Interaction - a built environment staging centreVan den Berg, Anneke 22 November 2011 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the relationship between architectural education and practice. The nature of the relationship between these two phases in architecture is continuously debated and discussed. The debate generally revolves around the responsibilities of educational institutions to produce architects that can easily adapt in the work environment and the industry’s responsibility to assist graduates in the transition process. The debate is discussed and analysed in depth and a programme is developed to assist in facilitating this capricious relationship. A more collaborative relationship between architectural theory and practice can benefit both the quality of architectural education and the architectural industry. The architectural building type that will be investigated is an inhabited bridge. The structure will act as a unifying space between architectural education and practice, Main Campus and South Campus, as well as the different departments in the Built Environment at the University of Pretoria. The facility will act as a platform for the students to interact with members of the different departments in the Built Environment, the built environment industry and the public. The architectural exploration aims to create an environment where the relationship between theory and practice can successfully sustain itself. This is achieved through the development of three types of relationships: social, intellectual and practical. These relationships are developed in order to inform and support one another in the attempt to create a more stable and interdependent relationship between architectural theory and practice. An additional relationship that is addressed is the University’s interface and relationship with its local community and society at large. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / unrestricted

The Art of Transition: A Design Study for Effective Transition Interventions in Autistic KidsSaba Nikrahi (6866693) 15 August 2019 (has links)
This study is concentrating on the transition process in autistic disorder kids. Transition is characterized as shifting between activities and also in an ongoing task. This transformation appears to be very hard to accomplish for many autistic individuals. The tendency towards sameness and resistance towards any alters in the routines leads to tantrum behaviors, such as kicking, shouting, punching, ... The tantrum behaviors that are the outcome of a transition to a non-preferred activity affects the child’s learning process and brings a lot of pressure and anxiety for both parents and the ASD individual.<div><br></div><div>The current thesis has focused on obtaining practical ways to facilitate this process and incorporating them into a system design. To fulfill this goal, a precise understanding of the users need was necessary, in addition to choosing the best suitable intervention models and employing them into a design. In the end, a corresponding app, along with a supporting smartwatch, was accomplished through various rounds of usability testing and user studies.</div>

Clinical considerations in speech therapy for the male-to-female transgender populationsRamon, Regina 22 November 2013 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to determine the treatment strategies that male-to-female transgender individuals consider to be critical to passing as their true gender as well as the unique factors that may contribute to these individuals seeking speech therapy services. This study also seeks to determine awareness of the transgender population in regards to the availability and scope of speech therapy services relative to transitioning or passing as their true gender.
Method: A 38-question electronic survey (N= 17 respondents in final data corpus) was developed to address our research questions and was distributed via email to various transgender listervs, organizations, etc.
Results: Although male to female individuals, regardless of their age or geographic location, reported speech therapy to be an important part of the transition, they did not seek speech therapy for themselves. They are highly motivated to achieve an overall feminine presentation, specifically a more feminine vocal quality. These individuals are
aware of speech therapy services but are not familiar with specific factors targeted in therapy or the breadth of services available.
Conclusion: Preliminary results revealed the rated importance of speech therapy services for the male to female transgender population as well as the lack of awareness and availability of the breadth of speech therapy services available to transgender clients. These findings will further enhance our ability to meet the needs of the male to female transgender client. / text

Västvärldens roll i demokratiseringsprocessen - En komparativ studie av västerländskt linkage och leverage i Mongoliet och GhanaEkstrand, Elias January 2019 (has links)
This thesis analyze the democratization process of Mongolia and Ghana by applying a comparative case study. The study use Steven Levitsky and Lucan Ways theory of Western linkage and leverage to analyze the Mongolian and Ghanaian transition process, from being an non-democratic state to an consolidated democracy, through looking at the development of Western linkage and leverage and if there is any correlation between this development and the progress of democracy in respective state. The findings are that Western linkage in Mongolia never has been high but that the levels of Western linkage has developed positive in 1991 and 1995. The levels of Western leverage has been high in Mongolia since 1991. In Ghana the levels of Western linkage has been high and developed positive since at least 1996, but the levels of Western leverage has been low since 1996. Thus, the correlation between high levels of Western linkage and leverage and the democratization progress in respective state is weak, but there is some correlation between a positive development of Western linkage and the progress of democracy.

European Union and democratization of Africa: the case of Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Morocco (1990-2010)Chirisa, Never 27 August 2015 (has links)
A research report submitted to the School of Social Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for a Degree of Master of Arts in International Relations by coursework and research report. / In the early 1990s, issues of democracy, good governance, security and human rights became more prominent in the international system and attained space in various policy documents. The period has been characterized by massive waves of transitions from one-party to multi-party political systems, which can be described as global democratic revolutions. Such democratic revolutions or movement towards democracy was not confined to one territory; rather it was a worldwide phenomenon that reached many parts of the world such as Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. It involved radical political transitions due to pressure to promote political liberalization and foster democratic reforms in most of these countries. The push for democratization was led by various democratic actors such as the European Union, United States of America, Britain, Norway, Canada and institutions like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank among others. The waves and calls for democratization by these actors have resulted in various democratic transition outcomes in which some of the recipient countries of external democratic support are left stuck in the process while some of them have completely failed and reverted back to authoritarian or oppressive regimes. Countries that have failed in the democratization process experience various consequences such as limited access to the media, fragmented opposition political parties, fraudulent electoral activities, violence and poor citizen participation. These shortfalls reflect gaps or inconsistencies in the outcomes of the democratization process that needs to be investigated. This study looks at the factors causing inconsistencies in the outcomes of the process.

Urban Development Projects: The Role of Leadership for Social Sustainability in a Multicultural District - A Case Study of Drottninghög, HelsingborgKirn, Lukas, Schmidt, Judith, Rothfeld, Neele January 2018 (has links)
Due to globalization and influx, Sweden is facing the challenge of fostering socially inclusive and non-segregated cities. To tackle this challenge, the implementation of social sustainability in urban development projects is crucial. Therefore, this study examines how leadership is perceived to facilitate this process. For this purpose, the authors propose a leadership approach consisting of three aspects (i.e., Communication of Vision, Stakeholder Engagement, Adaptation to the Transition Process) and a framework that makes social sustainability tangible in an urban context. The context of this descriptive case-study was Drottninghög, a multicultural district in Helsingborg, which was the focus of an ongoing urban development project during the conduction of this thesis. The study made use of a qualitative approach, consisting of semi-structured interviews with leaders and community members in Drottninghög and unobtrusive field observations. The data were analyzed using a directed content analysis. Among the main findings were the importance of the use of diverse communication strategies and channels and continuous information loops, to adequately reach all stakeholders while communicating the vision; the significance of empowering stakeholders to actively engage in the community by offering appropriate and diverse activities and creating a personal atmosphere as well as including stakeholders as early as possible in the processes; and the value of leaders being flexible and adaptive to individual needs through inside knowledge and personal involvement when supporting stakeholders to adapt to the transition process.
