A text to speech synthesis system for Maltese

The subject of this thesis covers a considerably varied multidisciplinary area which needs to be addressed to be able to achieve a text-to-speech synthesis system of high quality, in any language. This is the first time that such a system has been built for Maltese, and therefore, there was the additional problem of no computerised sources or corpora. However many problems and much of the system designs are common to all languages. This thesis focuses on two general problems. The first is that of automatic labelling of phonemic data, since this is crucial for the setting up of Maltese speech corpora, which in turn can be used to improve the system. A novel way of achieving such automatic segmentation was investigated. This uses a mixed parameter model with maximum likelihood training of the first derivative of the features across a set of phonetic class boundaries. It was found that this gives good results even for continuous speech provided that a phonemic labelling of the text is available. A second general problem is that of segment concatenation, since the end and beginning of subsequent diphones can have mismatches in amplitude, frequency, phase and spectral envelope. The use of-intermediate frames, build up from the last and first frames of two concatenated diphones, to achieve a smoother continuity was analysed. The analysis was done both in time and in frequency. The use of wavelet theory for the separation of the spectral envelope from the excitation was also investigated. The linguistic system modules have been built for this thesis. In particular a rule based grapheme to phoneme conversion system that is serial and not hierarchical was developed. The morphological analysis required the design of a system which allowed two dissimilar lexical structures, (semitic and romance) to be integrated into one overall morphological analyser. Appendices at the back are included with detailed rules of the linguistic modules developed. The present system, while giving satisfactory intelligibility, with capability of modifying duration, does not include as yet a prosodic module.

Some Aspects of Text-To-Speech Conversion by Rules

<p> A critical survey of the important features and characteristics of some existing Text-to-Speech Conversion (TSC) system by rules is given. The necessary algorithms, not available for these systems in the literature, have been formulated providing the basic philosophies underlying these systems. A new algorithm TESCON for a TSC system by rules is developed without implementation details. TESCON is primarily concerned with the preprocessing and linguistic analysis of an input text in English orthography. For the first time, the use of function-content word concepts is fully utilized to identify the potential head-words in phrases. Stress, duration modification and pause insertions are suggested as part of the rule schemes. Intelligibility enhancement of synthetic speech in noise

Speech technology can facilitate human-machine interaction and create new communication interfaces. Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems provide speech output for dialogue, notification and reading applications as well as personalized voices for people that have lost the use of their own. TTS systems are built to produce synthetic voices that should sound as natural, expressive and intelligible as possible and if necessary be similar to a particular speaker. Although naturalness is an important requirement, providing the correct information in adverse conditions can be crucial to certain applications. Speech that adapts or reacts to different listening conditions can in turn be more expressive and natural. In this work we focus on enhancing the intelligibility of TTS voices in additive noise. For that we adopt the statistical parametric paradigm for TTS in the shape of a hidden Markov model (HMM-) based speech synthesis system that allows for flexible enhancement strategies. Little is known about which human speech production mechanisms actually increase intelligibility in noise and how the choice of mechanism relates to noise type, so we approached the problem from another perspective: using mathematical models for hearing speech in noise. To find which models are better at predicting intelligibility of TTS in noise we performed listening evaluations to collect subjective intelligibility scores which we then compared to the models’ predictions. In these evaluations we observed that modifications performed on the spectral envelope of speech can increase intelligibility significantly, particularly if the strength of the modification depends on the noise and its level. We used these findings to inform the decision of which of the models to use when automatically modifying the spectral envelope of the speech according to the noise. We devised two methods, both involving cepstral coefficient modifications. The first was applied during extraction while training the acoustic models and the other when generating a voice using pre-trained TTS models. The latter has the advantage of being able to address fluctuating noise. To increase intelligibility of synthetic speech at generation time we proposed a method for Mel cepstral coefficient modification based on the glimpse proportion measure, the most promising of the models of speech intelligibility that we evaluated. An extensive series of listening experiments demonstrated that this method brings significant intelligibility gains to TTS voices while not requiring additional recordings of clear or Lombard speech. To further improve intelligibility we combined our method with noise-independent enhancement approaches based on the acoustics of highly intelligible speech. This combined solution was as effective for stationary noise as for the challenging competing speaker scenario, obtaining up to 4dB of equivalent intensity gain. Finally, we proposed an extension to the speech enhancement paradigm to account for not only energetic masking of signals but also for linguistic confusability of words in sentences. We found that word level confusability, a challenging value to predict, can be used as an additional prior to increase intelligibility even for simple enhancement methods like energy reallocation between words. These findings motivate further research into solutions that can tackle the effect of energetic masking on the auditory system as well as on higher levels of processing.

Text-to-Speech Synthesis Using Found Data for Low-Resource Languages

Text-to-speech synthesis is a key component of interactive, speech-based systems. Typically, building a high-quality voice requires collecting dozens of hours of speech from a single professional speaker in an anechoic chamber with a high-quality microphone. There are about 7,000 languages spoken in the world, and most do not enjoy the speech research attention historically paid to such languages as English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Japanese. Speakers of these so-called "low-resource languages" therefore do not equally benefit from these technological advances. While it takes a great deal of time and resources to collect a traditional text-to-speech corpus for a given language, we may instead be able to make use of various sources of "found'' data which may be available. In particular, sources such as radio broadcast news and ASR corpora are available for many languages. While this kind of data does not exactly match what one would collect for a more standard TTS corpus, it may nevertheless contain parts which are usable for producing natural and intelligible parametric TTS voices. In the first part of this thesis, we examine various types of found speech data in comparison with data collected for TTS, in terms of a variety of acoustic and prosodic features. We find that radio broadcast news in particular is a good match. Audiobooks may also be a good match despite their largely more expressive style, and certain speakers in conversational and read ASR corpora also resemble TTS speakers in their manner of speaking and thus their data may be usable for training TTS voices. In the rest of the thesis, we conduct a variety of experiments in training voices on non-traditional sources of data, such as ASR data, radio broadcast news, and audiobooks. We aim to discover which methods produce the most intelligible and natural-sounding voices, focusing on three main approaches: 1) Training data subset selection. In noisy, heterogeneous data sources, we may wish to locate subsets of the data that are well-suited for building voices, based on acoustic and prosodic features that are known to correspond with TTS-style speech, while excluding utterances that introduce noise or other artifacts. We find that choosing subsets of speakers for training data can result in voices that are more intelligible. 2) Augmenting the frontend feature set with new features. In cleaner sources of found data, we may wish to train voices on all of the data, but we may get improvements in naturalness by including acoustic and prosodic features at the frontend and synthesizing in a manner that better matches the TTS style. We find that this approach is promising for creating more natural-sounding voices, regardless of the underlying acoustic model. 3) Adaptation. Another way to make use of high-quality data while also including informative acoustic and prosodic features is to adapt to subsets, rather than to select and train only on subsets. We also experiment with training on mixed high- and low-quality data, and adapting towards the high-quality set, which produces more intelligible voices than training on either type of data by itself. We hope that our findings may serve as guidelines for anyone wishing to build their own TTS voice using non-traditional sources of found data.

Using Linguistic Features to Improve Prosody for Text-to-Speech

This thesis focuses on the problem of using text-to-speech (TTS) to synthesize speech with natural-sounding prosody. I propose a two-step process for approaching this problem. In the first step, I train text-based models to predict the locations of phrase boundaries and pitch accents in an utterance. Because these models use only text features, they can be used to predict the locations of prosodic events in novel utterances. In the second step, I incorporate these prosodic events into a text-to-speech pipeline in order to produce prosodically appropriate speech. I trained models for predicting phrase boundaries and pitch accents on utterances from a corpus of radio news data. I found that the strongest models used a large variety of features, including syntactic features, lexical features, word embeddings, and co-reference features. In particular, using a large variety of syntactic features improved performance on both tasks. These models also performed well when tested on a different corpus of news data. I then trained similar models on two conversational corpora: one a corpus of task-oriented dialogs and one a corpus of open-ended conversations. I again found that I could train strong models by using a wide variety of linguistic features, although performance dropped slightly in cross-corpus applications, and performance was very poor in cross-genre applications. For conversational speech, syntactic features continued to be helpful for both tasks. Additionally, word embedding features were particularly helpful in the conversational domain. Interestingly, while it is generally believed that given information (i.e., terms that have recently been referenced) is often de-accented, for all three corpora, I found that including co-reference features only slightly improved the pitch accent detection model. I then trained a TTS system on the same radio news corpus using Merlin, an open source DNN-based toolkit for TTS. As Merlin includes a linguistic feature extraction step before training, I added two additional features: one for phrase boundaries (distinguishing between sentence boundaries and mid-sentence phrase boundaries) and one for pitch accents. The locations of all breaks and accents for all test and training data were determined using the text-based prosody prediction models. I found that the pipeline using these new features produced speech that slightly outperformed the baseline on objective metrics such as mel-cepstral distortion (MCD) and was greatly preferred by listeners in a subjective listening test. Finally, I trained an end-to-end TTS system on data that included phrase boundaries. The model was trained on a corpus of read speech, with the locations of phrase boundaries predicted based on acoustic features, and tested on radio news stories, with phrase boundaries predicted using the text-based model. I found that including phrase boundaries lowered MCD between the synthesized speech and the original radio broadcast, as compared to the baseline, but the results of a listening test were inconclusive.

Text-to-Speech Systems: Learner Perceptions of its Use as a Tool in the Language Classroom

Text-to-speech (TTS) systems are ubiquitous. From Siri to Alexa to customer service phone call options, listening in a real-world context requires language learners to interact with TTS. Traditionally, language learners report difficulty when listening due to various reasons including genre, text, task, speaker characteristics, and environmental factors. This naturally leads to the question: how do learners perceive TTS in instructional contexts? Since TTS allows controls on speaker characteristics (e.g. gender, regional variety, speed, etc.) the variety of materials that could be created--especially in contexts in which native speakers are difficult or expensive to find--makes this an attractive option. However, the effectiveness of TTS, namely, intelligibility, expressiveness, and naturalness, might be questioned for those instances in which the listening is more empathic than informational. In this study, we examined participants' comprehension of the factual details and speaker emotion as well as collected their opinions towards TTS systems for language learning. This study took place in an intensive English Program (IEP) with an academic focus at a large university in the United States. The participants had ACTFL proficiency levels ranging from Novice High to Advance Low. The participants were divided into two groups and through a counterbalanced design, were given a listening assessment in which half of the listening passages were recorded by voice actors, and other half were generated by the TTS system. After the assessment, the participants were given a survey that inquired their opinion towards TTS systems as learning tools. We did not find significant relationships between the voice delivery and participants' comprehension of details and speakers' emotions. Furthermore, more than half of the participants held positive views to using TTS systems as learning tools; thus, this study suggested the use of TTS systems when applicable.

HMM-based Vietnamese Text-To-Speech : Prosodic Phrasing Modeling, Corpus Design System Design, and Evaluation / Text-To-Speech à base de HMM (Hidden Markov Model) pour le vietnamien : modélisation de la segmentation prosodique, la conception du corpus, la conception du système, et l’évaluation perceptive

L’objectif de cette thèse est de concevoir et de construire, un système Text-To-Speech (TTS) haute qualité à base de HMM (Hidden Markov Model) pour le vietnamien, une langue tonale. Le système est appelé VTED (Vietnamese TExt-to-speech Development system). Au vu de la grande importance de tons lexicaux, un tonophone” – un allophones dans un contexte tonal – a été proposé comme nouvelle unité de la parole dans notre système de TTS. Un nouveau corpus d’entraînement, VDTS (Vietnamese Di-Tonophone Speech corpus), a été conçu à partir d’un grand texte brut pour une couverture de 100% de di-phones tonalisés (di-tonophones) en utilisant l’algorithme glouton. Un total d’environ 4000 phrases ont été enregistrées et pré-traitées comme corpus d’apprentissage de VTED.Dans la synthèse de la parole sur la base de HMM, bien que la durée de pause puisse être modélisée comme un phonème, l’apparition de pauses ne peut pas être prédite par HMM. Les niveaux de phrasé ne peuvent pas être complètement modélisés avec des caractéristiques de base. Cette recherche vise à obtenir un découpage automatique en groupes intonatifs au moyen des seuls indices de durée. Des blocs syntaxiques constitués de phrases syntaxiques avec un nombre borné de syllabes (n), ont été proposés pour prévoir allongement final (n = 6) et pause apparente (n = 10). Des améliorations pour allongement final ont été effectuées par des stratégies de regroupement des blocs syntaxiques simples. La qualité du modèle prédictive J48-arbre-décision pour l’apparence de pause à l’aide de blocs syntaxiques, combinée avec lien syntaxique et POS (Part-Of-Speech) dispose atteint un F-score de 81,4 % (Précision = 87,6 %, Recall = 75,9 %), beaucoup mieux que le modèle avec seulement POS (F-score=43,6%) ou un lien syntaxique (F-score=52,6%).L’architecture du système a été proposée sur la base de l’architecture HTS avec une extension d’une partie traitement du langage naturel pour le Vietnamien. L’apparence de pause a été prédit par le modèle proposé. Les caractéristiques contextuelles incluent les caractéristiques d’identité de “tonophones”, les caractéristiques de localisation, les caractéristiques liées à la tonalité, et les caractéristiques prosodiques (POS, allongement final, niveaux de rupture). Mary TTS a été choisi comme plateforme pour la mise en oeuvre de VTED. Dans le test MOS (Mean Opinion Score), le premier VTED, appris avec les anciens corpus et des fonctions de base, était plutôt bonne, 0,81 (sur une échelle MOS 5 points) plus élevé que le précédent système – HoaSung (lequel utilise la sélection de l’unité non-uniforme avec le même corpus) ; mais toujours 1,2-1,5 point de moins que le discours naturel. La qualité finale de VTED, avec le nouveau corpus et le modèle de phrasé prosodique, progresse d’environ 1,04 par rapport au premier VTED, et son écart avec le langage naturel a été nettement réduit. Dans le test d’intelligibilité, le VTED final a reçu un bon taux élevé de 95,4%, seulement 2,6% de moins que le discours naturel, et 18% plus élevé que le premier. Le taux d’erreur du premier VTED dans le test d’intelligibilité générale avec le carré latin test d’environ 6-12% plus élevé que le langage naturel selon des niveaux de syllabe, de ton ou par phonème. Le résultat final ne s’écarte de la parole naturelle que de 0,4-1,4%. / The thesis objective is to design and build a high quality Hidden Markov Model (HMM-)based Text-To-Speech (TTS) system for Vietnamese – a tonal language. The system is called VTED (Vietnamese TExt-tospeech Development system). In view of the great importance of lexical tones, a “tonophone” – an allophone in tonal context – was proposed as a new speech unit in our TTS system. A new training corpus, VDTS (Vietnamese Di-Tonophone Speech corpus), was designed for 100% coverage of di-phones in tonal contexts (i.e. di-tonophones) using the greedy algorithm from a huge raw text. A total of about 4,000 sentences of VDTS were recorded and pre-processed as a training corpus of VTED.In the HMM-based speech synthesis, although pause duration can be modeled as a phoneme, the appearanceof pauses cannot be predicted by HMMs. Lower phrasing levels above words may not be completely modeled with basic features. This research aimed at automatic prosodic phrasing for Vietnamese TTS using durational clues alone as it appeared too difficult to disentangle intonation from lexical tones. Syntactic blocks, i.e. syntactic phrases with a bounded number of syllables (n), were proposed for predicting final lengthening (n = 6) and pause appearance (n = 10). Improvements for final lengthening were done by some strategies of grouping single syntactic blocks. The quality of the predictive J48-decision-tree model for pause appearance using syntactic blocks combining with syntactic link and POS (Part-Of-Speech) features reached F-score of 81.4% Precision=87.6%, Recall=75.9%), much better than that of the model with only POS (F-score=43.6%)or syntactic link (F-score=52.6%) alone.The architecture of the system was proposed on the basis of the core architecture of HTS with an extension of a Natural Language Processing part for Vietnamese. Pause appearance was predicted by the proposed model. Contextual feature set included phone identity features, locational features, tone-related features, and prosodic features (i.e. POS, final lengthening, break levels). Mary TTS was chosen as a platform for implementing VTED. In the MOS (Mean Opinion Score) test, the first VTED, trained with the old corpus and basic features, was rather good, 0.81 (on a 5 point MOS scale) higher than the previous system – HoaSung (using the non-uniform unit selection with the same training corpus); but still 1.2-1.5 point lower than the natural speech. The quality of the final VTED, trained with the new corpus and prosodic phrasing model, progressed by about 1.04 compared to the first VTED, and its gap with the natural speech was much lessened. In the tone intelligibility test, the final VTED received a high correct rate of 95.4%, only 2.6% lower than the natural speech, and 18% higher than the initial one. The error rate of the first VTED in the intelligibility test with the Latin square design was about 6-12% higher than the natural speech depending on syllable, tone or phone levels. The final one diverged about only 0.4-1.4% from the natural speech.

Ένα TTS (Τext-To-Speech) σύστημα μετατρέπει ένα οποιοδήποτε κείμενο στην αντιστοιχούσα ομιλία, η οποία έχει φυσικά χαρακτηριστικά. Το ΤΤS αποτελείται από δύο βαθμίδες, τη βαθμίδα Επεξεργασίας Φυσικής Γλώσσας (ΕΦΓ) και τη βαθμίδα Ψηφιακής Επεξεργασίας Σήματος (ΨΕΣ). Η βαθμίδα ΕΦΓ είναι υπεύθυνη για την σωστή ανάλυση του κειμένου εισόδου σε φωνήματα και το καθορισμό των επιθυμητών προσωδιακών χαρακτηριστικών, όπως το pitch, η διάρκεια και η ένταση του κάθε φωνήματος. Η βαθμίδα ΨΕΣ αναλαμβάνει να συνθέσει την ομιλία με τα επιθυμητά προσωδιακά χαρακτηρίστηκα, τα οποία έδωσε η βαθμίδα ΕΦΓ. A TTS consists of two modules, the Natural Language Processing (NLP) module and the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module. The NLP module analyses the input text and supplies the DSP module with the appropriate phonemes and prosodic modifications, with concern to pitch, duration and volume of each phoneme. Then the DSP module synthesizes speech with the target prosody, using speech analysis-synthesis algorithms such as HNM. HNM (Harmonic plus Noise Model) algorithm models speech signal as the sum two parts, the harmonic part and the noise part.
