Influence of Erosive and Abrasive Cycling on Bonding of Diferent Adhesive Systems Enamel: An in situ study

Ciccone Giacomini,Marina, Casas-Apayco, Leslie, Moreira Machado,Camila, Carvalho de Almendra Freitas,Maria Cristina, Atta,Maria Teresa, Wang, Linda January 1900 (has links)
This study evaluated the impact of orange juice on the bond strength (BS) of dentin bonding systems (DBSs) to enamel surface after simulation with an in situ/ ex vivo erosive cycling. One hundred and ninety two bovine enamel fragments (4x4x2 mm) were obtained and randomized regarding superficial microhardness and distributed to palatal devices for 8 volunteers, in three phases (one for each DBS), containing 8 blocks, which were, allocated in 4 pairs. Daily, these pairs were subjected extraorally to the following conditions: CONTneither erosive nor abrasive challenge; ERO- erosive challenge only; ABR- abrasive challenge only and ERO + ABR- with erosive and abrasive challenges. Erosive cycles (immersion in orange juice, 3 times/day/5 min/5 days) or/and abrasive challenges (electric toothbrush, 3 times/day/1 min/5 days) were performed. After these cycles, all specimens were restored with the adhesive systems Adper Scotchbond Multi Purpose (MP), Adper Single Bond 2 (SB) or Clearfil SE Bond (SE), and the composite resin Filtek Z250. After 7 days, sticks (area ≅1 mm2) were obtained and subjected to the microtensile bond strength test (μTBS) at 0.5 mm/min. Data was statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests (a=0.05). Failure modes were determined using a digital microscope (40×). DBS was the only statistical significant factor. SE was the unique DBS not affected in any challenge, whereas MP and SB performed according to the scenario. The adhesive and mixed failures were predominant in all groups. Overall performance suggested that BS to enamel after erosive /abrasive challenged by orange juice was not affected and it was material-dependent

Efeito do íon ferro na prevenção da erosão dentária: estudos in vitro e in situ / Effect of iron on the prevention of tooth wear: in vitro and in situ studies

Italiani, Flávia de Moraes 28 May 2010 (has links)
The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of iron (Fe+2) associated or not to fluoride (F-) on the reduction of bovine enamel and dentin erosion, as well as to develop and evaluate a dentifrice containing Fe+2 to prevent erosion associated to abrasion. Four subprojects were done: (1) In vitro determination of the protective effect of increasing Fe+2 concentrations (0 to 120 mmol/L) associated or not to F- (0 to 4 g/mL) against the dissolution of powdered enamel; (2) In vitro evaluation of the protective effect of 10 mol/L Fe+2 against the mineral dissolution of superficial bovine enamel; (3) Development and in vitro evaluation of fluorided dentifrices containing different Fe+2 concentrations in order to prevent the mineral loss of bovine enamel; and (4) In situ evaluation of the effect of a dentifrice containing Fe+2 and F- on the demineralization of sound or previously eroded bovine enamel and dentin. The response variables were quantification of phosphate loss (colorimetry) and tooth wear (perfilometry, m) for the subprojects 1 and 2, and 3 and 4, respectively. Data were submitted to statistical analyses (p <0.05). In subproject (1), two-way ANOVA and Bonferronis test revealed that solutions containing 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 30.0 mmol/L Fe+2 significantly reduced the dissolution of powdered enamel at 18, 18, 23, 35, 35 and 55%, respectively, in comparison to control (without Fe+2). In the presence of F-, the effect of Fe+2 on the dissolution of enamel was reduced and no synergistic effect between these ions was observed in the tested conditions. In Subproject (2), two-way ANOVA and Bonferronis test showed a significant reduction on surface demineralization of bovine enamel (around 30-40%), when the solution containing Fe+2 at 10 mmol/L was used. In Subproject (3), ANOVA revealed a significant difference among the groups (Placebo, 1,100 g/mL F, Crest®, 1.0 mg/g Fe+2, 2.5 mg/g Fe+2, 5.0 mg/g Fe+2, F- (1, 100 g/mL) + 1,0 mg/g Fe+2, F- (1100 g/mL) + 2,5 mg/g Fe+2 and F- (1,100 g/mL) + 5,0 mg/g Fe+2) (F=4,734, p<0,0001). The lowest wear (0.48±0.24 m) was observed when the dentifrice containing F + Fe was used. In Subproject (4), for sound enamel, two-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference among the dentifrices, (F=21.72, p<0.0001), but not among the conditions (erosion only, erosion + slurry, erosion + abrasion) (F=1.20, p=0.32) or for the interaction of both (F = 1.04, p=0.41). The Bonferronis test revealed that the blocks which received the dentifrice containing Fe+2 and F- presented significantly lesser wear when compared to the blocks submitted to the other dentifrices, which did not differ significantly among each other. As for sound dentin as well as for previously eroded enamel and dentin, the same pattern was obtained but the latter two presented wear values higher than those seen for the sound blocks.

Avaliação da prevalência de desgaste dentário em pacientes portadores de transtornos alimentares / Evaluation of prevalence of tooth wear in patients with eating disorders

Araújo, Juliana Julianelli de 29 August 2007 (has links)
Eating disorders are defined as deviations in eating habits that may lead to cachexy or obesity, besides other physical problems and inabilities. It corresponds to diagnoses of Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder. This study evaluated the prevalence and severity of tooth wear in patients assisted at GRATA (Group of Assistance to Eating Disorders) of the Clinics Hospital of Ribeirão Preto Medical School - USP (HCFMRP-USP). The sample included 30 patients with eating disorders assisted at GRATA. Data were collected with aid of a questionnaire containing structured questions, divided into two sections; the first contained information related to patient identification, and the second aimed to identify habits in the daily routine of patients, including questions on oral hygiene, oral and feeding habits, to investigate the association with different degrees of tooth wear, using the adapted tooth wear index (TWI). The results were statistically analyzed by absolute and relative frequencies. The Mann Whitney test for independent samples was applied (p<0.05). All patients with eating disorders in this study presented some degree of tooth wear; the occlusal/incisal tooth aspect was the most affected, with severity of tooth wear in dentine corresponding to 66.7%. Concerning the buccal aspect, 13.3% exhibited some tooth wear degree 4. The lingual surface presented prevalence of tooth wear with pulp involvement of 13.4%. The habit of tooth clenching and grinding had significant association with tooth wear on the occlusal aspect (p=0.02 and p=0.01, respectively). Thus, it was concluded that patients with eating disorders may present tooth wear of different degrees. The dentist may contribute with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of tooth alterations, providing benefits to the oral and general health of these patients.

Indicadores de risco associados à prevalência de erosão dentária em pré-escolares no Município de Diadema, São Paulo / Risk indicators associated to the prevalence of dental erosion in preschool children in Diadema, São Paulo

Murakami, Christiana 04 December 2009 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence, distribution and severity of erosive lesions in a sample of 36 to 59-month-old children in the city of Diadema, São Paulo. Moreover, the association between dental erosion prevalence and socioeconomic, environmental, nutritional, behavioral, and child characteristics variables was investigated. Trained and calibrated dentists (interexaminer Kappa = 0.77 for dental erosion and interexaminer Kappa = 0.83 for dental caries) examined 967 children in the Basic Health Units (BHU) of the city of Diadema during the first stage of the National Childrens Vaccination Day in 2008. Dental erosion, dental caries and nutritional status were assessed through the use of a modified version of the OBrien (1994) index, Knutson (1944) index, and the WHO Child Growth Standards (2006), respectively. Variables associated to the prevalence of dental erosion were investigated using a questionnaire that was specifically developed for the present research, based on the literature. Statistical analysis was conducted through univariate and multivariate regressions based on a hierarchical model (p<0.05). Dental erosion prevalence was of 51.6% and most of the erosive lesions observed were confined to the enamel (82,5%). Erosive lesions were more prevalent in the upper incisors than in lower molars and a symmetrical pattern of distribution was noted. The final hierarchical logistic model revealed a significant association between dental erosion prevalence and the consumption of soft drinks twice (OR = 0.78; CI 95%: 0.43-1.40; p= 0.043) or three or more (OR=1.74; CI 95%; 1.02-2.99; p=0.023) times a day, juice intake on the last two days before the study (OR=1.55; CI 95%; 1.11-2.16; p=0.009), the presence of frequent reported gastroesophageal reflux (OR=2.06; CI 95%; 1.24-3.41; p=0.005) and increasing age (OR=1.48; CI 95%; 1.15-1.92; p=0.003). No statistically significant associations were found between dental erosion prevalence and socioeconomic, environmental or nutritional variables. In conclusion, a high prevalence of dental erosion was found in this population of preschool children, which was associated with frequent consumption of acidic beverages, frequent episodes of reported gastroesophageal reflux, and an increase in age.

Remineralização e desmineralização erosiva do esmalte considerando diferentes tempos de ação salivar e dispositivos intrabucais: estudo in situ / Enamel erosive Remineralization and demineralization considering different times of salivary action and intraoral appliances: In situ study

Mendonça, Fernanda Lyrio 10 April 2015 (has links)
The protective potential of saliva has been described as an important factor that influences the pathogenesis of dental erosion. The aim of this study was to evaluate in situ the remineralizing effect of saliva on initial erosion lesions and the protective effect of saliva in relation to erosive enamel desmineralization, using palatal and mandibular appliances in different times of salivary exposure (30 min, 1h, 2h e 12h). This study consisted of two subprojects, each one with a sample size of 20 volunteers. In subproject I, after initial surface hardness evaluation, enamel blocks were demineralized in vitro (hydrochloric acid 0.01 M for 30 seconds), selected and randomly assigned between two types of appliances. Four blocks were placed on the palatal device and two blocks for the mandibular appliance (2 aplliances per volunteer / right and left). In the in situ phase, the volunteers were instructed to use the palatal and mandibular appliances for 12 hours, so that after every predetermined period of time, the enamel blocks were removed from the appliances for immediate evaluation of surface hardness (remineralization surface hardness). In subproject II, enamel blocks were selected using initial surface hardness and randomized among the volunteers according to factors time (30 min, 1h, 2h, and 12h) and types of intrabucal aplliance (palatal and mandibular). A control group with enamel blocks not subjected to salivary effect was also used. In in situ phase, the volunteers used intrabucal appliances with two enamel blocks in the palatal appliance (1 appliance per volunteer) and one block in each mandibular appliance (2 aplliances per volunteer / right and left). Imeddiatelly after use in each phase, the enamel blocks were desmineralized and the surface hardness was assessed. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey test subproject I; Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey test subproject II, considering p<0.05. In subproject I, was observed a significant difference (p <0.0001) between 30 minutes and 2 hours, which showed no difference comparing to 12 hours. There was no significant difference in hardness recovery between specimens kept in the maxilla and mandibula. In subproject II, no significant difference was seen between the types of intraoral appliances. However, when times were compared, there was no difference between 30 minutes and 2 hours, which showed no difference compared to the 12 hours. Significant difference was found when the periods of 2 hours and 12 hours were compared with the control group (without exposure to saliva), for both, palatal and mandibular aplliances. Therefore, regardless of the type of appliance, 2 hours of salivary exposure showed remineralizing potential, as well as promoted some level of protection in relation to erosive enamel demineralization, and increased enamel exposure to saliva (12 hours) did not increase these effects.

Efeitos de um medicamento antiasmático potencialmente erosivo no esmalte e dentina de dentes decíduos: estudo in situ / Effects of a potentially erosive anti-asthmatic medication on enamel and dentin of primary teeth: an in situ study

Camila Scatena 24 October 2014 (has links)
Prolonged use of acidic drugs in the oral cavity of children with chronic disorders cause concern, because of the risk of dental erosion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in situ effect of a long term relief anti-asthmatic drug (salbutamol sulphate) on enamel and dentin of primary teeth. Deciduous molars were sectioned to obtain slabs of enamel and dentin (3 x 3 x 2 mm) of the crowns. The slabs were sterilized, embedded in epoxy resin and polished planned under refrigeration and inspected by an optical microscope for the presence of cracks. Twenty-eight specimens of enamel and dentin 28 were selected and stored. The Knoop microhardness, roughness and 3D morphology of the baseline surfaces were examined. Fourteen volunteers wore palatal appliances containing two specimens of dentin and two specimens of enamel, positioned in niches 1 mm below the surface on the right and left sides. In this split mouth experiment, the subjects underwent surface treatment 3 times per day (8 h, 12 h and 17 h) for 5 days, dripping ex vivo 5 ml of salbutamol sulphate for 1 min in only one side of the palatal device, defined by lottery. After the end of the experiment, the specimens were removed from the palatal device and were verified the microscopic morphology, roughness, confocal profilometry and Knoop microhardness of the dentin and enamel surfaces. The results were evaluated by the nonparametric Friedman test using the median difference of the final and initial values for all analyses. For the primary enamel surfaces exposed to the drug were observed erosion on microscopy images, the mean increase in roughness (p = 0.0325) and tooth surface loss (p = 0.03251) and a significant decrease in microhardness (p = 0.0325) compared to the control group. Dentin erosion was observed only in microscopy images. There was not observed a significant increase of dentin roughness (p = 0.593) and tooth surface loss (p = 0.285) or microhardness decrease (p = 0.1088). It can be concluded that the salbutamol sulphate had an in situ erosive effect on enamel of primary teeth and on dentin of primary teeth this effect was observed only morphologically.
