Knowledge and understanding of an HIV/AIDS education workshop in a multinational organisation : an evaluation of the AIDS Champions workshop at Shell Southern AfricaMulenga, Chao Feramo Nkhungulu January 2003 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 105-111. / HIV/AIDS poses a global medical epidemic threatening social and economic development in most developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa currently bears the brunt of the epidemic with close to 30 million people infected with the disease. South Africa has the second fastest growing infection rates in the world as at December 2002. Currently no known cure for the disease exists. Interventions involve education and awareness programs and multiple therapy medical treatment. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the perceptions and knowledge of participants at the Shell AIDS Champions workshop. The research used a triangulatory approach utilizing pre-test and post-test survey questionnaires group discussions, participant observation and semi-structured interviews. 22 participants from Shell Southern Africa and Easigas attended the workshop. Statistical techniques were applied to the questionnaire findings. Content analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data. Findings from the evaluation indicate that participant perceptions show agreement with current Shell policy on HIV/AIDS. The findings show that the major impact of the workshop was observed on the knowledge-based section of the evaluation. The results of the evaluation confirm that participant knowledge was increased through participation in the AIDS Champions workshop.

In this study the aim is to examine how employees in treatment programmes relate to girls that self-harm. To achieve this four questions were formulated: (1) What experiences does the empolyees have of meeting girls that self-harm? (2) Based on the employees’ experiences, what has been the background to why the girls self-harm? (3) Based on the employees’ experience, what increases or decreases the risk of self-harm? (4) How do the employees’ work with girls that self-harm? The method being used was qualitative interviews with vignettes. The theoretical framework is Becker’s Labeling Theory and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecology of Human Development. The result shows that according to the employees issues in the family is a common factor among girls that self-harm. It also shows that the employees’ opinions on how to work with the girls’ physical wounds are divided. A comparative study of South African and Brazilian HIV and AIDS rates and policiesNoronha, Rafael January 2010 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 81-85). / HIV and AIDS are still affecting many people in Brazil, South Africa and across the world, even though much has been done to mitigate against its further spread. Often Brazil and South Africa are compared to each other because of their economic position in the world and also because of their similar political histories. This research compares the Brazilian and the South African HIV and AIDS National Strategic prevention policies and it also aims to find out why the HIV and AIDS prevalence rates took significantly different patterns in the respective countries. The study includes a policy comparison and qualitative in-depth interviews with 14 organisation directors whose main focus is HIV prevention in Brazil and South Africa. The mains findings revealed that one of the main reasons for the different prevalence rate in both countries was because the civil society in Brazil played a major role in pressurizing the government to respond to the pandemic, while in South African the civil society did not play a major role. The Brazilian government thus started responding to HIV at least 9 years before the South African government did. Also, the Brazilian National HIV and AIDS prevention policy has an action plan for each goal, while the South African Policy does not have action plans for their goals. The Brazilian policy is also decentralized to municipal level, while the South African policy is decentralized only to Provincial level. Another finding was that in Brazil the NGO sector was directly involved in formulating the policy while in South Africa the NGO sector was not. In Brazil the respondents had a good knowledge and understanding of the policy, while in South Africa the respondents did not have a good knowledge of the policy. In Brazil NGOs have formed partnerships between themselves in order to deliver better services and to make their voices stronger when pressurising the government. Respondents in Brazil also knew what other organisations were doing. In South Africa organisations did not know what other organisations were doing and the NGOs did not have strong partnerships between themselves.

Halfway houses as a mechanism for the reintegration of offendersNkosi, Majozi Ephraim 11 1900 (has links)
The Department of Correctional Services sees the need for intensive preparation of inmates for reintegration into the community after release. Presently the Department of Correctional Services conducts pre-release preparation programmes in larger institutions. The inmates are, however, detained in institutions where the influence from other inmates is not conducive to the effective preparation of inmates for adjustment in free society after release or placement on parole. The use of halfway houses can combat the latter problems and play an important role in providing educational and training programmes. Specialised services such as social work; religious work, counselling, psychological treatment and psychiatry receive attention. Inmates who are merely released from prison without effective preparation are likely to resort to recidivism / Penology / M.A. (Penology)

Hipnose as terapeutiese hulpmiddel by Wiskunde-angs / Hypnosis as therapeutic aid with regard to Mathematics anxietyTheron, Gesiena Catharina 11 1900 (has links)

be used to lower Mathematics anxiety levels to such an extend that pupils can optimally
achieve in Mathematics. The nature, causes, extent, recognition, explanation,
consequences, incidence and measurement of Mathematics anxiety, its relationship to
achievement in Mathematics, as well as the help that can be rendered by teachers and
