1842年,香港岛被割让给英国。翌年发布的《香港宪章》(the Hong Kong Charter)和《致璞鼎查训令》(Instructions to Sir Henry Pottinger)标志着香港正式成为英属殖民地,英国对香港的殖民统治自此正式开始。毫无疑问,在英国官员为主的殖民政府和华人为主的被管治群体之间存在着巨大的语言鸿沟,这是殖民管治所面对和必须有效解決的问题。港英殖民政府内除有一批颇受重视、监管翻译工作的欧洲译者外,尚有不少华人译员。他们主要负责重要性较低的日常翻译工作,弥补欧洲译者人数不足的问题。然而长久以来,学界几乎完全沒有关注早期港英殖民政府內的华人译员群体,致使他们的工作和贡献一直沒有得到认识和认同。这可以说是香港殖民史以及香港翻译史上一个较严重的空白。 / 本文爬梳大量原始史料,分析这一群体从接受英语教育,到政府任职及进一步发展的人生轨迹以及此间的活动,揭示他们作为翻译史现象的复杂性:一方面,他们身处殖民社会,既是统治政府的执行人员,但又同时是被殖民者;另一方面,作为译者,他们处于中英两种语言及文化的交接点,面临不同语言和文化的冲突和抉择。正是这种复杂的境地,使得他们身份的不确定性和双重性充分突显出來。本文通过对于华人译员这种复杂性的分析,除让我们更好地理解这一特殊群体的面貌外,也希望能进一步展示译者研究的丰富性和可能性,期望能为长期被忽略的译者研究作贡献。 / The Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842. One year later, the Hong Kong Charter and the later Instructions to Sir Henry Pottinger were promulgated to establish the Hong Kong Island and its dependencies as a separate Crown Colony, beginning the British colonial rule over this former Chinese territory. Without doubt, there existed a huge language barrier between the British officials and the residents, who were overwhelmingly made up of the Chinese nationals. Communication had been a pressing and difficult problem faced by the Colonial Hong Kong Government. / In the Colonial Hong Kong Government, there were some European interpreters who were in senior positions to take charge of interpretation/translation supervision. They enjoyed superior status. On the other hand, some native Chinese also acted as interpreters/translators. They were subordinate to and assisted the European interpreters/translators in the government, undertaking relatively less important and sensitive interpretation/translation tasks. Little attention has been paid to the study of the native Chinese interpreters/translators in the early Colonial Hong Kong Government, resulting in a lack of understanding of their work and contributions in the translation history of colonial Hong Kong. / This dissertation studies the native Chinese interpreters as a special group in the early Colonial Hong Kong Government. By digging into first-hand historical materials, it analyzes the education background, the career paths, the achievements as well as the predicaments of this very special group of civil servants. It reveals the complexity of these interpreters as a phenomenon in the history of translation, that on the one hand, they were part of the ruling machinery of the colonial government, and on the other, they were native Chinese like the rest of the Hong Kong residents. As interpreters/translators, they were caught between two languages, two cultures, and two peoples. It is the purpose of the present dissertation to study and reveal this complexity, in the hope to provide a deeper understanding of this peculiar group of people at a peculiar stage of Hong Kong translation history. Interpreting services provided during consultations in the medical sector : identifying shortcomings

South Africa, 2015. / The study focuses on the interpreting services provided during consultations in the medical setting. It looks broadly at the communication deficiencies created by the difference in the languages spoken by both medical practitioners and patients during consultations. Several times, the researcher’s personal experience has shown that isiZulu speaking patients are frequently consulted by English speaking doctors whenever they visit medical institutions. Consequently, as a result of this situation, these isiZulu speaking patients with limited English proficiency find it difficult to fully express all their medical conditions to the English speaking doctors and vice versa due to the existing language barriers. These language barriers are most likely to give rise to inferior medical assistance to isiZulu speaking patients. Furthermore, the nurses find themselves being ad hoc interpreters in this regard based on the assumption that they are bilingual. However, their linguistic and interpreting ability are not considered. The study therefore investigates the possible shortcomings and also looks at the implications most likely to occur as a result of reluctance to provide professional medical interpreting services. The data is collected from medical practitioners (doctors and nurses) and patients. From the results obtained, the researcher suggests possible recommendations in order to address the identified shortcomings. Lolu cwaningo lumayelana nokutolika ezikhungweni zezempilo. Ngenxa yalesi simo, abahlengikazi bagcina bezithola sebengotolika ngenxa yokuthi kucatshangelwa ukuthi bayakwazi ukukhuluma izilimi zombili. Akube kusabhekwa ukuthi bazazi kangakanani izilimi lezo kanye nokuthi bayakwazi yini ukutolika. Ucwaningo lubheka izingqinamba ezikhona kanye nezingenzeka ngenxa yokungahlinzekwa ngokutolika okusezingeni elifanele ezikhungweni zezempilo futhi kungahlinzekwa abantu abaqeqeshiwe. Development of an interpreting service model at the Durban University of Technology

Thesis in compliance with the requirements for the Doctor's Degree in Technology: Language Practice, Durban University of Technology, 2011. / This research deals with the development of a model of interpreting services for a newly merged multilingual University of Technology, the Durban University of Technology. The rationale for the study was the urgent need to give students whose mother tongue is not the medium of instruction (i.e. English) equity of access to higher-degree education. The research was carried out within a critical realist approach, which seeks to transform society by practical application of theory. Unlike previous studies in interpreting, this research focuses on the service provision aspect of interpreting. It falls within the field of educational interpreting, but goes beyond the classroom situation in considering other university interpreting needs, such as seminars and in-house conferences, graduation and other ceremonies, operational meetings and labour-related meetings. Franck‟s modelling process was used to formulate a theoretical model of the interpreting service delivery mechanism using data gathered during visitations to local and international universities. The theoretical model, or system of essential functions, was used to arrive at the applied aspect of the mechanism, termed an empirical model of interpreting service delivery. The model was then validated in terms of its application in various contexts at the Durban University of Technology. It is suggested that the theoretical and practical models developed have application not only for educational interpreting, but also in other interpreting contexts. The models are also considered to have relevance for service delivery in general, which is a critical issue at present in South Africa.

Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / This research analysed the use of interpretation services to address the communication challenges faced by Congolese asylum seekers at the refugee reception office in Cape Town. It examined the language challenges of Congolese asylum seekers, the role of the interpreters in addressing these challenges and the perceptions of refugees and home affairs officials about the quality of services provided by interpreters. It also discussed the implications for the outcome of Congolese applications for asylum. This project was framed around Bell and Reiss’s theories of translation and the general communication model. Community interpreting and interpreting studies complimented these theories because all of them focus on the intricacies of interpreting messages and the implications for meaning making, especially in the case of oral accounts. The research design was a case study and its unit of analysis was a company called Zeenab, Remy, Gerald, and Buba (ZRGB) Interpretation, Translation and Social Services, which has for years been the main provider of interpretation services to the department of home affairs in Cape Town. Since this project was a case study, it adopted a qualitative approach and used qualitative methods such as interviews, observations, focus group discussions and document analysis to collect data from respondents. These methods were suitable for this project because they provided unrestricted space for Congolese refugees and home affairs officials to express their views about the interpretation services and the implications thereof. All interviews took place in Cape Town between June and July 2016. The duration of interviews ranged from 25-65 minutes and the total number of respondents was 18. The researcher used a thematic analysis approach to organise, analyse and interpret the data collected from participants. This process involved coding, defining and naming and penetrating themes, searching for multiple meanings embedded in the data. After interpreting the data, this research revealed firstly that the main challenge of Congolese asylum seekers was to communicate their experiences consistently and accurately in English language. Secondly, asylum seekers blamed the rejection of their applications for asylum on the poor quality of interpretation services provided by ZRGB. Thirdly, asylum seekers had different impressions of the role of interpreters in the refugee determination process. In terms of scholarly contributions, this study hopes to shed light on the communication challenges that francophone asylum seekers and refugees face during the application and interviewing process. In addition, it can contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the politics of asylum and the acquisition of refugee identity in post-apartheid South Africa.

Intercultural communication in healthcare interpreting : an exploration of possibilities

This thesis will present an exploration of how healthcare interpreters utilize intercultural communication skills as they interact with cultural differences in their work. I will review the literature on healthcare interpreting, including provision laws, standards, codes of ethics, paradigms, and roles. I will focus on intercultural communication literature in order to demonstrate possible ways that it can be applied to the healthcare interpreting field. In order to better understand how intercultural communication is being used in healthcare interpreting, I will conduct interviews with healthcare interpreters who have had intercultural training. In conclusion, elements of a training framework will be introduced that could be developed in order to train advanced interpreters who are interested in using an intercultural approach in their work.
