Interface : activating a transitional space between private retail interiors and exterior public streets in Robert Sobukwe Street Sunnyside

Wallendorf, Anneke January 2014 (has links)
Many of the buildings along Robert Sobukwe Street have been renovated in an effort to regenerate the area, including the Sunny Park Mall. These renovations have improved the general perception of the street but not the overall accessibility to the interior spaces behind the facades. The building facades are a barrier between exterior and interior spaces with little integration. A decline in the pedestrian activity of the retail street stores has occurred due to these renovations in other areas. Consideration towards pedestrian users has shifted from the public street to the design for private interiors. Through the understanding of user behaviour, an intervention strategy can be formed to align social needs with the spatial needs of both the public and private users to inform a design which satisfies both. This intervention utilises the principles of way finding, activities and thresholds to build an interface linking the two environments based on the private needs for occupation and public need for interaction. It provides a strategy to incorporate exterior spaces into a design and not limit the field to the space between the walls of existing buildings. To extend the space and create a transition dedicated to engaging the needs of both users is beneficial to the development and sustainability of this context. / Dissertation (MInt(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Architecture / MInt(Prof) / Unrestricted

L'enfance dans l'art : espace transitionnel, transfiguration et transfert dans le dessin, la photographie et la vidéo / Chilhood in art : transitional space, transfiguration and transfer in the graphic, photographic and videographic medium

Pillaudin, Marine 12 May 2015 (has links)
Relying on personal experience in drawing, collage and photography, this thesis on poiesis explores the subject of childhood in Art. Designed as a work in progress, it stems from the intimacy of drawing and aims at constructing a singular outlook from the display of photography and films depicting childhood trauma. It verifies the hypothesis stating that the artist peers into his own childhood and that of others in order to conquer creative fields hitherto ignored, at the threshold of the intimate other. The first section scrutinizes the works of Louis Bourgeois, Mike Kelley and Rosemarie Trockel striving to understand how their creative processes reactivate transitional space -and its associated phenomena- by immersing us in distant recollections of childhood. The second section questions the transfiguration and the dramatic alteration of children's faces filmed and photographed by Diane Arbus, Lewis Hine, Sebastiâo Salgado and Gillian Wearing. The thesis then pursues on to evaluate the aesthetic and political stakes bound to the use of these images by artists, the likes of Mathieu Pemot and Catherine Poncin. Ultimately, the third part is centred on the work of Gerhard Richter dealing with transfer as a means of resurfacing -through reiteration- past events that haunt him. The resulting product thus making it possible to set these wounds in stone. Mythesis is that the experience of total absorption/immersion in these works -simultaneously including and excluding us- makes it possible for the artist and the observer to acknowled e the narratives of ethers within themselves.

Processus de deuil du "proche-tiers" : la relation de soins : un espace transitionnel ouvert / Bereavement : care and Relationships : an open transitional space

Auray, Isabelle 23 June 2016 (has links)
Questions revolving around end of life and the grieving process that follows for loved ones are as relevant as they are puzzling. Is it unrealistic to think that mourning can be facilitated? This research aims to examine and build upon the work and theories of D. W. Winnicott. This research delves into how care may be transitional in the relationship and in the intersubjective space created by a triad of care: medical caregiver(s), patient and loved ones. From a sample of 30 patients, semi-structured interviews with 21 medical caregivers and 8 relatives were analyzed. This analysis shows how the care is transitional in the accompaniment. This research reveals the benefits of creating a transitional space during end of life care. First and foremost, it assists the patient in the here and the now of end of life; it, then, aids the caregivers. Medical caregivers and loved ones alike benefited from accompanying the patients in death both during the palliative care stages as well as afterwards as they worked through the grieving process.

Environments that combine characteristics of opposites means; potentially allowing an interpenetration between architecture and urban space. In our research, we should address of the possibilities and implications in the architecture design, thereof touches to their transitional elements. The study seeks to expand a conceptual field and proposes an interlocution with a series of authors which have looked into the thematic of transitional space and (or) near concepts, complementary, from which we intend to situate ourselves with the discussion concerning of binomials architecture-city, individual-collective, singular-plural, among others. To counteract the concepts investigated a reading of concrete architectural objects, we selected five referential buildings - of public character - in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and analyze how the interventions made from the architectural object could result in environments of assemblage, which to have integrated into the urban tissue, and have amplified the possibilities of public space for collective use. Thus, we presented in dissertation, initially, a diversity of approaches to the research object, in order to establish some fundamental considerations for the architecture design of the space of transition. Following, we discuss briefly the question of the project, from the perspective of his own ambivalence of propositive instrument. Completing the study, we explore the unfoldings of the thematic from object, listing five qualitative themes through which we oriented the discussions, in which projective and theoretical referentials were inserted.

Biblioteca e Educação: um estudo sobre acolhimento em dispositivos culturais para crianças / Library and Education: a study on embracement in cultural devices for children.

Jesus, Thaisa Alves Dias de 19 October 2018 (has links)
This research relates children embracement in libraries, questioning the environment complexities of the organized information, the children\'s singularity and the inadequacy of practices that aims the reception and insertion of children in libraries. The study seeks to systematize elements capable of guiding embracement processes to non-literate children in culture and information devices. Based on the assumption that the construction of links/bonds with the library, seen as a transitional space, its an essential category to subject\'s dialogue with the cultural registered patrimony, the initial process of ingression its a major point. The theoretical research covers the notions of embracement in different knowledge areas: children; transitional object, library, devices, cultural mediation and the Infoeducational approach. The qualitative method was the base of the study, from participant observation and testimonies gathering of the subjects related to the research. The empirical object was the Programa Biblioacolhe, implemented on a library of a Unified Educational Center (Centro Educacional Unificado - CEU) and developed in 2017, aiming the reception of children of Child Education. The research concludes the nature of embracement as an essential category to the construct of the subject\'s belonging sense related to the library, indicating that it is a broad notion that implies different dimentions, of affective, cognitive and institutional orders. The results points that the process of insertion, both significative and participative, of the subjects in the informational and cultural device is complex, gradual and implies different circles mutually implicated, specially: the constitution of a board of committed subjects and contexts prepared to the achievement of the embracement process.

The essential care-giving or the time of a relationship, in personal hygiene regarding Alzheimer's disease disorders

Moras, Delphine 06 October 2017 (has links)
From two surveys in institutions for the elderly, an ethnography of the doctor-patient relationship attempts to decipher the relational dynamic during the act of personal hygiene for the patient. Not at all obvious, the sometimes violent refusal from people with Alzheimer's disease, is interpreted as offensive to the proposed care. Yet this daily gesture of care-giving and comfort by the creation of familiarity and trust becomes a moment of communication that can strengthen a weakening bond. This research presents an analysis of the types of relationships in the personal context of the disease and of accompaniment. Setting aside the safety imperatives of a medico-social organization, the moment of personal hygiene is a priviledged transistional act. This particular approach to care-giving in personal hygiene can, over time, identify the relational processes from an emotional perspective. The intimate inter-subjectivity lasting until the end of life creating a dialogue of mutual respect and acknowledgement. An appropriate methodology traces this journey to the beginnings of intimacy, a topic and an approach in a context of a gerontological structure.

Architecture for Housing: Multi-Function Transitional Space of Housing in China

zhang, zhaoqing 23 November 2015 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation defines and develops transitional space of housing, which is adaptable to the Chinese environment. It is the integration of community, culture element and sustainable development. Although the lifestyle is changing today, the concept of courtyard which comes from the Chinese vernacular building remains in peoples’ minds. It’s not only a form but also an expression of national culture and a sense of space. There are some attempts for Chinese architects to renovate or reconstruct the “courtyard”, but most of them are low-rise buildings. Facing with the high density, high volume urban living environment, Chinese architects only set vii the first floor yard and roof garden in multi-story or high-rise buildings. To improve the community environment, various levels courtyard space, such as the courtyard among units, community courtyard, are set. These courtyards are regarded as public space which not only plays the role of landscaping but also make people feel comfortable. However, there are still some problems, such as sustainable development, privacy. While there are some good attempts for foreign architects to design courtyard in terms of sustainable technology, the housing they design lack the Chinese culture character. So the design of multi-function transitional space raises the interesting questions for future research and development.

The experience of specialized teachers with students with autism : a clinical approach

Hélie, Thierry 27 November 2015 (has links)
The author is both a teacher with a vast experience in teaching autistic pupils, and a student of Paris Descartes University in Science of Education, with on a clinical and psychoanalytical approach. The thesis questions the experience of special educational needs (SEN) teachers, specialised in the teaching of pupils with autism. The challenge is to create a psychologically healthy and supportive place as well as bonds conducive to the transfer and acquisition of knowledge. Changes must be done in the professional attitude teachers must adopt. Indeed, their pupils, cared for by numerous healthcare professionals, teachers, as well as their own families are bound to shake the teachers confidence in themselves and in what they have learnt in their professional training. The research trajectory is first analysed, then the questions raised above are presented as problematics. Four clinical interviews carried out by teachers, all working with autistic pupils are analysed. Science of Education concepts such as the self-professional, and psychoanalysis, as well as the works of Donald Woods Winnicott, Wilfred Ruprecht Bion or Jacques Lacan, are used to explore the possible meanings of the reported experience. Some results emerge: teachers conjure up varied psychological resources, present or past, personal or professional, to make contact with their pupils and maintain this unique teaching bond. Their teaching appears to rely on the bases of a relationship created by a transitional and potential space (Winnicott), so that bonds and learning can be set up.

IN-BETWEEN: PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT STUDY THROUGH INDUSTRIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES / IN-BETWEEN: PRODUKTUTVECKLINGSSTUDIE GENOM INDUSTRIELLA OCH EXPERIMENTELLA METODER

Marie-Rose, Aymerick January 2021 (has links)
Experimental design is a practice operating at the limit between craftmanship, art and technology. In collaboration with the studio breadeEscalope (Vienna, Austria) this project oscillates between research and production to study the link between industrial and experimental approach to design.  Hitherto initiated from an impulse or a problem requiring solution, the action of designing suggest a product or a service to fulfill needs. In industrial design, the creative process follows contextually anchored steps to frame, define, develop and deliver. For the sake of a pragmatic answer, the delivery is centred around the user and its needs, often leading to an opaque finished product.  Home’s basic, the coat rack was selected to support this study as a concrete product base for trend and consumer behavior analysis. From shared ornamental and functional object placed in the entrance of houses, the coat rack previously “hatstand”, is today an unnoticed domestic object. The final product was hand manufactured with recycled and raw component, allowing transparency on the production process and used material. Stacking up coats on the produced rack create a private space for the user to sit in, questioning the relationship between user and product (ownership, trust, value). Based on architectural concept and design theory, the product aims to bridge creative and technical disciplines to suggest a functional yet questionable product as dialogue starter.  How sustainable are the objects that surround us every day? What is the story of the product? With those question in head the experimental design thinking studio breadedEscalope based in Vienna (Austria), offers an alternative approach to design. Always starting projects with the production process as a story of formations, offering unique and playful outcome to the act of designing.
