Sensory-Motor Integration for Control of Digit Position in Grasping and Manipulation

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Dexterous manipulation is a representative task that involves sensorimotor integration underlying a fine control of movements. Over the past 30 years, research has provided significant insight, including the control mechanisms of force coordination during manipulation tasks. Successful dexterous manipulation is thought to rely on the ability to integrate the sense of digit position with motor commands responsible for generating digit forces and placement. However, the mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of digit position-force coordination are not well understood. This dissertation addresses this question through three experiments that are based on psychophysics and object lifting tasks. It was found in psychophysics tasks that sensed relative digit position was accurately reproduced when sensorimotor transformations occurred with larger vertical fingertip separations, within the same hand, and at the same hand posture. The results from a follow-up experiment conducted in the same digit position-matching task while generating forces in different directions reveal a biased relative digit position toward the direction of force production. Specifically, subjects reproduced the thumb CoP higher than the index finger CoP when vertical digit forces were directed upward and downward, respectively, and vice versa. It was also found in lifting tasks that the ability to discriminate the relative digit position prior to lifting an object and modulate digit forces to minimize object roll as a function of digit position are robust regardless of whether motor commands for positioning the digits on the object are involved. These results indicate that the erroneous sensorimotor transformations of relative digit position reported here must be compensated during dexterous manipulation by other mechanisms, e.g., visual feedback of fingertip position. Furthermore, predicted sensory consequences derived from the efference copy of voluntary motor commands to generate vertical digit forces may override haptic sensory feedback for the estimation of relative digit position. Lastly, the sensorimotor transformations from haptic feedback to digit force modulation to position appear to be facilitated by motor commands for active digit placement in manipulation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Kinesiology 2014

Selective modernization of the coast: conflicts, changes and permanebcies in cumbuco county / ModernizaÃÃo seletiva do litoral: conflitos, mudanÃas e permanÃncias da localidade do Cumbuco (CE).

Eider de Olivindo Cavalcante 31 July 2012 (has links)

Cecilio Alvares da Cunha 10 April 1987 (has links)
The kinetics of phase transformation UAl3 + Al → UAl4 of two Al-U alloys, with 31.4 and 33.4 wt % U respectively, was studied by quantitative microscopy. The results have shown that this transformation is a nucleation and thermally activated growth process. The nucleation occurs heterogeneously at the UAl3/AI(∞) interfaces and growth is controlled by volume diffusion. The empirical activation energy of the process was determined, whose mean value is of about 54.8 kcal/mol. It was verified that a parabolic growth law is obeyed. The UAl4/ UAl3 and UAl4/Al(∞) interfaces migrates in opposite directions, with the UAl4/ UAl3 interface velocity was approximately 5 times greater than that of UAl4/Al(∞) interface. The chemical diffusion coefficient of Al and U in the UAl4 phase were evaluated to be of the order of 10-9 cm 2/s at 600°C.

Os resultados obtidos mostram que as transformações tridimensionais são de grande valia ao estudo da anisotropia dos materiais e, em particular, para o material madeira e suas composições estruturais / Abstract: Due to the increasing use of wood in Brazil, technological studies are being improved in recent years seen the need for research aimed at reforestation and timber construction techniques through a variety of compositions with other building materials. Research in this line helps reduce the pressure to exploit new areas providing new uses for wood as a structural material for reforestation by the construction industry. Studies of mechanical and physical properties of wood composites and their importance to the improvement and development of these new technologies. In this study, the study of glued laminated wood beams reinforced with sisal fibers, made of wood from reforestation is carried out with emphasis in the context of the modulus of elasticity. Composite laminates are presented and some types of reinforcements commonly used in structural engineering, returning to research, especially for natural fibers. In addition, we describe some concepts of elasticity, constitutive laws and the coordinate transformations from the perspective of important authors. It developed a formulation whose analysis is done using a transformation model three-dimensional, non-conventional literature, it is possible then the application of the theory developed in the model proposed in glued laminated beams work. The results show that the three-dimensional transformations are of great value to study the anisotropy of materials and, in particular, for the wood material and its structural composition / Mestrado / Estruturas / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Factors Inhibiting Dissociation Of Neisseria gonorrhoeae Cells

Gonzalez, Anthony H. 08 1900 (has links)
The initial studies reported in this dissertation were attempts to induce mutations in those genes which control dissociation in cells of Nei sseria gonorrhoeae. These studies led to an investigation of survival curves of cells grown in liquid media. Instead of survival curves reflecting the diploid nature of gonococci, multiple cell kinetics were observed. It was found that large clumps contained a predominance of cells of the T2 type and that when these clumps were dispersed by DNAase, it appeared that dissociation of T2 was inhibited. The notion of a mechanism of T2 to T4 dissociation being due to genetic transformation was disspelled by these data.

The use of correlation coefficients for load identifiers and a fundamental approach towards power definitions in non-sinusoidal conditions

Bell, Robert Michael 28 February 2011 (has links)
M.Ing. / Along with the increased use of power-electronic devices, there has been an increase in the magnitudes of distorted currents. Much of the power-theory in use today was devised many decades ago, mostly for AC-systems with clean sinusoidal voltages and currents. Modem loads are more often no longer mostly linear. Against the background of a study in the basic mathematics underlying AC power theory, a few techniques concerned with per-frequency power were examined. In addition certain concerns surrounding the use of correlation indexes for the purposes of load identification were also examined.
