

Garigapati, Ratna Pranathi January 2016 (has links)
Context. Colossal systems that are evolving are primarily system of systems (SOS). The system of systems are characteristic of functionally independent subsystems. These subsystems exhibit heterogeneity in terms of software or hardware. Each subsystem may reflect heterogeneity in dimensions such as the system complexity, system configuration, programming language and platforms, etc. Exploratory testing (ET) is perceived to be the best for testing such systems. An enhancement to exploratory testing is the session-based test management (SBTM) where several activities form a part of each session. These activities are mainly dependent on tester and the test charter of that session. There is lack of information in existing literature regarding a standard framework to design test charters for exploratory testing which forms the main area of focus of this thesis research. Objectives. Firstly, to investigate the design of test charters in general. Secondly, to find out the factors influencing the design of test charters. Lastly, to develop a framework to design effective test charters in SOS context. Methods. A mixed method approach that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative research methods is used. This research includes the quantitative leg of the online survey along with the interviews and literature review that are qualitative in nature. Literature review has been chosen to investigate the test charter design in general. Besides, interviews and online surveys  have been used to research regarding the factors and test charter framework.  Snowball sampling method and convenience sampling method have been used to sample the research data. Moreover, thematic analysis method is used for analyzing the qualitative data while descriptive statistics is used for quantitative data analysis. Results. The design aspects of test charter are documented, the factors influencing test charter design and the framework for effective test charter design for exploratory testing are presented. Conclusions. The thesis objectives are fulfilled. The findings on how the test charters are generally designed have helped in gaining insight on the primary elements that constitute a test charter design. Further, investigating the factors influencing the test charter design has helped in knowing the main elements affecting the test charter design. Finally, the main contribution of this thesis, the developed flexible test charter framework for exploratory testing encapsulates variables that should be considered, controlled or varied systematically during the course of testing. It is deemed to act as a guideline for practitioners for effective test charter design.

An evaluation of test processes in an agile environment

Eshtiagh, Peyman January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to improve the reliability and quality of new requested functionality, and existing modules, at Fortum HR System Solutions. This was conducted through an evaluation of the test processes by implementing principles of Software Testing and Test Management. For the study to successfully improve the testing performed at HR System Solutions, existing test processes were analyzed. The analysis was conducted by evaluating the current test processes using theoretical test evaluation styles called maturity models. The methodology of choice was the Testing Maturity Model (TMM), which was adapted to the nature of HR System Solutions requirements, experience and needs. The evaluation used qualitative methods together with pedagogical principles to conduct interviews and workshops to consolidate the theoretical evaluation. Interviews and workshops were conducted within the team of HR System Solutions, where all members of them team contributed to the thesis at some point. An external interview also took place for comparative study. Results of the evaluation, interviews and workshop were compiled and analyzed accordingly. With the analyzed results in place, flaws in the testing processes were apparent. A generalization of the flaws led to the conclusion in the form of a suggestion. The conclusive suggestion was for Fortum HR System Solutions to establish a test committee/group role within the team. Considering the current economical and organizational situation this job role would be a divided job role appointed to current members of the HR System Solutions team. The research creates a walkthrough on a potential method on understanding inefficiencies within testing processes of a company and providing a cause-based solution.

Software Testing Platform Development and Implementation / Vývoj a implementace testovací platformy

Burian, Vojtěch January 2012 (has links)
The quality is probably the most significant property of a successful software product. As experience with many software projects has already shown, leaving out testing and quality management from software development process can result in vast and critical customer issues, which usually invoke additional expenses for the software production company. In the course of time, software testing as a discipline has therefore seized an important position among other software development activities. And due to the fact that the software, thanks to rising customer demands and growing competing products portfolio, is getting more complex, the more advanced software testing procedures need to be implemented. Test strategy and iteration planning, implementation of multiple test types into the test suite, test automation, evaluation, administration and maintenance: these activities are commonly required within larger software development projects. Formalized software testing is, nevertheless, being introduced also to projects using agile management techniques which, by management decision or target user industry, are supposed to deliver products of highest quality. This initiates the high focus on the software testing discipline. The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a new system of software testing within a real project in the CertiCon a.s. company, for which software development is the main business activity. Current issues and gaps for possible improvement, gathered both by project management and the author himself, are analyzed in the first major part of this work and transformed into testing system requirements, which should cover both process changes as well as implementation/development of needed software supporting the process. The second part of thesis is covering the design of the new software testing system, focusing mainly on the area of test management and selection of appropriate software management tool. The final part of the thesis is aimed at implementation of the designed solution within a real organization environment and evaluates its benefits against the previously set requirements.

Test management in a PLM system context

González Corona, Alicia, Melle, Daniel January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this final project work is to explore how tests are managed during the development of mechatronic products at a manufacturing company. This study aims to develop an information model and a process model that can be used in a PLM system. The research method used is a case study at Husqvarna Group. The different test departments in the Huskvarna site are studied. For that, two rounds of semistructured interviews and document studies are conducted to collect primary and secondary data. For each round, six interviews are conducted with experienced employees and then, a verification meeting is held. During the qualitative analysis, different keywords are highlighted and displayed in an activity and class diagram to represent the as-is test management process at the case company. Later, it is compared to the literature, and a proposal is made based on the results.
