Benevolent vs. Hostile Sexism Impact on Work Performance for Women in TurkeyBonneau-Kaya, Crystal M. 01 May 2010 (has links)
All studies to date that have assessed the direct impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism on performance outcomes have done so in the context of a Western society. Because of this void in the literature, it remained unknown how living in a low egalitarian and/or non-Western society may impact women's experiences of sexism. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in the literature. This study investigates the impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism on women in four Turkish textile factories. 210 Turkish female textile factory workers were randomly assigned to the benevolent sexism, hostile sexism, or control condition. Performance and level of gender identification were measured. The results of this study indicated that while participants were impacted by sexism, the impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism resulted in different outcomes than for women in higher egalitarian Western Societies.

A history of the South African textile industry : the pioneering phase, 1820-1948.McDowell, James Carol. January 2000 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to bring together scattered information about the South African textile industry in an endeavour to give its growth some semblance of order up to 1948. The thesis commences by looking at the early colonial period, from the arrival of the 1820 Settlers and the first mill they established. As wool and cotton are basic commodities in the textile industry, these are dealt with from the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck in 1652, as is the colonial economy. The development of the industry is tabled , in chronological order, from 1822 covering where mills were sited and their founders. Two chapters are devoted to the leading pioneers in the industry - Harris, Mauerberger, Beier and Frame. The position of trade unions and the role of the state in the industry are looked at, subsequently. The thesis concludes with an assessment of the industry up to 1948. The question is posed as to the future of the textile industry in the South African economy. / Thesis (M.Com.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2000.

Previous issue date: 2013-04-13 / This thesis of doctoral aims to analyze the political action of rural and textile workers of city Magé, State of Rio de Janeiro, between 1956 and 1973, highlighting the performance in partnership of these two categories, as well their forms of the organization and struggles. As we consider this city as an privileged scenario to investigate the connections between the rural and the urban - given that was a important producer of food and became a textile industrial center - our aim will be to map the participation of various political parties, leaders, groups and institutions that dialogued with these workers beyond the myth of the 'Sickle and Hammer'. Thus, we seek to contribute to studies on social history of work, emphasizing the link between the collective struggles and the political action tools used by these weavers and farmers, analyzed together in this research.

"Daughters of freemen still": female textile operatives and the changing face of Lowell, 1820-1850Murphy, John B. 12 March 2009 (has links)
This thesis investigates the female labor force of the Lowell textile mills from 1820 to 1850. First, it describes the development of the Lowell system and the philosophy on which it was founded. Next, it examines the working conditions in the mills and the daily lives of the women who worked in them. Finally, it describes the circumstances that brought about labor unrest and ultimately a complete change in the work force at Lowell, from the young, single, New England farm women to immigrant laborers. A variety of primary sources, such as letters, diaries, essays and poems written by the mill workers themselves, provide insights into how these women viewed their work, their lives, and the events that transformed the factories and city of Lowell. / Master of Arts

Main Labor Breaches of the Peruvian State in the Framework of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States / Principales Incumplimientos Laborales del Estado Peruano en el Marco del Tratado de Libre Comercio con Estados UnidosMendoza Choque, Luis Enrique 10 April 2018 (has links)
The following article begins with the old and close relationship between labor rights and international trade, a relationship that has become more important given the creation of new instruments, mechanisms and sanctions. The labor chapter of the Peru-US Trade Promotion Agreement and its application can be analyzed from different perspectives. The following article sets its focus on three distinct facets: the principle of progressivity of social rights; the legal nature of free trade agreements; and two of the current promotional labor regimes in Peruvian legislation. The article references two complaints of non-compliance with the labor chapter presented by Peruvian unions during the period since the Free Trade Agreement entered into force. Finally, the report presents conclusions that aim to contribute to the debate on this subject.

"But the half can never be told" : the lives of Cannelton's Cotton Mill women workersKoenigsknecht, Theresa A. January 2013 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / From 1851 to 1954, under various names, the Indiana Cotton Mills was the dominant industry in the small town of Cannelton, Indiana, mostly employing women and children. The female industrial laborers who worked in this mill during the middle and end of the nineteenth century represent an important and overlooked component of midwestern workers. Women in Cannelton played an essential role in Indiana’s transition from small scale manufacturing in the 1850s to large scale industrialization at the turn of the century. In particular, this work will provide an in-depth exploration of female operatives’ primary place in Cannelton society, their essential economic contributions to their families, and the unique tactics they used in attempts to achieve better working conditions in the mill. It will also explain the small changes in women’s work experiences from 1854 to 1884, and how ultimately marriage, not industrial work, determined the course of their later lives.
