An Analysis of Factors in Reading Achievement Scores of the Third and Sixth Grades of Garfield CountyMoore, Harvey D. 01 May 1955 (has links)
The problem of reading continuity through primary and intermediate grades in Garfield County has been one of growing concern to our supervisors and administrators for some time. It has been felt that, because of the high correlation of good reading and success of other school subjects, all possible effort should be made in developing a reading program which would insure continuous progress. The slow child would then be assured of meeting only school work of which he would be capable of doing.

A Maslovian Approach To The Motivations Of Shakespeare’s Transvestite Heroines In The Two Gentelmen Of Verona, As You Like It, and The Merchant of VeniceEward-Mangione, Angela 29 May 2007 (has links)
"Motivation" is the force that drives an individual to perform a certain action. Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), an American psychologist profoundly influenced by the existential and teleological paradigms, expounded a motivation theory that remains precise and replicable, as well as applicable to other spheres of study, including the humanities. Indeed, psychology experts and non-specialists are by and large familiar with Maslow's Pyramid of Human Needs. Moreover, despite the abundance of literary criticism that utilizes Freudian-based theory to analyze the motivations of literary characters, critics have largely neglected the use of other paradigms, including Maslow's. In this thesis, I use Maslow's texts as support for identifying the motivations of women characters who dress as men in Shakespeare's dramas. I also simultaneously employ Maslow's theory to illuminate the parallels in these characters' motivations and the varying need levels that Maslow develops in his hierarchy. After a comprehensive review of the literary criticism that addresses the dramatic motif of cross-dressing in early modern England and an extensive explanation of the history of motivation theory up to and including that of Abraham Maslow, I treat the following plays by William Shakespeare: The Two Gentlemen of Verona, As You Like It, and The Merchant of Venice in conjunction with Maslow's Pyramid of Human Needs. Through this analysis, I demonstrate that Julia cross-dresses to satisfy needs on the level of Love/Belonging; Rosalind cross-dresses for reasons that correspond to the Safety level, then to the Esteem level; and Portia demonstrates motivations that correspond to Maslow's Love/Belonging and Esteem levels.

The Effect of a Summer School Literacy Program on the Reading Attitudes of Elementary School Struggling ReadersFradley, Katie 27 November 2007 (has links)
This mixed-method study explored and examined the reading attitudes of thirdgrade struggling readers (n=91) following six weeks of summer school using a scripted literacy program (Voyager Passport). During the quantitative portion of the study students (n=91) from five different summer school sites were given the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (McKenna & Kear, 1990). The survey, which was administered by the classroom teacher the first day of summer school and the last week of summer school, provided scores for academic, recreational and total reading attitude. Following data collection the results of the ERAS surveys were analyzed using a dependent measures t-test as well as descriptive statistics.
Results revealed no significant differences in recreational or total reading attitude following summer school using a scripted literacy program. Gender and school site were both examined using a multivariate analysis. Results indicated no statistically significant differences based on gender. However, when academic attitude was examined the results for school site were found to be significant F (4, 90) = 2.87, p = .03. A follow-up Tukey test revealed that although there was a difference in academic attitudes between the school sites, the variation could not be pinpointed to particular sites.
The qualitative portion of the study relied on both field notes gathered through classroom observations (n=113) and focus groups. One focus group was held at each of the five summer school sites. During focus groups a group moderator asked the students a series of six questions. Results were analyzed using semantic content analysis (Stewart & Shamdasani, 1990) to identify themes related to students' attitudes about reading. After a cross case analysis of the targeted classrooms was conducted, triangulation was used to compare the findings from the ERAS survey, classroom observations, and focus groups. The qualitative findings revealed that following summer school students liked to read, felt they were better readers, and felt prepared to take the standardized test. However, only 29% of the students passed the alternative assessment. The results also revealed questions regarding the fidelity of the implementation and concerns with the lack of norming data on the fidelity measure.

Consequência da recapacitação de linhas de transmissão por injeção de componente de terceira harmônica /Ferrari, Júlio César Santos. January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This work presents a study concerning the transmission line uprating method by injection of third harmonic voltage (THV). The method was published in 2017 by Alaei and Khajehoddin as a more economically feasible proposal to raise the transmission voltage level without the requirement for changes in the structural elements of overhead lines. The THV injection in conventional overhead lines aims to flatten the waveform of the phase voltages, resulting in a reduction in its peak values. This represents a significant advantage, since the specification of right-of-way (ROW) width and ground clearance bases on the peak value of the phase voltages. Therefore, a reduction in the peak voltage would not only allow the existing structures to transmit electricity at higher voltages but also the construction of new transmission towers with reduced size and narrower ROW, making it an economically attractive proposal for electric power transmission companies. In the article in which the referred uprating method was proposed, the authors perform voltage and current analyzes only at the TL ends. The contribution of this work to the studies of the uprating method by THV injection consists in the analyzes made through a distributed parameter transmission line model, which allowed the monitoring of the phase voltages along the extension of lines with different lengths, both at steady-state and during the system switching. The results showed that THV injection causes overvoltage along the extent ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

I am Warrior Woman, Hear Me Roar: The Challenge and Reproduction of Heteronormativity in Speculative Television ProgramsClark, Leisa Anne 06 March 2008 (has links)
This paper explores how the "warrior woman" trope in western culture, as portrayed in late 20th century science fiction/fantasy and speculative television, reflects heteronormative/heterosexist discourses of femininity in American culture. First, I will examine feminine discourse in American culture, especially in the late 20th century. Then I will discuss how the tenets of second and third wave feminism influenced western paradigms of "the ideal female" and impacted pop culture by producing "warrior women" who both reflected and challenged heteronormative ideas and feminist principles. By examining several television shows produced in the United States and Great Britain from the late 1960s to 2007, I hope to show how the warrior woman trope has grown and changed under the influence of feminism and 20th century values.

Provision at the interface : the Māori mental health contracting experience : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Māori Health at Massey University, Turitea Campus, Palmerston North, New ZealandBoulton, Amohia Frances January 2005 (has links)
New Zealand's mental health performance and monitoring framework is a complex and evolving one. Its initial development occurred at a time when it was taken for granted that mainstream understandings of health and mainstream systems of service delivery would not only be appropriate for all New Zealanders, but would also service the needs of all New Zealanders. Latterly however there has been an acknowledgment that a wholly different understanding of health and health care has existed in this country; the worldview understood and shared by tangata whenua. This thesis uses a theoretical framework devised specifically for this research to investigate the experience of Maori mental health providers as they contract to provide mental health services for the Crown; to ascertain whether Maori mental health providers deliver outside of their contracts; and to examine the role multiple accountabilities play in contracting. The theoretical framework, the "Maori research paradigm net" is inclusive of both the kaupapa Maori and Maori centred approaches, moving beyond the traditional dichotomy that frames Maori health research and allowing the researcher the freedom to select and use the best and most appropriate research tools from both traditional social science research practices, and from Maori culture and tikanga, to answer the research question posed. The thesis concludes that Maori mental health providers deliver mental health services at the interface between two philosophical viewpoints or worldviews: that of the Maori community in which they are located and to whom they provide services; and that of the funder, from whom they obtain resources to enable them to deliver services. As a consequence of working at the interface, Maori providers regularly and routinely work outside the scope of their contracts to deliver mental health services which are aligned with those values and norms enshrined in Maori culture. To adequately acknowledge and validate the beneficial extra-contractual provision which occurs as a result of delivering mental health services at the interface, and prevent less desirable provision, a more responsive contracting environment and a performance measurement framework, which integrates both worldviews and which takes account of the multiple accountabilities that Maori providers manage, is required.
