Language, identity and preservation : the case of African languages with special reference to TshivenḓaSikhweni, Nndwakhulu Michael 06 1900 (has links)
The research in this dissertation explored the demise of African languages of South Africa, Tshivenḓa in particular. The Vhavenḓa are historically one of the ethnic groups which have been in South Africa for a long time. The economic activities at Mapungubwe have ensured that they are able to absorb some of the small groups that came to the area to conduct business with them. Due to frequent tribal clashes, the Vhavenḓa resorted, for strategic reasons, to living in mountainous areas. They also refused to work for the Europeans. This exclusion from other ethnic groups kept their language and identity pure. Ethnic clashes gradually faded and the economy called for a new lifestyle. At the same time, South Africa was developing into a nation and men from the Vhavenḓa ethnic group started migrating to various parts of South Africa in search of jobs. Some of these men were lost to their host ethnic groups. Women, however, remained as the reserve of the language. The economy, both nationally and globally, is permanently in a state of change and now male and female youth are migrating to the cities. The care of the language is thus left to senior citizens while the youth – who should be the future of the language – disappear to the cities. All these factors contributed to the demise of Tshivenḓa. This research explores the causes of the demise of African languages in South Africa, with specific reference to Tshivenḓa; and concludes by suggesting various ways in which Tshivenḓa as a language can be preserved. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

Magister Legum - LLM / Land allocation and administration is a crucial role for traditional leaders, because it has remained one of the few de facto powers and sources of influence still available to them in their areas of jurisdictions.1 This role has been played by traditional leaders from time immemorial. Furthermore, the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa recognises the existence of traditional leaders.2 Moreover, the Constitution seeks to integrate the institution of traditional leadership by expecting national legislation to be put in place so that the roles of traditional leaders are known in society.3 However, roles with regard to the allocation and administration of land by traditional leaders have not been promulgated in legislation. Therefore, this research will look at the issues of land allocation and administration by traditional leadership in the democratic dispensation.

Assessment of the role of traditional leadership in facilitating community development in rural MalawChinkonda, Sosten Sylvester Joseph January 2012 (has links)
The study was carried out to assess the extent to which the intervention of traditional leaders is effective in mobilising support for community development projects and to examine the perceptions that communities have about the role of the traditional leaders in development projects. The study has been guided by the critique of neoliberalism which exposes the negative effects of implementing the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) in Third World countries. The literature that has been reviewed has looked at the historical and political background of the role of chiefs and other traditional leaders in order to assess the nature of participation that is promoted through their involvement in development projects. An overview of the neo-liberal prescription and its critique has been made in order to expose the effects of the oil embargo of 1973 and the debt crisis of the 1980s on the economies of Third World countries in general and Malawi in particular. On the basis of evidence which has been gathered through a survey and focus group discussion, the study has found that the intervention of traditional leaders is very effective in mobilising communities for development projects. It has further been established that communities have high regard for their traditional leaders and that they perceive them as crucial role players in the conception and implementation of development projects. The study has however established that traditional leaders use unorthodox means such as threats of punishment to solicit the cooperation of the community members which in essence is counterproductive to the participatory approach to development.

Violent community protests and their impact on teachers : a case study of Vuwani, Limpopo ProvinceMushoma, Tshililo 10 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English and Nyanja / Violent community protests are a common occurrence in South Africa ever since
democracy. The aim of the study was to determine teachers’ views on the impact of
violent community protests in a specific high school. Ineffective municipality leadership
led to violent community protests which disrupted schooling activities. A qualitative
design and one case study was employed in this study, and data were collected using
individual interviews, observation and document analysis. Differences in ethnicity
between community members and lack of service delivery were the cause of
community protests. The study revealed that vandalising and burning down schools
affect teachers’ ability to work. This study contributes to the body of knowledge to
create safer learning environments in South African schools. Recommendations were
made on how the community could work together and strengthen their relationship in
