Yes / The opportunity to assess human skeletal remains from Norton Priory, near Runcorn
(Cheshire), led to the discovery of peri-mortem blade trauma on an adult male
skeleton. The burial evidence suggests that this individual was a wealthy knight
and lay benefactor of the priory in the thirteenth century and skeletal evidence has
revealed that he was the victim of inter-personal violence. Additionally, many skeletal
elements were affected by advanced Paget’s disease, which may have resulted in
a certain level of vulnerability due to restricted movement of his arms as a result
of Pagetic thickening of the bones. This is the only evidence found of weaponrelated trauma on the Norton Priory skeletal assemblage, making it a rare case and
contributing to our understanding of inter-personal violence associated with an
ecclesiastical establishment in medieval Britain.

Al-Asbāb wa-l-ʿalāmāt « Les causes et les symptômes » de Nağīb al-Dīn al-Samarqandī (m. 619/1222) est un traité de médecine qui a fait la renommée de son auteur. Toutefois, et malgré le fait qu’il ait été signalé dès 1935 par l’historien des sciences Max Meyerhof comme l’un des ouvrages « à publier de préférence », il est resté inédit. C’est une édition intégrale de ce traité que nous proposons.Il s’agit d’un vademecum dont l’auteur a fondé la rédaction sur trois sources, notamment le Canon d’Avicenne. Il a ainsi respecté la tradition médicale de l’époque qui classifiait les maladies d’une part en pathologies spécifiques à chacun des organes du corps, d’autre part en affections non spécifiques « générales », celles qui touchent tout le corps telles les fièvres. Il a aussi traité de la cosmétologie, des poisons, des maladies de la peau, des blessures, des fractures et luxations, cela dans un esprit d’exhaustivité. La description des pathologies est assortie de l’exposé des symptômes auxquels notre auteur préconise des remèdes à base de médicaments simples ou composés. Nous avons édité le texte en arabe en veillant à respecter l’orthographe et la grammaire du manuscrit de base.Cet ouvrage riche en vocabulaire technique nous a permis d’établir plusieurs glossaires, représentant la première classification détaillée du vocabulaire médical arabe médiéval en langue française. Nous voulons contribuer par cette édition à enrichir le corpus des textes médicaux, en particulier celui du XIIIe siècle, et lutter contre les idées reçues qui font de cette époque une période historique de décadence, sinon le début d’une sclérose culturelle et scientifique dans le monde arabe. / Al-Asbāb wa-l-ʿalāmāt "The causes and symptoms" by Nağīb al-Dīn al-Samarqandī (d.619 / 1222), is a medical treatise which made its author famous. However despite the fact that in 1935 it was acclaimed by science historian Max Meyerhof as a book that "should be published", it never made it to print. This work, the object of this thesis, is a critical edition of a complete version of the treatise.The redaction of this vade mecum was based by the author on three sources, particularly the "Canon" of Avicenna. He therefore respected the medical tradition of the time, which classified diseases on the one hand by pathologies specific to each organ of the body, and on the other hand by non-specific conditions (which we could qualify as general) affecting the entire body such as fevers. He also examined cosmetology and poisons, skin diseases, wounds, fractures and dislocations in a spirit of completeness. For every disease described, the author included its associated symptoms, advocatingtreatments based on simple or compound remedies.We edited the Arabic text while strictly observing the spelling and grammar of the original manuscript.This book, rich in technical terms specific to the field of anatomy and pathology, has allowed us to establish several glossaries that represent the first detailed classification of medieval Arabic medical vocabulary in French.Our aim, in this text edition, is to contribute to enrich the corpus of medical texts and in particular that of the thirteenth century and to counter the accepted ideas claiming that this era was a historical period of decline, if not the beginning of a cultural and scientific sclerosis in the Arab world.

"Tears of Compunction": French Gothic Ivories in Devotional PracticeGuerin, Sarah Margaret 17 January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents a new perspective on the function of objects in late-medieval
devotional practice through a study of the so-called Soissons group of thirteenth-century French Gothic ivories. These ivory diptychs were sophisticated tools constructed to guide
the user through various spiritual exercises that led to prayer. The hitherto unexplained
increase in the availability of ivory in mid-thirteenth-century France is accounted for by
an alteration in the trade routes that brought elephant tusks from the Swahili coast of
Africa to northern Europe: a newly-opened passage through the Straits of Gibraltar
allowed a small amount of luxury goods to be shipped together with bulk materials
necessary to the northern textile industries. The increasing supply required a revision of
the structure of the thirteenth-century craft of ivory. The Soissons group, the first ivory
diptychs fashioned during this time of growth in ivory markets, is subdivided into two
sections. An itinerant master who traveled throughout the Picard region between 1235
and 1270 crafted the first group. Concurrently, three separate Parisian artists
produced the second group based on a Picard model. This dissertation redates all the
ivories substantially earlier than previously thought, conclusions which were attained
through stylistic analysis. The dense Passion iconography shaped the diptychs’ function
in private devotion. The narrative encouraged the viewer to practice a number of spiritual
exercises—reading, memorization and compunction—analogous to the three reasons for
allowing images in the Christian Church, the triplex ratio. The Passion diptych format
introduced with these objects was immensely popular throughout the thirteenth and
fourteenth centuries and its conservation over time underscored its effectiveness. The
small differences in iconography and composition among the seven Soissons diptychs,
however, were subtle modifications to adjust to different audiences and to hone the
objects’ efficacy as tools for prayer.

Ce mémoire porte sur l’évolution de l’antijudaïsme chez les intellectuels chrétiens parisiens, particulièrement chez Eudes de Châteauroux, lors du procès du Talmud, c’est-à-dire, entre les années 1240 – année où commence le procès – et 1248, année de la condamnation finale des textes talmudiques. Avec la création des universités au XIIe siècle prend place une curiosité intellectuelle croissante et un désir d’apprendre davantage. Parallèlement à cet essor, l’Église se renforce et une orthodoxie doctrinale commence à s’implanter, avec le désir toujours plus fort de contrôler et d’encadrer les fidèles. Lorsque Nicolas Donin dénonce le Talmud au souverain pontife, en 1239, Grégoire IX demande aux savants chrétiens de l’étudier et de l’analyser. Après examen, ces textes sont condamnés et les juifs accusés de se détourner de l’Ancien Testament pour suivre le Talmud, un livre rempli d’erreurs. Ainsi, ce que nous allons démontrer dans ce travail est que l’antijudaïsme virulent chez Eudes de Châteauroux, lors du procès du Talmud, vient d’une incompréhension des livres talmudiques. / This thesis sheds light on the evolution of antijudaism amongst Christians Parisian intellectuals – such as Odo of Chateauroux – between the first year of the trial of the Talmud (1240) and the year of the final sentence (1248) of Talmudic texts. With the creation of universities in the twelfth century, intellectual curiosity and the thirst of knowledge started to spread. Simultaneously, the church’s presence and its doctrinal orthodoxy strengthens, with an even stronger desire to control its worshipers. When Nicolas Donin reports the Talmud to the Pope in 1239, Gregory IX requested Christian scholars to study and analyze it. Once properly examined, the texts were condemned and Jews were accused of turning away from the Old Testament in order to follow the Talmud, a book full of errors. Thus, what will be brought to light in this work is that the virulent antijudaism of Odo of Chateauroux, exhibited during the trial of the Talmud, stems from a misunderstanding of the Talmudic books.

Résumé : Suite à la première croisade (1096-1099) qui aboutit à l’établissement de quatre États latins au Proche-Orient, les chrétiens et les musulmans s’engagent durant les deux siècles suivants dans une lutte pour le contrôle du territoire syro-palestinien, également connu sous le nom de Bilâd al-Shâm. Toutefois, l’essor de nouvelles dynasties musulmanes, soit les zengides, les ayyoubides et les mameloukes, permet avec le regain du jihad une reconquête graduelle des possessions chrétiennes, mettant fin à l’existence des États latins d’Orient en 1291 malgré plusieurs croisades. Cette reconquête progressive menée par les musulmans s’accompagne de divers processus d’appropriation et de marquage de l’espace obéissant à un cadre islamique et pouvant être regroupés selon deux concepts : l’islamisation et l’arabisation. En analysant plusieurs sources chrétiennes latines, telles des chroniques, des récits de pèlerinage et des projets de croisade, nous constatons que les chrétiens affichent une certaine connaissance de ces processus d’appropriation religieuse, politique, sociale et culturelle. À la lumière des perceptions chrétiennes de l’islam et de la polémique anti-musulmane, la présente étude se penche sur les différents processus d’islamisation et d’arabisation perçus par les chrétiens latins et démontre comment ces processus sont interprétés par ces derniers. // Abstract : After the First Crusade (1096-1099) and the establishment of four Crusader states in the Near East, Christians and Muslims initiate a two century struggle for the control of the Levant, also known as Bilâd al-Shâm. However, the rise of new Muslim powers, such as the Zengid, Ayyubid and Mamluk dynasties, allows a revival of jihad and a gradual conquest of Christian territories, thus putting an end to the Crusader states in 1291. This conquest is accompanied by several mechanisms of territorial appropriation in the newly captured territories, linked to processes of Islamization and Arabization. By analyzing many Latin sources, such as chronicles, pilgrimage relations and Crusade manifestos, we find that Christians show a certain knowledge of these processes of religious, political, social and cultural appropriation. In light of Christian perceptions of Islam and of the anti-Islamic polemic, this study examines the different processes of Islamization and Arabization as seen by Christians and shows how these processes were understood.

Le Comté de Tripoli est le dernier à être fondé des quatre Etats Latins d’Orient issus de la Première Croisade. Ce Comté est le seul à garder sa capitale en possession des croisés jusqu’aux dernières années de l’existence de ces Etats. Ce Comté possède certains des plus anciens châteaux construits par les croisés au début du XIIe siècle tels les châteaux de Tripoli et Gibelet.Cette thèse a plusieurs objectifs, elle vise à préciser les frontières du Comté de Tripoli, énumérer et préciser l’ensemble des places fortes de ce Comté, étudier d’une façon exhaustive les différents sites fortifiés situés sur le territoire de la République Libanaise, et l’élaboration d’une typologie de l’architecture défensive de l’époque des croisades aux XIIe - XIIIe s. dans ce Comté.Grâce aux différentes méthodes de prospection archéologique, l’étude topographique du terrain avec l’archéologie du paysage, il était possible d’identifier et de découvrir plusieurs sites fortifiés, essentiellement des tours, qui n’étaient pas connus auparavant.Un intérêt spécial a été consacré dans notre travail à la lecture approfondie et l’analyse systématique de quelques sites fortifiés majeurs. Cela a permis une meilleure compréhension de l’installation de ces sites, de leur histoire, et de l’évolution de leur construction. Les sites en question sont: Archas, le château de Gibelet, le château de Smar Jbeil, le château Saint-Gilles à Tripoli, la tour Bahani et la tour Mouheich. / The County of Tripoli was the last one to be created between the Frenkish States established after the First Crusade. It is the only State that kept its capital city within the power of the Crusades till the last years of the existence of these States. Some of the oldest castles built at the beginning of the XIIth century are located in this County; such as the castles of Tripoli and Gibelet.This PhD has several objectives; it aims to define the frontiers of the County of Tripoli, to list and specify all its strongholds, to study exhaustively the various fortified sites in the territory of the Republic of Lebanon, and to develop a typology of defensive architecture of the Crusades during the XIIth - XIIIth centuries in this county.Through various methods of archaeological survey, study of the topography of the territory with archaeological landscape reading, it was possible to identify and explore several fortified sites, mainly towers not known before. In our work, special interest was devoted on extensive reading and systematic analysis of some major fortified sites. This enabled a better understanding of their installation, their history and the evolution of their construction. The sites are: Archas, Castle of Gibelet, Castle of Smar Jbeil, the castle of St. Gilles in Tripoli, the tower Bahani and the tower Mouheish.

Cette thèse s’intéresse aux collaborations et au partage du savoir entre intellectuels juifs et chrétiens, en France, durant les XIIIe et XIVe siècles et propose une analyse comparative des différents échanges, dans trois domaines distincts : théologie, philosophie et astronomie. En prenant en compte les sources latines et hébraïques qui témoignent de cette transmission du savoir, nous proposons une étude approfondie divisée en deux parties. La première s’intéresse à l’évolution de l’enseignement dans les communautés juives et dans la société chrétienne. La seconde analyse le contexte de rédaction des Extractiones de Talmut, la transmission du savoir entre Maïmonide et Thomas d’Aquin, la collaboration étroite entre Jacob ben Makhir et Armengaud Blaise, ainsi que l’échange intellectuel significatif entre Gersonide et ses confrères chrétiens. Notre objectif est de répondre aux questions suivantes : les savants chrétiens et juifs recevaient-ils l’information selon leur propre valeur intellectuelle, ne tenant pas compte de leur provenance ? Et existait-il une influence directe de l’un et de l’autre ? Cette étude tente ainsi de montrer les différents motifs de ces échanges à travers un champ contextuel constitué par un événement intellectuel précis. Nous verrons ainsi que ces relations vacillent entre méfiance et admiration. / This thesis sheds lights on collaborations and transfer of knowledge between Jewish and Christian scholars in France during the 13th and 14th centuries. We propose a comparative analysis of different exchanges, in three distinct areas: theological, philosophical and astronomical. Taking into account the Latin and Hebrew sources that testify this transmission of knowledge, we propose an in-depth study, dividing in two sections. The first part narrates the evolution of education in the Jewish communities and in Christian society. The second part analyses the context of the Extractiones de Talmut, the transmission of knowledge between Maimonides and Thomas Aquinas, the close collaboration between Jacob ben Makhir and Armengaud Blaise, as well as the significant intellectual exchange between Gersonides and his fellow Christians. Our objective is to answer the following questions: did Christian and Jewish scholars receive information according to their own intellectual value, ignoring their source? And was there a direct influence from one scholar towards the other? Thus, this study demonstrates the different motives of these exchanges through a contextual field constituted by a specific intellectual event. We will perceive that these relations vacillate between mistrust and admiration.
