Influence of Therapeutic Horseback Riding on Gross Motor Function in Children with AutismLockhart, Jennifer Marie 14 August 2015 (has links)
Autism is a disorder that has increased in numbers and prevalence within today’s society. Though no cure has been found, recent studies have focused on different therapeutic intervention techniques offered to autistic individuals, including the use of Therapeutic Horseback Riding. This study analyzes the relationship of therapeutic horseback riding on gross motor function in children with Autism. Four children participated in a ten week previously established therapeutic horseback riding program at French Camp, Mississippi. Gross motor function was assessed before and after five riding sessions by recording performances of eleven skills from Motor Skills Inventory (MSI). Only two participants completed all riding sessions and MSI assessments to be eligible for this study. Statistical analysis was conducted using Friedman’s Two Way Analysis of Variance by Ranks. There were no significant differences in the assessments before/after the riding sessions as well as the entire period of the ten week program.

The Effects of Therapeutic Horseback Riding on Communication in Children and Adolescents with Developmental DisordersHolm, Shelby Anne 11 August 2017 (has links)
This mixed-methods study examined the effects of participation in a 10-week therapeutic horseback riding program on communicative behaviors in participants diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder or Down syndrome. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors utilized the Naples Equestrian Challenge Participant Initial Evaluation to complete a pre-evaluation prior to the first riding session and a post-evaluation during the last session. Following the post-evaluation, the researcher collected qualitative data through conducting parent interviews. The study included 16 participants (M = 12.62; age range 5-23 years old, 8 females and 8 males). Change scores for each participant were calculated and an aggregated mean for pre- and post-evaluations were determined and results indicated increases in all seven communication indicators. Analysis of parent interviews also revealed improvements in communicative skills and behaviors. Overall, results indicate improvements in communication for children and adolescents with developmental disability and the need to further investigate therapeutic horseback riding as an efficacious therapy.

The Effect of Therapeutic Riding on Classroom Attention of Children with Developmental DisabilitiesPatterson, Morgan Jessica 14 August 2015 (has links)
Research indicates children with disabilities benefit from therapeutic horseback riding (TR). This study examined the impact TR had on attention behaviors of five children with various developmental disabilities in a preschool classroom. Children were observed in the classroom setting twice weekly for 10 weeks on a day they participated in TR services and on a day they did not participate in TR. Single case experiments suggested there was not a significant difference in all but one child’s sustained attention in the classroom on days children received TR services. An independent samples t-test suggested there was no significant difference in scores between riding day (M<./I> = 1.78, SD =.247) and non-riding days (M = 1.76, SD = .262); t(87) = -.481, p = .632 for the group as a whole. Further research should be conducted to determine TR’s effect on behaviors in the classroom.

In the realm of therapeutic horseback riding one becomes aware of the
idiosyncratic way in which each unique individual depicts his or her experience of a
therapeutic riding endeavor. This study focuses on the meanings attributed to
therapeutic riding in the lives of children with cerebral palsy because the complementary
use of horses in therapy with these children may be of great importance to the medical
fraternity. This exploration investigated the influence of the children's relationship with a
horse, and the parents' perception of horseriding as a complementary therapy to
occupational- and physiotherapy. The theoretical background and a literature review on
therapeutic horseback riding and cerebral palsy were presented in this study.
This study followed a holistic, ecosystemic epistemology. Both a qualitative
approach and a quantitative approach were adopted as two complementary sides of a
