Post TimeCoates, Peter F. (Peter Francis) 08 1900 (has links)
Post Time is a non-fiction video program depicting some of the careers found at North American horse race tracks. Through the use of videotaped footage taken at eight race tracks and three training farms, the horse racing industry's trainers, jockeys, owners and grooms are profiled in the world they call the backstretch. The video begins with a brief history of horse racing and the origins of thoroughbred horses followed by closer examinations of the economic and social experiences faced by the owners, trainers, jockeys, and grooms as they attempt to prepare horses for racing every week.

Hästar vid Falu Gruva : 1540-1815Grein, Judit January 2017 (has links)
Falu mine horses have historically been of great importance for the daily work at the mine. They were used above ground for the transportation of for example wood and ore, but also to power the many horse capstans that were used for hoisting and for pumping groundwater out of the mine. Between 1697 and 1815 horses began to work underground as well, with running horse capstans and with transportation. At first, these horses were lowered to the bottom of the mine every day, but later they came to live below ground. This study gives a broad picture of several aspects of the horse's life, focusing on the period from 1540 to 1815, when the horses were very important to the mine. Despite the horses' prominent role in the mine's history, they have never fully been portrayed in historiography. This study aims to do that.

Elektromyografická analýza rozdílů v provedení vybraných cviků na gymnastickém koni a na koni v kroku / Elektromyographic analysis of differences in selected excercises on pommel horse and riding horsePyšková, Barbora January 2017 (has links)
Author: Bc. et Bc. Barbora Pyšková Title: Elektromyographic analysis of differences in selected excercises on pommel horse and riding horse Objectives: The aim of the thesis was to measure the activity of selected muscles, expressed as the percentage value of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), during excercises performed by both males and females probands. The effect of treatment (on pommel horse vs riding horse) and proband sex on muscle activity was tested. Methods: Maximal voluntary contraction of each muscle (eight in total) was electromyographically measured in each proband, using the test according to Janda. These values were used as a standard to which the values obtained by excercising on pommel horse and riding horse were related. The values were averages of three repeated measurements. The effect of studied factors was tested by analysis of variance. Results: The tested hypotheses were confirmed. The muscle activity during excercises was statistically significantly affected by the factors studied, therefore the variation in measured values is not random. Muscle activity tended to be higher on riding horse than on pommel horse, and in females compared to males. Key words: horse riding, pommel horse, EMG, electromyography, hipotherapy, correct horse sit

By the Head of a Spirited Horse: A Biocultural Analysis of Horse-Depositions as Reflections of Horseman Identities in Early Britain (Iron Age to Early Medieval Period)Cross, Pamela J. January 2018 (has links)
Horse-depositions were examined to explore the development of human-horse relationships in early Britain using a multidisciplinary approach (osteological,
archaeological, historical and ethnographical) to interpret these relationships as part
of Horseman identities in the Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods. Medieval
Horseman-burials are an established phenomenon and considered an Anglo-Saxon import in Britain which expressed a general elite-warrior male status. However, Horseman-burials form an exclusive minority which suggest not a general warrior elite but specific subgroups and/or traditions potentially rooted in earlier practices.
Husbandry, transportation-use and ritual practices were also investigated. Horses and horse-use were evaluated via stature and correlations with sex. The results
indicated sexual dimorphism should be considered when interpreting horse stature.
It is hypothesised that generally females were pastured breeding-stock while males
were transportation-stock which received supplemental nutrition and care. Males
were/are generally larger than females, and size disparity was probably heightened by such gendered horse-use practices. Overall, it appears females were 1.3m or
less, and horses over 1.3m were males. Horse-depositional patterns in human,
particularly funerary, spaces were analysed. Horse deposition often had ritual
components and practices changed over time reflecting changing Horseman
identities, particularly during the Roman period. Roman-British interactions, the
destruction of native-elite chariot-warfare identities and the development of native-auxiliary groups refocused Horseman identities on mounted-warfare. This change
from driver to rider, a more intimate relationship, appears reflected by the
development of human-horse burials and Horseman identities linked to auxiliary-native cultural groups which incorporated Roman equites ideals with native-auxiliary
and imported Eurasian Horseman traditions. / Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
Financial support also came from the project partners, particularly author Bernard Cornwell, the Sutton Hoo Society. Additional financial support for equine osteological research was supplied by SYNTHESYS. / The appendices which accompany the thesis are not available online.

Rabies in Arizona: Equine Risk and PreventionWright, Ashley D., Greene, Elizabeth A. 05 1900 (has links)
4 pp. / The Informed Arizona Equestrian Horse Health Series was designed to bring up to date information on issues of importance to the horse owners of Arizona and beyond. Rabies has been identified in horses in Arizona (most recently Santa Cruz county in 2016), and is not only fatal for horses, but also can affect the humans handling those horses. It is often overlooked as a possible diagnosis due to the nonspecific early signs of infection. Find out how to protect you and your horses from this devastating disease.

Mechanical Design of a Compliant HorseshoeCamacho Moreno, Dionisio, Giner Pérez, Jorge January 2014 (has links)
The principal aim of this research is the design of a more compliant horseshoe which allows the natural expansion and compression of the horse hoof. Three different simulations have been carried out in by using Finite Element Method in order to know the behaviour of the horse hoof when is analysed under the same load conditions. First the hoof will be studied without any horseshoe to obtain the produced displacement by the hoof expansion. Once the displacement of the barefoot hoof is known, an assembly, in which a sample stiff horseshoe is attached to the hoof by nails, will be performed to obtain both the hoof displacement as the horseshoe one. Finally, after three different researches about the current horseshoes, different possible alternative materials and most commons attachment methods, a more flexible horseshoe will be created and analysed. The results obtained in the three simulations will be compared and commented.
