ULTRA-WIDEBAND PLANAR ANTENNA DESIGNS AND APPLICATIONS

Su, Saou-Wen 22 May 2006 (has links)
The studies in this dissertation mainly utilize planar antennas for ultra-wideband antenna designs not only on the investigation of antenna performance but also towards exploiting attractive features of ultra-wideband antennas for practical applications, such as WMAN access-point antennas, omnidirectional WiMAX access-point antennas, band-notched UWB (Ultra-wideband, 3.1 ~ 10.6 GHz) antennas, and so on. To begin with, the effects of the ground-plane size and the asymmetrical ground plane on ultra-wideband antennas are studied in Chapter 2. Following up, from the conclusive results, an antenna for WMAN operation in access-point applications and an omnidirectional monopole for USB wireless network card device are proposed and analyzed. Characteristics of ultra-wideband antenna radiation in relation to the antenna's width for obtaining omnidirectional radiation are addressed. In Chapter 3, several ultra-wideband access-point antennas are presented for achieving good omnidirectional radiation in the azimuthal plane across the bandwidth. Furthermore, in Chapter 4, band-notching techniques are applied to ultra-wideband antennas for avoiding the interference between the UWB and the WLAN systems.

Investigating and Enhancing Performance of Multiple Antenna Systems in Compact MIMO/Diversity Terminals

Zhang, Shuai January 2013 (has links)
Today, owners of small communicating device are interested in transmitting or receiving various multimedia data. By increasing the number of antennas at the transmitter and/or the receiver side of the wireless link, the diversity/Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) techniques can increase wireless channel capacity without the need for additional power or spectrum in rich scattering environments. However, due to the limited space of small mobile devices, the correlation coefficients between MIMO antenna elements are very high and the total efficiencies of MIMO elements degrade severely. Furthermore, the human body causes high losses on electromagnetic wave. During the applications, the presence of users may result in the significant reduction of the antenna total efficiencies and highly affects the correlations of MIMO antenna systems. The aims of this thesis are to investigate and enhance the MIMO/diversity performance of multiple antenna systems in the free space and the presence of users. The background and theory of multiple antenna systems are introduced briefly first. Several figures of merits are provided and discussed to evaluate the multiple antenna systems. The decoupling techniques are investigated in the multiple antenna systems operating at the higher frequencies (above 1.7 GHz) and with high radiation efficiency. The single, dual and wide band isolation enhancements are realized through the half-wavelength decoupling slot, quarter-wavelength decoupling slot with T-shaped impedance transformer, tree-like parasitic element with multiple resonances, as well as the different polarizations and radiation patterns of multiple antennas. In the lower bands (lower than 960 MHz), due to the low radiation efficiency and strong chassis mode, the work mainly focused on how to directly reduce the correlations and enlarge the total efficiency. A new mode of mutual scattering mode is introduced. By increasing the Q factors, the radiation patterns of multiple antennas are separated automatically to reduce the correlations. With the inter-element distance larger than a certain distance, a higher Q factor also improved the total efficiency apart from the low correlation. A wideband LTE MIMO antenna with multiple resonances is proposed in mobile terminals. The high Q factors required for the low correlation and high efficiencies in mutual scattering mode is reduced with another mode of diagonal antenna-chassis mode. Hence, the bandwidth of wideband LTE MIMO antenna with multiple resonances mentioned above can be further enlarged while maintaining the good MIMO/diversity performance. The user effects are studied in different MIMO antenna types, chassis lengths, frequencies, port phases and operating modes. Utilizing these usefully information, an adaptive quad-element MAS has been proposed to reduce the user effects and the some geranial rules not limited to the designed MAS have also been given. /
QC 20130121
/ EU Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window TANDEM

Using chaos to enhance multi-user time-of-arrival estimation : application to UWB ranging systems / Utilisation du chaos pour améliorer l’estimation du temps d'arrivée dans le cas multi-utilisateur : application à un système de télémétrie de type UWB

Ma, Hang 23 April 2014 (has links)
In the coming decades, highly accurate position information has the potential to create revolutionary applications in the social, medical, commercial and military areas. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology is considered as a potential candidate for enabling accurate localization capabilities through Time-of-Arrival (TOA) based ranging techniques. Over the past decade, chaotic signals have received significant attention due to a number of attractive features. Chaotic signals are aperiodic, deterministic, and random-like signals derived from nonlinear dynamical systems whose good autocorrelation, low cross-correlation and sensitivity to the initial conditions make them particularly suitable to ranging systems. In this thesis, two new multiuser TOA estimation algorithms are proposed with low complexity and robustness to MUI, the number of users supported by which is much larger than current multiuser TOA estimators. While, the use of classic spreading sequences and ranging pulse constrain the further improvement of ranging performance and system capacity. For breaking through the limit brought by the classic signals, the selected chaotic signals are employed as the spreading sequences or ranging pulse in our proposed algorithms. With the use of chaotic signals, our proposed algorithm not only obtains the additional improvement, but also with capability to support larger number of users comparing with its counterpart using classic signals

These structures are often used in aircraft, missiles, satellites, radomes, antennae reflector, high gain antennas and microwave ovens, for example. The use of these structures has as main objective filter frequency bands that can be broadcast or rejection, depending on the specificity of the required application. In turn, the modern communication systems such as GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and WiMAX, whose services are highly demanded by society, have required the development of antennas having, as its main features, and low cost profile, and reduced dimensions and weight. In this context, the microstrip antenna is presented as an excellent choice for communications systems today, because (in addition to meeting the requirements mentioned intrinsically) planar structures are easy to manufacture and integration with other components in microwave circuits. Consequently, the analysis and synthesis of these devices mainly, due to the high possibility of shapes, size and frequency of its elements has been carried out by full-wave models, such as the finite element method, the method of moments and finite difference time domain. However, these methods require an accurate despite great computational effort. In this context, computational intelligence (CI) has been used successfully in the design and optimization of microwave planar structures, as an auxiliary tool and very appropriate, given the complexity of the geometry of the antennas and the FSS considered. The computational intelligence is inspired by natural phenomena such as learning, perception and decision, using techniques such as artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic, fractal geometry and evolutionary computation. This work makes a study of application of computational intelligence using meta-heuristics such as genetic algorithms and swarm intelligence optimization of antennas and frequency selective surfaces. Genetic algorithms are computational search methods based on the theory of natural selection proposed by Darwin and genetics used to solve complex problems, eg, problems where the search space grows with the size of the problem. The particle swarm optimization characteristics including the use of intelligence collectively being applied to optimization problems in many areas of research. The main objective of this work is the use of computational intelligence, the analysis and synthesis of antennas and FSS. We considered the structures of a microstrip planar monopole, ring type, and a cross-dipole FSS. We developed algorithms and optimization results obtained for optimized geometries of antennas and FSS considered. To validate results were designed, constructed and measured several prototypes. The measured results showed excellent agreement with the simulated. Moreover, the results obtained in this study were compared to those simulated using a commercial software has been also observed an excellent agreement. Specifically, the efficiency of techniques used were CI evidenced by simulated and measured, aiming at optimizing the bandwidth of an antenna for wideband operation or UWB (Ultra Wideband), using a genetic algorithm and optimizing the bandwidth, by specifying the length of the air gap between two frequency selective surfaces, using an optimization algorithm particle swarm / As superf?cies seletivas de freq??ncia, ou FSS (Frequency Selective Surfaces), s?o estruturas constitu?das por arranjos peri?dicos de elementos condutores, denominados patches, geralmente muito finos e impressos sobre camadas diel?tricas, ou de aberturas, perfuradas em superf?cies met?licas muito finas, para aplica??es nas faixas de microondas e ondas milim?tricas.

Moorfeld, Rainer 09 July 2012 (has links)

Modelling and design of compact wideband and ultra-wideband antennas for wireless communications. Simulation and measurement of planer inverted F antennas (PIFAs) for contemporary mobile terminal applications, and investigations of frequency range and radiation performance of UWB antennas with design optimisation using parametric studies.

Hraga, Hmeda I. January 2013 (has links)
The rapidly growing demand for UWB as high data rates wireless communications technology, since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated the bandwidth of UWB from 3.1GHz to 10.6 GHz. Antenna also plays an essential role in UWB system. However, there are some difficulties in designing UWB antenna as compared to narrowband antenna. The primary requirement of UWB antennas is be able to operate over frequencies released by the FCC. Moreover, the satisfaction of radiation properties and good time domain performance over the entire frequency range are also necessary. In this thesis, designing and analysing printed crescent shape monopole antenna, Planar Inverted F-L Antenna (PIFLA) and Planar Inverted FF Antenna (PIFFA) are focused. A Planar Inverted FF Antenna (PIFFA) can be created to reduce the potential for interference between a UWB system and other communications protocols by using spiral slot. The antennas exhibits broadside directional pattern. The performances such as return loss, radiation pattern and current distribution of the UWB antennas are extensively investigated and carried out. All the results have been demonstrated using simulation and experimentally whereby all results satisfy the performance under - 10dB point in the bandwidth of UWB. In addition the miniaturization of MIMO/diversity Planar Inverted-F antenna (PIFA) which is suitable for pattern diversity in UWB applications is presented. This antenna assembly is formed by two identical PIFAs, a T-shaped decoupling structure which connects the two PIFAs and a finite ground plane with a total compact envelope dimension of 50 ¿ 90 ¿ 7.5mm3. The radiation performance of the proposed MIMO antenna was quite encouraging and provided an acceptable agreement between the computed and measured envelope correlation coefficient and channel capacity loss. / General Secretariat of Education and Scientific Research Libya

Design of a low-power 60 GHz transceiver front-end and behavioral modeling and implementation of its key building blocks in 65 nm CMOS

Kraemer, Michael 03 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Worldwide regulations for short range communication devices allow the unlicensed use of several Gigahertz of bandwidth in the frequency band around 60 GHz. This 60GHz band is ideally suited for applications like very high data rate, energy-autonomous wireless sensor networks or Gbit/s multimedia links with low power constraints. Not long ago, radio interfaces that operate in the millimeter-wave frequency range could only be realized using expensive compound semiconductor technologies. Today, the latest sub-micron CMOS technologies can be used to design 60GHz radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) at very low cost in mass production. This thesis is part of an effort to realize a low power System in Package (SiP) including both the radio interface (with baseband and RF circuitry) and an antenna array to directly transmit and receive a 60GHz signal. The first part of this thesis deals with the design of the low power RF transceiver front-end for the radio interface. The key building blocks of this RF front-end (amplifiers, mixers and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO)) are designed, realized and measured using the 65nm CMOS technology of ST Microelectronics. Full custom active and passive devices are developed and characterized for the use within these building blocks. An important step towards the full integration of the RF transceiver front-end is the assembly of these building blocks to form a basic receiver chip. Circuits with small chip size and low power consumption compared to the state of the art have been accomplished. The second part of this thesis concerns the development of behavioral models for the designed building blocks. These system level models are necessary to simulate the behavior of the entire SiP, which becomes too complex when using detailed circuit level models. In particular, a novel technique to model the transient, steady state and phase noise behavior of the VCO in the hardware description language VHDL-AMS is proposed and implemente d. The model uses a state space description to describe the dynamic behavior of the VCO. Its nonlinearity is approximated by artificial neural networks. A drastic reduction of simulation time with respect to the circuit level model has been achieved, while at the same time maintaining a very high level of accuracy.

Δέκτες/αποδιαμορφωτές βασικής ζώνης για ασύρματα συστήματα υπερ-ευρείας ζώνης (ultra wideband) / Baseband receivers/demodulators for ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless systems

Θώμος, Χρήστος 28 February 2013 (has links)
Τhe implementation of practical wireless data communications systems for the UWB technology is very challenging due to the use of low-power ns-duration pulses which have to be sent in a high-frequency in order to achieve the desirable data rates. The UWB channel is highly frequency selective and it is characterized by dense and rich multipath propagation and large multipath delay spreads in some cases. A RAKE receiver can be employed in order to exploit multipath diversity and effectively capture the desired signal energy which is dispersed over the various multipath components, helping to mitigate fading. However, the particular nature of UWB results in very low-energy paths which, in conjunction with high multipath diversity, leads to a RAKE receiver that must exploit a large number of MPCs in order to optimize the received SNR. Thus, for the implementation of a low-complexity system it is important to define a novel method for the selection and combining of MPCs and develop an algorithm that is able to utilize a minimum number of fingers in the RAKE structure. Our work was focused in the study of UWB technology, the investigation of the parameters of IR-UWB systems, the study and understanding of the channel models which is necessary for the design of practical and efficient DSP algorithms, the investigation of RAKE type receivers as well as other alternative structures, the system-level simulations of the IR-UWB transceiver with emphasis given to the algorithms for the RAKE demodulator and channel estimator, the investigation of the parameters and techniques for the implementation of the system in hardware and finally, the development, design, and implementation of a practical receiver structure that includes a RAKE demodulator and a channel estimator and combines low complexity and satisfactory performance. The ultimate goal of this work is the presentation and investigation of the proposed channel estimator and (MRC)-RAKE receiver architecture which is based on a proposed novel hybrid algorithm called HPS. Three different design approaches aiming to a practical system implementation in an FPGA are proposed and compared and system/algorithm performance, hardware utilization results are provided. The obtained results demonstrate the trade-off between energy capture, performance and receiver complexity. The effectiveness of the proposed architectures is verified on a special FPGA platform which was used for the implementation of the receiver structure.

Photonic Techniques for Next-Generation Integrated Optical Networks Based on Ultra-Wideband Radio / Técnicas Fotónicas para Redes Ópticas Integradas de Próxima Generación Basadas en Radio de Banda Ultra Ancha

Beltrán Ramírez, Marta 10 May 2012 (has links)
Beltrán Ramírez, M. Radio wave imaging using Ultra-Wide Band Spectrum Antennas for Near-Field Applications. Design, Development, and Measurements of Ultra-Wideband Antenna for Microwave Near-Field Imaging Applications by applying Optimisation Algorithms

Danjuma, Isah M. January 2020 (has links)
The emergence of Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology application has yielded tremendous and vital impacts in the field of microwave wireless communications. These applications include military radar imaging, security screening, and tumour detection, especially for early detection of breast cancer. These indicators have stimulated and inspired many researchers to make the best use of this promising technology. UWB technology challenges such as antenna design, the problem of imaging reconstruction techniques, challenges of severe signal attenuation and dispersion in high loss material. Others are lengthy computational time demand and large computer memory requirements are prevalent constraints that need to be tackled especially in a large scale and complex computational electromagnetic analysis. In this regard, it is necessary to find out recently developed optimisation techniques that can provide solutions to these problems. In this thesis, designing, optimisation, development, measurement, and analysis of UWB antennas for near-field microwave imaging applications are considered. This technology emulates the same concept of surface penetrating radar operating in various forms of the UWB spectrum. The initial design of UWB monopole antennas, including T-slots, rectangular slots, and hexagonal slots on a circular radiating patch, was explicitly implemented for medical imaging applications to cover the UWB frequency ranging from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz. Based on this concept, a new bow-tie and Vivaldi UWB antennas were designed for a through-the-wall imaging application. The new antennas were designed to cover a spectrum on a lower frequency ranging from 1 GHz - 4 GHz to ease the high wall losses that will be encountered when using a higher frequency range and to guarantee deeper penetration of the electromagnetic wave. Finally, both simulated and calculated results of the designed, optimised antennas indicate excellent agreement with improved performance in terms of return loss, gain, radiation pattern, and fidelity over the entire UWB frequency. These breakthroughs provided reduced computational time and computer memory requirement for useful, efficient, reliable, and compact sensors for imaging applications, including security and breast cancer detection, thereby saving more lives. / Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TET Fund) Supported by the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA)
