Thermodynamic modeling and optimization of a screw compressor chiller and cooling tower system

This thesis presents a thermodynamic model for a screw chiller and cooling tower system for the purpose of developing an optimized control algorithm for the chiller plant. The thermodynamic chiller model is drawn from the thermodynamic models developed by Gordon and Ng (1996). However, the entropy production in the compressor is empirically related to the pressure difference measured across the compressor. The thermodynamic cooling tower model is the Baker & Shryock cooling tower model that is presented in ASHRAE Handbook - HVAC Systems and Equipment (1992). The models are coupled to form a chiller plant model which can be used to determine the optimal performance. Two correlations are then required to optimize the system: a wet-bulb/setpoint correlation and a fan speed/pump speed correlation. Using these correlations, a "quasi-optimal" operation can be achieved which will save 17% of the energy consumed by the chiller plant.

Development of Meteorological Towers Using Advanced Composite Materials

The research program involved both numerical and experimental work. The numerical analysis was conducted to simulate the static and dynamic behaviour of the 81 m meteorological FRP guyed tower under wind and ice loading. The FRP tower consisted of 16 segments each made of 3 cells connected together to form an equilateral triangle having equal sides of 450 mm. The segments were interconnected using internal sleeves. Various non-linear finite element models were developed to study a number of design parameters for the 81 m FRP tower such as, different laminates containing a variety of stacking sequences of laminate orientations with various thicknesses, different cable diameters, and appropriate guy cable spacing levels. The effect of pre-stressing the guy cables up to 10 % of their breaking strength was investigated. The effect of fibre volume fraction on the design of the FRP tower was also examined. Furthermore, an 8.6 m FRP tower segment was designed using the finite element analysis and subject to the same loading conditions experienced by the bottom section of the 81 m FRP tower. A modal analysis was carried out for both the 8.6 m FRP tower segment with and without a mass on the top as well as for the 81 m FRP guyed tower to evaluate the vibration performance of these towers. The experimental work involved extensive material testing to define the material properties for use in the analysis of the 81 m FRP tower. It also involved the design and fabrication of a special collapsible mandrel for fabricating the FRP cells for the 8.6 m tower segment. The 8.6 m tower was tested horizontally under static lateral loading to 80 % of its estimated failure load using a “whiffle tree” arrangement, in order to simulate a uniformly distributed wind loading. Later, the same FRP tower was erected in a vertical position and was tested with and without a mass on top under dynamic loading to obtain the natural frequencies. Lastly, a comparative study was conducted between two 81 m FRP towers having different fibre volume fractions and a steel tower having a circular cross section.

"Trusting the Faithful and Discreet Slave: A Critique of the Authority of the Jehovah's Witnesses"

Jehovah's Witnesses claim to be the sole advocates for God's truth at this point in redemptive history. Basing this belief on their interpretation of Matthew 24:45-47 and Luke 12:42-45, the Watchtower Society proclaims that their organization is led by "the faithful and discreet slave" (FDS) of the end times. This FDS is the Governing Body of the Society, which has been charged with the responsibility of providing spiritual food for Jehovah's people. According to the Witnesses, to discount the message of the FDS is to ignore the voice of God. History reveals that the identity and the message of the FDS have changed since the conception of the Watchtower organization. The movement's founder, Charles Taze Russell, was first known as the FDS of Matthew 24 but lost the title after his death when the new leader of the group shifted the identity away from an individualistic understanding to a corporate one. After proclaiming for the bulk of the organization's history that the 144,000 anointed Witnesses were the FDS, the Society recently changed their understanding of this end times' servant in 2012. Currently, the FDS is only the anointed Witness men that are serving on the Governing Body of the Society. This progressive shift in the organization's understanding of the FDS and the eventual disappearance of these anointed Witnesses continues to necessitate theological realignments, which in turn lays the apologetic groundwork for evangelism to the Jehovah's Witnesses. As redemptive history continues to unfold, the Watchtower Society will be forced to clarify or reinterpret many of their foundational teachings. Such reinvention further opens the apologetic door for evangelism among disillusioned Witnesses. When the Watchtower organization again searches to recast their leadership along with their message, authentic Christians must be ready and seeking to direct Witnesses to the unchanging message of the gospel.

Tellus Tower ska ta Telefonplan till nya höjder : En studie om Telefonplans omvandling under de senaste åren

Denna uppsats syftar till att undersöka initiativen bakom planerna för det kommande Tellus Tower, vars planområde är beläget vid Telefonplan i Stockholm. Därutöver granskas de effekter som sedan 2000-talets början har skapat platsens kreativa miljö. Studiens frågeställningar lyder (1) Vilka är de bakomliggande orsakerna till att Telefonplan idag kan liknas vid ett kreativt rum? (2) Varför planeras Tellus Tower att anläggas just på denna plats? Till grund för arbetes empiriska material har ett kvalitativt metodsätt använts, i form av djupintervjuer. Telefonplan som lokalitet har på kort tid genomgått en gentrifieringsprocess, från ett tidigare industrikluster till att idag främst förenas av ledorden kreativitet och nyskapande. Uppsatsens teoretiska ramverk behandlar följaktligen, med överskådlig karaktär, olika typer av gentrifiering. Uppsatsen visar på att det är de sociala processerna som har förändrat rummet och hur vi idag uppfattar platsen som kreativ. Vidare kan Tellus Tower liknas vid ett tilltänkt landmärke för Stockholm och den symboliska funktion en skyskrapa innebär.
