Decomposing kinetic energy along Line P in the Pacific Ocean

Wang, Manman 18 August 2016 (has links)
The upper ocean is host to overlapping vortical and internal waves dynamics over the submesoscales (10-100km), both of which are poorly represented in eddy-resolving ocean models. We analyze upper-ocean (0-200 m) horizontal-wavenumber spectra along Line P in the North Pacific subpolar gyre from shipboard ADCP measurements in February and June (2013-2015), and compare them to spectra from a 1/36th degree numerical simulation output. At scales between 10 and 100 km, the ADCP along-track (Cv) and across-track (Cv) kinetic energy spectra approximately follow power laws of k-2 and have a ratio R = Cv/Cu - 1. For purely non-divergent motions, the order of the power law and R should be the same, so divergent motions are evident. A Helmholtz decomposition estimates the fraction total kinetic energy that is contributed by internal-wave and vortex components. Vortex components follow a power law of k-2 with ratio R-2, consistent with predictions for a non-divergent flow, while internal waves are mostly consistent with the Garrett and Munk internal wave model. There are modest seasonal changes; vortical motions are slightly stronger in February than in June, whereas the amplitudes of the internal wave component increases in June. Depth variability of non-divergent vortical flows shows that at low wave-numbers energy decreases and that the kinetic energy spectra are bluer with depth, inconsistent with predictions from surface quasi-geostrophic theory of redder spectra with depth. Conversely, in the simulation the depth variability of the decomposed vortex components is in agreement with predictions of surface quasi-geostrophic theory. The simulations had very weak internal waves fields. / Graduate / 0415 / manmanw@uvic.ca

Arctic ice cap velocity variations revealed using ERS SAR interferometry

Unwin, Beverley Victoria January 1998 (has links)
This thesis will examine the velocity structure of Austfonna, a large ice cap in the Svalbard archipelago. The remoteness of its location had previously hindered detailed observation by traditional methods, but indirect evidence suggested that it had the potential to be dynamically interesting. A recently developed remote sensing technique, SAR interferometry (inSAR), has allowed us to obtain the most detailed map of Austfonna's topography to date, plus unprecedented synoptic measurements of its velocity field. A four year time series of data acquired by the European Remote Sensing satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2 has been used to delineate active and inactive areas of the ice cap, which suggest that past ideas about Austfonna's thermal structure may need to be re-examined. It has also revealed large temporal velocity variations in one of its major drainage basins. These are difficult to classify because intermittent sampling has prevented us from determining their temporal wavelength, and also because globally the database of observed glacier velocity variations is so sparse that the range of possible variable flow scenarios is unknown. The work here demonstrates the huge potential for inSAR in helping to resolve such issues, and in providing an invaluable resource for scientists monitoring the stability of the world's ice fields.

On-line komunikace v marketingu cestovního ruchu ČR ve vztahu k zahraničí / On-line communication of Czech Republic as a tourist destination on foreing markets

Doláková, Gabriela January 2010 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the level of utilization of on-line communication mix in marketing of Czech Republic as a tourist destination at foreign markets executed by CzechTourism, particularly concerning the current project Confirmation of the status and competitive advantage of Czech Republic at the European tourism market. Resources for the main analysis are a detailed study of on-line communication mix in general terms as well as in tourism both globally and in the Czech Republic. The analysis revealed major deficiences in the approach towards the communication implementation, mainly in social media communication, and also deficiencies in web design which toghether caused the project to fail. Finall conclusion contains improvement suggestions and recommendations of some foreign best practice examples.

Postavení zpravodajského webového portálu Seznam Zprávy v české mediální krajině po prvním roce fungování / The status of Seznam Zprávy news server on Czech media market after one year of its existence

Bejlková, Kamila January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on the news server Seznam Zprávy. Its goal is to find out, how the server established in the period of the first two years since its creation in October 2016. The goal of the work is to describe the specifics of online media and the Internet, which users are able to access not only from technologies such as computer or mobile devices, but also within smart TVs in the form of HbbTV. The main aim of the analytical part is to find out how this news server established itself within the Czech media landscape. The main factor the interest of the audience and the frequency of citations of the diary in other Czech media. News server Seznam Zprávy is compared with other, currently most popular, Czech news online journals: iDNES, Novinky, Denik, Aktualne, Lidovky and iRozhlas. This thesis offers statistics of data about traffic and the numbers of real users available from the NetMonitor.cz. Based on them, it is determined what success the server Seznam Zprávy for the first two years of the audience recorded. In the role of other indicators are the number of citations in other media. Overview of this data has been provided by the online media archive of Newton Media. The last indicator is the interest in social profiles of the medium on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

A greedy heuristic for axial line placement in collections of convex polygons

Hagger, Leonard 15 February 2006 (has links)
Master of Science - Science / Axial line placement is one step in a method known as space syntax which is used in town planning to analyse architectural structures. This is becoming increasingly important in the quickly growing urban world of today. The field of axial line placement is an area of space syntax that has previously been done manually which is becoming increasingly impractical. Research is underway to automate the process and this research forms a large part of the automation. The general problem of axial line placement has been shown to be NP-complete. For this reason, previous research in this field has been focused on finding special cases where this is not the case or finding heuristics that approximate a solution. The majority of the research conducted has been on the simpler case of axial line placement in configurations of orthogonal rectangles and the only work done with convex polygons has been in the restricted case of deformed urban grids. This document presents research that finds two non-trivial special cases of convex polygons that have polynomial solutions and finds the first heuristic for general configurations of convex polygons.

Perceptions of line managers at Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipaity regarding the impact of stress and trauma on work performance among employees.

Mbawu, Mulalo 30 May 2008 (has links)
ABSTRACT This study is a combination of the qualitative and quantitative approach using an exploratory/descriptive design conducted at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Northern Region. The study explored how Line Managers at Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality perceive the impact of stress and trauma on work performance among employees. The study was conducted with 29 line managers sampled through a random sampling procedure, who had been working for Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for at least three years. A questionnaire was used to collect the required data. The study found that line managers at Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality were of the view that stress and trauma can affect work performance among employees. It was also found that line managers are uninvolved in their sub-ordinates’ personal matters that are likely to cause mental health problems like stress and trauma.
