What method can be used to broaden IT systems towards new markets? : Development of a development process with application in a case study.

Poyraz, Furkan, Sakalouski, Pavel January 2017 (has links)
Within each activity, there is always some kind of project planning when you want to do business in a new market. These types of preparation are done in different ways and the challenge for companies is to make use of the right establishment strategy. To succeed in implementing a project, on the respective market that organizations are working on, one of the success factors is to have a clear and thoughtful approach. The company Beta offers cloud-based customs management services, which provide solutions that help other companies handle their customs issues. Beta is established in the Swedish market and wants to try to offer their IT solutions in Norway. The company therefore has a need to investigate how the Norwegian market looks, if there is an opportunity to broaden their existing system solutions and, if so, how they should go about getting a working system that can communicate with the Norwegian customs office. The report proposes a method that can be used as a basis for expanding a business to new markets. The development process presented should also be generalized, serve as a basis, and used by other companies facing the same challenge as Beta. This report also contains an analysis of the Norwegian market. There is a comparison between parts of the Swedish and Norwegian customs system and a presentation of the changes that need to be made based on differences. As a result, the report provides a clear picture of how one might possibly be able to address similar problems. The project members also present a result describing a solution to Beta's problems.

API development for persistent data sessions support

Pailom, Chayutra 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis studies and discusses the development of the API, called the persistency API, for supporting the persistent data sessions. Without persistent session support, network applications often need to be restarted from the beginning when intermittent physical connection loss happens. Application programmers can use the persistency API to achieve the service continuity. The persistency API provides the interface that allows a program to continue retrieve data from the point the connection is lost after the physical connection is restored. The focus of this thesis is to develop a generalized persistency API that supports various types of applications. This thesis studies the persistent session support for two types of transport protocols, TCP and UDP, which are used by major network applications. An application that performs text file and video file transfer is implemented to demonstrate the persistent data transfer sessions for TCP and UDP, respectively. The study shows that the proposed APIs can support the data transfer continuity in the reconnection process. / Captain, Royal Thai Army

Congestion Control for Streaming Media

Chung, Jae Won 18 August 2005 (has links)
"The Internet has assumed the role of the underlying communication network for applications such as file transfer, electronic mail, Web browsing and multimedia streaming. Multimedia streaming, in particular, is growing with the growth in power and connectivity of today's computers. These Internet applications have a variety of network service requirements and traffic characteristics, which presents new challenges to the single best-effort service of today's Internet. TCP, the de facto Internet transport protocol, has been successful in satisfying the needs of traditional Internet applications, but fails to satisfy the increasingly popular delay sensitive multimedia applications. Streaming applications often use UDP without a proper congestion avoidance mechanisms, threatening the well-being of the Internet. This dissertation presents an IP router traffic management mechanism, referred to as Crimson, that can be seamlessly deployed in the current Internet to protect well-behaving traffic from misbehaving traffic and support Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of delay sensitive multimedia applications as well as traditional Internet applications. In addition, as a means to enhance Internet support for multimedia streaming, this dissertation report presents design and evaluation of a TCP-Friendly and streaming-friendly transport protocol called the Multimedia Transport Protocol (MTP). Through a simulation study this report shows the Crimson network efficiently handles network congestion and minimizes queuing delay while providing affordable fairness protection from misbehaving flows over a wide range of traffic conditions. In addition, our results show that MTP offers streaming performance comparable to that provided by UDP, while doing so under a TCP-Friendly rate."

Roskvist, Filip, Roskvist, Anton January 2012 (has links)
This report concerns the subject of file transfer. The focal point of the report is to study the effect that the MTU has on the speed of file transfers based on the protocol used and the size of the transferred files. During the course of the work, several experiments have been performed in order to determine this, as well as to find which protocol gives the overall best result based on the circumstances of the file transfers. Various file transfer protocols, file distribution protocols, MTUs and file sizes have been tested in order to find what results in the best file transfer speed over an Ethernet based network. The results show that a high MTU has the best performance when transferring large files, while a standard MTU gives better results for transferring very small files.

Performance Modelling Of TCP-Controlled File Transfers In Wireless LANs, And Applications In AP-STA Association

Pradeepa, B K 03 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Our work focuses on performance modelling of TCP-controlled file transfers in infrastructure mode IEEE 802.11 wireless networks, and application of the models in developing association schemes. A comprehensive set of analytical models is used to study the behaviour of TCP-controlled long and short file transfers in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. The results can provide insight into the performance of TCP-controlled traffic in 802.11 WLANs in a variety of different network environments. First, we consider several WLAN stations associated at rates r1, r2, ...,rk with an Access Point. Each station (STA) is downloading a long file from a local server, located on the LAN to which the AP is attached, using TCP. We assume that a TCP ACK will be produced after the reception of d packets at an STA. We model these simultaneous TCP-controlled transfers using a semi-Markov process. Our analytical approach leads to a procedure to compute aggregate download as well as per-STA throughputs numerically, and the results match simulations very well. Performance analysis of TCP-controlled long file transfers in a WLAN in infrastructure mode is available in the literature with one of the main assumptions being equal window size for all TCP connections. We extend the analysis to TCP-controlled long file uploads and downloads with different TCP windows. Our approach is based on the semi- Markov process considered in above work, but with arbitrary window sizes. We present simulation results to show the accuracy of the analytical model. Then, we obtain an association policy for STAs in an IEEE 802.11 WLAN by taking into account explicitly an aspect of practical importance: TCP controlled short file downloads interspersed with read times (motivated by web browsing). Our approach is based on two steps. First, we consider the analytical model mentioned above to obtain the aggregate download throughput. Second, we present a 2-node closed queueing network model to approximate the expected average-sized file download time for a user who shares the AP with other users associated at a multiplicity of rates. These analytical results motivate the proposed association policy, called the Estimated Delay based Association (EDA) policy: Associate with the AP at which the expected file download time is the least. Simulations indicate that for a web-browsing type traffic scenario, EDA outperforms other policies that have been proposed earlier; the extent of improvement ranges from 12.8% to 46.4% for a 9-AP network. We extend the performance model by considering _le sizes drawn from heavy-tailed distributions. We represent heavy-tailed distributions using a 1 mixture of exponential distributions (following Cox's method). We provide a closed queueing network model to approximate the expected average-sized file download time for a user who shares the AP with other users associated at a multiplicity of rates. Further, we analyze TCP-controlled bulk file transfers in a single station WLAN with nonzero propagation delay between the file server and the WLAN. Our approach is to model the flow of packets as a closed queueing network (BCMP network) with 3 service centres, one each for the Access Point and the STA, and the third for the propagation delay. The service rates of the first two are obtained by analyzing the WLAN MAC. We extend this work to obtain throughputs in multirate scenarios. Simulations show that our approach is able to predict observed throughputs with a high degree of accuracy.

Client-Server Communications Efficiency in GIS/NIS Applications : An evaluation of communications protocols and serialization formats / Kommunikationseffektivitet mellan klient och server i GIS/NIS-applikationer : En utvärdering av kommunikationsprotokoll och serialiseringsformat

Klingestedt, Kashmir January 2018 (has links)
Geographic Information Systems and Network Information Systems are important tools for our society, used for handling geographic spatial data and large information networks. It is therefore important to make sure such tools are of high quality. GIS/NIS applications typically deal with a lot of data, possibly resulting in heavy loads of network traffic. This work aims to evaluate two different communications protocols and serialization formats for client-server communications efficiency in GIS/NIS applications. Specifically, these are HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, Java Object Serialization and Google's Protocol Buffers. They were each implemented directly into a commercial GIS/NIS environment and evaluated by measuring two signature server calls in the system. Metrics that were examined are call duration, HTTP overhead size and HTTP payload size. The results suggest that HTTP/2 and Google's Protocol Buffers outperform HTTP/1.1 and Java Object Serialization respectively. An 87% decrease in HTTP overhead size was achieved when switching from HTTP/1.1 to HTTP/2. The HTTP payload size is also shown to decrease with the use of Protocol Buffers rather than Java Object Serialization, especially for communications where data consist of many different object types. Concerning call duration, the results suggest that the choice of communications protocol is more significant than the choice of serialization format for communications containing little data, while the opposite is true for communications containing much data.

Nakamura Pinto, Miguel Kiyoshy 31 October 2022 (has links)
Even the simplest messaging services would be of great help, for example, to farmers who want to know the price of goods they are interested in selling or buying before deciding whether to embark on a possibly long, expensive and exhausting journey. LoRa technology enables long-distance links with reduced power consumption at low cost, its main limitation being the low bandwidth it offers. With LoRa, remote locations, such as rural areas, can benefit from connectivity-based services that would otherwise be impossible. Our proposal falls into the category of community networks, where users build their own network when commercial infrastructure is not available. In addition to a simple messaging application, LoRa can be used to distribute sensor information to communities or to provide disaster alerts or weather data. We present a flexible protocol based on LoRa technology that enables the transfer of "content" called LoRaCTP, which provides the necessary mechanisms for LoRa to be reliable, introducing a lightweight connection setup. We have designed this protocol also as a communication support for IoT solutions based on edge computing, given its stability, low power consumption and the possibility of covering long distances. Likewise, we integrated an architecture that allows data collection from generic external sources. Especially audio sources, targeting two basic services: a voice messaging system that allows users who cannot read or write to make voice notes, and an audio compression service to extract the main features of the audio input and use it to develop intelligent audio analytics based on Machine Learning. We combine IoT and Edge computing in a frugal innovation approach, to propose an "ingenious" solution, in terms of minimum resource utilization and sustainability, to build a basic support for an IoT system in rural areas. We include an MQTT proxy to integrate low-cost and low-power devices into a LoRa-based messaging system. Through a REST interface, we show how our platform can be used to distribute sensor information from rural communities. In addition, MQTT allows this data to be provided to external "data lakes" so that it can be used for tasks such as reporting, visualization, advanced analytics, and machine learning. We describe a generic edge/fog architecture, using microservices, an MQTT-based system that can collect ingress data, manage its persistence, and coordinate data integration with the cloud using a specific service called an aggregator. The edge stations have a dedicated channel with the aggregator that is based on LoRa to enable long-range transmissions with low power consumption. / Nakamura Pinto, MK.
