Collaboration between business schools and organisations to maximise the impact of the MBA programmeNaicker, Ravindran 24 February 2013 (has links)
Despite numerous successes and appreciable advantages of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, the reputation of the MBA has deteriorated in the eyes of businesses, as its relevance has been questioned and businesses often fail to see students applying acquired skills practically back at work. While previous research has focussed on the experience and opinions of MBA students themselves, this research sought insights of businesses and business schools, specifically considering the value of collaborative relationships for strengthening the MBA’s impact. This research aimed to understand how collaboration can improve the impact of the MBA, first by affirming the successes of the MBA, confirming its importance to business and then exploring current challenges. Previous initiatives have been unsuccessful in reviving the MBA’s ailing reputation, as they were isolated initiatives, lacking the support and involvement of other MBA stakeholders.<p/>This research, therefore, investigated the requirements for a collaborative relationship to be willingly entered into and sustained, looking particularly at in-house programmes which were successful in encouraging collaboration and involvement of stakeholders. From the research findings, the Collaborative Impact Model was designed to set out how a collaborative relationship can be established and maintained, optimising the impact of the MBA while also minimising its many challenges. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Tesis

Innovation in Traditionally Monopolistic Firms - A Telco Case StudyUmair, Syed Muhammad January 2012 (has links)
The telecom industry is moving from a stable environment to a very dynamic industry where the entrance of new players and the macro economic factors like crisis have been pushing it towards commoditization. In spite of the fact that the Telco consumer base is increasing the value generation capability of this industry has been challenged in the past years. The management is well aware of the situation but due to the traditionally monopolistic nature of these organizations finds it difficult to push any radical change. The purpose of the study is to identifying those factors which contributed to the success of these firms in past and later identifying those elements which are needed for these organizations to foster an innovative culture capable of bringing the needed changes. The major objectives of the research include identifying the main reason behind the need for innovation today and factors that have been hindering the innovation process in these firms. The next step was to study the best practices outside the Telcos industry which have helped other firms to be the Innovation leaders. Finally the study identifies those strategies and best practices which are viable in the Telecom industry. It has been found that the size and political nature of these organizations makes it difficult to push ideas to reality. Therefore the first need is the need of a culture change and a separate path (apart from the traditional line management) for the escalation of ideas. Secondly the Telco industry is not able to keep pace with the innovation of its complementing industries and therefore there is a dire need make innovation a priority from exploring new revenue sources to the innovation of business models with its existing partners. In the past the industry has tried the industrial silos model by decentralizing and given complete autonomy to its major revenue generating services but now it needs to demolish these departmental silos and be open to provide services which cut across many of its existing services without thinking too much about cannibalization.

Understanding the Individual Narratives of Women Who Use Formula in Relation to the Master Narrative of "Breast is Best"Scott, Susanna Foxworthy 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Despite clinical recommendations, only 25.8% of infants in the United States are exclusively breastfed at 6 months of age. Breastfeeding policies and communication campaigns exist to support exclusive breastfeeding, and women who use formula report facing stigma and feeling like a failure. Narratives can be used to discern how individuals make sense of experiences related to health, and narrative theorizing in health communication provides a framework of problematics used to explain how individuals construct stories that reveal the tensions between continuity and disruption and creativity and constraint. Individual experiences are often influenced by master narratives such as “Breast is best,” which are phrases that shape our understanding of the world. Because of the negative impact of using formula on maternal well-being, the purpose of this research was to use a narrative framework to analyze the stories of women who used formula in relation to the master narrative of breast is best. Building off of pilot interviews with 22 mothers, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 women who had used formula within the first 6 months after giving birth and had an infant no older than 12 months at the time of the interview. Qualitative analysis revealed that women perceived formula as shameful and costly. Conversely, they viewed breastfeeding as biologically superior, better for bonding, and a way to enact good motherhood. Current messaging about breastfeeding, particularly for women who intend to breastfeed, may have unintended negative effects when women face a disruption to their breastfeeding journey. In addition, women viewed breastfeeding and formula feeding as in relation to and in opposition to one another, reducing the perceived acceptability of behaviors such as combination feeding. Despite constraints in the master narrative regarding acceptable infant feeding practices, women demonstrated creativity in their individual stories and found formula feeding enabled more equitable parenting and preserved mental health. Practical implications include that organizations promoting exclusive breastfeeding in the United States should move away from framing breastfeeding as an all-or-nothing choice and develop tailored and value-neutral messaging recognizing breastfeeding as a complex psychosocial and biological process.
