Examining the implementation of an Emotional Literacy Programme on the pedagogy and reflective practice of trainee teachers

Davis, Susan January 2012 (has links)
This study investigated trainee teachers’ delivery of a targeted programme entitled ‘Special Me Time’ (SMT) whilst on teaching placements in Foundation Phase settings in South Wales, over a training year. As reflective practice formed an integral part of the research, the study also aimed to discover whether students reflected effectively on their practice by employing specific reflective practice skills. The teaching experiences of two BA Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Year 3 students and six PGCE ITT students were scrutinised, primarily through examination of student reflective diaries and lesson evaluations. In addition, the study explored the rationale for the further development of good practice in pedagogy related to Personal and Social Development, Well -Being and Emotional Literacy (PSD/WB/EL) and reflective practice in the School of Education of a large university. The analysis of results revealed two common themes: Theme one related to the development of students’ pedagogical practice and to the teaching and facilitation of PSD/WB/EL during ‘Special Me Time’ (SMT). Theme two related to students’ use of reflective practice to assess and reflect upon teaching performance and competencies relating to PSD/WB/EL as part of the SMT programme. Findings from research showed that students gained in knowledge relating to PSD/WB/EL from undertaking the ‘Special Me Time’ programme. However, students found it difficult to effectively quantify the differences that the programme made. Students were aware however, that they were spending what they termed ‘quality time’ with the children. Students appreciated the concept of reflective practice, but often did not reflect upon or credit themselves with pedagogical achievements as a result of this process. Although student reflection was evident, students did not use reflection as a fundamental part of their practice. They often viewed reflection as superfluous and either did not wholly engage in the concept or undertook it but did not document the process fully, often engaging in what I termed ‘shallow reflection’. The study concludes by recommending that further research should be conducted in this area. Further evaluation of the benefits of equipping all ITT primary students regardless of age specialism chosen, with skills and knowledge in relation to teaching/facilitating PSD/WB/EL would be pertinent. The importance of ITT students developing skills and knowledge in order to integrate reflective practice into their professional practice is particularly significant. Findings from this research will inform future delivery of ITT primary programmes.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Cleonice de Almeida Cunha Lussich.pdf: 3482540 bytes, checksum: 11ff04aefe642472928f4e4397182e0d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-25 / The purpose of this thesis was to make explicit the formative value and meaning of the compulsory supervised internship for graduates of a Distance Education course in order to construct the knowledge necessary for the practice, as well as the process of constitution of the professional identity of the pedagogue. The qualitative research carried out a study about the proposal and development of the compulsory supervised internship of a Distance Education course of a Community Higher Education Institution located in São Paulo and the collaborating subjects were graduates, graduates, coordinator and teachers/tutors of said course. The instruments for data collection were: application of a questionnaire to delineate the profile of the graduates, conduct interviews with the graduates and elaborate reports of experience by the coordinator and teachers. We also carried out an analysis of the literature and documentary review of the history of distance education in the educational context of the National Curricular Guidelines for Pedagogy, as well as the principles and fundamentals of the supervised internship of the course investigated. The theoretical contributions were anchored, mainly, in authors as: Bahia (2012, 2013, 2015); Pimenta (2009); Pimenta and Lima (2010); Gatti (2009; 2010), Gatti, Barreto and André (2011); Libano (2003, 2004, 2006); Lima (2012); Moran (2009; 2011; 2013); Piconez (2005); Scheibe (2006; 2007); Silva (2003); Tardif (2000, 2003) and Zabalza (2014). The research data evidenced that the experience of the internship in the distance pedagogy course of the investigated institution is configured as a space/time of construction of teacher knowledge and professional identity, considering some differentials of the modality, observed and analyzed, and that indicate the concern with the formative quality. It was also possible to infer that institutions that work with teacher training in the distance modality cannot be generically classified as certifiers and offer a light training, since it is necessary to carefully analyze the proposition, the assumptions, the procedures of the pedagogical projects, the development of the classes, the activities proposed, the monitoring and evaluation of the graduates, the virtual environment and the available materials, among other very specific issues of this type of education. In general, the results indicate that the course under study presents conditions for adequate training and is adjusted to the official guidelines and that, despite the observation of some gaps and limitations, there is scope for overcoming these.

Mokytojų darbo ypatumai teikiant profesinį išsilavinimą specialiųjų poreikių mokiniams / Peculiarities of teachers’ work, supply vocational education to students having special needs

Paciukonytė, Edita 24 September 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The long lasting attitude that problems connected with special needs people is their and their family business and these people are useless to the society, the new civilized view of society changes. A person having special needs as strong as they could be has the same rights as the others: to live the same homes as the rest, to learn in the same schools, to work the same jobs and to have the same possibilities. There are the students having special needs, because in the context of life quality the learning process and self – realization are very important. One of the most complicated tasks and acute specialized as well as general pedagogic and psychology and the whole society’s problems – to prepare a person to life, future job, having in mind requirements for nowadays and future economy.
