In dieser Studie wurde der Einfluss von anabol-androgenen Steroiden (AAS) wie Testosteron auf die Angiogenese im peripubertären Hengsthoden untersucht. Sieben von 14 Junghengsten erhielten Durateston® und wurden vier [n=3; Versuchsgruppe 1 (VG1)] bzw. zwölf [n=4; Versuchsgruppe 2 (VG2)] Wochen nach der letzten Applikation kastriert, während die übrigen sieben Tiere ohne eine Behandlung in dem gleichen Zeitraum kastriert wurden. Im Rahmen der morphometrischen Untersuchung konnte ein Anstieg der Volumendichte und der Numerischen Dichte bezüglich der Blutgefäße in der Versuchsgruppe festgestellt werden, während die Fläche der Blutgefäßanschnitte in den Kapillaren der Versuchsgruppe kleiner ist als bei den Tieren in der Kontrollgruppe. Die erhöhte Angiopietin2- und transforming growth factor alpha-Expression in der VG1 könnte möglicherweise für diese morphometrischen Be-funde verantwortlich sein. Die Blutgefäße der Versuchsgruppen zeigen, möglicherweise stimuliert durch Testoste-ron, eine höhere vascular endothelial growth factor-receptor2-Expression als die der Kontrollgruppe. Aufgrund der signifikanten Abnahme der morphometrischen Parameter von der VG1 zu der VG2 handelt es sich vermutlich um einen temporären Effekt.

Sexual selection theory tries to explain evolution of apparently useless traits which mainly developed in males of numerous species. One such trait is also rich and vibrant coloration, typical for many of the bird species. These traits are difficult to be falsified, and therefore they honestly signal quality of the individual. Carotenoid coloration reflects the health condition and melanin coloration the social status, even though this traditional division might not be as strict according to the latest studies. Apart from these ways of maintaining honesty, recent studies are focusing more also on the effect of hormones, mainly two steroids: male sexual hormone - testosterone -, and the "stress" hormone - corticosterone. Both hormones could positively influence male's sexual traits such as ornamental coloration. On the other hand, elevated levels of these hormones possess risk to the organism (higher energetic expenditure, chronic stress), therefore also might potentially become costly. Using photographs of birds in standardized conditions as well as spectrophotometry I analyzed the plumage coloration of males of the Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella). Effect of Acute Alcohol Ingestion on Resistance Exercise Induced mTORC1 Signaling in Human MuscleDuplanty, Anthony A. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to further elucidate the effects post-exercise alcohol ingestion. This project had many novel aspects including using a resistance exercise (RE) only exercise design and the inclusion of women. To our knowledge, we are the first to investigate the effect of post-RE alcohol ingestion in women. In the first chapter of this project, information on the prevalence of alcohol use and the importance of skeletal muscle as a dynamic and metabolic tissue was provided. In chapter two, the effects of post-RE alcohol ingestion in men and women are detailed. The major findings of this study was that although RE elicited similar mTORC1 signaling both in men and in women, alcohol ingestion appeared to only attenuate RE-induced phosphorylation of the mTORC1 signaling pathway in men. The third chapter focused on examining the effects of post-RE alcohol ingestion on acute testosterone bioavailability. The primary findings of this study was that alcohol substantially elevated serum total and free testosterone concentrations during recovery from a bout of resistance exercise. The fourth chapter detailed factors that contribute to bone density in men. The major findings of this study was that young adult male long-distance runners who participated in resistance training at least once per week had greater bone mineral density than their non-resistance trained and non-exercise trained peers.

The aim of this study was to test the adequacy of measuring jealousy reaction in adolescent boys by way of changes in salivary testosterone level and finding their associations with some individual characteristics mentioned by researchers. For the purpose of measuring basal testosterone level and changes in this hormone level during the competition for a mate which simulated the internet mating and changes in this hormone after being informed of their failure in this competition, the boys who participated in our study provided three salivary samples. Cytokine and hormone concentrations can be linked to the manipulation of training variables and to subsequent alterations in performance. Subjects: Nine D-1 collegiate throwers and 4 control subjects participated in this preliminary and exploratory report. Methods: Hormone (testosterone (T) and cortisol (C)) and adipokine (adiponectin, leptin, and resistin) measurements were taken at weeks 1, 7, and 11 for the throwers and weeks 1 and 11 for the control group. The throwers participated in an 11-week periodized resistance training and throws program during the fall preparatory period. Volume load was recorded throughout the study. Results: Hormone values did not exhibit statistically significant changes across time; however, there were notable changes for C, the testosterone to cortisol ratio (T:C), and adiponectin. Conclusions: T:C was increased as volume load decreased, and adiponectin increased in concert with decreases in C and increases in the T:C, possibly suggesting a lesser degree of obesity-related inflammation and a higher degree of “fitness” and preparedness.

Liquid chromatography, coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, presents a powerful tool for the quantification of the sex steroid hormones 17-β estradiol, progesterone and testosterone from biological matrices. The importance of accurate quantification with these hormones, even at endogenous levels, has evolved with our understanding of the role these regulators play in human development, fertility and disease risk and manifestation. Routine monitoring of these analytes can be accomplished by immunoassay techniques, which face limitations on specificity and sensitivity, or using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. LC–MS/MS is growing in capability and acceptance for clinically relevant quantification of sex steroid hormones in biological matrices and is able to overcome many of the limitations of immunoassays. Analyte specificity has improved through the use of novel derivatizing agents, and sensitivity has been refined through the use of high-resolution chromatography and mass spectrometric technology. This review highlights these innovations, among others, in LC–MS/MS steroid hormone analysis captured in the literature over the last decade.
