Fractals and Billiard Orbits on Sierpinski Carpets

Landstedt, Erik January 2017 (has links)
This Bachelor's thesis deals with fractals and orbits on Sierpinski carpets. We present the fundamental theory regarding fractals and some illustrative examples together with fractal billiards. In the latter part of the thesis we use elementary methods to present an original proof concerning the closure of some billiard orbits on Sierpinski carpets. A survey of the article Periodic Billiard orbits of self-similar Sierpinski Carpets, see [8], has been done, in which we make a discussion about one open question regarding reflections on the carpet. Furthermore, we state and prove some propositions related to this open question.

Familles à un paramètre de surfaces en genre 2 / One parameter families of surfaces in genus 2

Rodriguez, Olivier 08 December 2010 (has links)
In this thesis we study some one parameter families of compact Riemann surfaces of genus 2 defined by translation surfaces. The families we consider are Teichmüller geodesics in the moduli space. We mainly describe these surfaces by means of period matrices and equations of the associated algebraic curves. We study admissible automorphisms for surfaces in some of those families. The main result is an explicit characterisation of period matrices of real curves with three real components belonging to the family obtained by projecting the SL(2,R)-orbit of the «L»-shaped translation surface tiled by three squares into the moduli space. We finally show, using an interpretation in terms of Schwarz-Christoffel transformations, how to numerically compute an equation of the algebraic curve defined by a «L»-shaped translation surface.

Compactification géométrique de l'espace de modules des structures de demi-translation sur une surface / Geometric compactification of the moduli space of half-translation structures on a surface

Morzadec, Thomas 11 December 2015 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to build a geometric compactification of the space of half-translation structures on a connected, compact surface S, with genus at least 2. It is a part of the wide thema of study of the deformations of metric structures on surfaces.A half-translation structure on S is a locally euclidean metric (with null constant curvature) on S, with conical singularities of angles k pi, with k an integer and k>2, such that the holonomy of every smooth curve of S, disjoint from the singularities, is contained in Id or -Id.I define the set of mixed structures on S, which are tree-graded spaces (in the sense of Drutu-Sapir), equivariant by the fundamental group of S and CAT(0), obtained by gluing some pieces by some edges, possibly reduced to a point, such that the space obtained by replacing the pieces by some points is a simplicialtree (most edges have a positive length), and the pieces are either some trees or some universal covers of (open) subsurfaces of S endowed with a half-translation structures. I endow the space Mix(S) of (classes of isometry equivariant by the fundamental group of S of) mixed structures on S with a natural geometric topology, called the Gromov equivariant topology. I show, by techniques using ultralimits "à la Gromov", that the space Flat(S) of (isotopy classes of) half-translation structures on S, identified with the set of half-translation structures on the universal cover of S which are equivariant for the fundamental group of S, is a dense and open subset of Mix(S), and the projectified space PMix(S) is compact. The projectified space PMix(S) is then a compactification of the projectified space PFlat(S) (which identifies with the space of half-translations structures of area 1 on S.

Pardo, Angel 22 June 2017 (has links)
The Gauss circle problem consists in counting the number of integer points of bounded length in the plane. In other words, counting the number of closed geodesics of bounded length on a flat two dimensional torus. Many counting problems in dynamical systems have been inspired by this problem. For 30 years, the experts try to understand the asymptotic behavior of closed geodesics in translation surfaces. H. Masur proved that this number has quadratic growth rate. Compute the quadratic asymptotic (Siegel–Veech constant) is a very active research domain these days. The object of study in this thesis is the wind-tree model, a non-compact billiard model. In the classical setting, we place identical rectangular obstacles in the plane at each integer point. We play billiard on the complement. We show that the number of periodic trajectories has quadratic asymptotic growth rate and we compute the Siegel–Veech constant for the classical wind-tree model as well as for the Delecroix–Zorich variant. We prove that, for the classical wind-tree model, this constant does not depend on the dimensions of the obstacles (non-varying phenomenon, analogous to results of Chen–Möller). Finally, when the underlying compact translation surface is a Veech surface, we give a quantitative version of the counting.

Combinatoire et dynamique du flot de Teichmüller

Delecroix, Vincent 16 November 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, we study the dynamics of the linear flow of translation surfaces and its renormalization by the Teichmüller flow introduced by H. Masur and W. Veech in 1982. A combinatorial version of the renormalization, the Rauzy induction on interval exchange transformations, was introduced by G. Rauzy in 1979. First of all, we consider the combinatorics of Rauzy classes which form a partition of the set of irreducible permutations and are part of the Rauzy induction. In a second time, we consider an infinite Z^2-periodic billiard in the plane called the wind-tree model. It was introduced in a stochastic version by P. and T. Ehrenfest in 1912 and in the periodic version by J. Hardy and J. Weber in 1980. We construct a family of directions for which the flow of the billiard is divergent and hence give examples of divergent Z^2-cocycles over interval exchange transformations. Moreover, we prove that the polynomial rate of diffusion is generically 2/3. In other words, the maximal distance reached by a particule below time t has the order of t^2/3.
