The significance of rural areas in South Africa for tourism development through community participation with special reference to Umgababa, a rural area located in the province of KwaZulu-NatalGopaul, Mohan 30 November 2006 (has links)
The aim of this study was to determine the role of tourism, empowerment and participation
in the socio-economic upliftment of the community of Umgababa. The research examines
the views of the community on their socio-economic conditions, their willingness to
participate in tourism business ventures and their perceptions and attitude towards
communicating with other rural communities on tourism development. The study concludes
that the socio-economic living conditions of the community of Umgababa are very poor
and that empowerment and participation of the community in tourism could be an answer
to their problems. Given the opportunity, the majority of the people were willing to
participate in a tourism business venture. Investigation revealed that there is an abundance
of natural and human resources in Umgababa to start a tourism business. The community
also felt that by communicating their knowledge and experience they would be able to help
other communities in their own development. / Geography / MA (Geography)

The socio-economic analysis of agritourism in two rural communities in the Limpopo provinceMnguni, Khehla Isaac 01 1900 (has links)
The main aim of the study was to analyze the socio-economic variables effecting agritourism business using data from two rural communities of the Limpopo province, Nwa’metwa and Lenyenye. The results showed that there are significant socio-economic differences among agritourism and non-agritourism farmers. The socio-economic variables used are literacy, gender, age, land size and family size.
Two multinomial models were used to model agritourism behavior. The two models, namely fully and partially registered agritourism farmers were estimated. Non-registered agritourism farmers were used as the reference group. These models denoted the relative probability of both fully and partially registered agritourism farmers to the probability of the non-registered agritourism farmers.
The logarithm results implied that older farmers were less likely to prefer to operate business as a fully or partially registered agritourism farmer compared to the non-registered agritourism group. Farmers’ decisions in business operation were informed by their level of education, experience as well as social networks. / Agriculture, Animal Health & Human Ecology / M. Sc. (Agriculture)

Community Ltd. and the spirit of ethno-enterprise : exploring cultural branding and incorporation among the MakulekeVan Zyl, Izak Jakobus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Sociology and Social Anthropology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, I examine the case study of the Makuleke in Limpopo province. This community
entered the public spotlight when it regained its former homeland in the Kruger National Park. It
currently partakes in an extensive programme on ‘responsible tourism’ via commercial
expansion. This concession allows (or is supposed to allow) for increased community
development and economic growth in the Makuleke region. The community has become more
business-like in their approach to this concession. This process is encapsulated by the
formalisation of the land management structures in what I refer to as Makuleke Inc. Makuleke
Inc. has at its heart a ‘cultural business’, of which an ‘authentic Makuleke’ is presented and
traded. I detail the production of unique, bona fide culture through branding (that is, commercial
representation). This practice contributes to new or different configurations of identity and
collective belonging.
teruggewen is. Tans is dit betrokke by ‘n omvattende program in ‘verantwoordelike toerisme’
deur middel van kommersiële ontwikkeling. Hierdie konsessie dra by (of is veronderstel om by
Hierdie proses
Makuleke Inc. (ingelyf). Makuleke Inc. is as’t ware ‘n ‘kulturele onderneming’, waar ‘n ‘egte
Hierdie proses dra by tot

Tourism-focused micro-enterprises in the Eastern Cape : problems and progress in an African perspectiveBamber, Sarah 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDF)--Stellenbosch University, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research project has been to investigate support provision for tourism-focused
micro-enterprise development in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, and to evaluate the
effectiveness of available support in assisting emerging micro-entrepreneurs to break into the
tourism industry. General trends in the tourism sector are discussed, in relation to the province as a
whole and more specifically concerning the areas in which research was undertaken, highlighting
prospects for potential growth of the sector and its contribution to the local economy. Results of a
survey undertaken among Eastem Cape tourism micro-enterprises are presented, and findings
further explored through in-depth case studies and a sector sub-survey of crafters. Currently
available support programmes are then assessed in terms of their relevance for the microenterprise
sector and constraints identified. The research reveals that although the volume of
assistance available may appear to be great, little of real significance is currently reaching
emerging micro-entrepreneurs. Recommendations for future programmes to more effectively
address the needs of tourism-focused micro-entrepreneurs are made.
sektor sal so 'n deurbraak in ander Afrikalande heelwat langer neem en inisi~el heel selektief
ptaasvind.

A foundation to the development of an economic impact study of the tourism industry for GHACTBrink, Zonia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This document contains a Situation Analysis of tourism in the Greater Hermanus
region, which is part of the Overberg region in the Western Cape Province, South
Africa. It forms an essential component of the process to develop a Tourism Policy
and Strategy for the local tourism bureau.
As such it is important to note that the objectives of the document are threefold.
Firstly, it provides overall background information and an analysis of the current
tourism situation of Hermanus, the various role-players and the different festivals.
Secondly, it provides a broad framework of the positive and negative impacts tourism
and festivals could have on the economic, social and environmental fields of a tourist
destination like Hermanus. Lastly, the document offers guidelines for future study
areas under which the tourist, various role-players and festivals/events can be
evaluated in order to calculate their impacts in the Hermanus tourism industry. These
goals were to be established in subsequent interactive workshops, discussions,
interviews and other inputs from the various community representatives and other
tourism role-players in Greater Hermanus.
The scope of this report is limited to an overall framework and broad guidelines to put
festival and role-player evaluation, and impact management for the Greater
Hermanus region on a firm platform and continuous footing.
At this phase of the project specific recommendations and proposals for development
of the tourism industry in the region are excluded, as this will form part of the further
phases of the project of developing the Tourism Policy and Strategy. Based on the
findings it is recommended that the local tourism bureau must focus on developing a
sustainable tourism strategy, identify a single spokesperson that is recognised as the
leading force for unifying the industry towards one goal, and lastly to develop and
maintain a knowledge base system to ensure proper planning and support decisionmaking.
The document concludes by summarising the recommendations along with a
list of the key issues and strategic challenges that needs to be addressed.
Hierdie doelwitte is daargestel tydens werksessies,
toerisme strategie moet ontwikkel.

An investigation into the evaluation of the Hermanus Whale Festival as part of the GHACT economic impact studyBohn, Helga 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study forms part of the GHACT economic impact study by the University of
Stellenbosch. It is an investigation into the evaluation of the Hermanus Whale
Festival, which forms an integral part of the Greater Hermanus tourism industry.
The study highlights that the tourism industry of Greater Hermanus is faced with
important challenges in managing its events as part of the tourism industry to benefit
all. The ultimate success of events depends on leadership, co-ordination and team
spirit between organisers, the host community and the sponsors.
Upon the investigation into event evaluation and after consultation with the
stakeholders it is recommended that the festival organisers must take the lead in
future evaluations and co-ordinate the evaluation process. The festival organisers will
have to involve all stakeholders as they offer a useful resource for event evaluation.
The study includes the visitor survey, completed during the festival, which explored
visitor characteristics, expenditure and perceptions.
Based on all findings that the study has highlighted, it is recommended that the
festival organisers must develop a festival strategy in co-ordination with all
stakeholders. Further more, it is imperative that the festival management has insight
into its target market and therefore uses market research to build market intelligence.
This will be a useful input in developing the strategic direction as well as the
marketing function to support the achievement of the festival's goals and objectives.
The document concludes with argumentation for the implementation of market
research and strategy and outlines the process for developing such a strategy.

Exploring the perceived flooding impacts on tourist accommodation establishments in the Limpopo province, South AfricaSouthon, Mercia Patricia January 2017 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree
of Master of Science.
School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies (GAES). Johannesburg, October 2017. / Climate and weather-related impacts have become widespread particularly affecting the
tourism industry. Changes in the climate and weather lead to changes in tourist seasons,
products and travel opportunities. Flooding has gained research attention over the past decade,
since the destruction creates many challenges for tourism businesses. Floods are a growing
global problem, increasing in terms of frequency of occurrence, property damages, business
economic losses, and fatalities. South Africa has begun to experience many annual flood events
both coastal and in-land, but the Limpopo Province has been declared as flood disaster area,
since the increase in temperatures and precipitation. Interest now lies on how particular tourist
destinations in the Limpopo Province can adapt to reduce flooding risks whilst increasing
opportunities mainly for the economy. Debates around flooding costs, recovery processes, and
adaptive capacities affirm to be more challenging for the tourism accommodation sector. The
study aimed to explore the perceived flooding impacts on different types of tourist
accommodation. Thus, to determine if floods hindered any tourist bookings, offerings, and
tourist length of stay. The exploration verified the possible flood risks to vulnerable
accommodation and no adequate adaptation plans. A purposeful sample of 145 tourist
accommodation businesses located across three flood-prone regions of the Limpopo Province
were selected to answer a semi-structured questionnaire to put across their flooding experiences
from a management perspective. The semi-structured questionnaire was combined with
telephone interviews and email responses. Coherent theme development within the theoretical
framework was achieved through content analysis. Content analysis allowed for the critical
discussion of deductive and inductive themes found in the results. Floods during peak-seasons
threaten and affect tourist accommodation, leaving them behind in business. Those not affected
benefit with increased tourist demand and new opportunities in the hospitality industry. Tourist
accommodation businesses are exposed to flood risks and experience challenges to assess,
recover and adapt from the direct and indirect impacts. Alongside the destruction of tourism in
these regions, were concerns of the provision of flood mapping and flood management plans
for tourism businesses. Wider flooding impacts on the environment and the surrounding local
communities demonstrates a growing problem for the future.
