Schizophrenia and hemispheric brain functioning : a neuropsychological case study of a monozygotic twin case.

Rautenbach, Shevonne. January 2006 (has links)
Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental illness which is complex and multifactorial in nature. Currently a full understanding of the exact aetiological and treatment pathways is yet to be understood, with effective treatment of the debilitating and pervasive negative symptoms particularly lacking. However recent advances in neurophysiological and neuropsychological research seem to be converging on theories of the central role of lateralised functional systems. These models implicate right hemispheric hyperactivation in negative symptom patterns, while positive symptoms are thought to be associated with left frontal hypoactivation resulting in compensatory left temporal hyperactivation. Through the use of the Cognitive Neuropsychological case study methodology, this research took an inductive and exploratory approach to a unique case of 41 year old monozygotic twins concordant for schizophrenia and discordant for a right frontal cerebrovascular accident (CVA). From various records the CVA seemingly had a positive effect on the affected-twin's negative symptoms. By means of a selected battery of neuropsychological tests this research focused on patterns of test performance for known functional systems and identified neuropsychological correlates of the CVA and the negative symptom improvement. Statistically significant differences were found between the twins, particularly in the right medial and ventral prefrontal areas. These areas, with their projections to the limbic system and other sub-cortical structures, were highlighted as being important to these differences. From these findings working hypotheses regarding specific lobal structures, relating to existing theories and research in schizophrenia, were posited for future research. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2006.

The discordance in weight between twins pairs is one of the most important complications of the twin’s pregnancy, due to its elevated incidence and high degree of perinatal mortality. Aim - To study the influence of the weight differences between the first and second newborn twin in the perinatal results. Subjects and Methods – The weight of the twins born at the Maternity of Hospital Regional de Sorocaba, SP, was analyzed retrospectively from July 1997 to June 1998. The samples were 89 mothers and their twins, divided into 3 classes of newborn weight differences (WDC), as follow: concordant (<15%), mild discordant (15% to 25%) and severe discordant (>25%). The WDC was obtained at birth, by the following mathematical sentence:... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below)

A Novel Approach to Examining the Role of Anxiety in Social Situations Using the Social Information Processing Model

Trask, Megan McCrary 01 August 2019 (has links)
This study explored the relationship between anxiety and the social information processing (SIP) model. Children’s responses to several stages of the SIP model were assessed after children had undergone anxious mood induction procedures, and similarities and differences between anxious and aggressive children were examined. Furthermore, temperament and heritability were investigated in relation to anxiety and stages of the SIP model. Data were collected from 45 families within the Southern Illinois Twins/Triplets and Siblings Study (SITSS). Results showed that children’s anxiety was related to generating avoidant responses in one stage of the SIP model, whereas children’s aggression was not significantly associated with any SIP stage. Children’s worried and angry mood states predicted avoidant and aggressive responses, respectively. Temperament was not significantly related to anxiety or stages of the SIP model. Lastly, there was evidence of heritability for child-rated anxiety, but not for parent-rated anxiety or stages of the SIP model. Overall, this study provides important information about possible contributors to children’s maladaptive social behavior.

Digital Twin Academy: from Zero to Hero through individual learning experiences

Ulmer, Jessica, Mostafa, Youssef, Wollert, Jörg 27 January 2022 (has links)
Digital twins are seen as one of the key technologies of Industry 4.0. Although many research groups focus on digital twins and create meaningful outputs, the technology has not yet reached a broad application in the industry. The main reasons for this imbalance are the complexity of the topic, the lack of specialists, and the unawareness of the twin opportunities. The project 'Digital Twin Academy' aims to overcome these barriers by focusing on three actions: Building a digital twin community for discussion and exchange, offering multi-stage training for various knowledge levels, and implementing realworld use cases for deeper insights and guidance. In this work, we focus on creating a flexible learning platform that allows the user to select a training path adjusted to personal knowledge and needs. Therefore, a mix of basic and advanced modules is created and expanded by individual feedback options. The usage of personas supports the selection of the appropriate modules.
