Édition, traduction et commentaires / Juan Gil of Zamora ( OFM, + c. 1306), encyclopedic system and marian preaching : the sermones virginales. Edition, translation, commentary

Hamy-Dupont, Adrienne 30 September 2017 (has links)
Active at the end of the XIIIth century, he was linked with Alphonse the Xth’s and Sancho the IVth’s courts. Before playing an important part in his Franciscan Order he studied in Paris. This work provides with a translated and commented editio princeps of the sixteen marian sermons that could be listed. It goes with an introduction dealing with afresh biographical datas, thoughts on Gil’s encyclopedic system, marian production and homiletic discoveries

Alfonso el Sabio's ambitions and succession in the Castillian chronicles

Goertz, Wolf January 1961 (has links)
The second half of the thirteenth century is a rather obscure period in Spanish history. Only one fairly detailed Christian chronicle exists for the reign of each of the three kings that ruled during that time. Since these works were not composed until the middle of the following century, especially the earliest years which the author describes, the 1250's and 1260's, are full of anachronisms. The few other accounts that treat of the period are quite brief and of not much help. Alfonso el Sabio had until 1275 most extensive foriegn interests, and his plans have left many traces in the archives of other countries, especially of some of the city-states of Northern Italy. From these foreign accounts many obscure points in Alfonso's reign can be clarified, since it is precisely on the international plane where the Castilian chronicle of his reign fails. Taking Antonio Ballesteros y Beretta's work on the itinerary of Alfonso el Sabio as point of departure, the present essay tries to point out some of the shortcomings of Castilian fourteenth-century historiography. / Arts, Faculty of / Central Eastern Northern European Studies, Department of / Graduate

THE HEROIDES IN ALFONSO X'S GENERAL ESTORIA: TRANSLATION, ADAPTATION, USE, AND INTERPRETATION OF A CLASSICAL WORK IN A THIRTEENTH-CENTURY IBERIAN HISTORY OF THE WORLD

Benito, J. Javier Puerto 01 January 2008 (has links)
My dissertation analyzes the role of Ovid’s Heroides in Alfonso X’s General Estoria, a massive historical compilation in six volumes that the “Learned King” commissioned in 1272. The way in which eleven of these fictional epistles were incorporated by the Alfonsine translators sheds light on how ancient texts were perceived by medieval scholars. According to the study, King Alfonso relies on Ovid as an accurate historical source and uses the epistles of the heroines as historical documents while preserving their literary dimension. The thesis is divided into six sections. Chapter one introduces the topic of translation in relation to history and literature and argues for the use of a culturesemiotic perspective in the study of medieval translations. Chapter two looks into the General Estoria in order to frame the generic register/s to which the Heroides and Ovid belonged in Alfonso’s historic discourse. Some of these issues include literature and its historical value, and how the ancient past (in this case the times of characters in the Heroides) was used in order to investigate and interpret the concerns of the present, and form decisions about the future. Chapter three speculates on the bearing that the habitus or socio-cultural conditioning of a potential translator like Archbishop Jiménez de Rada could have had in the Alfonsine approach to translation. Chapter four analyzes the uses of and references to Ovid as a writer and his works throughout Europe in order to recreate the position both him and his works held in the socio-cultural milieu of thirteenth-century literature, history, epistolography, and rhetoric. Chapter five focuses on how the Latin text was initially adapted and segmented according to translation patterns and norms. This observational analysis of the Heroides in the GE approaches the text from the perspective of the discipline of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). My research does not seek to propose or refute any theories but, rather, to make a contribution to DTS in the form of an observational analysis.

La cultura monástica en las <i>Cantigas de Santa María</i> de Alfonso X

Disalvo, Santiago A. January 2008 (has links)

This research aims to address the terms ' honour ', ' honor ' and ' fame ' in Las Siete Partidas , aiming to understand their function within the legal framework provided by the work . Las Cantigas de Santa Maria: Thirteenth-Century Popular Culture and Acts of Subversion

Coats, Jerry Brian 08 1900 (has links)
Across medieval Europe, the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain traced a lattice web of popular culture. From the lowest peasant to the greatest king and churchmen, the devout walked pathways that created an economy and contributed to a social and political climate of change. Central to this impulse of piety and wanderlust was the veneration of the Virgin Mary. She was, however, not the iconic Mother of the New Testament whose character, actions, and very name are nearly absent from that first-century compilation of texts. As characterized in the words of popular songs and tales, the mariales, she was a robust saint who performed acts of healing that exceeded those miracles of Jesus described in the Bible. Unafraid and authoritative, she confronted demons and provided judgement that reached beyond the understanding and mercy of medieval codes of law. Holding out the promise of protection from physical and spiritual harm, she attracted denizens of admirers who included poets, minstrels, and troubadours like Nigel of Canterbury, John of Garland, Gonzalo de Berceo, and Gautier de Coinci. They popularized her cult across Europe; pilgrims sang their songs and celebrated the new attributes of Mary. This dissertation uses the greatest collection of these songs, Las Cantigas de Santa Maria compiled in the thirteenth century under the direction of Alfonso X, King of Castile and Leon, to construct the history of a lay piety movement deeply rooted in medieval popular culture. Making the transition from institutionalized, doctrinal saint to popular heroine, Mary becomes a subversive conduit through which culture moved from Latin poetry to vernacular verse and from the monasteries of scholasticism to the popular pathway of Wycliffite reform.

E por esta razon conuino que fuessen los reyes, e lo tomassen los omes por señores : uma análise da legitimidade, autoridade e poder no reinado de Alfonso X através das suas redes de negociações senhoriais (1252-1284) / E por esta razon conuino que fuessen los reyes, e lo tomassen los omes por señores : an analysis of legitimacy, authority and power in the reign of Alfonso X through his networks of seigneurial negotiations (1252-1284)

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / On May 31st, 1252, before the most important aristocrats of the kingdom, Alfonso X was crowned King of Castile and Leon in a public ceremony and detached from traditional sacralization rites of the medieval monarchies. The political trajectory of the Alfonsine reign was marked by periods of unrelenting conflicts and social tensions, the causes of these disruptions were directly linked to the production and attempt to establish a daring government program that sought above all to unify legislation and renew the right of the kingdom, something not effected. Faced with a political scenario of uprisings and the need to secure the support of his subjects for their demands for government, Alfonso X produced a range of legal rules - coercive and concessive - aimed at strengthening his royal authority, at the same time time in which it looked for legislative tools that made possible to rebalance its relation with the political society of the kingdom in an eternal game of powers. We have understood these aspects like something inherent to the noble negotiations that guided the relations between this monarch and the aristocracies secular and ecclesiastical of the period. When we take the characteristics presented above as the north of research and when analyzing a documentary corpus composed of chronicles and legal documents elaborated on and during the Alfonsine period, we had as objective in our research to examine the relations of negotiations developed by Alfonso X throughout his reign, looking for to understand the constant crises of monarchical authority, abyss of legitimacy and, consequently, the political and juridical actions established by him in the search for the realization of power. Thus, we could argue that political fragmentation did not mean the absence of legitimacy, authority, or power. On the contrary, decentralization only emphasized the mechanisms of negotiations, a fundamental aspect in the constitution and maintenance of seigniorial society in the Central Middle Ages.

This study aims to make a link between past and present, comparing morphophonological processes triggered by verbal inflection through the forms of the past tense of the indicative, that is, processes that alter the shape of morphemes and generate allomorphs at various levels in the Archaic Portuguese (AP) of XII-XIII centuries were investigated by Lexical Phonology (LP) and Autosegmental and Metrical Phonology. The past tense verb forms of the indicative mood both of regular and irregular verbs were considered as an object for this research. The methodology was based on the mapping of verb forms in the Cantigas de Santa Maria (CSM). We have also used glossaries, vocabularies, dictionaries, and especially the glossary of Mettmann (1972) as an aid in the categorization of verbal forms. Once collected, the data was separated according to the type of morphophonogical process checked. The corpus was formed by the Cantigas de Santa Maria (CSM), written in Galician-Portuguese and attributed to Don Alfonso X of Castile, the Wise, in collaboration with the troubadours, musicians, designers and miniaturists who lived in his court. The CSM correspond to the most elaborate literary monument, which occupies a privileged place in the medieval Galician-Portuguese literature. After the analysis of the morphophonological processes, in the results obtained, we verified the high productivity of vowel harmony and vowel neutralization and at an early stage of the language that corresponds to the archaic period. We could prove that the morphophonological processes, especially vowel harmony, have occurred since the initial stage of the Portuguese with the same characteristics and productivity of today, since in the passage from Latin to Portuguese, the verb conjugations were already well defined. In addition to the morphophonological processes, we also mapped the irregular verbs that we called... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Ovidio en la General Estoria de Alfonso X / Ovide dans la General Estoria d'Alphonse X / Ovid in Alfonso X's General Estoria

Salvo García, Irene 16 March 2012 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation “Ovid in Alfonso X’s General estoria” is to study the translation of the Latin poet in the universal history conceived within the workshop directed by Alfonso X during the last quarter of the 13th century (ca. 1270-1284). The aforementioned work intended to recount the history of man from Genesis up to the reign of King Alfonso himself. The main source of the General estoria is the Bible. Various pagan or “Gentile” (non-Jewish) notes are added to the biblical material. In the first two parts of the General estoria, the basic sources for the Gentile stories are Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Heroides. This usage is complimented by fragments of the Fasti, the Remedia Amori, the Ars Amatoria and the Epistulae ex Ponto. The study is also centred on the translation method of Ovid’s work as well as on the compilation techniques of the General estoria. Thus, the present dissertation is structured as follows: 1) an Introduction where the rules that characterize the reading of Ovid in the Middle Ages are described (ch. 1); 2) a study of the contextual elements of the Latin text in three sections: a study of the accessus, the glosses and commentaries that accompanied the Latin text in the medieval stage (ch. 2); an analysis of the mythographic works inserted in the compilation (ch. 3); finally; the description of the characteristics which define the employing of Ovid’s less used works: the Fasti, the Remedia Amori, the Ars Amatoria and the Epistulae ex Ponto (ch. 4). In the end, the second part of the dissertation (ch. 5) develops an exhaustive and detailed analysis of the fragments taken from Ovid’s works in the General estoria.
